Delicious food but slow service. I came here on Christmas Eve and was welcomed by spirited staff and decor. Our server was very sweet. I tried the cream cheese grits - DELICIOUS! Wow every bite was so creamy and rich, I loved it. I do wish that they had more vegetarian options on their brunch menu - I know for several items I could have just asked for no meat but when you do that they make you pay the same price which seems unfair. But I am happy with the grits. Also celebrated my friends birthday there. A loud celebration with free dessert! We got to try the seis leche cake which was so yummy. There were some parts of the cake that were dry, so soaking the cake more throughly would have made it splendid. Overall great place, just kind of pricey :/ read more

Upon arrival, we were told--very seriously--that no changes or substitutions could be made because the kitchen had pre-prepped everything for the holiday. This was delivered with the gravity of someone announcing a royal decree. We nodded solemnly. We understood. We were not here to make waves. We were here for brunch. What followed was a 55-minute wait for an eggs Benedict that could best be described as... conceptual. It arrived lukewarm and looking slightly startled, as if it had not expected to be chosen. Curious, and still slightly hungry, we asked the waiter where they sourced their ingredients, given the farm-to-table branding. He answered--without irony--that they get most of their food from Gordon's Restaurant Supply down the street. A touching local connection, if you consider strip mall bulk distribution a form of agriculture. In the end, the only thing truly farm-to-table was the check. Want to give 3.5 stars but rounded up. This is a small, charmingly decorated restaurant in Katy, popular for birthdays and family celebrations. We came on a Friday night and the place was packed at 7pm (be sure to make a reservation). The menu is large with Latin and African dishes; we had a variety of samplers and all sorts of dishes from steak to fish to fufu to pasta. The food was 10/10 and so were the drinks. The chef came out a couple times to make sure everything was in order. This was all great from the food perspective. However, the service could be improved during dinner rush. Our table never received any menus and ended up looking at the menus on our phones. Our water glasses should have been refilled more often than they were. The waitstaff (not specifically our server but others who attended our table such as the bus girl) had difficulty understanding me multiple times (possibly because it was so loud). At one point I felt I needed to start speaking Spanish to be understood. There were a number of bus boys standing around doing nothing when they could have been helping refill waters. There was a live saxophonist playing great music. We would have tipped him but had no cash ‍ perhaps he could have a venmo QR code for cashless tips. read more

I've been dying to try this place, and I finally had an opportunity. I went with a large group, so we were seated in a private separate room from the main dining area. This room had beautiful African art and artifacts, a wine wall, and exquisitely decorated tables. The main dining area had individual tables spread throughout the area and live entertainment, a sax player that night, who played while walking back and forth along the front of the restaurant. The place isn't huge, but it has somewhat of a cozy, causal feel. The service was a little slow, but that's to be expected with a larger group. The food and drinks were good. The food was not overly seasoned but had just enough season to bring out the natural flavors. Personally, just a pinch more salt would have made it better. I also ordered a cauliflower mash but got mashed potatos, the waitress swore it was cauliflower but never even attempted to look to see if it my order was wrong. Come on now, I know the taste difference between the two. Drinks were good, and they had an enormous wine selection. Some of the food pictured are from others at my table. Everyone stated it was either very good or just ok. My conclusion is that maybe it just depends on what you order. Will I go back? For sure! I'd love to try their brunch next. read more

