It had been a while since my last visit, and this time I decided to try their happy hour (2-5 pm, with the last food order at 4:30 pm, available only at the bar counter). There were several people seated at the bar and only one bartender working, but he was efficient and attentive. I ordered one of the well drinks, which I wasn't familiar with. The kind bartender explained that it's simply a basic liquor mixed with something like soda. I ended up having a vodka tonic, and it was nice and strong. For food, I tried the Baked Mussels (Lup cheong sausage and mayo-crusted green-lip mussels) and the Lilikoi Chicken Wings (passion fruit-glazed mid-joint wings with sesame seeds). The mussels were cooked perfectly. I didn't really notice the taste of the sausage, but that didn't bother me since I mainly wanted to enjoy the flavor of the mussels. The wings were good as well, though they were very sticky, so I wish they had provided wet napkins. Overall, I enjoyed both the drinks and the food. It's a nice, quick, and reasonably priced spot to grab a bite in the middle of the busy Waikiki area. read more

Happy hour is from 2-5pm daily and is only offered at the bar (bummer, because it looks like they have a nice outdoor area...) The prices on the HH drinks were good and I'm always glad when they have local beers on draft. However, I was pretty underwhelmed by the food. Garlic chicken sliders: Instead of having one piece of chicken, it was multiple small pieces of chicken, which means they kept falling out of the sandwich. They were also soft - and so was the mac salad on the sandwich, so there was no textural contrast. It probably would've been much better if the chicken was crispy. Garlic soy fries: Interesting shape! They were crispy on the outside but were sitting in the sauce, so they could get soggy if they sat too long. Overall it just felt like everything was a touch too sweet and needed a hit of acid or salt or something to punch it up. read more

Rodd helped me plan my mom's 60th birthday dinner here at Basalt and they exceeded in impressing all 14 people! They helped me curate a 3 course menu that fit perfectly with our group and the the pricing was more than fair for the amount and quality of the food we received. I have to give huge props to Rodd and his team, especially our waitress Bina, for such an outstanding job. We all enjoyed everything, from the salad starters down to our desserts, everything was perfect! Our meal started off with the house salad, perfectly dressed & great size for an app. Then our guests had 3 items to choose from: fish, chicken or gnocchi with sausage. I chose the fresh catch of the day which was marlin. It did not disappoint. Loooved the cook on it. It came with veggies and white rice and was perfectly portioned. I tasted the chicken and the gravy was amazing along with the mashed potatoes. Loved how lightly the skin was fried. Also tasted the gnocchi which was really flavorful as well. The third course was a dessert option of a mochi brownie or POG (Passfruit, Orange & Guava) mousse. Both options were great as it provided a chocolate and non-chocolate dessert. I liked the brownie the best! Everyone had nothing but great things to say about their meals. I definitely recommend Basalt for any occasion! Had a wonderful brunch at Basalt. I had a tasty skillet mixed with steak, French fries, and over easy eggs. My dish had alot of personality. During the last night of the conference, one of my friends got a group of us for dinner to try Basalt. She's a foodie so I knew I should be in for a good meal with good people. It felt a little weird for a cool spot to be tucked away in a mini food hall. Most of the places were closing up for the evening, Basalt stays open later than most. I wish I could remember our server's name because he was amazing- definitely kept in communication with the bartender to keep drinks a-flowing, recommended one of my best/fave meals for the trip and was very kind to have us be there past closing. As someone who has been in the industry, I know it can suck to be the closer and have one last table keeping you from closing up. I think we were there 30ish minutes after closing and I tried to apologize but he was very nice about it. There's not a lot to the menu which made picking dinner very difficult, however our server made 2 suggestions - fresh catch and the half-chicken. He told us they literally get fresh fish from a nearby harbor every day- which is what sold me... #EatSeafoodInHawaiiNoRegrets. They serve rice in shareable bowls for most of their meals- which was a nice add. I didn't get a drink but the menu had a nice mix of beer, wine and cocktails AND mocktails. read more

The loco moco portion here is a bit smaller compared to other restaurants (but sized right for a moderate appetite), but it was packed with more flavor, very delish. Nice service. Would return to try other items on the menu. If driving, you can park at the Hyatt Hotel 6th floor and Basalt can validate it for 3 hrs. We ended up shopping around the area a bit longer so we had to pay for an extra 1.5-2 hrs of parking, which ended up being like $12. read more

