Server was awesome but forgot to bring me a steak knife after requesting. Used the butter knife. Ambience, while touristy, is trendy and bar area sizable. When we were served our food, the server explained what we ordered which I always appreciate. The menu was simple but really there was something for everyone. Food was delicious. I got the prime rib medium because it seemed like they knew how to make a steak. They did (usually order medium rare to get things to come out medium. My wife got the ahi tuna and her meal was equally aesthetically pleasing as it was flavorful. The service was just as good as the food and our waitress was on top of everything without being over bearing. Can't recommend this restaurant enough if you're ever on Oahu and want to get off the main drag and enjoy a delicious and intimate meal. read more

My friend made reservation for my early birthday celebration on Saturday. We all had a great time at Basalt. Parking at Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach and they validate 3 hours parking. The atmosphere was very clean and lights were pretty bright. Our server was very friendly and he explained the menu for us. I didn't get his name but he's a Chinese server. Food was delicious. I ordered the $50 Prix Fixed Menu. I highly recommend this menu as it's worth it. The ribeye steak was very juicy and tender. Also, the mashed potato was really moist. I chose the dark chocolate mousse cake for dessert and I enjoyed every single bite. My friends ordered the Miso Pork Belly Carbonara and she said it's good but pretty spicy. The Macadamia Nuts Crusted Fish was just OK, it was pretty dried. The server surprised me and gave a piece of Cheesecake as my birthday dessert. It was SO good! Yes yes yes. One of the best meals we had in Hawaii. Went for breakfast. Seated quickly, greated quickly and had a cup of coffee in hand with 5 mins of stepping into the restaurant. As others have said, don't be put off by the fact it is in the back of an ABC. Once you sit you will forget quickly. The space is nicely decorated and feels completely separate. We went to Basalt Waikiki to celebrate Valentine's Day with family. The food was very good, I ordered the miso butterfish, hubby ordered the mac nut crusted fish and others ordered the prime rib or paella. The miso butterfish was excellent. Came with white rice and I immediately added it to my plate to soak up the broth.....yummy. My hubbs was a little disappointed, he felt the mac nut fish was too tomato-ey. The paella was massive and delicious. Would order the paella next time. Service was excellent..they tack on an automatic %20 tip. However, the tip was well deserved. One of my absolute favorite things about this place is that they change their menu, and it's more often than you think. The chef has an exquisite palette and imagination that brings culinary excellence of blending some of the most unique and intriguing ingredients to bring you a food experience like no other. This trip I stopped in and found a new menu and even the side table black rolls have officially been removed showing that the best won't always last! The mushroom risotto and Singapore clams is what I went with this trip and neither disappointed. The clams were by far the best I've ever had and the subtle spice was perfect with every bite. It wasn't a spice you couldn't enjoy but rather one you wanted to keep going back for. The risotto was absolutely on point to cooking and the mushrooms was a melody of flavors adding to the touch. The weather was also perfect to be able to sit on the patio which I usually enjoy when it's not raining. Service is always above and beyond here and I've never made reservation and have always had the ability to get a table or sit at the bar without waiting. Had a chance to dine in at Basalt yesterday and it was a nice time. We came here for our honeymoon dinner and were excited to try this place out after seeing the wonderful reviews. This spot had a sweet ambiance - we ended up sitting outside where there was lots of open space which i liked. The service was also really sweet, it was a little slow - but the staff did try their best. They even told us at the end of the night that they would not take any tip (which we still gave) since they were understaffed. They also gave us this yummy charcoal bread with whipped butter to start which was nice. For the food we tried: * Tomato soup - this was part of their $50 pre fix menu which one of us got and this was yummy. This was made from local Hawaiian tomatoes and was hearty. * miso black cod - this dish was delicious as the fish was flakey and in a delicious broth. This also came with some bokchoy and mushrooms and was really well made. There was