We ordered the charcoal pancakes and eggs Benedict and both were pretty good! The charcoal pancakes almost tasted like regular pancakes but the whipped cream and guava-strawberry sauce is what made it extra yummy! The eggs Benedict was tasty but nothing special. Please consider Basalt for your special holiday dinner! It will be memorable in the best way; food that is a taste sensation, and stupendeous service! We had to go back to the mainland for an emergency so our last day at home was on Christmas Day. We walked down to Waikiki Beach for a gorgeous sunset with lots of happy tourists! Then, we walked back to Basalt for the special Christmas menu that was a Prix Fixe dinner for $80/pp excluding beverages, tax, and tip. What a screamin', mo-fo deal!!!! My husband of many, many, many years and I split almost everything! We were gobsmacked at the sheer inventiveness of the chef, and as always, pleased and amazed at the quality of the food. If you're a foodie, you will not be disappointed, and if you're not, you won't be mad at architecturally interesting plates! This is just great food, presented with imagination, but with a comfort rather than artsy-fartsy perspective. The seafood chowder was so complex, savory, and delicious that we were disappointed when it was gone. We live part-time in the Salinas Valley where ALL of the bagged lettuce and salad is grown and packed (except in winter when production moves to Yuma AZ). I NEVER order salad in restaurants! Yet, this poached pear salad was carefully picked and presented with candied macadamia nuts and a dang egg roll filled with triple cream blue cheese. OMG!!!! My husband was a touch on the grumpy side as neither of us wanted to be going back to the mainland. He proceeded to literally grill our fabulous server, Gail, about entrees that wouldn't be sweet. Talk about a consummate professional! She was sensational at talking to the bear, and recommending the swordfish, as well as making an inspired wine choice! I can't speak about her highly enough! He had the swordfish over a Thai curry sauce. I had the duck breast with the cherry sauce. The swordfish was the best we had ever eaten. It was juicy and tender rather than the typical offering which is dryer than dust and harder than a rock. The curry was spicy hot but not weirdly sweet or sour. It was so we'll balanced as well as beautifully colorful and presented. My duck breast was insane! It was perfectly cooked medium rare with a crispy skin in a sour cherry sauce. Again, it was so balanced in flavors! The plate also had perfectly roasted veg that wasn't too cooked and retained all of its veg flavor. The portions were perfect; enough to make you feel good but wanting a lot more! I told Gail that I was diabetic and so didn't want dessert. Wisely, she said dessert came with the menu so she'd being one of each: the chocolate tart and the lemon cheesecake. OMG again! The tart was fantastic but the cheesecake kicked butt! The cheesecake was so light and creamy, not too tart and sour. It was on a cornmeal crust that was the perfect salty and crunchy to the sweet and creamy of the cheesecake. We ate it all and were deliriously happy. This was a superlative meal. It was the best restaurant meal we had had in years! I was on a mission, needed a small kine pupu to get me by on errand running and more importantly needed a restroom for emergency situation. I had already been rudely treated by a few other places and was at a point where I could not venture any further without creating a disaster. I went up to the hostess area - and politely explained my circumstances. I did NOT catch her name, but she was already giving me an attitude that I was just trying to take advantage of their restroom only and proceeded to rudely tell me that they had no public restrooms and I needed to go elsewhere. I again explained with urgency this was emergency status and did not have ability to venture elsewhere. She became immediately hostile towards me. I blurted out I was planning to sit down anyways! She gave me the code, said thank you, immediately rushed to take care of business. Rushing towards the restrooms I glanced toward bar to determine where I would park myself afterwards, and scope out the menu. I return to the dining area, and upon seeing me enter this same hostess immediately yells loud enough in a hostile manner for the entire restaurant both indoors and outside "Are you going to be dining here then or not!?!?" I was NOT expecting to be put on the spot like this and did not appreciate the condescending tone and attitude directed at me. I immediately replied her aggressive tone and attitude were completely out of line and this was extremely unprofessional on her part. Then out of the blue this female bar tender comes out of the bar area and repeats the same question same attitude and hostility at me. I had had ZERO interaction with the bar tender and this was completely OUT OF LINE UNPROVOKED AND UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR! I asked the bar tender why she needed to know. She started to berate me in the restaurant, I cut her off and