Panchos has decreased in quality and value in the last year or so. The last three visits have been overpriced food in my opinion. The service is always good. My shrimp tasted awful. Like they were frozen, thawed and froze again. The sauce they simmered it in wasn't good and I'm convinced helped overcook them to a rubbery consistency. My steak was fine, but was well done vs medium rare like I ordered. I prepared myself that it likely wouldn't be cooked right, but I expected at least a little pink. I know it's not a steak house, but they cook steak for other items so I figured I'd be okay. My partner said his ranchero steak wasn't very good. He only ate it so I wouldn't feel uncomfortable eating while he waited. The meat wasn't very good he said, tasted old. He said the sauce wasn't very good either. For the rise in prices of things quality has gone down. They haven't done much for improvements - my seat had a big gash in it. Unfortunately after being a customer for many years I don't see myself returning here after 3 strikes this year of poor quality food at an inflated price. I think they should consider cutting their menu in half and really focusing on making quality dishes. read more

It's been decades since I've been to Pancho's. The restaurant is weathered, for sure. I probably wouldn't plan a romantic date night there. But, as we walked in, the seats were filled with people that you could tell were regulars - and that is always a good sign. The food came out hot and fast, and there was a LOT of it. Happy Cinco! When it comes to the Mexican food scene in Anchorage, some specialize in food, while some specialize in margaritas/tequila only. That leaves us with a small handful of places that do both Mexican food and drinks decently. Panchos Villa executes both well, in my humble opinion. Panchos Villa does a great job at handling their lunch rush. Waitresses are always welcoming and efficient. Food is consistently cooked to order, hot and flavorful. This visit, we had a serious language barrier when trying to inquire about available brews on tap. Even brew that we were told by the bartender, was on tap, was still brought to us in bottle form. I it's 2020, restaurants and bars are fluctuating in and out of stages of lockdown and I'm SO TIRED OF COOKING!!! So I chose my local Spenard Mexican joint and figured I'd give them a try for pick up. Pancho's did not disappoint. Now, let's keep in mind the usual quality of "Mexican" food in Anchorage. I ordered a chicken burrito dinner with some ingredient adjustments and they were happy to oblige. The burrito was HUGE, like I'm going to eat it for lunch and maybe even dinner tomorrow. The chicken was well seasoned and the whole plate was pretty darn tasty. But let's talk about the real highlights here. One was the top shelf margarita I ordered to go.... and ness a little worried about splurging on this as I had seen some friends posting about "to go drinks" where they got a cup of margarita mix and a shooter of tequila. Well....not here!! This was a legit hand poured margarita on the rocks, and it was delicious!! All taped up and ready to travel. The other highlight was the Sopaipillas. TBH I had to eat these before I had dinner. They were fresh, and not greasy at all....:but hold on.....they came with little cups with honey, chocolate, icing, and whip cream!!!! Now, this is my first time ever ordering Sopaipillas so I'm not sure what or how they usually come but all the delicious dipping sauces were quite the treat. read more

I was born and raised on the south side and had never heard of this place. I recently came back home to visit from moving away 6 years ago and decided to check Yelp because my old favorite, La Mex had closed and I wasn't craving the capitalized Gallos/Taco King (even though they are very delicious too) This place popped up and we went last night! SOOOOO GOOD. Not sure why more people don't talk about this place although they might be and I just don't live here or hang on this side of town much. However, it's definitely worth the trip! Ok, so by lower 48 standards, this place sucks. Back home, authentic mexican food abounded, so maybe I'm a little spoiled. But by Anchorage standards, this place is ok, which is why I've gone more than once. I have yet to find Mexican food in town that is actually authentic. The main reason I went back is they have tamales, which are impossible to find in Anchorage, and those cheese stuffed peppers. They're not anything to write home about, but it's something different that what all the other shit hole mexican places in town sell, so points for that. The decor is literally straight out of the 80's. I bet they haven't changed a thing in decades. Kinda novel. Service is fairly spotty. If you're a tourist from out of town and you want to experience the best of what Anchorage has to offer, this is not the place for you. Anchorage does fusion and Asian food (Thai, Vietnamese, sushi) very well, so stick to that. But for locals who are looking to mix it up a little, then this place is passable. read more

