Picked this place after looking at the reviews for best chicken fried steak. At first look when it arrived, the steak was huge. However, not only was it the most tasteless, but the actual meat inside it was like paper thin. Added note, the mashed potatoes were cold. Maybe because I had the gravy on the side. I contemplated giving a review, but it was a long drive for us to get here. Today they are busy, it's Mother's Day. Service is good. Ambiance is great. Food is good. My grandson ordered catfish also. Just before we left my daughter asked for peach pie to go. It looks delicious. They did bring a slice of apple pie as it was Mother's Day. We three on it till it was gone. It was very good better than any I've eaten in a lot of places. It was even warm. The waitress was kind and checked on us several times. We mentioned no tartar sauce for the fish and she says oh my goodness and rushed back and brought it right to us. Why it wasn't put on the plate to start with. We have no idea, but it doesn't matter. It is a country Texas place. It's been there for years and we go there every once in a while. Prices are very reasonable, and we love the ambience of the place with the car tags from all over, their cap now in the ceiling, some of the hats around the room and posters. My grandson remembers it with more hats and car tags. I don't really remember the hats, but I enjoy looking at the car tags and see where they're from. It's a great place to visit. Don't expect it to be one of these top hat, places, jeans and a T-shirt or jeans skirt and shirt are just fine cowboy boots or tennis shoes even flip-flops if you have a western hat that you usually wear or you can wear it in or a baseball cap. I'd have to say it's cozy, but I don't know about intimate. It's an enjoyable place where groups can go or just a couple or even a single person. I have not been to the bathroom in several years but quite a number of years back, they were small, which didn't really matter to me as I'm not big anyway. We always enjoy going there. My favorite dishes are prime rib, catfish and chicken fried chicken all of which are very good and will not break the bank. I didn't put much in because it was so much noise there at the restaurant but then again it's Mother's Day so it was busy. I considered average although I read other reviews that thought it was too noisy but then I wonder if they've really been to Texas establishment. I've lived in Oklahoma, and most of the places are noisy. I've lived in Arkansas, the same and even in Missouri. Likewise in California and even here in Phoenix. Restaurants are where people order the food and sit and talk and visit. I expect the noise unless I'm going to a really expensive place and I do expect it to be a bit quieter because the clientele will normally be different. Food was delicious. Our server Ashlie was such a pleasant surprise! I am not quick to jump at the opportunity to go out for a meal these days. It seems like ever since COVID the expectation of good service has disappeared and the quality of food is lacking everywhere you go. The only thing consistent is the price increases we continue to see. Tonight was great service with a "I'm happy to help you" great attitude. It was called "The Dust Bowl". It shredded the US economy, upending the lives of many. Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" is a microtome slice of those millions of stories. Why do I tell you this? Because three of my grand-uncles stayed put, toughing it out in the Panhandle. My grandmother grew up cooking for them and a host of farm snd ranch hands. Sundays in Los Angeles our family sat diwn to fried chucken, real msshed potsties with chicken gravy and any number of sides. TexAZ is that for me. I enjoy the food immensely and nostalgically. I tell you this was the draw of the straws when we got to Arizona to find some place to eat. It just so happens that this kind of fit the bill for what we were looking for. We wanted some place that was casual, that had drinks, and had barbecue. We were more than pleasantly surprised, the menu was terrific the food was huge, and I mean huge it came on platters. Our waitress was more than friendly and helpful when it comes to choosing our dishes. And trust me she makes one heck of a cocktail. It was just what I needed after a Long Day's flight I wish I could have spent the whole evening there. Very disappointing. They did not everything on the menu. No longer have beef ribs. The worst hamburger I've ever had. They did comp the burger because I only ate half. We have gone here a few times. The menu descriptions do not match the items (beef kabobs) causing exposure to allergens. The waitresses are snotty with condescending attitudes. The salad is iceberg lettuce and tomatoes?! Side choices are limited as are drinks. It is basically a place to get a fried food fix (if you want entrees drenched in oil)- and the skin/coating peels off to reveal undercooked meat The lighting is low (probably to hide the poor quality of food) and the music is loud depriving the waitresses to be able to communicate effectively (if they can) The food and service are definitely declining which is too bad as you really want this place to be good. read more