said in a cold tone "MANAGER, NOW!" Bartender only pointed her finger and said over there. I walked over to where 2 individuals were talking, and asked to speak to the manager. Yes I was livid at this point. The lady standing turns out was the manager and we walked to a discreet area in restaurant and I explained all that had transpired. I explained I understood what their policy was regarding public restroom, and also had stated I was planning to sit down after using the restroom, and I was approached in a most unprofessional behavior. I have dined at this location several times before being a local and have never been treated in this manner. I stated being treated in the manner I was did NOT make me feel welcomed or safe as a guest. Being spoken down to and humiliating me in a way that guests both inside and outdoors could hear the drama also very provoking and again extremely unprofessional. For an employee who had no part in the conversation with the hostess and I, to jump to drastic conclusions and further attack me in a hostile manner aggravated my anxiety, and was triggering PTSD symptoms. The Manager, Lehua, understood my point of view and agreed this was out of line and stated I was correct that the employees should have done a better job of reading the situational awareness and been more professional in their demeanor towards me. Further agreed the bar tender had zero place involving herself in this scenario to begin with. When I was hoping to just get a small bit to eat now made me question if I would be treated fairly as a customer with this hostility shown towards me, and in future visits if I would be treated fairly if these same individuals were to be working. I've seen and heard from industry workers what employees do when they take a severe dislike to a customer. And it put doubt if I would be given the same treatment. Lehua saw me shaking, and could see how I was affected. She did a great job helping me to calm down. I also acknowledge that yes I understand they have a policy for a reason and I wasn't contesting the policy, and sometimes just sometimes compassion and human dignity take precedence over policy to which we both laughed and agreed upon. My utmost kudos to Lehua for addressing my concerns. She mentioned she would speak with both the hostess AND bartender addressing the situation. I made the difficult choice to not eat there despite liking their food in general only due to the fact I knew I would not be receiving the best customer service due to this situation. I came here twice during their Spam Jam Celebration a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to try their Breakfast Specials. I ordered the Loco Moco SPAM Style and the SPAM Eggs Benedict. The Loco Moco was sooo good! The SPAM was cooked well; the mushroom gravy was so yummy, and I could definitely see and taste the bacon in the fried rice. The SPAM Eggs Benedict was so good as well! I always liked dining at Basalt. It's located in Waikiki but so glad they offer 4 hours parking validation at Hyatt Centric! Hyatt Centric used to be the old Waikiki Trade Center. Entrance to the parking is on Seaside Avenue right after the Ross Store! Parking elevators come down right next to Duke Lane Market & Eatery on Kūhiō Avenue. Basalt is located inside. It makes a difference when deciding on a place to go with friends. Location, food, cost, and parking are their immediate concerns. I like that they are opened for brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner. I liked that they offer breakfast items with charcoal pancakes. At Halloween they have their special Halloween theme decorated charcoal pancakes. I tried a few happy hour items and dinner pre-fix on a special holiday. I was more impressed by the Thanksgiving meals package ready to re-heat. Maybe it was 2023' when we bought our Thanksgiving take meal for four and the boneless turkey was so flavorful with the herbs and so moist and not dry. The sides were all great and even the pumpkin cheesecake the meal came with. Picked up was a day before Thanksgiving for us and you would drive and park on Duke's Lane as they load your car. I mentioned to Daniel C that our family enjoyed it and he ordered it the following year for a gathering. He seemed to have liked it as well. Recently came for dinner in a large group and I was amazed how the Pan Roasted half chicken several of us had was so tender and the chicken jus made it so delicious. I overlooked the chicken at first , but Iris T. mentioned Toan D. had mentioned in his review that it was really good. A bunch of us ordered it. It was pan fried and nicely butterflied open! This one at-least came with starch and vegetables. Mashed potatoes and broccolini. it was filling and even shared my left over with mom. So tender as I used the kitchen shear to cut the chicken for mom. I would order that again! I even ordered the Vietnamese Bruschetta and that was amazingly refreshing and unique! I love banh mi and bruschetta. Chicken liver pate spread on a large focaccia bread with tasty grilled lemongrass pork with jalapeño, pickled carrots, daikon and topped