      Oxtail tacos

      We went for HRW with a reservation. It was packed so we were excited. There was a saxophonist and he was great, not too loud. The food just took way too long to come out. Our waitress was super sweet but you could tell they were either understaffed or not used to being that full. It took super long time for all of our food to come out. Appetizers came over 40 minutes after ordering and the mains came over an hour and 15 mins or so after we arrived, and that was with the mains being ordered halfway through the apps. The first bite of the oyster was ok. It didn't taste like it was just made but maybe pre-prepped perhaps. We were supposed to receive bread soon after the first bite but we didn't. It was difficult to flag someone down because the waitstaff was moving fast and bringing out food for all the tables. We received our appetizers and then I had to let them know that we didn't get bread. So our bread and appetizers were eaten together. Now onto the food. We ordered the shrimp, jollof ball, calamari, and tacos. The calamari was straight up not good. We didn't finish it and no one in our party thought it tasted fresh. It had a very odd texture. It wasn't chewy or have a bite like normal calamari does but it was like a sponge. We all took one piece. Our party is all about not wasting food but the fact that the appetizer was not finished was very telling. The shrimp had good flavor but wasn't spectacular. The tacos were good. The jollof ball was spicy and nice. Between the appetizer and the entree there was over 35 minute gap. For this reason, we asked if we could have more bread, but they said they charged for extra bread. Tbh, I don't mind if places charge little for bread service, but if it takes over 35 minutes for the entree to come out, I'd expect the restaurant to give another piece of bread per person for no fee. That's just good customer service but alas we declined the bread. For the mains we ordered the brai (10) up charge, the lamb chops, the ribeye, and pork chop. The ribeye was great, cooked well, juicy and with good flavor. Lamb chops were also nice. The pork had an interesting flavor that my party member wasn't fond of, but it was cooked nicely and was reasonably juicy. The big miss was the brai. It had a 10 dollar upcharge for 1 row of lateral axis short rib, 1 lamb chops, and 1 sausage. The short rib was fine but a crap ton of fat. The lamb chop was good, the sausage was raw in the middle. When I brought it up to someone that the sausage was raw, they took the same sausage and cooked it until it was done. Keep in mind the restaurant is dark and my other companions had some of the sausage but the outer pieces. I had a piece in my mouth and had to spit it out because I could feel the raw meat sausage texture in my mouth. Instead of bringing me a new sausage they took the same one, which to me is outrageous especially because I had spit out a good piece. The waitress apologized but I had to ask to speak to the manager instead of someone coming to our table first. When they brought the same sausage out, it rolled off the plate onto the table....i just accepted it. They took off the 10 dollar up charge off the bill but I don't think that was enough especially with the whole debacle of the sausage being raw. I expected the restaurant to have a solution but I was put on the spot about what they needed to do. I wished I'd asked for the 1 meal to be half off or more than 10 dollars off just because of everything and the food quality and the terrible wait times. The mashed potatoes also weren't great. Green beans were good, jollof rice side was good. Desserts were fine. All in all, we expected better quality of food and service.

      Stopped in for restaurant week brunch/lunch menu. We were greeted and seated upon entry. Our waitress brought waters and gave us time to look over the menu. I love the decor but it was really cold inside. We ordered: Apps: Tomato Bisque & Empanadas Entrees: Turkey leg w/pasta & Fried Chicken & waffles My husband like the Turkey leg, he said it was very flavorful. He substituted pasta instead of rice. I was surprised at the chicken breast w/ waffle vs wings. But I thought the waffle was simply too sweet for my palate. There were too many sugar pearls and it was a bit dense for my liking. They actually have more options that I would like to try on there dinner options, so I plan to give them another shot. Enter freely and tell a friend, then let me know what I should order for dinner.

