It's breakfast / brunch -- we as a large group of nine were hungry and also didn't want to wait an hour. We came across Basalt, asked the server about the wait time. Within a few minutes, our table was ready. The staff were very attentive and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Due to the sunny weather and humidity, we choose outdoor seating. It was very humid but there was a slight breeze here and there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a bit loud due to the cars passing by / close to the garage entrance and other people walking by.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]But overall, the ambiance is simple and expected for outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had ordered several entrees and we shared so it was a nice mixed of food. We had three of the sandwiches, pancakes, ribs, salad and pasta. The food was delicious but my favorite would be the garlic chicken sandwich and charcoal buttermilk pancakes. Lovely meal and experience, would definitely recommend. There is something on the menu for everyone. Looking forward to dining here, again!

Delicious food! Especially the Basalt Breakfast and Avocado Toast. The Beef Shakusha was tasty but too salty for me. The Basalt Breakfast serving was so generous. Indoor AC or outdoor seating. Great service. Reservations accepted on Open Table. Parking at the Hyatt Centric Hotel- valet on Kuhio Ave or self parking via Seaside Ave. (one way street towards the mountain).

I loved this place! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very nice ambiance outdoors[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], lovely food, 3 hours of parking validated. Lovely drinks. Overall I recommend!

Another recommendation on the Hyatt Centric website and located in Duke's Marketplace, this place is a gem. The prime rib and beef carpaccio were excellent, highly recommend. We were celebrating a birthday and they printed a Happy Birthday menu, a nice gesture that shows they love their customers. If you're a guest at the Hyatt Centric, make sure to tell them for a free crab cake!

It had been a while since my last visit, and this time I decided to try their happy hour (2-5 pm, with the last food order at 4:30 pm, available only at the bar counter). There were several people seated at the bar and only one bartender working, but he was efficient and attentive. I ordered one of the well drinks, which I wasn't familiar with. The kind bartender explained that it's simply a basic liquor mixed with something like soda. I ended up having a vodka tonic, and it was nice and strong. For food, I tried the Baked Mussels (Lup cheong sausage and mayo-crusted green-lip mussels) and the Lilikoi Chicken Wings (passion fruit-glazed mid-joint wings with sesame seeds). The mussels were cooked perfectly. I didn't really notice the taste of the sausage, but that didn't bother me since I mainly wanted to enjoy the flavor of the mussels. The wings were good as well, though they were very sticky, so I wish they had provided wet napkins. Overall, I enjoyed both the drinks and the food. It's a nice, quick, and reasonably priced spot to grab a bite in the middle of the busy Waikiki area.

First of all the food here is absolutely delicious! My favorite dishes were the Loco moco, the Basalt breakfast, and the glorious Charcoal pancakes! The waitress was so kind and showed us the most popular and delicious dishes on their menu. They had a had a nice background ambiance. We got seated almost immediately and they had the food brought out so quickly that I didn't even had the time to take a sip of my water! Overall ll I give this place a nice five stars!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is busy and noisy due to its location but wasn't an issue, just a fact.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was great and the servers knew the menu well and have recommendations The food menu is somewhat limited but good options nonetheless. My favorite are the charcoal pancakes. Sooooooo good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've come many times and will continue because it's nice to sit outside and have a nice breakfast[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Happy hour is from 2-5pm daily and is only offered at the bar (bummer, because it looks like they have a nice outdoor area...)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The prices on the HH drinks were good and I'm always glad when they have local beers on draft. However, I was pretty underwhelmed by the food. Garlic chicken sliders: Instead of having one piece of chicken, it was multiple small pieces of chicken, which means they kept falling out of the sandwich. They were also soft - and so was the mac salad on the sandwich, so there was no textural contrast. It probably would've been much better if the chicken was crispy. Garlic soy fries: Interesting shape! They were crispy on the outside but were sitting in the sauce, so they could get soggy if they sat too long. Overall it just felt like everything was a touch too sweet and needed a hit of acid or salt or something to punch it up.

I had a nice breakfast here. Service was good and breakfast was tasty. I went in with expectations that everything in the area will be priced at a Waikiki cost so I felt the money paid was worth it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When walking by a few times, I was surprised to see this place nearly empty.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Give them a chance and you'll be satisfied.