with cilantro. The dressing on it made the dish. I could eat it as my meal like Jackie K. also said. I was surprise to see a warabi salad on the menu but didn't order that but got to taste a little. The pork chop that Sherrie K. raved about is definitely on my list to try next. Tonight was the last day of the month for 20% off for Kama'aina discount. Great spot located inside a food hall. Came here for dinner around 5:30 and was sat immediately. Service is amazing they really take care of you and are knowledgeable about the menu and can answer any questions you have. Started with 2 drinks, totally forgot the name of them, but one was a spicy margarita and the other a local rum drink. They were so refreshing and delicious. We had the fix menu with prime rib and the macadamia nut crusted and fish and both were fantastic. Meat was cooked to perfection and both dishes were full of flavor. The food was excellent. I went in on a Saturday morning, I was in early and there were only a couple of other people there so I was a little worried. I was greeted promptly, sat and served very quickly. The place is on the ground floor connected to an ABC and a couple of other food places, it has a bar in the middle, and tables around it with some patio seating. I ordered the smoked salmon toast, which came with a side salad and a side of Portuguese sausage. The toast was delicious, with scrambled eggs, delicate smoked salmon, onion and capers. The salad was fresh and well dressed, and the sausage was melt in your mouth. The food was good and the service was good. Before I was done eating the place had filled up a bit and had a good vibe. But towards the back we saw a restaurant tucked away in the corner with patio seating and a big bar. We dressed more casual but it seems like a more up scale casual restaurant. We have heard about basalt before and saw prime rib on the menu so we had to give it a try. We were there around 6 on a week night and it was moderately slow. We started with the beef carpaccio which was absolutely amazing. It was refreshing and bright and reminded of us of eating pho with all the different flavors! And of course the prime rib was a hit and a very large portion. Definitely would come back to try more things on the menu that looked appetizing! When I stayed in Hawaii for four days a few months ago, we tried a few different brunch restaurants every morning, including this one. Among all the similar brunch restaurants, the picture of black charcoal bread on Yelp looked pretty interesting. When I asked about the charcoal bread, the server gave four pieces as a complementary appetizer, saying they were not usually served at brunch. The bread wasn't particularly special or overwhelming, but I really appreciated the server's kind and attentive service. I had a vegetable omelet and avocado garden toast with a side of smoked salmon. Everything was good, but the avocados weren't as fresh as those in California. Unfortunately, most avocados in Hawaii, even those from the markets, are not very fresh. Overall, though, the dishes were great enough to enjoy the Hawaiian morning vibe. read more

We must have came right before dinner because the place was mostly empty when we arrived and started to fill up when we were leaving. My husband and I both got the ribeye special. It was $39 for a 12oz ribeye. It's a good deal. Our server was great - very friendly and cheerful. I did not care for the charcoal dinner rolls. They seemed stale and they cold. Holiday cheers... What a way to wrap up the holidays 2024 which has been quite brutal though thankfully I was somewhat prepared for it but doesn't mean it was any easier, but here comes lunch at Basalt which is located in Duke's Lane which actually is quite easy to access as parking is in the Hyatt Centric and they do validate parking for 3 hours leaving you some time to browse around the area as well. The layout is quite nice with a large bar taking the heart of the floor with tables surrounding it along with a few outside as well which is what we decided on as it was a beautiful sunny afternoon after a start of a rainy morning it seems like the sun was greeting us gently as we enjoyed our lunch. Menu is nice and simple with a little bit of variety though not totally shareable items with sandwiches are three of six entrees so we decided to start with "Pork Belly Bun" which comes in a set of three so our server brilliantly asked if we wanted to add a fourth so that there's no negotiation needed the charcoal buns were perfectly steamed very fresh a delicate and the inside built like a Bahn Mi with picked carrots and daikon radish topped with cilantro and green onions with the hoisin brought it together so perfectly is a bougie start we then decided on "Steak Frites" and "Caesar salad". Steak I ordered it medium rare which came out medium which was still delicious as it was topped with a wad of herbed butter and seasonings and didn't need any steak sauce and the fries so hot and fresh seasoned perfectly with the entire heavenly bite. Pairing it with a simple Caesar salad is nice that they kept it the perfect