      We came here to try the HRW menu. Upon entering we were seated and the waitress introduced herself. I believe her name was Sandy. Sandy was welcoming and did a great job throughout. To address the 4 star, part of the knock on the star comes from little things throughout the night. First, we waited quite a bit to be served. To no fault of our waitress it looked like she had been pulled to handle other things. The hostess ended up taking our order for sandy and then she took it from there. Also, another waitress Jada stepped in as well to help and made sure we were good. This was very nice of them. Again, our waitress was not a problem, but logistically if she had tables you could see her physically having to handle other things so its not like she just went missing. The restaurant has a great vibe. There was a pianist playing and the lights were intimately low. The chef also came over and introduced himself which is pretty cool. On to the food: The oyster Rockefeller first course was delicious. Creamy, spinach, oyster with a bit of a zing from the sauce Next we had the heritage tasting plate and the oxtail tacos. The oxtail tacos had a bit too much lettuce for my liking but my fiancee enjoyed it. Savory, hers didnt have as much lettuce as mine, so if youre not a lettuce fan you could he rolling the dice here. The heritage tasting plate was good. Camel, kangaroo, and rabbit. I loved the kangaroo a ton. Who knew? The camel was very good too it had a ground turkey type if texture. The kangaroo tasted like stewed beef roast. Very good. Finally, the rabbit, as I've had this before, was good rabbit. Its like a chicken ish flavor to it. For the next course we had the lamb chops and suya ribeye. The lamb chops were flavorful and the green beans on both dishes were good and tender. The suya ribeye had good suya flavor. We barely touched the mashed potatoes and jollof because we were so full. The bite of jollof that I did have was traditional flavored jollof. Pretty good. We got the peri peri shrimp with the lamb chops and they were ok, but not anything to write home about. We were expecting that peri peri burst of flavor like the lamb chops had. To finish off the meal we both got the creme brulee. Id say this missed a bit. The brulee didnt have your traditional hard top of bruleed sugar. The sugary portion tasted a bit burnt. Not the traditional brulee burnt but a stronger burnt sugar flavor. All in all a great experience and we would go back and do this again.

      I have to say, this place is incredibly welcoming. The Sunday ambiance was perfect, with live music creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The service was exceptional from start to finish, and the chef went out of his way to make us feel right at home. Of course, the pièce de résistance was the beautifully prepared, delicious food. We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back--with more friends and family next time!

      I Came on a whim and was able to experience Restaurant week . The food, the vibe, the staff, and Chef Casey were absolutely amazing and welcoming. I had the ox tail tacos, oxtail empanadas, and ribeye. Delicious. It's cozy and very much a feel of "home," from the welcoming spirit and love put into the food. Chef Casey was very personable. He walked around and talked to everyone in the restaurant. Definitely a Katy gem and worth a try!

      Cons: dont know why it took so long to bring out a small ladle of soup and a mimosas. Every mimosas is a penny after the first but it takes so long to come out. Was told that it was ready in the back....well can I get it to the table instead. Lobster bisque had nothing resembling lobster; taste like tomato soup. So hard to say these things because everyone was so sweet and welcoming but the service was very slow considering there were only 5 tables and four waitresses. Pros: the empandas were top tier; chefs kiss. Waffles are worth a try. Chef was out mingling and talking to everyone. Lovely business with great friendly staff. Gonna try the dinner menu bc the dishes we had seemed to be worth a second chance and were presented well. 3.6 rating

      I have been here before for brunch and not sure why I never posted a review...therefore Houston resturant week was prime time to try it again! I made reservations same day. I showed up, parked, was greeted and sat immediately. It was a nice intimate atmosphere. They had the young man playing the piano for a vibe. It was a little dark which made it a little hard to see. It was really busy due to resturant week so we knew patience would be necessary. We did sit about 10-15 minutes before we were helped but understood. Then Jayda came over and took care of us. She gave recommendations and knew her stuff. I had the shrimp that were good and the steak and potatoes were good. I tasted the fried fish and it was awesome. I also liked the bread and sauce that came to the table. The lemon drop was pretty strong too. I enjoyed it. I would like to try it again when not so busy. The chef came over and checked on us and I loved his energy!

      Came here for lunch with a friend Sunday afternoon Absolutely no one there Our waitress was super attentive a little too much for my liking but she was cool lol She made us a special drink I wasn't a fan because it was very syrupy but she said all the pineapple juice was gone due to the penny mimosa they have at brunch which seems to be very popular here The food was good ! Flavorful a little different for me but delicious . I appreciate the bread that comes And they gave us a free dessert for it being my first time Cherry on top the chef came to say hi!

      First of all... Wow wow wow!! This is some of the BEST FOOD in Houston, Chef Casey knows what he is doing for real!!! Him and everyone really treat you well and make you feel like family, a true no judgement zone. My boyfriend and I went for restaurant week to try a little bit of everything and nothing was underwhelming at all. All the servers, bartenders, and chef Casey helped us decide what to get and provided so much knowledge and advice on our decision. Truly a culinary extravaganza, and would go back in a heartbeat. There weren't only African people there, but a mix of different people groups, which tells you everything. The restaurant was very casual, moody, friendly and relaxed! 10/10. 5 stars. Gold Star.       Whole baked snapper with salad and plantains