While, I would consider myself an avid mexicana food enthusiast, this is just how others like Angie M. have described as "Americanized Mexican Food". They are definitely great with their flavor, but i'm not feeling anything really like I jumped on a plane and went to Mexico and got that food from the great grandmother of the family. It's that few steps up from just normal mexican food. I am still dumbfounded on the prices for mexican food here in Anchorage. I know rents are high and we want our fair share of wealth, but seriously $15-$16 average for a three taco plate? I settled for the choose two combo which by the way is $11.75 if you want three its $13.25 or $13.50. I got the burrito and chimichanga with all rice. Both were yummy as was the rice. I wish the chimi was more crispy, it seemed like it had just been dropped for about 2 seconds. The chips are great and the salsa just OK. I do like the atmosphere here. I think this may be the worst Mexican food I've had in Alaska. You can tell a lot about a Mexican place by their rice and beans, and both were very questionable. Tried the huevos rancheros and it may be the worst traditional rancheros I've had. Garnish consisted of olives and finally shredded wilted lettuce...or something on a big leaf of lettuce. Just weird. (Worst huevos rancheros I've had was some quirky take on the dish at a very mediocre new American place in the L48.) read more

What a pleasant surprise this place turned out to be. A couple of my coworkers and I decided to go for margaritas after work and guess what? Pancho's is one of the few Mexican restaurants that has a full service bar. Other Mexican restaurants only serve beer and wine. I enjoyed my ceviche. The service was fast and friendly and prices reasonable. Their margaritas are good. We tried the blackberry and the pomegranate--so much better than the blackberry jalapeño margarita at Tequila 61 for sure. The decor was tasteful and seating was comfy. Will come back again. We recently visited Alaska from California and Pancho's in our search for a Mexican Restaurant. We were pleased to find the food such as the Carnitas and soft Tacos were very good. We were pleased to find the prices were much lower than other restaurants we had visited. The service did leave a little to be desired as we had to call the waitress over for return service. read more

I get the feeling almost as soon as I walk in that this place has been here a while. It's kind of dark, dated in late 70's, and a little odd. The bar tender looks like she's had a hell of a weekend and I fear for my drinks. The old guy that walks around the bars at night selling roses is in here hustling and loudly chatting it up with all the employees like a celebrity. I'm either going to love this place or hate it. Only time will tell. The wait for service was only about 2 minutes and the drinks came out shortly after. The Jack n diet Coke double tall? Not great but poured enough like a Jack n Coke I guess. The salsa is ok, reminds me of Garcia's in Eagle River. The chips.... Pretty banged up and broken. Am I on candid camera.... Is this a joke? The Queso Fundito (cheese, chorizo, and Pico) arrived looking like a heart attack in a lasagna dish, accompanied by tortillas. Essentially it's a build your own Taco Bell mexi-melt but extra greasy. Damn tasty and spicy. I was literally choking on the cheese. You might imagine all that grease would have made it slide right down. Did I mention the grease? The food came out pretty quick along with my second drink. She ordered the Chicken Fundito burrito. To start with.... There is sliced cheese (Kraft singles) on the top.... They don't go for flashy things like shredded cheese at Panch Villa. No sir, not round here! At least the chicken has a nice flavor. I ordered the steak fajitas. The meat is tender but a different flavor than the others in town. Actually it's more a lack of flavor. Unfortunately it was cooked up in some burnt sauce so the flavor is a tad burnt with a side of mehh. Over all- meh... Nothing to brag about. This place obviously has its regulars, but you probably won't see me here again. Don't get me wrong.... This place isn't bad.... It's just not good. I've been coming here for years, when the bar was smoking, then after the ban. I really like most of the items. Stardard tex mex, with some amazing traditional items. The chips and salsa are the best in town. The best! I usually order a milagro margarita called a Dawnarita-after the bartender, which is like 75 cents upgrade from the grande. Worth it! I usually eat vegetarian or seafood when I go there. I order off the combo menu or get a specialty when I'm going to treat myself. My all time favorite chilled soup: Coctail des camarones- a shrimp soup coctail, divine with the lime. The decor is what you could expect, slightly cheesy 80s to 90s booths, light mexican music in the background, and the wait staff is one of the best in town. It's a conundrum that you get better service here than at ORSO where the ticket prices are 2-3 times more. One of the best kept secrets, which isn't much of one when you hit it during lunch or right around 5.30PM. read more

First thing you notice about this place: no windows. Weird! I've been many times, sat at the bar, and ordered various Mexican plates. The style here seems to be very Tex-Mex (note: I don't consider this a bad word, like 99% of the internet). Meaning: big hot plate with piles of other stuff surrounding what you ordered, and a cylindrical box of tortillas. It also means you get free chips and salsa. Last time I was here I got some ala cart tacos from the back of the menu and they were just straight-up odd. They had big chunks of meat in them that had some sort of sweet, almost-teriyaki-esque glaze on them. Maybe it was just me though? I'm not really into sweet. Definitely stick to the plates/dishes in the center of the menu. read more