Basalt is an American-Asian fusion spot with a solid variety of offerings. The appetizers were all tasty, though a bit pricey for the portion sizes--$22 for four pieces of ribs, $24 for four pieces of salt and pepper shrimp, and $19 for three crab cakes. For entrées, I ordered the ribeye with mashed potatoes, which was cooked perfectly. The sauce had a nice balance of sweet and salty, almost like a Korean BBQ-style glaze, and paired really well with the mashed potatoes--different but delicious. My wife had the seafood curry, which reminded us of a laksa served with rice and was flavorful and comforting. We also enjoyed the Black Manhattan, which was well-balanced and not overly sweet. A little sad that they switched their menus and a chef change. My favorite item before was the wagyu loco moco, which they now swap out for a pork loco moco to be different. If comparing the wagyu loco moco to the pork, the wagyu was far superior. But if comparing a pork loco moco, which is different from the rest of the strip, it's good. Cooked perfectly. They still had similar items, like the charcoal pancakes, and a few other items. The menu is still affordable for most items. We've had a wonderful experience every time we've come to Basalt! The food is consistently amazing my personal favorite is the charcoal pork buns but honestly, everything we tried was delicious. Don't skip the complimentary bread and butter they serve before the meal so good we had to ask for more! Our first visit we sat indoors and the second time we chose to sit outside. Both were nice, but I personally preferred the indoor seating it's quieter and free from the traffic noise and little bugs. The staff was so warm and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Service was excellent both times. I already can't wait to come back and try their famous charcoal pancakes next time! We parked at the International Market Place if you're unsure where to park, I recommend calling ahead for guidance. The five of us went for dinner and shared everything family-style. As you walk in, there's a good-sized bar with big-screen TVs up front, while the open kitchen and main dining area sit tucked toward the back. The space has a modern industrial look with high ceilings and a comfortable elegant vibe. It's Waikīkī, so the dress code is super casual. The menu? Comfort classics with an elevated twist -- Hawai'i Regional Cuisine infused with Pacific Rim and an Italian influence. Executive Chef Lance Kosaka, a Honolulu native and Kapiʻolani Community College alum, cut his teeth with the legendary Alan Wong. Favorites of the night: * Pan-Roasted Half Chicken -- Incredibly tender, with a velvety chicken jus that had rich, layered depth. Classic, comforting, and beautifully executed. * Vietnamese Bruschetta -- Very unique. A long slice of focaccia topped with chicken liver pâté, grilled lemongrass pork, jalapeño, pickled carrot and daikon, and cilantro. Think Banh Mi meets bruschetta. The pâté was smooth and slightly rich with none of that metallic aftertaste -- and the pickled veggies cut through the richness perfectly. The Seared Ahi came out perfectly medium rare, tender and fresh. I wasn't a fan of the kai choy purée -- its sharp, peppery flavor needed a little fat to soften the edge. But the brunoise of shiitake, eryngii, bok choy, and onion was pan-seared to a wonderful golden brown and added an amazing layer of umami on top of the fish. Prime Rib was the only letdown -- a bit dry, over-salted, and not as tender as you'd hope for in a prime rib cut. Also the temperature could've been a bit warmer. The new menu at Basalt is a little smaller, but so delicious! We got the Prime Rib Sandwich and Beef Stew Shakshuka. The sandwich meat and bread were so soft and delicious. The beef stew was very rich and flavorful, going perfectly with the sourdough bread provided on the side. Service: One thing I didn't care for was that we had a change of waitresses and the first older blonde woman waitress cut us off mid sentence to start talking to her coworker while making hand gestures and ignoring us, then, without saying anything, she left. Although I LOVE the waitress who helped us in her place whose name was Candace -- she was very attentive, quick, and friendly. Vibe: They have indoor and outdoor seating. I was on a mission, needed a small kine pupu to get me by on errand running and more importantly needed a restroom for emergency situation. I had already been rudely treated by a few other places and was at a point where I could not venture any further without creating a disaster. I went up to the hostess area - and politely explained my circumstances. I did NOT catch her name, but she was already giving me an attitude that I was just trying to take advantage of their restroom only and proceeded to rudely tell me that they had no public restrooms and I needed to go elsewhere. I again explained with urgency this was emergency status and did not have ability to venture elsewhere. She became immediately hostile towards me. I blurted out I was planning to sit down anyways! She gave me the code, said thank you, immediately rushed to take care of business. Rushing towards the restrooms I glanced toward bar to determine where I would park myself afterwards, and scope out the menu. I return to the dining area, and upon seeing me enter this same hostess immediately yells loud enough in a hostile manner for the entire restaurant both indoors and outside "Are you going to be dining here then or not!?!?" I was NOT expecting to be put on the spot like this and did not appreciate the condescending tone and attitude directed at me. I immediately replied her aggressive tone and attitude were completely out of line and this was