Last night was my last night in Waikiki and I wanted to treat myself to a nice dinner. I had been a few years back for breakfast and remembered the food being delicious. I sat at the bar and was promptly greeted by the bartender. He was friendly and served me a water while I looked at the drink menu. I ended up getting the Maui Brewing Company Pineapple Hana. It is one of my favorites. I then showed my allergy card and asked if the bartender can show this to the chef and see if there was anything I could eat. If not I would have a couple of drinks. I was excited that he came back with a couple options. I decided on the gnocchi with spinach, tomato sauce, and sausage. It usually comes with eggplant, but I was unable eat it. It was delicious and I ate the entire dish! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibe of Basalt is amazing as well. There were people watching the World Cup.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I truly enjoyed my dinner there. I highly recommend you check it out m

Rodd helped me plan my mom's 60th birthday dinner here at Basalt and they exceeded in impressing all 14 people! They helped me curate a 3 course menu that fit perfectly with our group and the the pricing was more than fair for the amount and quality of the food we received. I have to give huge props to Rodd and his team, especially our waitress Bina, for such an outstanding job. We all enjoyed everything, from the salad starters down to our desserts, everything was perfect! Our meal started off with the house salad, perfectly dressed & great size for an app. Then our guests had 3 items to choose from: fish, chicken or gnocchi with sausage. I chose the fresh catch of the day which was marlin. It did not disappoint. Loooved the cook on it. It came with veggies and white rice and was perfectly portioned. I tasted the chicken and the gravy was amazing along with the mashed potatoes. Loved how lightly the skin was fried. Also tasted the gnocchi which was really flavorful as well. The third course was a dessert option of a mochi brownie or POG (Passfruit, Orange & Guava) mousse. Both options were great as it provided a chocolate and non-chocolate dessert. I liked the brownie the best! Everyone had nothing but great things to say about their meals. I definitely recommend Basalt for any occasion! Appreciate Rodd, Bina and everyone at Basalt in creating a memorable experience for my mom's birthday. Thank you times a thousand!

Had a wonderful brunch at Basalt. I had a tasty skillet mixed with steak, French fries, and over easy eggs. My dish had alot of personality. My dessert was a fruit mousse cake slice that was flavorful and different from the usual chocolate mousse served in most restaurants. The service was very courteous and prompt.

The food was okay, drinks were not good at all. Everything was highly overpriced for a restaurant in the middle of a supermarket.

There are several dishes marked gluten-free. For the other dishes, you would have to request a gluten-free preparation. In that sense, I think your selection would be pretty good.

Our waitress, Alyssa (sp?), was terrific - friendly, energetic, and gave great recommendations. When Alyssa came to take our drink orders, I asked if the mai tai could be made on the sweeter said. She said it couldn't but gave me other recommendations when I asked for drinks that are on the sweeter side. One of those drinks was the meringue di cerdo, which is a drink version of lemon meringue pie (my fave!) and it was perfectly lemony and more on the sweeter side. My mom got an elderflower drink, which she said was just ok. I got the Cioppino and quinoa cakes. The cioppino had a rich seafood flavor that I haven't seen in other versions of the dish I've tried. It came with toast with romanesco sauce. The sauce had a kick without being overly spicy. The quinoa cakes had a similar taste and texture to falafel and were topped with avocado. They were delicious but a little bit on the heavy side. My mom got the beet salad and the cavatappi with sausage, both of which were specials. Though I didn't try the pasta, I did try some of the beet salad. Beets were cooked well. We loved the crispy shallots. We were full so no room for dessert! Only downside was the noise as we were first seated but it seemed to quiet down during our time at Fete. Would recommend/return!

He described everything with such care that it was hard not to order everything! I'd highly recommend a reservation as there was not an empty table the entire two hours we were there. The restaurant is on the smaller side so it can get quite loud but our table had great conversations and a overall lovely time. Appetizer: We ordered the konpachi hush puppies (apologies, they had a nicer name but this is how they were described to us) and they were delicious! I'm not a lover of fish, but these were so flavorful and the sauce paired perfectly with it. Drinks: I had the meringue di cedri to drink and it was akin to a lemon drop (10/10) it was sippable and lasted my whole meal. Husband had the Hana Koa Rice Breaker, which is one of his favorites as its smooth and pairs well with honestly anything. Entree: You will be missing out if you don't get the lemon risotto. I ordered it with the prosciutto and it may be one of the best meals I've had in Hawaii. The zucchini is done two ways in it: diced to be mixed in with the risotto and thinly sliced and grilled on top of the risotto. The panko crumbs on top really solidified the plate for me as top tier as risotto can get to be boring to eat after a few bites as they can lack texture, but not this risotto! Every bite was a journey and it was a very filling meal. My husband ordered the Korean steak and said it was better than some of the local steakhouses we had gone to. Our friend ordered the spaghetti carbonara and enjoyed it as well. Dessert: We were encouraged to try the Rocky Road ice cream and decided it was a must have when you visit. It was creamy, rich and delectable. We also opted to try the dessert special of the evening which was a Lilikoi cheesecake with a chocolate mousse. The cheesecake had a sour tang to it and the chocolate mousse partner with it to balance it out so it wasn't overly sweet. We loved it and I know in a few days we'll be craving this meal all over again!

