Looking for a new brunch location and stumbled across Astor Farm to Table. Was sat promptly but it took a long time for someone of the wait staff to come by the table. After about 10 minutes i got with the hostess as to a waiter. That is my only complaint. The owner came by and apologized, which was a nice touch. Rest of the time we there the waitstaff was on their game. I got the croissant eggs Benedict, I normally avoid the hollandaise but was glad that I got it. Overall it was a delicious dish, the roasted garlic potatoes were cooked perfectly. My wife got the chicken and waffle dish. She loved the dish, the waffle had a crunch in the batter that was a nice touch. The chicken, while wonderful seasoned, was a bit dry. My wife noticed the mimosas and loved eve one that she had. I enjoyed the coffee, it was a medium roast, with a smooth finish. Around noon a saxophonist started to play, nice ending to a great meal. We will be back again. read more

I have been to Astor twice so far. Once for brunch and once for lunch. I attended brunch on a Sunday with my wife. There is an outside patio and everyone was siting out there. No on inside. It was a beautiful day maybe a little windy but not enough to make a difference. We ordered several types of mimosas and all did not disappoint. I had steak and eggs with roasted potatoes with fruit and toast. My wife had the African Peri-Peri wings with belgian waffle, roasted potatoes fruit and syrup. All were very good. There is also a DJ on the patio on Sundays and it was lively. I attended again for lunch with a friend and this time I tried their African Oxtails with rice and plantains. They were falling off the bone tender. We ahd a small issue with the margaritas that we order but the owner (Casey) made them right. It was my second time meeting him as I also met him on Sunday. He makes a point to come out and meet his guest. He is a very outgoing guy and I think he will be successful her in this location. read more

This restaurant was an amazing find. It was interesting to have a Frank Sinatra style live singer at a South African restaurant, but I was totally digging it. The food was extremely flavorful and unique. The drinks were good, I had a whiskey sour and my friend had a mule. The service was excellent. The chef even visited our table and told us "welcome home". We had the South African sampler, oxtails, and shrimp with polenta. This restaurant sits on South Mason in a bustling strip, always busy with traffic. There's a large parking lot here, so parking is never an issue however. I recommend reservations, especially for weekends as it can get quite busy, and they have brunch here Friday-Sunday, which most places do not offer. The owner and chef, Casey, is very personable and always comes out to check on guests when we're there. For brunch on the patio there is a love DJ and it can get very fun (and loud) sometimes, so if that isn't your vibe beware. I've also sat inside for brunch though, and the outside noise was minimal. Now for the food...I've had their waffle breakfasts, and the shrimp and grits dish and all have been amazing. Their waffles are actually my husband's favorites. My favorite place to take friends to. People are a bit wary but end up being pleasantly delighted by the flavors and variety. Love the outdoor patio option for lovely days and when I am accompanied by my very well trained dogs. This is a hidden gem that many don't seem to know about, for now. The talented chef originally had a tiny café that occasionally we would not be able to get a seat to. He disappeared for year or two, apparently finding and setting up this location. We were excited to try Astor's Table but unfortunately walked away pretty disappointed. Our soup came out room temp and was a very small portion. Neither of our entree's came out hot. Our drinks took a long time and our desserts which should have been cold came out like warm and melted. Might I add the dessert's were served on plastic plates!! This entire experience cost us more money than our usual experience at Taste of Texas and was no where near comparable. The menu manages to be both varied-- plenty for vegans and super-meat-eaters alike-- but also focused and cohesive, with strong South African and Argentinan influences. BO fusion type deal waaay out Katy :) We had reservations but they weren't needed this Friday evening around 730. We were promptly seated on the patio. What stood out was our server, I'd say he spent the majority of our time there with us...talking. Which was cute and mmaaaaayyyybe a bit too much, but again, nice kid. His recs were honesty and pretty spot on. I got the luana fish which was tasty. I used all the chimichurri that came with it to enhance the flavor, without it I think it would have been tender, buttery but one-note. For app I got the Peli Peli shrimp- they were too small, but the flavor was fye! We had a large group so ppl ordered some of everything and overall we were pleased. I really appreciate places that take risks and give you something different and that is why I recommend visiting Astor, especially for brunch. * Southern African lamb curry - This was the best dish at our table! Everyone wanted a bite because the meat was very tender and flavorful! * Gluten free smoked salmon eggs benedict - This was the least favorited dish because of the cauli mash. Once the mash cooled down, it was less appetizing. However the person who tried it is not keto. Maybe someone who follows the keto diet would enjoy it. * Churrasco 8 oz - The steak temperature was medium accompanied with well seasoned fries and authentic chimichurri sauce. The 8 oz was fine for me because I had appetizers. If you do not have appetizers, then I would size up. * Peri peri wings and waffle - The wings tasted good, but not as spicy as expected. The waffle was soft, yet crunchy in the right places. * Pabellon - I would not recommend this dish. It was the most lackluster dish in taste and presentation. The plantains were harder and drier than my preference. * French toast - Our group's picky eater ate every bite of this fluffy French toast. * Astor Tri-Color Espetada - The presentation is exciting and the dish is good, but there was an overwhelming amount of onions (both on the skewer and salad). * Empanadas - There was a unanimous agreement that the chicken was better than the beef and sweet empanadas. The owner is hands-on and the staff contributed to our wonderful experience. I'd recommend exposing more of the staff to the menu so that they can make better recommendations, but the menu is very large and somewhat daunting. The atmosphere was easy, could wear shorts or dress up, it's casual elegant and fun. The waitstaff acted like we were the only table, always attentive, there at the instant. The food was delicious and we had apps, full meals and desserts. For me - some had some odd flavors, yet it was fun to try, and seemed really good if that's you style. I've lived in Katy for a year now and finally made it out to Sunday funday at Astor. Wow! The place was so fun with the live dj playing afrobeats, 90s and top hits. The food was excellent, we ordered a lot of items my faves were the stuffed mushrooms and duck wings. So much flavor in everything we didn't even need the sauces on the side. The chef did table touches which I thought made the experience even better to hear his origin story, he's humble and grateful. Overall presentation shows an impeccable attention to plating and details, my family will definitely be regulars here as the menu is extensive so there's lots of different items to try. read more

