This place absolutely knocked it out of the park. We don't usually splurge on fine dining, but for my other half's birthday we decided to make an exception, and wow... we are beyond glad we did. From the moment we walked in, everything was phenomenal. The service was stellar, attentive without being overbearing, and made the whole evening feel special. The atmosphere was the perfect balance of upscale and welcoming, with an incredible vibe that still made our kids feel comfortable and included. Now the food... unreal. Every single thing we ordered was perfection. The steak was hands down the best I've ever had in my life, cooked flawlessly and portioned generously enough that we even had leftovers. The elk medallions were absolutely superb, tender, flavorful, and unforgettable. And the sides? Just as impressive. Every bite was beyond amazing and clearly crafted with care. Even my extremely picky 11-year-old, who rarely likes much of anything when we go out, loved his meal, which honestly says a lot all by itself. This dinner was everything we hoped for and more. Wanted to love The Stockyards... but honestly, it missed the mark for me. We sat in the bar area, which was probably a mistake. The noise level was so loud everyone was talking over one another just to have a conversation. The bigger disappointment was the filet. I ordered the larger cut expecting a thick, tender steakhouse filet... instead it came out thin, stringy, and overcooked with tough silver running through the center. A good filet should cut like butter, and this one simply didn't. Also asked to substitute fries for the garlic mashed potatoes and still got the mashed potatoes. Vegetables were actually very good, but even the coffee at the end was weak. We were in town for one night and had dinner with friends. This place is great - pricy but great. Service was exceptional from start to finish. We had the 16oz ribeyes, two cooked medium and two medium rare. All four were perfect, which rarely happens at steak restaurants. The flavor was very good and the steaks were tender and juicy. Two of us had a loaded baked potato which was a pretty standard potato - hard to mess up, but I always asks for a lot of extra butter and very rarely actually get it. I got plenty of butter. Two had the garlic mashed potatoes, which were also very good. We all had house salads which were fresh and cold and the various dressings (ranch, bleu cheese and orange balsamic vinaigrette were very good. We also shared a basket of onion rings which were excellent - perfect amount of crispy breading and perfect crispiness. For dessert one had pecan pie which was very good. The rest of us had the bread pudding. So - it was good but definitely not like bread pudding we've ever had. It was closer to a slice of marbled cake with ice cream and a drizzle on top. Not bad, just not what we expected or what bread pudding is to us. We'd definitely go back if we are back in town and want an upscale meal. The restaurant itself has apparently been around for decades and the walls reflect some awesome history, which was very cool in itself. The place came highly recommended and my friend was raving about it so we went for lunch during the week. The place was pretty busy but we were seated quickly and the waitstaff was truly buzzing about and expediting everything seamlessly. Our waiter was very good and for the most part very professional but did make a few comments which weren't necessary. While I appreciate the nostalgic appearance of the restaurant, I'm simply not into an older rustic western look. Everything looks and feels like it's from another era which again I appreciate but just isn't my thing. I tried the shrimp platter which was ok but a bit overpriced. Literally four shrimp with soupy mashed potatoes and soggy zucchini for $32 wasn't what I was expecting. Overall we had a wonderful time at the Stockyards and enjoyed our meal! We came to celebrate my birthday. We enjoyed the lowkey atmosphere for a Sunday evening. The elk that my niece got was honestly the best bite most of us tried but all our steaks were cooked to preferred temp and very flavorful. The drinks were well made and the corn bread was tasty. Soups and salad were also good, but the Caesar salad was truly wonderful! Dessert was good but the main standout was the bread pudding. Omg so tasty and I don't even like bread pudding but this was just amazing!!! This is an old-fashioned Westernesque steakhouse with a cowboy-themed, cattleman's tone, design and décor from the dark wood aesthetics to the very abundant regional artifacts on the walls. This is really a very sophisticated ambience, with elegant and knowledgeable wait staff and overall attention to detail, with a vast and varied menu selection - not just steaks, as well as high end menu and so as is the pricing - purposefully I omitted the mention of value! Somehow my expectations from our previous visit were not