From the warmest hospitality to the best food we had in Honolulu, XO completely exceeded our expectations. We only wish we had a restaurant like this back home in Chicago. Every dish was memorable. The Hamachi Crudo was the best we had on the island, fresh, vibrant, and perfectly citrusy balanced. The fried chicken absolutely lived up to the hype and then some. My personal favorite was the perfectly seared scallop with crusted shrimp, an unforgettable combination. My husband and I also decided to add the salmon, and we were so glad we did. Every bite was plump, fresh, and beautifully blackened. What truly blew us away was the value. We've been fortunate enough to dine at Alinea and EL Ideas in Chicago, and XO reminded us of what those restaurants might have inspired at a fraction of the price. The level of creativity, execution, and care that goes into every plate is extraordinary, yet the experience is incredibly approachable. We left completely satisfied, already talking about when we could come back. One bonus, if it's your thing! Came with two spreads: pimiento cheese and honey butter. Biscuits had were not the tradional hard crust flaky layer type. They were more fluffy inside with smoother crust similar to the outside layer of a cake. Battery yummy. The better entree was the Chilean Seabass. One of the best sauces I've had on seafood. The sauce was perfect. Smooth blend of miso, cream, miron and what tasted like black sesame. Slightly sweet. Not too heavy. The Seabass was also perfectly cooked; springy and moist. The mushroom and spinach tasted like they were soaked on sweet white wine. Came with white rice topped with furikake. Pricey at $50 but worth it. The Creole Pasta had lots of real crab topping the pasta. Succulent shrimp mixed in the pasta. Seafood was fresh. The creamy sauce was not too thick but could use a little more of the creole seasoning. I expected it to be a little spicy but it was not. Good serving size. Came with two slices of toast. It's closer to Alfredo sauce but with the paprika taste. The staff were all so professional but chill and naturally friendly at the same time. One of the nicest restaurant staff I've met. The progression of the tasting menu kept getting better, from the dry-aged Kona kampachi and Hokkaido scallop to the outstanding Washugyu flat iron galbi. The snacks were also a great introduction to the meal, especially the bourbon barrel smoked salmon toast and the oyster with yuzu kosho. Those may have been my favorite bites of the night, and that's saying something because I'm usually not a big fan of salmon. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. A special shout-out to Jordan, who patiently answered all of our questions and helped make the evening even more enjoyable. The cocktail pairing was one of the highlights of the experience. Every drink was thoughtfully crafted and complemented the dishes perfectly. It didn't feel like an afterthought--it was an integral part of the meal and among the best cocktail pairings I've had. My only minor criticism was the beef and daikon broth served alongside the Washugyu. The flavors were excellent, but I wish the broth had been served a little hotter, as it would have made an already fantastic dish even better. Dessert was equally memorable, especially the seasonal sweet corn shave ice with black sesame orgeat. The lilikoi custard pie with whipped kinako cream was a nice finishing touch. Overall, MĀZE delivers one of the most creative and memorable dining experiences in Honolulu. The quality of the ingredients, attention to detail, and flawless execution make it well worth the visit. MĀZE was the standout highlight meal of my trip to Hawaii this year. The chef's menu with drink…read morepairing was easily Michelin-star worthy. Taste, presentation, service, ambiance -- MĀZE really had it all nailed down. If there's one meal you should book for your trip, make it MĀZE. Although the menu looks short, it is deceptively filling. You start off your meal with a few amuse bouche bites. It's really a wonderful start, because the salmon toast was one of the best bites I had all night. The smoked salmon was melt in your mouth tender and the toast was fried to perfection. Another bite I really enjoyed early on was their "Fat bastard" oyster. I've never had this type of oyster before, but this one was especially plump, sweet, and had just the right amount of brininess to it. There's honestly not a single straightforward bite across the courses: everything has layers upon layers of flavor and a complexity that really accentuates the talent of the head chef. After the first course, there's an option to add a supplemental course for $34 -- a "Wagyu musubi". I cannot emphasize enough that this addition is a must. If you're coming as a couple, it's large enough that you're able to share a single one so that each person gets two bites. This bite is as delicious as it looks. The Wagyu is rich and fatty, and the crispy nori is the textural element that breaks up the melt-in-your-mouth texture of the beef. The tare delicately brushed on top adds a bit of saltiness to the dish and doesn't take away from the enjoyment and appreciation of the Wagyu itself. Another bite that I'll forever remember is the Jeju abalone dish. Served over a bed of finely minced edamame and served in a chicken jus, the dish had sweet, savory, umami, and all the right textures. I ate this dish especially slowly because I wanted to savor each and every bite for as long as possible. The abalone is tender and cooked perfectly -- not rubbery whatsoever. I overheard a chef saying that the tasting menu changes every month, and we had visited when they were mid-cycle. I believe some of the permanent menu items include the bourbon barrel smoked salmon toast and the wagyu musubi, but I really hope to see the Jeju abalone dish again someday when I visit in the future. Since MĀZE is from the the duo behind the famous cocktail bar -- Bar Leather Apron, just down the street, you would expect nothing less than extraordinary cocktails for the cocktail pairing. I can confidently say that there was not a single drink pairing that I was disappointed with -- both on the alcoholic and non-alcoholic side. My favorite cocktail of the night was their take on an Old Fashioned that was served with the Washugyu flat iron galbi course. I simply cannot say enough good things about MĀZE. Do yourself a favor and book a reservation right after you book your plan tickets to Oahu -- you won't regret it.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and decided to try Solera since we had a breakfast credit each morning. WOW is all I have to say. The food was absolutely incredible. We each got a drink--I ordered a matcha and he got a latte, and both were so good. For food, we shared the Hawaiian omelette, and they did not hold back on the meat. The service was top-notch. Our servers were attentive without being overbearing and checked in just the right amount, which always makes a difference. I would highly recommend Solera for both drinks and food--definitely worth a visit.