a side of rice to accompany the dish * Fried chicken - you could tell this was made fresh and the sauce to dip the chicken in was really yummy. This also came with the pork belly fried rice which I enjoyed as well as a side of green beans * Basque cheesecake - for our dessert we got this and it was delicious and well made. This came with a berry compote which had a nice tart like taste which went well with the creamy cake * Iilikoi crème brulee - We really loved this dish. I am a huge fan of anything passion fruit and this dish delivered. This was creamy with the crunchiness of the caramelized sugar and i loved how the passion fruit flavor was not overpowering. We came here around 10:30 AM after our morning flight and it wasn't crowded at all. There are other shops that share the building space (like a mini food hall with an ABC store too). The Better Than a Pina Colada drink was very sweet from the pineapple, coconut, and orange juices, with a frozen slushy texture. I could barely taste the alcohol/rum but the subtle bitterness was definitely there. Our dishes came out in 5-10 minutes. We shared a Loco Moco and added a side of pork belly since both have pretty much the same things anyway - egg and fried rice - just different meats. The fried rice had little bacon pieces, mushroom, green onions and flecks of black pepper. This was really savory. The hamburger patty was pretty dry though (it says Wagyu beef patty on the menu but tasted like normal 90 or 93% lean beef you get at the grocery store). The two eggs were pretty runny and spilled out easily. The first piece of pork belly I tried was also a bit dry (not crispy but a little burnt). Until I got to the outer edge and it suddenly turned into a delicious melt in your mouth texture! I think it was only seasoned with a tiny bit of salt but the char added flavor. read more

Not sure I understand all the positive hype, however our server Amber carried the day. Dropped in here for two 10 oz Prime Ribs and four beverages. A 10-ounce size Prime Rib rings up at $36...I mention the cost because from my photo I would estimate 6 of those ounces were 100% fat. I realize prime rib has a fat cap (Prime Rib Eye) but not normally to this extreme, this left about 6-7 bites. Vegetables were significantly undercooked, but the potatoes were on point. Drinks were solid (Mai Tai and Kim Crawford). Nice vibe on the patio. Bottom line: 2 Mai Thais, a wine and beer - with modest prime rib cuts, tax and tip, just over $150. Located inside of Dukes Lane Market. When you first walk through, it's like a full-on grocery store, head towards the back you'll have the host stand/restaurant. The ambiance wasn't terrible, more on the casual side, with patrons milling about throughout the storefront. Parking is located inside of Hyatt Centric or you can try your luck through various parking garage locations within Waikiki. The menu is short and sweet, so we opted for the prix fixe menu so that we could try a little bit of everything. The miso black cod was probably my most favorite dish of the evening. The fish was prepared nicely on top of a bed of white rice and veggies. Though, the ribeye steak was overly salted for my liking and the lobster bisque was missing something. As for the service, it felt a little off. Our server started off great, providing us water, beverages and said he would give us a few minutes to decide. Though he didn't come back for another 20 minutes, which by then we were wondering if he'd gone on break. The food took a bit to come out, probably because it was coursed, but we ended up being one of the last to leave, though we got there almost 3 hours before closing. And for me personally, never having had charcoal infused menu items before (charcoal rolls), I noticed my tummy was not too happy for a couple of days after. The other individuals in the party were fine, so we knew it wasn't food poisoning. But just my experience. Right next to the International Market Place and within its own busy shopping mall, this casual New American spot turned out to be a lucky find for Jamie W. and me in the wilds of Waikiki. We were looking for dinner and because of the long lines, frankly were about to give up and head to 7-Eleven for a couple of egg salad sandos. Fortunately there was plenty of space here. Katie are Bar Tender/Server was amazing! we sat at the bar and enjoyed the Chocolate Lava cake along with the Grand Marnier Mousse cake. We have been to Basalt for breakfast many times. The food and service were always spot on. On our recent visit, this was not the case. I ordered over easy eggs but I received sunny side up with uncooked egg whites. Our server sent my plate back to the kitchen only to serve me very hard cooked eggs. All the while, my husband was eating his breakfast while I was waiting. They used to serve really good breakfast potatoes but they have been replaced with thick frozen fries which is a downgrade. We're bummed that the kitchen and food are not what they once were. We won't be back. read more

