So decided to try Texaz grill since I heard they have the best country fried steak in AZ. They also have good reviews. Go in and it's $16.50 for a fried steak and some mashed potatoes. $15 for catfish. A bit pricey but I press on. Get the food and I'm greeted with quite possibly the saddest plate ever. A small wallop of country gravy for two massive steaks on this tiny plate. It was honestly a little insulting. But again I press on. Rear up to cut into this steak that has been so hyped. I raise my fork expected to be raised to heaven and...I'm met with the most tasteless piece of fried food I've ever had in my life. That couldn't be so I try again and again until I finally give. It has absolutely no flavor. Not only that but the breading is very thick and little meat present. Decide to try their Creole seasoning courtesy of zatarans at the table. It helped but not enough to pick the pieces up of my shattered expectations. I've had astronomically better country fried steak at country boys down the street. Even dennys. Mashed potatoes is the same. No flavor. Even the gravy has none. As a Texan I'm appalled honestly that this is considered the best. I push the plate away and prep to bag it up. Maybe my dogs will eat it :-(they didn't). Move onto the catfish and same thing. No flavor with thick odd breading. Not the usual delicious crisp light cornmeal breading I'm used to in the South but something heavy and bland. No taste at all. Even covering it in spicy cocktail sauce couldn't help. At first when walking in I saw nothing but Texas stuff posted on the walls all sorts of arrangements so I obviously thought things were gonna be super delicious and I was eager to order. Upon receiving my order I was kinda disappointed it was a huge portion which was great but I did not find much of a flavor to it. Special of the night special Grilled steak. We all know what is grilled steak. And I ordered a Dirty Martini. Not an Oily one- but probably related to Texas, oil got in it somehow. Too bad the steak got just pan-fried and not grilled as advertised. Brought it to their attention and they said that they feel sorry that I did not understand their wording. Let me get this straight. And that's how I explained it to the manager. English is my fourth language. When says - grilled - it's grilled. Not pan / flat top seared. He said - we did not say char-grilled- . Oh well with my poor English and knowledge in the kitchen learning from 2 stars Michelin chefs, and growing up in the industry Char is usually coming from charcoal and has a bit of burnt on the outside. . Just,, grilled ' you assume at least a gas grill, and the meat is put on the grill. Long story short. They took out an oily DRINK, which I was not able to drink,but I paid for a steak I was not able to eat. Like they said it's always bigger in Texas. They do also have other amazing favorites too but if you are a chicken fried steak fan then you have to come down and try it out. They have great customer service, great server they are so nice and sweet. The inside is very busy but it has a lot of history on the wall you always find something new on the wall I haven't seen the last time you were there. I'm a native and remember when this place was Carlos O'Briens. Tonight, I got a message from Grubhub enticing me to repeat my order from a couple weeks ago by taking $10 off my $30 order. Easy! Our total will be close to $70. Wife was having catfish, and of course, chicken fried steak for me. Okra again, dessert, extra gravy..... When I went to order, I couldn't find chicken fried steak on the menu. I called to inquire. A woman answered and asked me to wait on hold. OK. I waited, and waited ... 10 mins later, she hadn't returned so I hung up to try again. This time "Derek" answered. I told him about being left on hold. He said she must have forgotten me? Uh yeah.Then I asked where the chicken fried steak was on the Grubhub menu? He said beef cube steak is too expensive to allow them to have this on the meal delivery service menus anymore. Really!!!! Chicken Fried Steak, the item that Texaz Grill built its' reputation on cannot be ordered for delivery! It's part of a combo plate for "big eaters" that can be delivered? They have ribeye steaks and NY strip steaks for delivery? Those have to be more pricy than cube steak? Why not just raise the price? I would pay an extra $5 to $7. Or just give me one piece? It pains me to write this. I am a Texan, a Houstonian. I was raised on chicken fried steak and moved to Phoenix two decades ago with cream gravy in my veins. I know full well what a good cat fish dinner taste like and no one can tell me that Blue Bell is "ok". I first found Texaz Grill when it was Texas Grill - before they were forced to change the name. That said, I have been eating here for a very long time and they are - had been - the next best thing to the real thing when it comes to chicken fried steak. That hot plate of the golden mother-load was satisfying and warming to a home-sick soul. I think I may have cried the day I came in, sat at a booth and saw the placard on the table that simply read, "We now carry Blue Bell Ice Cream". That's been some time now. I moved away a few years ago but for whatever reason I have to return to Phoenix, Texaz Grill is a no-brainer. About a year ago I ordered the usual CFS and we were a little surprised to find the meat was tough. Before, all you needed was a fork and maybe a knife for good manners. We wrote it off as a fluke but then the next time, a few short months later, another order in town and it was ... weird ... chewy. What happened to the melt-in-your-mouth CFS this place has been warmly bringing out for ages? I began to wonder if there has been a change of suppliers for their meat, a new cook overdid it - denial and love for some Texas home cooking kept me silent and I went back again. The catfish had always been a winner, my S.O. ordered that and it turned out to be the better meal. Wow. I was so sad. A few months passed, enough for us to forget, so here we were this week after anxiously watching family and friends go through Hurricane Harvey, I wanted nothing more than a Texaz Grill CFS & gravy to hug my soul. ...sigh... I cannot recall having to fight so hard to get a piece of meat to tear away so I can swallow it without fear of choking on the tendon strings. Me with a knife: cut, cut, cut, cut, CCUT, CUTT,,, CUT. Then literally grabbing one end with my teeth, the other ripping it with my hand to get it to split so it is safe to chew. And chew, and chew, and chew, and chew... . We didn't finish it. This is *NOT* a ~Texas~ chicken fried steak. It was like Denny's wishing it was. But the catfish, as always, was good. I am so, so, disappointed. This is the forth time, so this is no longer a fluke. I do not know what has happened over there but Texaz Grill, you need to know that whoever is supplying your meat these days, I would take it under serious consideration to look into them a little deeper. Maybe it's the prep that has changed - I don't know but something changed with the CFS and not for the good. Again, I am from Texas and we know meat. This stuff is bad. Really bad. After nearly choking on tendon-like strings (on two different occasions) that wouldn't tear, also the very thought of so many tendon-like strings in my mouth really grosses me out, I'm wondering what exactly is this 'meat' that I'm eating??? Honestly, I'm sorry, but after several overlooks and tries I have to resign myself to the truth: I am an old-school customer and a Texan so I know what this place used to cook when it came to chicken fried steak and I know how it *should* be cooked. But the truth is, it's terrible and I no longer feel safe eating it. Anyone who is new to this place and not well versed in a properly cooked, tender Texas Chicken Fried steak will be in 'awe' of the plateful and love it and maybe those are your new customers who don't know any better. But for folks like me who miss our mama's home cooking and greasy hole-in-the-wall local restaurants serving it up as it's meant to be and sometimes just need a "I hate you Hurricane Harvey" hug, I'll have to wait until i get back home again cuz i give up. Very disappointing. Down in arizona visiting the in laws for my birthday and my father in law said it was a fabulous place to eat. Well for starters the waitress was one of the rudest waitresses I have ever had. She had a smug look on her face, was not friendly, not helpful and when we asked for straws she threw them on the table. Then asked about the website not working to sign up for the buy one get one meal for my birthday and she said it wasn't her problem. Once the food came out it got even worse. My chicken fried steak that they're so proud off was 50%breading 50%meat. And the mashed potatoes were colder than the waitresses heart. I've had better chicken fried steak out of the dumpster at Dennys. My father in law said it was the worst experience he had ever had there and doesn't plan to ever return. Wow, a big upgrade since my last visit earning an extra star. My Daughter had the chicken fried steak which was tender and the gravy had a great flavor, definitely better than the last visit. My son had the Fried Catfish which was nicely breaded and fried to perfection, the home fries were the only disappointment as the were undercooked and lacked any flavor. My sister had the Fried Shrimp with mashed Potatoes which the shrimp were large and tasted fantastic, glad we shared making a turf and surf platter for each of us. I ordered the Freidy Filet which was cooked to a perfect med rare with the only flaw a line of gristle through the center, I cut around it making the rest of the steak very tender but should have been removed before cooking or serving. read more