There were wine specials and I took advantage of this offering, choosing a 2023 Beaune Boucherottes from Louis Jadot. Our server (Malama) brought a 2021, which was great from my perspective. This wine sells for $180 and was listed at $177; what a deal! We chose Bone Marrow ($32), Beets and Strawberry Salad ($28) as our starters. Entrees were the Butchers Cut, which offered Filet, Ribeye or NY Strip ($70). I chose the NY strip and ordered Foie Gras ($32) to accompany it. Our other entrée was the Huli Hainan Chicken Plate ($42). Malama told us the Foie Gras was a mousse, so I asked her to bring it out with the other two appetizers. The Bone Marrow plate came with two halves of bone and four pieces of toasted ciabatta. The Foie Gras dish was interesting ... Three piped dollops of foie gras mousse, with three quenelles of a pineapple mostarda and a plate of Madeleines. The Beets & Strawberry Salad was a visual and taste treat ... It was my favorite of the three starters. The foie gras atop the Madeleine was too sweet for our palates; it was much more successful on the toasted ciabatta that accompanied the bone marrow. The NY Strip came sliced, with another bone marrow and mashed potatoes. The Hainan Chicken came with ginger scallion rice, lomi tomato chile, dark soy (which was very watery), slices of cucumber and cilantro. The chicken was the least successful dish we've had here. I give the executive chef kudos to add variety to the menu. The steak came with a container of miso bordelaise ... I thought it was okay, my tablemate didn't like it. I tried the foie gras mousse on pieces of steak ... It was okay. We had the steak and chicken dishes boxed and perused the dessert menu. I don't usually eat dessert so the decision on what to order is left to my fellow foodie. She chose the Flourless Chocolate Cake ($16); I asked for a cup of coffee ($11). The cake was rich and dense, almost like fudge. We boxed that up ... My fellow foodie has enough food for next week. What did we think? The décor is pretty much the same as when it operated as La Vie, except for the addition of black tablecloths. There was a pianist playing near the bar ... That added a nice touch to the ambience of the place. Service was fine but not what we were looking for. We gave Solera a rating of 4 (perhaps a touch under). We expect a bit more when the bill is $427.22 (plus tip).
