The happy hour specials are solid options but I opted for the Baja tacos this time. They were soggy and the fish stick sized piece of battered fish in each taco was bland and underwhelming. Last night saw a good portion of Downtown Anchorage without power, so we found Tequila 61 (with power) and trekked over there to hang out. It was one of the busiest nights of the winter for any restaurants in Downtown Anchorage that had power, but the Tequila 61 was awesome, rising to the challenge. The decor was top notch--I felt like I was in any other modern metropolitan city--and the latin/Mexican food had amazing flavor. If I lived in Anchorage, I could easily imagine being a refular here, and taking folks from out of town here to show them around. Love this place! read more

We came here for lunch, it was not busy but service took a little longer. We didn't order much after being told that the Calamari was not available after we ordered and I was already getting impatient and decided I'll just grab a snack on the way home. Husband ordered fish tacos that I took one bite but it smelled too fishy. Husband seemed not to care and ate as he was hungry and needed to get back to work. Taco chips were stale and the salsa could use a little flavor. We are planning to come back to try their discounted taco day and give it another shot. Yummy. Atmosphere is nice tonight its Thursday so they have an awesome Sax player. He has up the mood in here by 100%. You can see ppl bobbing to the music. Listening to him and drinking this margarita made me want to stay longer. The music added a certain class to this place. The decor is kind of glamorous but you dont feel under dresses with Jean's on. My Latin waitress was amazing a pleasant surprise compared to a lot of other places ice been this week. She was helpful with explaining the menu options and very warm and inviting. Ordered tasty veggies tacos (reg price $12) made with portabello mushrooms & zucchini. We had Queso Fundido $15 as appetizer for 3 . Very filling though the corn tortillas served with it were a bit greasy, so I ordered a basket of chips ($1.50). Overall experience very positive! read more

You can bet that I very much didn't expect to find any sort of noteworthy tacos in Anchorage, but my friends one of the beautiful parts of globalization is that you simply can't stop the flo of the taco. Ya kno? Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? I don't know what was in this space prior to Tequila 61 as they most certainly weren't here when I was last in Anchorage a few years ago, but they've made great use of what is some serious real estate. The decor is excellent and the service is top notch. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Allow me to quickly vent if I may for a moment just on an ordering technicality here at Tequila 61 because I think it's important and at the end of the day it's the reason that Tequila is going to end up with four stars instead of five. You can't order tacos a la carte, and I don't understand why that's the case. The menu at Tequila 61 is hugely enticing, and I was drawn to a whole swath of the available tacos. I would have liked, more than anything, to mix and match some of these tacos, but that request was shot down. Twice. To be a top notch taco spot you simply have to allow for a la carte ordering - end of story. Now, with that behind us, I paid a very reasonable $12.00 for three smaller Duck Confit tacos, which was a reasonable price point. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? These were excellent tacos top down. From the fresh and fluffy tortillas to the flavorful meats that came together with great little peripherals like chile serrano and tomatillo, these were right on par with the best contemporary tacos that I find in Los Angeles. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? The lack of the ability to sample some of Tequila 61s other tacos on an a la carte basis keeps me from making this a five star review. I am a sucker for ambiance when I dine out, and this place freakin HAS IT! Super cute decor and comfy booths! Service was perfect: kind and attentive, but not overbearing or overselling. And obviously the food has to hit the mark, too. We started with the Goat Cheese Balls which, I could eat fried goat cheese ALL DAY! For a cocktail I had the orange julius-like martini, which was tasty and strong! Then I ordered the duck confit tacos and they were perfect as well! Spicy but not so much you can't enjoy them. Came as a work group of 8 and have to say our server did an excellent job taking care of everyone's needs. Myself and another worker ordered the pork chop and both agreed that it was way over cooked and tough when trying to chew. Another coworker ordered the salmon tacos and there was maybe one inch of salmon on each of the 3 tacos. Everyone else ordered tacos as well and agreed that there was less substance in the tacos than one would get at Taco Bell. We all agreed that we wouldn't make it a point to return. read more

We decided to come here for their taco Tuesday deal (half price tacos) and they were quite delicious. However, I'm not a huge fan of the whole tapas restaurant thing where you pay more money for less food that you share with other people. So that being said, if you're craving a good decent taco I'd come here only on Tuesdays. Otherwise it's not worth paying 13-15$ for three tiny tacos (in my opinion). This place definitely has that great upbeat downtown vibe that other Tex-mex restaurants around the lower 48 provide. I enjoyed the house/edm type music they played, however it is on the loud side so just be mindful of that if you're trying to find a place that's more quiet and intimate you might want to skip this place, at least on a Tuesday, anyway. I had the jicama shrimp tacos and it literally came with three pieces of medium sized crispy shrimp. Everything tasted super fresh and the "tortilla" the shrimp were on tasted similar to a water chestnut. They were very different and good but I was hungry again when we got home an hour later. I paired this meal with their avispa cocktail (chilkoot gin, jalapeño, & lime) and it was delicious. My husband got the beef and chicken tacos and said he liked the chicken better. I tried a piece of the beef from his taco and it wasn't super flavorful and was very chewy, so I would not recommend that taco. So my final review: they have awesome cocktails, ambiance is great, and the tacos are decent but I wouldn't come here and pay full price for them. read more