simplicity tossed generously with dressing and crunch charcoal croutons with some parmesan it was very nice fresh bite and paired well with our steak. The service here is just a delight and kept coming back to check on us giving us moments to enjoy it all while have another round of drinks that I have no idea what I drank which was a mocktail version of their drink, the whole vibe was very relaxing and nice. Ok, I walk by your restaurant every day, I'm a local GM of a nearby restaurant. Every day I literally get sad when I see your restaurant. What are you doing? You have basically the only street level lanai in an 8 block radius and you are at the corner of easily one of the 5 busiest foot traffic intersections in the state. And you serve Italian food, a cuisine almost everyone enjoys and that has an established, successful business model that requires very little proprietary uniqueness to replicate and achieve success. You have the funding that would get most GMs physically aroused. And you share a wall with what's left of an iconic Hawaiin Landmark. I mean in order to mess that up you would have to make the outside lanai look cold and uninviting with no real barrier between the guests and the delivery truck exhaust, and the sign and and entrance look like it's to a haunted house, and you'd probably have to make your guests enter and exit through a convenience store. Cuz that's where I want to take a client to impress them, or a girl I want to see again. I walk by and I think how nice it would be to have a street entrance to a plant covered lanai with A 8 foot wall against the alley, with wicker light patio furniture and bright linens and wine, a meat and cheese board, and a Caprese salad, with Italian music playing. Ya know, an airy, fresh, escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy street right outside. A place to take a break with your friends and relax. Like stepping off the crazy busy path and entering into a different time and pressing pause while you have some wine for an hour or so. But nope, I've gotta go to the escape room entrance and have the hostess walk me through a food court, through a convenience store, through an empty cold and dark Italian restaurant and sit me at a sharp stone or metal looking table on a closed in lanai, 10 feet away from 3 clearly visible teenage tourists smoking weed by a loud delivery truck. What are you doing?? It just makes me sad, such a wasted opportunity with so much potential, I truly don't wish you any ill will, but I'd bet that I don't need to. Im sorry, I'm trying to help. I'm sure the service and food is fine, but you guys just messed up the concept. Good luck! If the owners or GM is reading this, it's time, cut your losses and do a grand reopening with a new brand. We were debating between this place and another that had their own parking lot however, we're so happy we chose here! At first, I was a bit hesitant since it's located in a food court/ market, but once inside, it didn't feel like one at all (depending where you sit). As mentioned in other posts, we parked in the Hyatt Centric parking structure and Basalt validates giving you 3 hours free. This allowed us to pick up a few souvenirs after dinner. My husband had the prime rib with mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. The horseradish served with it was a delicious variation! Nothing like the typical nose-hair burning version, but a light, whipped texture that tasted almost like sour cream. It was amazing! I had the ribeye, cooked medium, with the same sides as above. I was looking for a fine dining place in Waikiki to enjoy a nice dinner. With over 1,000 reviews, I was intrigued by Basalt and decided to give it a try. Basalt's name is inspired by a stone that is the color of charcoal, and this theme is reflected in their complimentary charcoal bread. The bread is unique, served piping hot, and makes for a delightful start to the meal. For appetizers, I chose their Adobo Chicken Wings. Priced at $18, the dish includes six pieces of chicken wings glazed in a soy vinegar glaze and served with a garlic chili dipping sauce. The wings were messy but absolutely delightful. I loved the generous coating of glaze, which gave the wings a sweet and spicy flavor. I would definitely order these again. For my main meal, I went with the Crispy Fried Half Chicken. This $25 entrée features a half Szechuan-spiced fried chicken served with a soy chili oil dipping sauce, house pickles, Asian slaw, and golden pork belly fried rice. The chicken was served hot and perfectly golden-crisp. It was flavorful and paired wonderfully with the golden pork belly fried rice, which was also delicious. The portion size was generous and satisfying. However, I didn't care for the house pickles. Served cold and consisting mainly of green beans, they didn't quite complement the rest of the dish. Overall, Basalt was a good restaurant to try. I did expect more, given the Yelp hype. While it's marketed as fine dining, I wouldn't quite categorize it that way. Came here with my husband a a friend for lunch. The restaurant is located within a little