Our first time eating here. We probably won't be back. Unfortunately, my seafood pasta wasn't very fresh. One of my mussels was closed. It tastes more like gumbo/fish stew than a seafood pasta dish. My husband had the ribeye, which he said had a nice marinade flavor. Our ceviche was not great. The menu said it was $18, but we were charged $25 for a ceviche that has only one shrimp on top. The fish was minced so tiny. We didn't like all the extra charges that weren't told to us in advance. We were charged before ever looking at a receipt. When we asked for the receipt after paying for everything, it came with a complementary dessert, which so happens to cover the overcharge. This place has a lot of potential, but unfortunately, we won't be back because we felt cheated. It was a bit pricey for what we ordered. Second review. The chef and owner reached out to me and refunded my overcharges and my dish. It has a good flavor, but one of the seafood was bad and ruined the dish. I would give this place another try. After following them for a couple years finally got time to go. I am a simple food eater. The staff is wonderful and professional! But I find the chairs uncomfortable and tables too close. I could hear neighbors conversation all around. The food for me and my family was not to our liking. Oxtail and rice, rice had a smell ( not sure what kind of rice). Oxtail is tender, I just did not like the flavor. Plantain burger was a mess! My daughter only ate the meat and left everything else. Fries had a lot of seasoning or something on it. This restaurant is "off the chain"!!!! It came very highly recommended to my Neice who lives here in H-Town so my family and I decided to try it today and we were not disappointe!!! We arrived and were surprised to be greeted and seated by none other than the Owner himself. His words to us was "Welcome Home", and from that point on we felt right at home from the time we arrived until we left. The Service was nothing short of Excellent!! Amazing first experience at Astor Farm To Table. Tried Houston Restaurant Week with my good friend and we had a blast. Parking is not a problem as it is located in a shopping and restaurant center with easy access to a CVS nearby. The ambience inside was so cozy and inviting. Didn't know it was a South African restaurant. We didn't have a reservation but we were seated promptly. They also have us a bag handle. For my meal, I ordered from the Houston Restaurant Week Menu - got mussels for appetizer, chilean bass for my entree and peppermint mousse for dessert! I ordered a skinny margarita and still water. The food was amazing and to top it all there was live music so it made the experience even better. The servers really take care of you and really made sure your experience is 100 percent! Here's my review: The food and appetizers were delicious. Everything was so flavorful and it was filling. The portion was perfect! You literally need to eat slow and just make sure you leave room for your actual entree! The food presentation was nice and authentic. The environment was comfy with a twist of elegance. The fact that our server brought us used butter for the bread let me know how our Thanksgiving experience was about to go. We reserved a table for Thanksgiving since we didn't want to travel into the city and figured it'd be nice to try a local business. We were optimistic when we sat down due to the ambiance but as soon as we got our food, things took a turn for the worst. All plates came out slightly lukewarm. My family was 3 out of the 7 people in the restaurant and all plates shown in the photos were not at the temp where one would enjoy eating. We informed our server and chef and they took all the plates back. When the 2nd round of food came to the table, it was the same thing. My wife had a lengthy conversation with the chef about the prime rib and how done it was going to be if it was served hot. This was the biggest red flag. Fresh food should be served hot no matter if it's medium well, medium or well done. It was disappointing to pay $207 for 3 people (dinner and 2 drinks) for a Thanksgiving meal to have had the issues we did. We even spoke with a manager to inform them of the issues we had and nothing was done to make the situation right. We had reasonable expectations of this restaurant prior to dining there and really thought the dining experience would be different seeing how other patrons received hugs and greetings from the staff while we dined there. Unfortunately, this wasn't our experience. We were interested in trying out their regular menu, but we'll pass. $207 for what we got, that's crazy. Never again read more

To be honest there is so much to choose from between South African, Argentinian and Venezuelan plus breakfast and lunch menus it becomes difficult to choose. Three of us had breakfast choices and they were average at best and above average prices, I would remove the biscuits and gravy as it was a very poor breakfast I think there are simply too many items on the menu and the breakfasts were lackluster. A wonderful experience! Came yesterday to celebrate my 21st birthday, so many interesting and unique flavors we'd never tried before. Friendly staff, welcoming vibes and a beautiful patio too. Amazing!! Want something delicious and maybe new to some? This is the perfect place for a great brunch, lunch, or dinner. The dishes are fantastic and you can't help but want more. Each dish was prepared in a traditional manner with flare, which of course translates - This is Great! Each dish has an Argentinian or South African or a fusion of the two in an American familiarity. Visited Astor Farm to Table for Houston Restaurant week and I'm so glad that we stepped out of comfort zone from the usual Steakhouse. Astor is perfect for Date night. Chef Casey was amazing. The Duck wings are a stand out and phenomenally done. The music is nice and there is plethora of house wines and a wine tasting room. Check the weekly menu for specials like Tomahawk Thursday and date night Wednesday. I enjoyed a Ribeye with shrimp and my husband had the picanha Espada. The calamari was not our favorite but everything else from the service to the ambiance was 5 stars. Chef Casey came out to greet us personally and made us feel like family. To finish our meal we had the SEIS LECHES and you will want to save room for this heavenly dessert. This unassuming restaurant with an incredible wine list, serves food from South African, and indeed food from all of the country of Africa, with South American food with an ease and grace that exudes the owner and head chef. Sauce served with the beef one was 99% oil, not sure if it was supposed to be chimichurri sauce or what, but had no flavor other than oil & was clear. Appetizers came out quickly, then entrees took a long wait after we finished eating appetizers. My husband had the wagyu burger which he liked. I had the smoked salmon salad, which was a total miss. Very disappointing, mixed spring greens (although the menu said a bed of romaine) with nothing else but feta cheese and literally packaged small slices of smoked salmon. I really thought for $25/person the salmon would be a smoked salmon fillet. Not at all the quality I would consider fine dining. read more