extremely unprofessional on her part. Then out of the blue this female bar tender comes out of the bar area and repeats the same question same attitude and hostility at me. I had had ZERO interaction with the bar tender and this was completely OUT OF LINE UNPROVOKED AND UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR! I asked the bar tender why she needed to know. She started to berate me in the restaurant, I cut her off and said in a cold tone "MANAGER, NOW!" Bartender only pointed her finger and said over there. I walked over to where 2 individuals were talking, and asked to speak to the manager. Yes I was livid at this point. The lady standing turns out was the manager and we walked to a discreet area in restaurant and I explained all that had transpired. I explained I understood what their policy was regarding public restroom, and also had stated I was planning to sit down after using the restroom, and I was approached in a most unprofessional behavior. I have dined at this location several times before being a local and have never been treated in this manner. I stated being treated in the manner I was did NOT make me feel welcomed or safe as a guest. Being spoken down to and humiliating me in a way that guests both inside and outdoors could hear the drama also very provoking and again extremely unprofessional. For an employee who had no part in the conversation with the hostess and I, to jump to drastic conclusions and further attack me in a hostile manner aggravated my anxiety, and was triggering PTSD symptoms. The Manager, Lehua, understood my point of view and agreed this was out of line and stated I was correct that the employees should have done a better job of reading the situational awareness and been more professional in their demeanor towards me. Further agreed the bar tender had zero place involving herself in this scenario to begin with. When I was hoping to just get a small bit to eat now made me question if I would be treated fairly as a customer with this hostility shown towards me, and in future visits if I would be treated fairly if these same individuals were to be working. I've seen and heard from industry workers what employees do when they take a severe dislike to a customer. And it put doubt if I would be given the same treatment. Lehua saw me shaking, and could see how I was affected. She did a great job helping me to calm down. I also acknowledge that yes I understand they have a policy for a reason and I wasn't contesting the policy, and sometimes just sometimes compassion and human dignity take precedence over policy to which we both laughed and agreed upon. My utmost kudos to Lehua for addressing my concerns. She mentioned she would speak with both the hostess AND bartender addressing the situation. I made the difficult choice to not eat there despite liking their food in general only due to the fact I knew I would not be receiving the best customer service due to this situation. We had to go back to the mainland for an emergency so our last day at home was on Christmas Day. We walked down to Waikiki Beach for a gorgeous sunset with lots of happy tourists! Then, we walked back to Basalt for the special Christmas menu that was a Prix Fixe dinner for $80/pp excluding beverages, tax, and tip. What a screamin', mo-fo deal!!!! My husband of many, many, many years and I split almost everything! We were gobsmacked at the sheer inventiveness of the chef, and as always, pleased and amazed at the quality of the food. If you're a foodie, you will not be disappointed, and if you're not, you won't be mad at architecturally interesting plates! This is just great food, presented with imagination, but with a comfort rather than artsy-fartsy perspective. The seafood chowder was so complex, savory, and delicious that we were disappointed when it was gone. We live part-time in the Salinas Valley where ALL of the bagged lettuce and salad is grown and packed (except in winter when production moves to Yuma AZ). I NEVER order salad in restaurants! Yet, this poached pear salad was carefully picked and presented with candied macadamia nuts and a dang egg roll filled with triple cream blue cheese. OMG!!!! My husband was a touch on the grumpy side as neither of us wanted to be going back to the mainland. He proceeded to literally grill our fabulous server, Gail, about entrees that wouldn't be sweet. Talk about a consummate professional! She was sensational at talking to the bear, and recommending the swordfish, as well as making an inspired wine choice! I can't speak about her highly enough! He had the swordfish over a Thai curry sauce. I had the duck breast with the cherry sauce. The swordfish was the best we had ever eaten. It was juicy and tender rather than the typical offering which is dryer than dust and harder than a rock. The curry was spicy hot but not weirdly sweet or sour. It was so we'll balanced as well as beautifully colorful and presented. My duck breast was insane! It was perfectly cooked medium rare with a crispy skin in a sour cherry sauce. Again, it was so balanced in flavors! The plate also had perfectly roasted veg that wasn't too cooked and retained all of its veg flavor. The portions were perfect; enough to make you feel good but wanting a lot more! I told Gail that I was diabetic and so didn't want dessert. Wisely, she said dessert came with the menu so she'd being one of each: the chocolate tart and the lemon cheesecake. OMG again! The tart was fantastic but the cheesecake kicked butt! The cheesecake was so light and creamy, not too tart and sour. It was on a cornmeal crust that was the perfect salty and crunchy to the sweet and creamy of the cheesecake. We ate it all and were deliriously happy. This was a superlative