food shopping area and is easy to find. The menu is very small, so I'd recommend looking up the menu prior to going to make sure it has something you'd want. We got here around 2pm and i ordered the "love potion" which was suuuuper salt and has that "smokey" burrito mezcal. It was really bad. The mimosa was super good and pretty sweet so I definitely recommend that. After we ordered our drink, our waitress did not come back over to us until 3pm even with us trying to wave her down. We ordered the Cesar salads with chicken and avocado and the prime rib melt. They were both very good and were very good portion sizes! The place is pretty expensive though. For 3 people it came out to $130. I recommend this place if you're not in a rush and are okay with minimal options. We found this restaurant on yelp, and overall we were happy with it! They had an awesome prix fixe menu which we both took advantage of. We ordered the wings for an appetizer which were amazing! Messy though, don't wear a white shirt! Lol. The ceasar salad was amazing as was the soup which I don't remember the name. For entrees we got cod and a ribeye, which were both sooo good! We were so stuffed by the end of it we had to box the desserts for home (no pictures taken!) Our waitress was awesome, I don't remember her name. But she gave us enough space to enjoy our dinner and came back every once in a while to check on us. There is seating outside and inside and we chose for outside. I usually pick a place that has a view this one doesn't but the food is amazing! Brunch dreams do come true at Basalt Waikīkī! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm aloha vibes and seated quickly despite it being a busy morning. I ordered the beef shakshuka, and it was absolutely phenomenal--rich, flavorful, perfectly spiced, and served bubbling hot in a cast-iron skillet. Every bite was comforting and satisfying, like a hug for my taste buds. My husband had the crab cake Benedict, and it was next-level delicious. The crab cakes were packed with flavor (no fillers here!), the poached eggs were perfection, and the hollandaise was silky and just the right amount of tangy. We both cleaned our plates and spent the next ten minutes talking about how we'd come back just for those dishes alone. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the atmosphere was stylish yet relaxed--perfect for a leisurely weekend brunch. This was a long overdue review because it was meant to post 3 months ago. I started writing it but forgot to complete it. It was our 3rd time dinning at Basalt in Honolulu. We visit Hawaii every year and Basalt had been our must-go since a few years ago. However, this time the check in at host stand was confusing. We used to check in at the stand inside the market. This time they had something to block it but the stand was still there with no hostess. There wasn't any sign for check-in process so we just stood there and waited for 5-6min. Until we reached out to a staff and he told us the host stand is now outside. Since we had a reservation, we were seated within a few minutes. We were told that our server was Paige but she didn't come to us until after we ordered our cocktails. It was the host, Tylor who took our drink orders. After Paige brought us the drinks, she had been great since then. They gave us complimentary bread, which was a nice touch with the butter. Also ordered oysters as appetizers, which were amazingly fresh and sweet. We both ordered their prime rib steaks as our main course; they were perfectly cooked (medium), tender and flavorful. The restrooms were outside of the restaurant and required code to enter, which was somewhat inconvenient and not as clean as I expected (felt like I was at a Starbucks). Didn't expect much coming here for dinner. It was near our hotel and thought it was another tourist trap, but wow, were we so unexpectedly impressed! One of the best meals we've had so far in Waikiki- no wonder it was top rated the last few years. For drinks, we started off with the Basalt Mai Tai ($15) and Lilikoi Punch ($14). The Lilikoi Punch was a tad too sweet for me, but both really well made. For our second round, we ordered an Old Fashioned and Cool Burn ($13). Again, both really well made drinks! Do yourself a favor and order the Prime Rib ($39 for 10 oz). We love going to House of Prime Rib in San Francisco, but this just blew that of the water. Order it medium rare. It comes with garlic mashed potatoes and a veggie medley. The au jus and horseradish were the icing on top. If you're looking for something lighter, go for the Miso Black Cod ($49). The sauce makes you keep going back for more. Paired with the mushrooms and bok choy it was perfection. I practically drank the dashi nage! It also comes with a big bowl of rice, which I thought they could have left without or made it half the size, but it was appreciated. For dessert, we opted for the Lilikoi Crème Brûlée ($10). Not really my thing, but my bf enjoyed it. Overall the service was fantastic. From the beginning, our server Garret was friendly, efficient, attentive, and offered suggestions on what was popular/ what his faves were without being asked. Made our first dinner on Oahu raise the standards for the rest our trip. Give Basalt a try- you won't regret it! read more

