We came to Basalt tonight to celebrate my birthday. It was my first time here and after tonight's meal.....I want to come here again. First things first, park at the Hyatt Centric parking lot. Dining at Basalt gets you three hours of FREE parking. Cautionary statement: Watch the corners as you enter and exit. The lanes are skinny and you have to pay attention. Ok, onto the dinner. We skipped appetizers and went straight for dinner. Prime Rib for me, pasta with shrimp for the gf. Both were on point. The prime rib was seasoned perfectly and the pasta had choke shrimp (see pic) and garlic. To top it off, I got a free slice of chocolate mousse cake with fresh berries. I got a coconut sorbet on the side and the kitchen staff threw in free arare cookies. Which leads me into the most important point I want to make here. The service was awesome. Everyone from the hostess who seated us, to our server Candace, and the two women that served us....all gave great service. They were very nice and treated us great. We arrived around 9:40 a.m. on a Tuesday during the summer and were seated right away with no wait. The host and waitstaff were very attentive and welcoming throughout our visit. Our waitress, Brina, was especially kind and helpful. She recommended ordering the short stack instead of a side of pancakes, and it turned out to be the perfect amount for everyone at our table to share. The steak fries were absolutely delicious, and every dish we ordered was excellent. The bathrooms were clean, and the outdoor dining area was beautiful and well maintained. It's breakfast / brunch -- we as a large group of nine were hungry and also didn't want to wait an hour. We came across Basalt, asked the server about the wait time. Within a few minutes, our table was ready. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Due to the sunny weather and humidity, we choose outdoor seating. It was very humid but there was a slight breeze here and there. It was a bit loud due to the cars passing by / close to the garage entrance and other people walking by. But overall, the ambiance is simple and expected for outdoor seating. We had ordered several entrees and we shared so it was a nice mixed of food. We had three of the sandwiches, pancakes, ribs, salad and pasta. The food was delicious but my favorite would be the garlic chicken sandwich and charcoal buttermilk pancakes. Last night was my last night in Waikiki and I wanted to treat myself to a nice dinner. I had been a few years back for breakfast and remembered the food being delicious. I sat at the bar and was promptly greeted by the bartender. He was friendly and served me a water while I looked at the drink menu. I ended up getting the Maui Brewing Company Pineapple Hana. It is one of my favorites. I then showed my allergy card and asked if the bartender can show this to the chef and see if there was anything I could eat. If not I would have a couple of drinks. I was excited that he came back with a couple options. I decided on the gnocchi with spinach, tomato sauce, and sausage. It usually comes with eggplant, but I was unable eat it. It had been a while since my last visit, and this time I decided to try their happy hour (2-5 pm, with the last food order at 4:30 pm, available only at the bar counter). There were several people seated at the bar and only one bartender working, but he was efficient and attentive. I ordered one of the well drinks, which I wasn't familiar with. The kind bartender explained that it's simply a basic liquor mixed with something like soda. I ended up having a vodka tonic, and it was nice and strong. For food, I tried the Baked Mussels (Lup cheong sausage and mayo-crusted green-lip mussels) and the Lilikoi Chicken Wings (passion fruit-glazed mid-joint wings with sesame seeds). The mussels were cooked perfectly. I didn't really notice the taste of the sausage, but that didn't bother me since I mainly wanted to enjoy the flavor of the mussels. The prices on the HH drinks were good and I'm always glad when they have local beers on draft. However, I was pretty underwhelmed by the food. Garlic chicken sliders: Instead of having one piece of chicken, it was multiple small pieces of chicken, which means they kept falling out of the sandwich. They were also soft - and so was the mac salad on the sandwich, so there was no textural contrast. It probably would've been much better if the chicken was crispy. Garlic soy fries: Interesting shape! They were crispy on the outside but were sitting in the sauce, so they could get soggy if they sat too long. Spending the weekend in Waikiki. Walked around and decided to stop in to Basalt for dinner. Went there for breakfast a while ago and had a great time