met and we both walked away with a moderated view of this Arizona's famous 'original' steakhouse! We started our evening with excellent Sea Sun Pinot Noir and Felino Malbec servings. Yet, as aforementioned, everything til the moment of having our meal was fabulously superb and as a matter of fact, so was our post dinner time. Both my Wife's and my dinners were steak and as for mine I was especially surprised at the outcome. I ordered a Tenderfoot 8oz cut of Prime Rib, medium rare - yes it was but, I am used to a steak of this type to have been and usually plated, served on a warm platter whereby it retains its warmth when placed at the table. My steak was cold! Not only that, but the knife offered seemed dull enough to have a difficult time cutting through my steak. My Wife's Filet Mignon seemed tasty, appropriately cooked and proper to her, as was our side of asparagus. And I very much appreciated the birthday candled and fabulous tasting Strawberry Shortcake and the overall evening as a whole but could not pass without mentioning my unfortunate prime experience. With over 65 years of steak experience, both cooking and eating them I am well aware of a kitchen's dilemma and value their art and work - I do look forward to a potential next visit. The Beef Tenderloin was cooked to medium, but was a little rare in the middle. Still melt in your mouth superb steak. I tried it with each sauce and the creamed horseradish was the best. This didn't need any sauce and was perfect. The Parmesan potatoes were good. The Sautéed Button Mushrooms were perfect. The Brussel sprouts were good. Service was good. Looking for a Steak House and the Stockyards Restaurant sounded perfect. Ordered the Old Fashioned with Stockyards Bourbon by Outlaw Whiskey. Perfect Compliment with the steak. The Cornbread was good and the bread just ok. Went with the Baseball Sirloin with salad & garlic whipped potatoes. The steak was lean and cooked medium perfectly. I was excited to finally try this place after hearing so much about it. It was my first time in, and I sat at the bar. The bartender started by telling me a bit about the history of the restaurant, which I appreciated and the woodwork around the bar really is beautiful. I was served a bread basket with a variety of breads, but they were barely warm, and some were actually burnt. I ordered a cup of steak soup, which turned out to be the best thing I had all night. For my main, I went with the 14oz prime-grade ribeye, along with creamed spinach and a twice-baked potato. When the steak arrived, the food runner dropped the plate in front of me without a word and walked away. That's a strange touch for an upscale restaurant. I had to ask the bartender what the two sauces on the plate were. He was surprised and a little disappointed that the food runner didn't explain anything, but he quickly fixed it and took care of me. Unfortunately, it was clear the food had been sitting in the window for a while. The steak looked dry and wasn't warm. None of the food was, really. I was hungry and didn't want to hold things up since they were closing in about 30 minutes, so I didn't send it all back--but I did return the creamed spinach. Room-temperature creamed spinach is just unpleasant. The steak was okay at best. For a $75 prime ribeye, I expected better. I took half of it home for breakfast, only to find that a good portion was full of gristle. The bartender was fantastic, and the soup was excellent. We arrived at 6:00 and were seated immediately I ordered a glass of Felino Malbec which was quite good. The restaurant week menu had what I wanted, so I ordered it. Companion ordered off the regular menu. My dinner started off with salad. Totally frisee with a tiny bit of dressing and a tomato that was not ripe along with a piece of cucumber. I did not enjoy the salad and sent it back partly eaten. Companion had tomato seafood bisque soup which was a little spicy but was enjoyable. Next was the main course. Companion ordered a half rack of baby back ribs. While they were properly cooked they were slathered in a sauce that tasted like it came from the local supermarket. It was served with french fries that were "o.k.". I ordered the prime rib (12 oz) which was cooked exactly the way I wanted it. My side dish was ordered off the regular menu and was the creamed spinach. It was an extra cost, but was worth it. For dessert, my companion ordered the bread pudding. The only way to describe it was terrible. Chunks of what seemed to be chocolate cake mixed in with a strange tasting soggy bread pudding. After a few bites it was left on the table. For myself, I ordered the sour cream cheesecake. The texture and flavor was adequate, but one of the raspberries on my plate had a spot of grey mold on it, which was totally unacceptable. Unlike days of old, they no longer serve honey butter with the bread basket, and it was missed. I've come to stockyards restaurant a