meal. It was the best restaurant meal we had had in years! Basalt is a hidden gem in Waikiki. I was supposed to meet some out of town friends for dinner but thing came up that they couldn't make it. Well, since I made the reservation and drove through the crazy traffic to Waikiki, I decided to eat here anyway. I started with a refreshing mocktail. The restaurant complimented the yuzu crab cake. It was a nice surprise and delicious. I don't turn down good food . I ordered the steamed clams with Chinese sausage. The toast was perfectly crispy to soak up the sauce after. I had the seared Ahi and rice for the main dish. The seared ahi was perfectly cooked and still rare in the middle. Personally I would like it charred a little more outside but still rare inside. For dessert, I had the calamansi tart. It was the tangy deliciousness. The tart shell could be more crispier and it would have been perfect. The service was great. The wait staff was very attentive. Since my last visit, Basalt has hired a new head chef. They have both changed the menu offerings, and streamlined the menus. Some signature items remain. For brunch, I tried the beef shakshuka ($24.00). Separately, I ordered a side of steamed white rice ($4.00), and a Coors draft ($5.00). With tax ($1.55), my ticket was $34.55 before gratuity. (Per the photo) the beef stew is served in a mini cast iron skillet and is topped with two eggs. It also comes with slices of sourdough toast. The presentation was nice; the texture was good; but I am glad that I ordered the steamed rice. The shakshuka was too salty, and the white rice toned down the saltiness to an acceptable level. Update 6/24/25 We had breakfast at Basalt again. The service provided by Jon was excellent. Jon was friendly, helpful and very entertaining. The food at Basalt is prepared very well and the presentation is thumbs up! The pork hash loco moco is unique. The gravy is different from the dark brown beefy gravy served elsewhere, it is lighter brown, more of a turkey gravy color. That being said, the gravy was still tasty, and combined well to the pork patty. The pork patty was seasoned perfectly, and was very tender. Everything went well together. I would order this selection again. The strawberry charcoal pancakes were soft and fluffy, not dense. The strawberries went well with the charcoal pancakes. With maple syrup drizzled throughout, the charcoal pancake was deliciously satisfying. Overall, we have always enjoyed our visits here at Basalt have always been enjoyable. We ordered the charcoal pancakes and eggs Benedict and both were pretty good! I came here twice during their Spam Jam Celebration a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to try their Breakfast Specials. I ordered the Loco Moco SPAM Style and the SPAM Eggs Benedict. The Loco Moco was sooo good! The SPAM was cooked well; the mushroom gravy was so yummy, and I could definitely see and taste the bacon in the fried rice. The SPAM Eggs Benedict was so good as well! I always liked dining at Basalt. It's located in Waikiki but so glad they offer 4 hours parking validation at Hyatt Centric! Hyatt Centric used to be the old Waikiki Trade Center. Entrance to the parking is on Seaside Avenue right after the Ross Store! Parking elevators come down right next to Duke Lane Market & Eatery on Kūhiō Avenue. Basalt is located inside. It makes a difference when deciding on a place to go with friends. Location, food, cost, and parking are their immediate concerns. I like that they are opened for brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner. I liked that they offer breakfast items with charcoal pancakes. At Halloween they have their special Halloween theme decorated charcoal pancakes. I tried a few happy hour items and dinner pre-fix on a special holiday. I was more impressed by the Thanksgiving meals package ready to re-heat. Maybe it was 2023' when we bought our Thanksgiving take meal for four and the boneless turkey was so flavorful with the herbs and so moist and not dry. The sides were all great and even the pumpkin cheesecake the meal came with. Picked up was a day before Thanksgiving for us and you would drive and park on Duke's Lane as they load your car. I mentioned to Daniel C that our family enjoyed it and he ordered it the following year for a gathering. He seemed to have liked it as well. Recently came for dinner in a large group and I was amazed how the Pan Roasted half chicken several of us had was so tender and the chicken jus made it so delicious. I overlooked the chicken at first , but Iris T. mentioned Toan D. had mentioned in his review that it was really good. A bunch of us ordered it. It was pan fried and nicely butterflied open! This one at-least came with starch and vegetables. Mashed potatoes and broccolini. it was filling and even shared my left over with mom. So tender as I used the kitchen shear to cut the chicken for mom. I would order that again! I even ordered the Vietnamese Bruschetta and that was amazingly refreshing and unique! I love banh mi and bruschetta. Chicken liver pate spread on a large focaccia bread with tasty grilled lemongrass pork with jalapeño, pickled carrots, daikon and topped with cilantro. The dressing on it made the dish. I could eat it as my meal like Jackie K. also said. I was surprise to see a warabi salad on the menu but didn't order that but got to taste a little. I've been waiting to try this place for a long time and it did not disappoint. The fried rice loco moco was heaven and one order of the pancakes was good to share for the table (just wished there was more of that strawberry syrup). It's in a nice part of Waikiki within a little market area. Great spot for some elevated local food. read more