with my cousins. This time I was with my husband for our anniversary. We were seated inside and got our drinks and decided on dinner. We decided to share a prime rib (we weren't hungry enough to eat a full meal). Gosh it was perfectly cooked and it was delicious. We decided to order dessert. I got a POG mousse cake and my husband got a mochi brownie. Really super yummy. Service was excellent. Rodd helped me plan my mom's 60th birthday dinner here at Basalt and they exceeded in impressing all 14 people! They helped me curate a 3 course menu that fit perfectly with our group and the the pricing was more than fair for the amount and quality of the food we received. I have to give huge props to Rodd and his team, especially our waitress Bina, for such an outstanding job. We all enjoyed everything, from the salad starters down to our desserts, everything was perfect! Our meal started off with the house salad, perfectly dressed & great size for an app. Then our guests had 3 items to choose from: fish, chicken or gnocchi with sausage. I chose the fresh catch of the day which was marlin. It did not disappoint. Loooved the cook on it. It came with veggies and white rice and was perfectly portioned. I tasted the chicken and the gravy was amazing along with the mashed potatoes. Loved how lightly the skin was fried. Also tasted the gnocchi which was really flavorful as well. The third course was a dessert option of a mochi brownie or POG (Passfruit, Orange & Guava) mousse. Both options were great as it provided a chocolate and non-chocolate dessert. During the last night of the conference, one of my friends got a group of us for dinner to try Basalt. She's a foodie so I knew I should be in for a good meal with good people. It felt a little weird for a cool spot to be tucked away in a mini food hall. Most of the places were closing up for the evening, Basalt stays open later than most. I wish I could remember our server's name because he was amazing- definitely kept in communication with the bartender to keep drinks a-flowing, recommended one of my best/fave meals for the trip and was very kind to have us be there past closing. As someone who has been in the industry, I know it can suck to be the closer and have one last table keeping you from closing up. I think we were there 30ish minutes after closing and I tried to apologize but he was very nice about it. There's not a lot to the menu which made picking dinner very difficult, however our server made 2 suggestions - fresh catch and the half-chicken. He told us they literally get fresh fish from a nearby harbor every day- which is what sold me... #EatSeafoodInHawaiiNoRegrets. The loco moco portion here is a bit smaller compared to other restaurants (but sized right for a moderate appetite), but it was packed with more flavor, very delish. Nice service. Would return to try other items on the menu. If driving, you can park at the Hyatt Hotel 6th floor and Basalt can validate it for 3 hrs. I brought awareness to the waiter and they told me they were going to bring me a side, then the manager came over and said it was 4oz of meat and he was sorry I felt that way, since I said "it is very little meat". They didn't bring me the meat either. I suggested they add the weight to the menu he said he wasn't going to do that but rather instruct the waiters to educate customers when they choose it's the taste was very good though. We also had the Veggie Breakfast, Salmon Ochazuke, and Ahi Salad. We topped everything with POG Mousse Pie and a cheesecake on the house with a candle for the birthday girl! Service was unpretentious, and we even got a visit from Chef Lance Kosaka! We left happy and contented :) Parking is in Hyatt Centric, but I didn't mind parking at International Market Place (entered from Kuhio) and buying $25 worth of stuff from Target to get cheaper parking rate. If comparing the wagyu loco moco to the pork, the wagyu was far superior. But if comparing a pork loco moco, which is different from the rest of the strip, it's good. Cooked perfectly. The appetizers were all tasty, though a bit pricey for the portion sizes--$22 for four pieces of ribs, $24 for four pieces of salt and pepper shrimp, and $19 for three crab cakes. We've had a wonderful experience every time we've come to Basalt! The food is consistently amazing my personal favorite is the charcoal pork buns but honestly, everything we tried was delicious. Don't skip the complimentary bread and butter they serve before the meal so good we had to ask for more! Our first visit we sat indoors and the second time we chose to sit outside. Both were nice, but I personally preferred the indoor seating it's quieter and free from the traffic noise and