After reviewing places to see where I should go in the Katy area on a dinner date, I decided to come here after looking at the reviews and seeing it so highly rated. It did not meet expectations at all. This is purely a review of the dinner experience, I would think the brunch or other dining times are much better since thats what the reviews I saw are talking about. I always like to start off talking about the service. The initial service in general was a pleasent experience. I appreciated our server making sure we were taken care of in the beginning and we were all settled in. However, after we got our food, the service went from "great" to just plainly "too much". Let me preface by saying that the restaurant was basically empty except for 2 other tables, so i understand why they had so much time on their hands, but interrupting our conversation every 5-10 minutes does not create a very great experience. Now lets head to the food. We got the appetizer platter with a mix of south african and latin foods. This, we quite enjoyed. The empanadas looked and were delicious. The south african dried meat and sausage were good snacking foods to have during our time there. All in all though, there wasn't anything to write home out, the food was... basic and there were no flavours that really stood out. For the entree portion, we ordered the seafood platter which came with shrimp, prawns, mussels, calamari, bacon wrapped scallops, and zucchini with some rice. Let me start out by saying, why would anyone wrap such a soft peace of flesh like scallop in bacon. That is a disservice to the scallop. The scallops were very overcooked and chewy, and was not helped by the fact that the bacon was also chewy and salty. The shrimp was overcooked and also heavily salted for some reason. The prawns were by far the best thing on this plate, they were juicy and had a lot of flavor but even these were too salty. The calamari was ok but looked way too much like onion rings, and the mussels were good. The rice was the south african yellow rice with raisins. Rice was way too dry and a tad too sweet, and funnily enough, did not have enough salt on it. Lastly, we were excited for the dessert as we are both sweet tooths and decided to get the creme brule. Imagine my surprise when the bowl we got was a round bottom glass bowl... The brulee was done nice, had a nice crack to it when we went in, but then came out overcooked creme. The texture was more of a cake and was definetly overcooked. It was sugar so all in all still tasted ok but if you were looking for nice creme brulee, this is not it. We also got some tea with the dessert and even that was some basic grocery store tea. I mean at least try to give us tea from latin america or south africa. I might just be what we got on the menu that gave such a bad expereince. Maybe if you get the braised goat or oxtail or even the steaks it would be better. But, in my opinion a restaurant should serve everything with quality so making one or two things really good cant cut it. I personally cannot recommend this place for dinner. read more