This review only reflects the brunch experience. Tried the oysters, french toast, eggs benedict, and beef filet medallions Nice ambiance and interesting food that gave me Peli Peli vibes when it came to the brunch menu. The restaurant does have a unique concept of combining venezuelan and African cuisine. However, the price to taste ratio for brunch was not to par. The benedict was very underwhelming, tasted like a store bought hollandaise sauce squirted onto store bought English muffins. The beef fillet display is a cool gimmick and the beef was tender. Overall coming out of an $80 brunch, it was a fairly average tasting experience compared to a more casual brunch experience like Snooze that would be half the cost. I think Astor has some unique offerings and is worth trying at least once... Maybe skip the brunch Would I Recommend to Try? Yes Would I Return? My wife and I went to Astor for the first time to try their Valentine's Day menu, and we were totally let down. First off, the menu was super hard to read. We had to tilt it just right or use our phone flashlights to see it. Next, the drink options were confusing. We thought drinks were included, but nope, they weren't. The waitress, who was nice but only there for the event, couldn't really explain the options or recommend a wine. So, we ended up getting a cocktail from the limited Valentine's menu and a bottle of wine because we were confused. Now for the food: the lobster soup tasted good, but it was barely warm and the portion was tiny. I ordered the steak medium, and my wife got the bass with extra shrimp. My steak looked like a small, thin skirt steak, and I couldn't even tell if it was medium. It came on a bed of soggy asparagus that I could easily stick a fork through--no snap at all. I was so disappointed I barely ate any of it. My wife's bass was good for the first couple of bites, but it didn't taste fresh after that. It seemed like they reheated it and drowned it in butter. The extra shrimp looked overcooked and tasted mushy, just like the veggies that came with it. Nothing felt fresh and everything was overcooked. We were so disappointed that we only took a few bites and skipped dessert, which was included. When we brought this up with the manager, she was clearly upset. She mentioned having to pay her chefs and only offered us a "VIP" discount of 20%, which wasn't good enough for us considering the expectation based on the reviews we'd seen. We felt a solution would be to pay for one meal and our drinks however, after some back and forth, she eventually stated that we need only pay for our drinks. We didn't ask for complete removal but agreed to her hasty resolution however, when she brought the bill, it also included an extra bottle of wine. She did remove it after we pointed it out, but that was the final straw for us. Sad to say, this will be our only visit to Astor. So disappointing. read more

I decided to try and support another new business in Katy. When you first walk in the ambience is very nice. This is a South African restaurant, so you know the place was decorated in wine. Our server was very nice, and he was very knowledgeable about the wines. We ordered a unique SA wine that was very good. In fact, the wine was the only good thing we ordered that night. My dates oxtails were served cold and unflavored. My guest did not want to send it back and stated he will just not return to this establishment. My red snapper did not look like the red snappers I have become accustomed to especially not for $45. I got two small bland semi-fried pieces of unflavored fish. The food here is not well cooked and lacks flavor. I suggest this restaurant revamp and maybe consider being a wine bar. The ambience gives class but the food does not deliver.