This review is for the Wednesday date night menu which is a fantastic deal and everyone should try it. You get the option of a shared appetizer, entree, shared dessert and either 2 margaritas or an entire bottle of wine for $59. There were about 4-5 options for an appetizer. We ordered the beef skewers for our appetizer. It comes with 4 small skewers on top a bed of cabbage, served with a soy dipping sauce but the beef was pretty tough/dry. It's a thin cut that's grilled, so it can easily over cook. The dipping sauce was tasty There are 3 entree options: pasta of the week, fajitas for two (chicken, pork, or veggies) and an eggplant something? I honestly can't remember. Our entree selection was the chicken fajitas for two which was really good. Although we weren't given the option of corn or flour tortillas, they automatically brought flour. The chicken/veggies portion is large and comes with variety of sides: guacamole, sour cream, cilantro/lime rice, refried beans, a lime/tomatillo salsa, and slice of lime. My only complaint was the texture of the rice was too soft, I legit thought it was cauliflower rice or something because it just looked mushy. The menu had 3 options for dessert: Mexican brûlée, horchata cornbread or a flourless chocolate cake. We chose the Mexican brûlée but were later informed that they didn't have it, and told they instead had flan . So, we went with the flan which was very good. Soft and delicate texture, not too eggy, perfect caramelized sugar. All the things a flan should be. I also ordered the horchata cornbread to-go and ate it at home. The vanilla ice cream that comes with it is AMAZING and the cornbread is to die for! A really interesting dessert, super pleased with it. The date night menu comes with alcoholic drinks, your choice of 2 Margaritas or an entire bottle of wine. The wine selections is either a Cabernet (red), Chardonnay (white) or a Cava (sparkling). We opted for the red , which wasn't the best I have ever had, but definitely not the worst. It was a Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016. Server opened the bottle at our table and everything. We were very happy with our meal and experience overall. Knocked it down a star which I know is unfair, but they've removed some of my favorite things from the menu. Please bring back the Elote drink, I need it. Also, their guacamole is now being serviced with corn chips instead of the sweet potato chips, need these back as well. Wow. This place was exactly what we needed after two long flights from Texas. The waitress was very nice. Our orders came out exactly right. The decor was flawless. The food ... oh the food was cooked to perfection. Mmm!mm! Every bite of food was delicious. Every bite. This restaurant is okay. The service was fine but nothing to write home about. The blackened halibut tacos were good and so were the oysters but I have never had 6 oysters for over $20 before. The halibut on its own was chewy and overcooked. The tortilla soup was pretty good. The duck tacos were also good and the best thing ordered and I would only go back to get those. Probably the best impromptu stop made in a long time!!!. The mrs. and I were just perusing after a big meal and walking off the food with some shopping. We stopped in to just grab a drink and rest our feet. Ended up staying for multiple drinks, crab legs, and live music ! The bar tender was super nice and made some really good drinks. They had a good variety of cocktails to choose from which made it hard to settle on anything. The crab legs are..... UH-Mazing!!! Our party of four ordered carne asada "tacos" and received corn tortillas with scant amount of beef or salsa. The stale tortilla chips offset the watered down margarita. YES! I get to snag a first! It's getting increasingly hard in this town! I went to Tequila 61 during their soft/squishy/secret opening last Friday night. The ambiance, holy crap. Very nice! Classy without looking like it's trying too hard. It's just: cool. Apparently this used to be a McDonald's? Seriously? How? We sat at the bar. The cocktails look a bit too expensive for my blood (most were $15. Yeah.) so I ordered a King St Pilsner and called it good. Came out in a lovely jar-with-handle mug. Nice touch! Bar tender(s) were really friendly and service was prompt. I got the carnitas tacos. They were pretty great, I just wish the soft tacos shells were more crisped. They were a bit spongy and soft, but that seems to be the case at most places in Alaska. Downtown desperately needed a fun spot like this, I look forward to coming back and sampling more of the menu! read more

During our stroll around town we stopped in. I had a shot of Clase Azul for sipping. Very tasty and smooth. A hint of vanilla. Bartender was simpatico. We were not dining but we saw two soldiers arrive for lunch. My wife bought them lunch, anonymously. The bartender and hostess liked that. We feel fortunate to be able to do stuff like that once in a while. The place has a newish feel and the decorations and furnishings were nice. Ah! This should be a 5 star! They have so much going for them. Tacos are great! Taco Tuesday 1/2 off all tacos but the duck is a good deal. They didn't expect so many people to come on this Tuesday but they said sorry for that. I will say before I rant and complain I will be back for a second visit but that's because I want to give this place another shot. We arrived well after what would be considered a dinner rush. They had 3 groups in front of us. Was told 10-15 then 45 to an hour. Looking in the dinning room they had 4 tables open then on what I am guessing was a private party side they had multiple large tables open. We waited 2 mins then took an open bar seat. Moments later all 3 groups got sat at the same time. If you wanted us to wait to create the thought that your amazing you have failed. If you had us wait because you didn't want to overwhelm your floor staff you have again failed as you sat all 3 groups at the same time. This was probably due to people coming in and not being willing to wait an hour they left. This seemed to put you into a panic so you sat everyone at once. We opted to sit at the bar. Happy because we got a spot fast and didn't have to wait. This was the only thing that was fast. We got ignored for 10 mins then they asked if the mess in front of us was ours... no we are not the people who just sat here and ate a meal with you. I started this review two months ago. I hope that they have gotten a lot better and we will try them again I am giving them a three because I am on the fence. read more