We went here last Saturday. Good decor, pretty good service, food needs some work. We were greeted when we arrived and told how long the wait was. Then, after the expected wait were shown to our table. So far so good. We ordered our dinners, two of which included Salad. The greens for the salad looked they came out of a bag and definitely were not fresh. Kind of that slimy one week old feeling ... We both had the house dressing. Didn't like it. My wife had the chicken, I had the Lin Su (a steak with two shrimp on top, and our son had the BBQ. My son liked the BBQ. My wife and I didn't care for ours. Perhaps we were so turned off by the salad that it colored our perception of the meal. I'm not sure. We might try it again. Hopefully the salad is an anomaly. read more

The most filthy establishment I've ever been in, in my life. Dust covers eveything from what's hanging on every inch of the walls, to the air conditioning vents are caked with it. The refrigerator behind the bar is filthy on the outside, had no bottom covering and you could see the fifth underneath. The partition that slides between the kitchen and the backside of the bar has a foot gap at the bottom and when bartender slid it open you could view about 5 foot long worth of flour strewn all over the floor. I watch the man behind the counter pull out a new pecan pie to cut it into slices and placed his whole palm on top of the crust to get a grip on the pie, cut turn, palm it again and repeat. I will never set foot in that place ever again. It's disgusting and should be closed for deep cleaning before reopening. read more

We are transplanted Texans. We were really missing our favorite foods, until now. Nancy was our waitress. She was excellent! Very helpful explaining the menu, and gave us samples of their delicious chopped beef and chili. We decided on chicken fried steak for my hubby, and fried catfish with okra for me. The Cfs was platter sized! Lightly breaded with mashed potatoes and corn. Very tasty. My catfish and okra was excellent. We took home a ton of food. Husband wanted to try dessert. I got "little" portion classic chicken fried steak --- and it was as I imagined not at all small & bigger than a non-Texas version of "large" anywhere else. And it just isn't large portions anybody can do that but everything is flavored well it wasn't greasy, but tender amazing mouthwatering, coma inducing. But wait the famous chicken fried steak is not the Lone Star :/...It is rivaled by prime rib and have fun tasting it is as good as any you would have a top Notch steakhouse like Ruth's Chris or Fleming's...Without all of the pomp and price tag.