I be never used the term oxymoron in any review but that's the first word that came to mind when I started to write about this place. We called ahead and were told they were dog friendly. We took our seats on the patio and were greeted quickly by an employee who greeted our dogs enthusiastically. Because of the wind they put tablecloths on the table once we were seated and as a nice touch the silverware was wrapped in real napkins. The name of the restaurant doesn't reflect the menu at all. There were lots of choices mostly Latin American and South African foods, since I know very little about those cuisines I cannot comment on the authenticity. Our server brought our drinks and took our order. We ordered fish and chips that came with a fresh salad and a chicken empanada. The empanada was very dry but had a good flavor. The fish and chips were different then we are used to but not greasy and the fries had a good flavor. I don't believe they were made from scratch though as you might believe from a name like farm to table. Although our server never checked back about the food he did return to remove our plates. I excused myself to the restroom and as I walked through the restaurant I noticed all the tables were covered with tablecloths and set with silverware and wine glasses very classy looking. The restroom was clean and had a scented candle burning but unfortunately zero toilet paper! I let our server know on my way back to the patio. To my surprise although he'd completely cleared the table the server hadn't brought the check. Two things to note here, there easy access to the parking lot so we could have walked out and there was only one customer in the restaurant as it was mid afternoon. I went back in asked for our check our server was just standing there not doing anything. I wanted to pay cash but was told no because the owner wasn't there, what? It's a good thing I had a credit card. The icing on the cake was the bill. My two double Tito's were $44.00. Talk about sticker shock at $11 a drink. I have never paid that much for a simple cocktail in my entire life. This restaurant gets a lot of good reviews and I usually don't give bad reviews because I try to boost a business but that was the final straw. read more

After a much needed massage, we stumbled upon this place and what a pleasant surprise it was! The ambiance was welcoming, the employees were super nice, and the music was poppin! I honestly wasn't expecting what I saw when I walked in, especially being that this was the old Pei Wei. I told my husband, "what an awesome little gem in Katy". The empanadas were so delicious. I should have ordered 6 more. I was recently introduced to Bobotie last year from a different restaurant and it was so good, this was even better. However, I was quite shocked by the portion size. Let's be real, the greenery on the plate is nice, but I'm here for the star of the plate & it was quite small. I stood and looked at it for a few seconds before I devoured it. I'm thinking the small size HAS to be because this was ALL they had left and I stumbled in quite close to closing. I hope this is the case, because I would love to order this again, but cannot justify paying $11 for such a small amount. It was a little smaller than an Oreo. This is why I took a star off. The first visit was so wonderful I had to try it again. This time a waiter greeted us as we entered the restaurant and seated us at our desired table. Our waitress/ server came over immediately and brought us menus and took our drink orders,she was very pleasant and friendly with a smile. I ordered the same dish since it was so delicious and fulfilling the last time we were here and my wife ordered the avocado toast. My wife passed on the option to add the smoked salmon because the waitress didn't know how to discrribe exactly what it was and offered to tell us that it was a raw fish and that several customers were shocked and complained after receiving it. I then asked if I could see a small sample in order to make a decision about whether or not to get it but she said that she couldn't because of the way that the kitchen prepared it. What? A few minutes later the chef came to the table to explain to us what smoked salmon was obviously being unaware that the waitress totally butchered the discription and misrepresented the the dish in a manner that would discourage anyone from ordering it. I proceeded to orderer the chef's platter, which is the name for the vegan plate that's on the menu, the waitress said that she didn't know what that was and asked me to show her the menu. At this point it was apparent she needed training and should not have been left on her own. The restaurant was not even busy when we arrived at 12:22 pm and our food arrived at 1:01pm. It took forty minutes for us to get our lunch. The place has a nice atmosphere and concept, but the menu has entirely too many items on it for lunch. If the menu was simpler and offered the food items that makes them stand out from the rest with maybe one or two specials they would probably be a lot busier. Lastly the food was very different from my first visit. It wasn't as good and the presentation and preparation were completely different. Veges tasted old and rancid, overcooked mushy and covered with too much spice (Italian seasoning). The rice was microwaved too much, hard and tasteless. Quinoa was bland and not as much on the plate like I had the first time, also microwaved. With more employees than customers and the amount of time it took them to prepare our food it could have and IMO, should have been cooked to order. After all how long does it take to cook vegetables and toast? The photos doesn't show the mushy vegetables that were hidden underneath the few good pieces of aldente vegetables. Also I think this dish is overpriced for vegetables and rice especially if it's nothing different from what you can probably make as good at home or better. I will return because I believe that they have potential should they make the necessary adjustments. We shall see! read more

We went here in a Friday night, plenty of seating even until 7:30pm. We ordered the Argentina and Venezuela sampler, Argentinian meat lover plate (lots of delicious meat - sausage, skirt steak, plantains), New Astor flames braai, and the South African trio of desserts. All were delicious and served appropriately. You can eat indoors or on their open or enclosed patio (if raining).