At the time of my visit in April 2024, Basalt was advertising some really great dinner deals. Basalt is in an easy location inside Duke's Lane Eatery with free parking - same as that for the Hyatt Centric, which is a huge plus in Honolulu. We started with the dramatic complimentary bread basket with black charcoal hued bread and butter. From there we tried the crunchy quinoa shrimp and fattoush salad, which were nice apps/sides. The shrimp had the lightest of breading, it was crispy balls clinging to the outside which made it light. The salad was a pretty generous portion and our group shared it easily. The reason for our visit was the Prime Rib, classically served with green beans/carrots and mashed potatoes. It was well cooked. The other entree was the Szechuan fried chicken with a dipping sauce and oddly, a weird condiment bowl of green beans that we didn't like. Overall, a good meal. read more

If it had been more tender I would have no complaints. Charcoal berry pancakes- these were really good. If you're goin for brunch this would be a nice sweet dish to share Kahlua pork tacos- The pork was a bit dry. I didn't think it was really that much better than what I can get on the mainland. I also think the ratio of meat to like other stuff wasn't great. Great value if you want protein tho. Imo it was just too much meat and maybe there could have been something like avocado or more salsa. I also didn't really love the flavor of the salsa tho again there wasn't much of it so I barely tasted any flavor besides just meat. Came here at 11 AM on my own for brunch on a Tuesday. There were only a handful of other diners. I've always seen the restaurant name outside, but was surprised to see it's actually attached to the Duke's store. Basalt is my cousins' favorite place to eat in the area. They rave about the happy hour. Although I didn't make it for happy hour, I think it was still a great choice for a first meal of the day. I was torn between the pork belly fried rice and the loco moco. I haven't had a loco moco blow away before, but I think this is one of the best I've had. The garlic fried rice was tasty, moist, and the flavor of the beef was high-quality. I especially liked the golden eggs on top! It came with two pieces of fruit, a pineapple and an orange, and I got toast. I also got coffee with unlimited refills, which were they were very attentive to. I felt a bit early to start drinking, but I thought why not, the mai tai looked really beautiful and it was my last day on the island. And it was as delicious as it looked! My server, Thuy, delivered exceptional service. I thought the price was great for the quality and service that I got too. (Last visited December 5, 2022.) On vacation in Hawaii for a couple of weeks and hanging out in Waikiki for the first week! So my wife did her Yelp due-diligence and found this place! At the time it had over 1,300 reviews with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5! I mmmeeeaaannn, that MUST mean this place is off the chain! So here's how things went at Basalt! Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is located in downtown Waikiki in the touristy district of course. No private parking or anything like that, but it's Hawaii and downtown, what did you expect? Lol. Inside Duke's Lane Market Eatery is this beautifully modern and upscale restaurant. There's high ceilings, stainless steel everywhere, you can see right into the huge kitchen, there's a bar right smack-dab in the middle of the place where the bar rail wraps all the way around it. I loved the open concept and use of contemporary touches. It wasn't too loud inside, but we actually sat outside, duh, it's Hawaii and it was actually louder out there due to the energy of the city. Service: I can't remember who took care of us, but we had no issues whatsoever. Chef Gary even stopped by a couple of times to check on us and it's always a pleasure when the man over the stove takes time out of his day to come talk to customers. Food: First up was the Bourbon & Blues cocktail! In it is whatever bourbon you'd like (which could really switch up the flavors), muddled blueberry, lemon juice, ginger cinnamon simple syrup and garnished with an orange peel. It was pretty tasty and gave me holiday vibes due to the cinnamon. There was a bite of some kind on the back end, definitely sweet and the bourbon certainly made an appearance. It was a bit on the sweeter side