5/3/25: Short version - the food was okay, the decor very western, the service was the best part of the experience. Long version - if you have been to the Tortilla Flats Saloon, you'll have a good idea of Texaz's interior. Instead of being covered in dollar bills, however, Texaz was covered in biz cards, paper armadillos, and license plates (the oldest I saw was '73). Of course they have a John Wayne poster, along with busts of boars, deer, steer, and pheasant, to name a few. Our server, Cherie, was on the ball. Taking our drink order quickly, bringing refills without us having to ask, returning to ask how everything was. The food? Well, we were both rather disappointed. I ordered their chicken & dumplings special, my sister the tipsy Texan, plus an appetizer of the fried okra. The okra was good; the corn that came w/ the dumplings was totally canned corn, and I suspect the gravy was simply canned soup w/ some spices tossed in. My sister said her burger flavor was good, but she would have preferred fries to the bag of Fritos (don't know if that was an option, or an upcharge). We both ate half-heartedly, wondering if their dinner entrees would have been the better route to go. But then, if they serve canned corn for lunch, it's highly unlikely the dinner would have been better. A couple things to beware about: 1) Parking. There is a semi-sizeable lot tucked away behind the complex, but its entrance does not accommodate more than one vehicle; it's a pretty tight driveway. If you're trying to exit while someone is trying to enter, be prepared to back up & let them enter first. You can't expect them to back out since they would be backing out smack onto Bethany Home Road. Other than that, there is one lane of parking on the south side of the restaurant (behemoth trucks beware). There is two aisles of parking on the west side, but again, if you have multiple large vehicles, it could be a pretty tight fit. 2) Restrooms. I can't speak of the john, but the ladies' restroom is claustrophobic. There are two stalls, but it's so small that I stayed outside while one lady was washing her hands. Trying to maneuver around her to reach a stall would have been tight. If you are a large woman, which my sister is, unless you have to go badly, I would hold it. When I returned to the table, I immediately told my sister she would be extremely uncomfortable trying to use the facility. All in all, Texaz is not worth a revisit. Yelp!'s two-star rating is dubbed "could've been better". I give Texaz three stars for "okay" because I don't relish giving lower reviews, but it definitely could have been better. read more

I have been eating here for decades. This is my pick for a birthday meal almost every time. Went last night and was completely disappointed. All the sides were good. The service was good. It's the and dirty hole in the wall. Dirty little bathrooms. I already know that though. The disappointment was in what they used to do best. The chicken fried steak. The meat in our meals was both burn and un chewable but also think and under cooked at the same time. The batter was thick, mushy and gross. This restaurant was smaller than expected but we loved the Texas license plate and memorabilia that covers the walls. Our server, Abby, was efficient, friendly, and had a sense of humor. We left the restaurant stuffed. From the warm biscuits to the nicely made salad (no wilted or brown pieces!) and the perfectly smoked prime rib, we enjoyed everything and finished our plates. I would have given a 5 but the silverware was a major frustration. The blunt tines on the forks made picking up the meat difficult and the dull knives just shredded the beef. I ordered the chicken fried steak because you have to order their specialty. The meat was tender, (something I did not expect) the breading was crispy, hot and expertly fried. I loved that it didn't taste greasy or heavy. Loved the light spice of the gravy. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. Even the Little Tex with just one steak was ginormous- I had to take half home along with half of the mashed potatoes. They bring out a salad or slaw plus biscuits with your meal so you will be full. The restaurant has a nice roadhouse charm to it and the service is very friendly. Moral of the story: Step out of your comfort zone and try that place your spouse likes. Such a Phoenix staple! We love TexAZ Grill! If you sit at the bar, Missy is such a a rockstar, she'll take excellent care of you. In the dining room, be sure to have Cheryl wait on you! These ladies know hospitality. Of course, you MUST have chicken fried steak as your entree. And DO NOT say no to the homemade biscuits. I love them doused with butter and honey. So good! We usually start with the fried shrimp. It is perfectly fried, the breading is crunchy and not too heavy. The shrimp are jumbo sized and super fresh!