couple of times now. It is definitely one of our go to locations when we are in town for work. I'm not a local, and I don't know what the other buildings are in this plaza, but it looks like a business park with a lot of different offices. Not sure if that's actually the case, but that's the vibe it gives. Last time we were here, one of the waiters gave us a background of the history of the restaurant and it was very fascinating. The food is pretty good here. For appetizers, it seems like we ordered a lot of them. We had the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp are really big. This trip I went with the prime rib. It seasoned very well and it was super tender. They give you three different cards to choose from. I went with the middle cut only because I know that we had a tendency of ordering a lot of different appetizers and I wouldn't be as hungry as I normally would. The desserts were amazing, we tried practically one of everything. The strawberry shortcake was one of my favorites. The crème brûlée was spot on as well. The pecan pie was fantastic. And the cheesecake was amazing as well. Sorry for not being any help with narrowing down your dessert choices. I did order a root beer float and that definitely was a great way to end the night. Sad decline for one of our favorites. We have not been here for about two years and they have gone through some changes. Not all of them good. The remodel they did is nice - place is a bit brighter. But they now serve "high-choice" grade steak, which is not the same prime. Only they don't tell you that on the menu. You have to ask. They only have one prime-grade steak which is from Prescott of all places. All the other steaks are high choice. The problem is my high-choice ribeye was chewy and even had some grizzle I could not eat. My wifes prime Prescott steak was good though. I ordered rice pilaf as my side and it was disappointing. It had pecans & cranberries and did not even taste like rice, let alone rice pilaf. We always used to consider Stockyards as a good alternative to the Scottsdale steakhouses. Not any more. read more

While the establishment is large and classy on the inside there is an air of confidence and ego to their menu and being an institution. The service is extraordinary and attentive and very accommodating where they can be. Where I have to be honest, for my taste, the food doesn't warrant the pricing for the experience. The menu is very limited but that is to be expected from the STOCKYARD. $20 dollar sandwiches are a little extreme, though the portion and size are generous! We ordered the brisket, Cheesesteak, and Prime Rib all of which were very good but not 5star in my opinion. A cup of steak soup while utterly delicious was $7 and finished in about 7 bites. At the End of the Day - three meals with iced tea cost $92 and that seems extreme for lunch all of which were sandwiches. I really wanted to LOVE this place after reading the amazing reviews about the food, and also because of its historical significance in Phoenix; but the quality of the food and service at The Stockyards was mediocre at best. The history of this place is very cool, and the overall ambiance and decor is definitely fitting for an old school Cowboy Americana Tavern type feel with an awesome looking Saloon in the back rear of the restaurant. Upon arrival for our reservation, we were promptly seated by the hostess and greeted by our waitress. The most memorable part of The Stockyards had to be how loud it was inside--I'm not even sure if the restaurant had music playing or not ...? It literally felt like we were on set in an old western movie saloon, and everyone inside was yelling as obnoxiously loud as they possibly could!!! My mom and I dropped in here on a Thursday evening, and we could barely hear each other speaking across the table without raising our voices; it was extremely difficult to hear what our waitress was saying--I really honed in on my lip-reading skills! The complimentary corn bread and biscuits would have been better if they came out hot and soft, but they were luke warm and burnt ;( My mom's house salad was very basic and blah--I could easily whip up a better salad at my house. My steak soup was good, but it was definitely not as amazing as several reviews made it out to be--it was essentially just chunks of tender steak in a creamy broth. As we were eating our salad/soup, a runner quickly dropped off shrimp and sausage at our table, which we hoped may have been a complimentary gift because it was our first time here, and we didn't order either of those items. We tried to tell him we didn't order them, but he probably couldn't hear us over everyone screaming at each other and just walked away. Someone else's appetizers literally sat on our table for about 5 min. before our waitress came by, and we caught her attention to ask her if this was someone else's food or if she wanted us to try the