      We were so excited to try Astor's Table for HRW but left there so disappointed. We realized that because of HRW there may be some food delays, so we made a 4:30 reservation. This was a good choice as the restaurant began filling up a little after 5pm. We received the oyster as our 1st bite, but it was lukewarm with cold cheese. The bread was tasty but when I went to lift the plastic butter cup, the butter oozed out into the basket. It was upside down and I guess I was wrong for assuming there would be a lid on it. For the 1st course we ordered the oxtail street tacos and the spicy chicken empanadas. The empanadas came out hot, fresh, and delicious. We were given one chicken and one beef accidentally, but it was a delicious mistake. The oxtail tacos were just okay, definitely not how I envisioned a street taco due to the size. For the next course we chose to upgrade from the HRW menu and ordered the whole baked snapper. Now we also chose the oxtail ravioli and upgraded to get jollof rice and plantains. The thought was we would get ravioli and then a side of jollof and plantains. I never had jollof so figured it would be a great way to try it. However, when my meal came out I had no idea what was in front of me. The server came back and I explained that I ordered the ravioli. She quickly advised that the upgrade meant I would get oxtails with the jollof and plantains and then left the table. She didn't apologize for not telling me this when I ordered (this is not how it was listed on the menu) nor did she offer to change out my meal. She just left. We eat with our eyes and that pile of oxtails DID NOT look appetizing! I have seen other pics of the oxtails here and they look delicious, mine on the other hand looked like a pile of dark mush. There were a few small actual whole tails, but at first sight I would have never thought there were oxtails on my plate. The plantains were delicious and the rice had a great consistency though. The snapper didn't taste seasoned at all, so that was also disappointing. For dessert we had what was called key lime cake and bananas foster. It was not cake, it was a slice of key lime pie...very basic, no whipped cream or anything to make it look nice. The flavor was mediocre. The bananas foster had small chunks of banana that were barely noticeable. Again, no thought on presentation. We were so excited to try Astor's Table but sadly it was a let down for us.

      I visited Astor's Table with some coworkers. Everything was amazing! It was such a great experience. We were greeted by a friendly waiter who held the door and welcomed us "home". We were seated and given a tour of the menu and some suggested options to try. Once the order was placed and the appetizers arrived, the chef came out, introduced himself and spoke to us what we liked best and answered questions about each item. He also came out after the mains were served to make sure everything was being enjoyed. We ordered a few sampler platters for appetizers, as well as oxtail, antelope and ostrich for the mains as we wanted to get a taste of everything. There was nothing that didn't taste amazing! This was the first time we tried camel, kangaroo, antelope and ostrich. We were surprised at how flavorful each of them and the other items were. The adventure was topped off with a slice of the most amazing key lime pie, courtesy of the chef. We will definitely be returning!

      I will always support Chef Casey because his food is amazing! He puts so much thought and flavor into every item on the menu. EveryTime I go back he adds another dish I love to the menu. I'm trying to go for dinner but we are obsessed with the brunch menu.

      Fish & grits / Creamy Grits with Oxtails

      Love the feel of the restaurant. It has a welcoming "small dining" or "family cafe" feel. The decor and feng shui of the restaurant is fitting for dining for families, just the friends or date day. The food is delicious! It says farm to table in the name and you can tell that it's fresh. There is a wait for the food but it's because they cook to order. This is not a place where you come to get your food fast. Waiting comes with great and fresh food. I had the oxtail breakfast and my husband had the fish and grits breakfast. Because we don't eat pork, we don't have the grits because they use bacon drippings in their grits. The menu has something for everyone: pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan and meat eaters. Today's service was a little slow with drink refills and condiments we needed but the server did tell us they were not only cooking for the restaurant but also a big event that was being catered off the premises. They also have a space that seems like it can be reserved for private or large party dining. I definitely will be back!!

Overall, it really wasn't worth the long drive for us.

The chimichurri had a kick to it from time to time, but I still ate it because it was really good with the slight sourness I like! The guacamole chicharron was so crispy and flavorful! I would come back just for that. We also ordered from the restaurant week menu. I got the Flora di Zucca which is zucchini blossoms. I genuinely thought it would be pieces of zucchini cut into shapes of flowers, but it was the actual flower! It was yummy! When I seemed confused, they let me try their regular zucchini too! I got the soup of the day which was a creamy mushroom soup and upgraded the sirloin to the filet. Both were worth getting. The filet was a little more cooked than I liked, but still pink in the middle, seasoned well, and tender. Their mashed potatoes honestly might be the best I've ever had at a restaurant. They gave me a sauce to go with the meal that they couldn't exactly describe. I can't exactly describe either. It was good though. I feel like it was similar to stroganoff gravy, savory and sour and a hint of something else. I upgraded one of the sides to the strawberry mozzarella salad, but I did not care for the vinaigrette that came with it. The pistachio cake was not what I was expecting. It was ok, but didn't really taste like pistachio aside from the pistachio crumble on top and was slightly dry. For just the chicharron and the mashed potatoes, I'd come here again. But pretty much everything we ate was solid and worth trying.