Great spot located inside a food hall. Came here for dinner around 5:30 and was sat immediately. Service is amazing they really take care of you and are knowledgeable about the menu and can answer any questions you have. Started with 2 drinks, totally forgot the name of them, but one was a spicy margarita and the other a local rum drink. They were so refreshing and delicious. We had the fix menu with prime rib and the macadamia nut crusted and fish and both were fantastic. Meat was cooked to perfection and both dishes were full of flavor. We ended the dinner with a delicious chocolate cake with raspberry sauce and WOW I could eat 3 of those. So light and yummy. Highly recommend! read more

We have been to Basalt for breakfast many times. The food and service were always spot on. On our recent visit, this was not the case. I ordered over easy eggs but I received sunny side up with uncooked egg whites. Our server sent my plate back to the kitchen only to serve me very hard cooked eggs. All the while, my husband was eating his breakfast while I was waiting. They used to serve really good breakfast potatoes but they have been replaced with thick frozen fries which is a downgrade. We're bummed that the kitchen and food are not what they once were. We won't be back. read more

Spontaneous dinner date with a friend and never expected the food to be so good! We were walking around Waikiki and stumbled into what looked like an abc store market franchise. But towards the back we saw a restaurant tucked away in the corner with patio seating and a big bar. We dressed more casual but it seems like a more up scale casual restaurant. We have heard about basalt before and saw prime rib on the menu so we had to give it a try. We were there around 6 on a week night and it was moderately slow. We started with the beef carpaccio which was absolutely amazing. It was refreshing and bright and reminded of us of eating pho with all the different flavors! And of course the prime rib was a hit and a very large portion. Definitely would come back to try more things on the menu that looked appetizing! Fantastic food and service. I got the veggie breakfast with no egg and a spa day drink, my husband got the breakfast biscuit sandwich. Very filling and refreshing! The veggie breakfast had so much flavor, the pepper sauce being a highlight. The breakfast biscuit was so warm and buttery a great flaky biscuit! Would absolutely recommend for brunch! read more

When I stayed in Hawaii for four days a few months ago, we tried a few different brunch restaurants every morning, including this one. Among all the similar brunch restaurants, the picture of black charcoal bread on Yelp looked pretty interesting. When I asked about the charcoal bread, the server gave four pieces as a complementary appetizer, saying they were not usually served at brunch. The bread wasn't particularly special or overwhelming, but I really appreciated the server's kind and attentive service. I had a vegetable omelet and avocado garden toast with a side of smoked salmon. Everything was good, but the avocados weren't as fresh as those in California. Unfortunately, most avocados in Hawaii, even those from the markets, are not very fresh. Overall, though, the dishes were great enough to enjoy the Hawaiian morning vibe. read more

Came here on a weekday evening for dinner and we were able to get seated quickly. We must have came right before dinner because the place was mostly empty when we arrived and started to fill up when we were leaving. My husband and I both got the ribeye special. It was $39 for a 12oz ribeye. It's a good deal. Our server was great - very friendly and cheerful. I did not care for the charcoal dinner rolls. They seemed stale and they cold. You can also feel the graininess of the charcoal. read more

Happy hour at the bar we had a couple beers, poke and some wings. Service was friendly and welcoming and the game was on the tv. Dry rubbed wings were good but the sauce was delicious. The poke was equally as delicious we could have eaten two more bowls. read more