shrimp/sausage? She seemed annoyed by this blunder and without giving us a verbal response, she quickly flagged another food runner walking by to take the two appetizers off our table and bring them back to the kitchen. I sincerely hope they didn't try to re-serve those apps to the table they were supposed to go to; it seemed like our waitress likely intended to have the kitchen re-heat them and then send them back out to the correct table. If this were a classy establishment, they would have left the apps at our table, apologized for the mistake, and told us to try them on the house, especially since they'd been sitting on our table for so long. My mom was not impressed by the Herb Crusted Alaskan Halibut or the sides--she said they were "okay". I tried her Halibut, and it was too "fishy" tasting for me, even after squeezing a lemon wedge on a little piece. My 8 oz. filet mignon was also merely okay, the bearnaise sauce definitely made it better. But the filet by itself had a kind of perfume or gas-like after taste; which the bernaise helped off-set. The filet looked better than it actually tasted. The scallop potatoes were surprisingly excellent, but I didn't come here for great potatoes--I expected a great filet mignon! We both got the pecan pie, which the first few bites of were AMAZING! But, that initial nostalgia died off quickly because the pie was mostly composed of large pieces of pecan, so it literally felt like we were just eating mostly pecans inside a pie crust--there should have been more gooey filling in there; or at the very least, the pecans should have been chopped up finer. Ultimately, the pecan pie was not at all what it was hyped up to be; I would not order it again. Overall, The Stockyards ... allegedly "Arizona's Original Steakhouse" missed the mark. I am not one to celebrate mediocrity, and the entire experience at this lower-end fairly expensive steakhouse was so underwhelming that it left me feeling like I was swindled out of my hard earned money. My mom and I would rate the food and service here as okay, but below average when considering the price of the fish/steak; especially when comparing it to other upscale local steakhouses we have dined at, hence the reasonably appropriate 2-Star review. I do not plan to return to the Stockyards because there are so many better steakhouses in Arizona; and I would recommend others to avoid this place if you are looking for a great filet mignon or seafood dish. Wow... Honestly this could be a top 3 steak I've had and will have in my entire life. We were in town playing some golf and had this place recommended as the best steak someone else had ever had. We couldn't agree more. Everything here is great as we got a healthy amount off the menu. Our personal favorites were the filet mignon and the Parmesan potato stack, but I really feel like you couldn't go wrong ordering anything off the menu. We happened upon this beautiful gem of a restaurant by chance. Quiet, elegant, old school steakhouse feel. I loved it! Owned by a famous cattle baron from the Tucson area. My kind of restaurant. I loved all the cowboy art too. Our waiter had a good sense of humor. Me: How are they cooking my steak? Waiter: On the grill! This is a steakhouse. Me: I'm asking because some restaurants use butter and a cast iron. I don't like no butter or dairy near my meat. Waiter: Nothing but good ole fire. Me: Good. Thank you. Of course, here we are with the Chilean Sea Bass question. Is it real Chilean Sea Bass? Yes, it was and flaky yummy. I can't say enough about the bread basket. Brought my dad for a late father days dinner on Monday evening and we had a great time. The hostess got us checked in and we were seated right away. Cold water was served immediately and Dan our server came over and introduced himself. He gave us time to look over the menu. Warm biscuits and corn bread were brought out and mmmm both breads were yummy. We ordered: 1 Grilled Chopped Steak and a side salad ($32) 12 oz Patty, Caramelized Onions and Mushroom Gravy 1 Herb Roasted Half Chicken and a side of green chili soup ($32) Whipped Potatoes and Seasonal Vegetable 1 Pan Seared Tomahawk Pork Chop with a side salad ($42) Parmesan Potatoes and Apple-Cranberry Chutney The food was delicious and the portions were huge. Both salads were crisp and fresh and the green chili soup had so much flavor. My roasted chicken was flavorful and juicy. The mashed potatoes were our favorite as they were very fluffy. My dad enjoyed his pork chop and said it was cooked well. The chopped steak was thick and the gravy was really good. The broccolini was our seasonal vegetable and these were cooked perfectly, not at all overcooked and they had a nice subtle crunch. Service was top notch from the start. Dan was attentive and friendly, thank you! The inside of the restaurant has so many cool artifacts. We walked around after we ate and enjoyed looking at the old photographs.