One of our favorite restaurants in Honolulu! We came here for breakfast and shared the loco moco and pancakes--both were amazing. Loco Moco: This was hands down the best loco moco we had in Hawaii! The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the rice had mushrooms and meat. Pancakes: This black charcoal pancakes were fluffy and faintly coconut flavor. They were huge--perfect for sharing with 4 people. 2025/08/11 update First visit after they updated their menu. I got the mushroom risotto, which was damn good -- rich in flavor with an amazing aroma. We also ordered the lup cheong, pork chop, and half chicken -- all of which were delicious. The waiters and waitresses were super nice. Basalt is a nice clean restaurant next to the marketplace on Kuhio. The service is very friendly and efficient. The food is better than average but not amazing. We got the pork carbonara which had very flavorful and tender pork but the noodles were slightly chewy. The prix fixe menu was decent. The salad was actually pretty good with fresh vegetables and nice dressing. The ribeye was a bit tough, possibly because it was cut very thin and cooked medium. The beef had no depth of flavor, but the mashed potatoes and vegetables were good. The cheesecake was weird and fluffy. I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Upon looking for breakfast places on Google, I stumbled upon this one that offered something called "Charcoal Pancakes." The reviews said great things about it and the color itself made it exotic. Therefore, I went ahead and ordered that with a side of eggs & bacon. The strawberry jam paired SO well with it & i like that the whip cream was also dark in color. Definitely recommend it if you stop by for breakfast. We sat outside as there was nobody inside and the day was beautiful. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Overall, I'd go back and order something from their lunch menu to try something new. read more

Came here on a recommendation from a friend and Badalt did not disappoint. Smaller menu and it was still difficult to chose. Between the chicken, multiple seafood dishes and braised ribs it was tough. Service was good, coffee was great desserts looked too weird for any of our liking ( disappointed by that ). We had such a good experience here. We sat at the bar for some drinks and apps and the food was so good we ended up splitting an entree as well. Service at the bar was fantastic. Very reasonably priced for the Waikiki area. I highly recommend the beef carpaccio-- it had an Asian flair that made it so delicious and interesting. Food: 10/10 literally couldn't pick between the pork belly fried rice and the loco moco, so our waiter suggested a side pork belly and the loco moco as a meal. And winners because I got to taste both. Pork belly was super soft and the taste was great. Loco moco and fried rice were awesome. I also got an avocado toast, I should've ordered it with an egg but It was still great. I'm not much of a pancake gal but my other half ordered it for himself and it was actually pretty good. The best meal we had in Hawaii, hands down! I met a friendly lady and her husband on my hike up to Makapuu, who recommended this hidden gem. They mentioned the charcoal pancakes were a must-try, I was a little hesitant but when I hear "hidden gem" I am just too curious! Luckily we were able to make it to breakfast here on our last day in Hawaii. This restaurant is at the back of the Duke's Lane Market, which from the street just looks like another market. Truly hidden indeed! We were seated immediately which was nice for a change as many popular restaurants in Waikiki require some wait time. We ordered the signature items on the menu including the loco moco, pork belly fried rice, tapislog and of course, the charcoal buttermilk pancakes! The server gave us small plates for our family to share without us needed to ask. We also had our waters refilled throughout. Appreciate the attention to detail and excellent service! The loco moco had a sunny side egg on top of a wagyu beef patty, mushroom gravy and bacon fried rice. This was sooo delicious! The wagyu was melt-in-your-mouth juicy and the rice soaked up all the goodness of the egg yolk. Next up the pork belly fried rice, which came with scrambled eggs and roasted pork belly on the bacon fried rice. This was also amazing! These were protein heavy dishes but were so yummy, not greasy or overly salty. The tapislog was probably my least favourite but only because I am not a huge fan of pickles, but my family did enjoy this dish. The star of the meal was definitely the charcoal buttermilk pancakes! It came with a guava strawberry sauce that paired perfectly with the whipped cream and fresh berries. The pancakes itself were so fluffy and soft. For a dessert dish, it was not overly sweet - perfect for my Asian taste buds. Just an unforgettable meal, flavourful dishes all around! read more