for me, but still a well-crafted cocktail. The complimentary bread for the table was one of the most interesting varieties I've ever seen. It was jet black and represented actual basalt, which is the volcanic rock that is leftover after an eruption. Pretty cool. The roll was soft and served with a whipped butter. It didn't taste anything like what it looks. Lol. The butter could use some salt, but it was all good. Next up were the duck empanadas which is one of the dishes this place is well-known for. Inside is duck, aged goat cheese, brandied cherries, pickled avocado and served with an avocado lime crema. These absolutely BLEW ME AWAY. The exterior was crispy and flakey, yet soft and tender. I was left speechless. The duck was so succulent, tender and seasoned so well. The crema worked with it so well and I'd made a whole meal out of these had I not wanted to try other things. Lol. Next up were the Adobo Chicken Wings, what I was most excited for! Usually Adobo is a dry seasoning, but here they've made a freaking glaze out of it! It's a soy-vinegar glaze with a garlic chili dipping sauce. They're a regular size, sticky, temperature hot and CRAZY tender. The meat just fell off the bone and even the bones separated from themselves. Lol. It's a sweet-salty glaze that's just full of flavor, but a bit hard to describe. The garlic-chili dipping sauce was an excellent balance too. Next up is the Charred Tako (octopus)! I wouldn't order this usually, but babe really likes this stuff, so I had to give it a shot! This is a beautifully presented plate with some potatoes and some crazy sauces I can't really spell. Lol. The sauce was super smokey, the octopus was a bit chewy and tender, but it's just not really my thing. However, I loved the char on the exterior. Next up were the Togarashi Wings! These are a dry rub with a crispy, fluffy skin. It's also served with the same garlic chili dipping sauce. These were salty, spicy and just a well-blended flavor profile. If I had to describe it... the flavors sort of danced all over your mouth touching different parts. It was fascinating. I did enjoy these more than the other flavor. Last, but not least was the basque-style cheesecake. It's cooked at a very high temperature which caramelizes the top layer of sugar. It was creamy, moist and didn't need any sauce! Though, being a New Yorker, nothing beats a good New York style cheesecake with a fruit compote! Value: This place isn't cheap. If you've read this far, you know wings, octopus and stuff like that just isn't cheap. It's not fine-dining cheap, but it's definitely the upper edge of mid-range for sure. We were there about a month ago, celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary, my husband found this amazing restaurant the food was absolutely delicious, the baby ribs out of this world so tender and full of flavor.. This was the only restaurant that they took the time to congratulate us I believe Jose is the name of the manager absolutely amazing human being. He took the time and talked to us, also Matt take good care of us, I had never received this kind of treatment before absolutely amazing they truly made us feel welcome. It was a challenge finding nearby brunch past hotel dining hours in Waikiki, but I'm so glad we hoofed the few extra blocks to get here. The food was very good, the breezy patio ambience a delight, and the staff terrific. Special shoutout to our server Trillion, who hit everything exactly on the mark. I was very impressed that he gave us unsolicited fresh plates and silverware for our shared brunch-dessert pancakes (my husband INSISTS on a fresh fork, and usually it's something sought rather than offered), but even more so when I asked for a coffee warmup and he said "let me bring you a fresh hot cup," sure enough, the brew was only moments old and piping hot. A nice portion of ahí and dressing is on the side to add to your liking. The tofu has a beautiful flavor and texture that was unbelievable (it's the entire bottom of the bowl). Basalt is a moderately upscale restaurant dining experience with a nice but basic interior and outdoor seating area. Ideal if you're looking for something a bit nicer but with a reasonably priced menu. Would recommend the Charcoal Buttermilk Pancakes, it comes with a delicious guava-strawberry sauce and topped with whipped cream and mixed berries. The Loco Moco was also good, and I appreciate the effort that went into the presentation, however I feel that other restaurants offer a better version with more meat, rice, and gravy. But overall I feel this place still deserves 5-stars because everything was cooked perfectly, service was excellent, and the menu prices are very reasonable for Waikiki. read more