Tried the veggie tacos and spicy margarita. The food was okayish and the service was pretty slow. The same person was serving 4 other tables and did not have any time to check on us. I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 stars because I fucking loved the drinks AND well it was my 21st birthday. But my review may not be very accurate as I was pretty drunk BUT from what I remember the tacos were VERY BLAND. I'm so sorry but the tacos did NOT have that authentic Mexican kick like at all. The portions were great! But when the flavor isn't it didn't really matter really. I had the Baja tacos and the al pastor and it was very bland. I swear to Christ Taco King and Serrano's have better tacos. The drinks were banging and I got a dessert on the House since it was my birthday. But man that food was bland bro. I ordered the chips and salsa and was disappointed when their salsa tasted more like tomato sauce than a real Mexican salsa. And the rice and beans weren't very flavorful. We got the guac & chips for an app: personally I could of made the guac better at home. For it being such a fancy restaurant that it is, I thought they would of used fresher ingredients. The chips were good but nothing to be impressed by. I got the Al Pastor tacos. I was a bit bummed about the salsa. The chipotle seasoning they used over powered the pineapple and it was puréed salsa. The only good thing we had was the popcorn shrimp. It's a small basket for a high price and while it's good, for that amount it should be double or triple the size. The queso dip is as flavorful as plain tofu. The guac is about the same. Carnitas tacos also had zero flavor. The empanadas were extra doughy and not enough filling. Ugh, and then the drinks? Claimed they did not have dark rum (although my drink was made with dark rum... weird) Food was ok. Weirdest tacos I have ever seen, but tasty. A little over a week ago, I made a reservation for my birthday dinner this evening. I selected this restaurant as they were able to accommodate a larger party, while I also remembered them having good food from a prior dining experience. They allowed me to bring a custom cake to be served following dinner, which was a plus. Come the night of the dinner; it seemed a relatively empty restaurant, seeing only three other tables occupied by patrons, no larger than a party of four at each table. There appeared to be only one waitress, who was seemingly overwhelmed by the amount of tables she was tending to. The hostess subsequently would have to step in to deliver drinks, appetizers and refill the water carafes. In regard to the service: the hostess seemed nice, but again, was seemingly overwhelmed and barely paid us any mind. Multiple times myself or other members from my table would try to get her attention, she would look at me/them, and proceed to walk away, never to actually return to address us. It took about 25 minutes from the time we sat down (the whole party arrived at the same time) before she even came to our table to take drink orders. Following drink orders, it took another ~15 minutes before returning for an appetizer order. It was almost half an hour from the time we ordered appetizers to order the entrees. Many of us actually asked eachother if we had already placed the entree order as it had been so long. Despite it being an hour from the time the entrees were even ordered, and the rest of the patrons had left, our table was still neglected from any drink orders, refills, or quality checks. In regard to timeliness: it took about 10 minutes from the time drinks were ordered to be brought to the table. Appetizers about 20 minutes, one was seemingly forgotten about (not like the waitress would acknowledge us to bring that to her attention), which later got brought out the same time as the entrees - nearly an hour from the time it was ordered. Again, once the entrees has arrived, no attention was given in any aspects until the completion of dinner. The quality of the food was quite good, as were the cocktails once they were received - but the service is what really diminished the entire dining experience. Once we had finished dinner, we basically had to track the waitress down to remind her of the cake, which was also seemingly forgotten about. Following the arrival of the cake, we were promptly met with the bill. Given the fact that we had been at the restaurant for well over two hours at this point, we quickly paid and left. Again, the food was good - but the quality of service was greatly lacking, subsequently making the dining experience quite unpleasant, as the talk of the table was continuously questions regarding how long it had been since an order was placed, or we had been acknowledged. Oh my gosh it's a great Taco Tuesday! I regret not checking in before because this wasn't my first good experience here. I should have taken pictures. . . each time. The only thing I wish is different, is my water refills. I may be more demanding than the usual customer when it comes to water, but I'm fine with tap and I like my glass full. This visit I had the carne asada and baja tacos after some guacamole and chips. The guac is great! I liked the carne asada, but I've never been a fan of carne asada from the start. The baja tacos were epic, I'd squeeze the lime and order again. Next time for me, baja tacos and a new taco selection. read more