little bugs. The staff was so warm and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Service was excellent both times. I already can't wait to come back and try their famous charcoal pancakes next time! As you walk in, there's a good-sized bar with big-screen TVs up front, while the open kitchen and main dining area sit tucked toward the back. The space has a modern industrial look with high ceilings and a comfortable elegant vibe. It's Waikīkī, so the dress code is super casual. The menu? Comfort classics with an elevated twist -- Hawai'i Regional Cuisine infused with Pacific Rim and an Italian influence. Executive Chef Lance Kosaka, a Honolulu native and Kapiʻolani Community College alum, cut his teeth with the legendary Alan Wong. Favorites of the night: * Pan-Roasted Half Chicken -- Incredibly tender, with a velvety chicken jus that had rich, layered depth. Classic, comforting, and beautifully executed. * Vietnamese Bruschetta -- Very unique. A long slice of focaccia topped with chicken liver pâté, grilled lemongrass pork, jalapeño, pickled carrot and daikon, and cilantro. Think Banh Mi meets bruschetta. The pâté was smooth and slightly rich with none of that metallic aftertaste -- and the pickled veggies cut through the richness perfectly. The Seared Ahi came out perfectly medium rare, tender and fresh. I wasn't a fan of the kai choy purée -- its sharp, peppery flavor needed a little fat to soften the edge. But the brunoise of shiitake, eryngii, bok choy, and onion was pan-seared to a wonderful golden brown and added an amazing layer of umami on top of the fish. Prime Rib was the only letdown -- a bit dry, over-salted, and not as tender as you'd hope for in a prime rib cut. Also the temperature could've been a bit warmer. The beef stew was very rich and flavorful, going perfectly with the sourdough bread provided on the side. Service: One thing I didn't care for was that we had a change of waitresses and the first older blonde woman waitress cut us off mid sentence to start talking to her coworker while making hand gestures and ignoring us, then, without saying anything, she left. Basalt is a hidden gem in Waikiki. I was supposed to meet some out of town friends for dinner but thing came up that they couldn't make it. Well, since I made the reservation and drove through the crazy traffic to Waikiki, I decided to eat here anyway. I started with a refreshing mocktail. The restaurant complimented the yuzu crab cake. It was a nice surprise and delicious. I don't turn down good food . I ordered the steamed clams with Chinese sausage. The toast was perfectly crispy to soak up the sauce after. I had the seared Ahi and rice for the main dish. The seared ahi was perfectly cooked and still rare in the middle. Personally I would like it charred a little more outside but still rare inside. For dessert, I had the calamansi tart. It was the tangy deliciousness. The tart shell could be more crispier and it would have been perfect. The service was great. The wait staff was very attentive. The nice thing is that they validate the parking for 3 hours. So I still had time to stroll around Waikiki if I wanted to. read more

Since my last visit, Basalt has hired a new head chef. They have both changed the menu offerings, and streamlined the menus. Some signature items remain. For brunch, I tried the beef shakshuka ($24.00). Separately, I ordered a side of steamed white rice ($4.00), and a Coors draft ($5.00). With tax ($1.55), my ticket was $34.55 before gratuity. (Per the photo) the beef stew is served in a mini cast iron skillet and is topped with two eggs. It also comes with slices of sourdough toast. The presentation was nice; the texture was good; but I am glad that I ordered the steamed rice. The shakshuka was too salty, and the white rice toned down the saltiness to an acceptable level. Update 6/24/25 We had breakfast at Basalt again. The service provided by Jon was excellent. Jon was friendly, helpful and very entertaining. The food at Basalt is prepared very well and the presentation is thumbs up! The pork hash loco moco is unique. The gravy is different from the dark brown beefy gravy served elsewhere, it is lighter brown, more of a turkey gravy color. That being said, the gravy was still tasty, and combined well to the pork patty. The pork patty was seasoned perfectly, and was very tender. Everything went well together. I would order this selection again. The strawberry charcoal pancakes were soft and fluffy, not dense. The strawberries went well with the charcoal pancakes. With maple syrup drizzled throughout, the charcoal pancake was deliciously satisfying. Overall, we have always enjoyed our visits here at Basalt have always been enjoyable.
