I do love Serranos and they're some of the best Mexican food in town. This time we just had a wildly long wait in the drive thru for pancita tacos but the tacos were missing that something special about the pork belly that makes these tacos so delightful. They're also pricy. Like $60 ish dollars for 6 pancita tacos and a side of rice. This is still my favorite rice of all time though so paying a premium for good food is worth it. Fortunately for my husband whom chipotles are too spicy for, they did put the sauce on the side. read more

Trivia: Recipes for molcajete salsa start with the tomatoes, peppers, and garlic being what encore they are mashed down to a salsa? I was happy to see that the menu here is more like the Northern Lights location than the 4th Avenue location. Mainly, they have the Southwest tacos here. But they were out of No Woman, No Cryo. That beer is a pretty big reason I choose this restaurant. On this visit, I tried a new salsa. Went with the molcajete, and it was tasty. Not a bit of salty. Full of flavor. Here's the rub: Chips and salsa are not complimentary at any Serranos. I always get them because the salsa is so good. But the chips are .... not great. And my tacos came out so fast, I didn't get much time to eat them. So I had a ton left. So I took them home. Cause, well 8 bucks. And, I made nachos with them. Weird thing happened. Oi. How the mighty have fallen. We went here on Valentines day and ordered from the special menu. Yikes. It was DISGUSTING. I was so disappointed because this is my neighborhood favorite- walking distance from my house, friendly staff, cool urban vibe, and typically excellent drinks. But not this time. My first drink tasted like soap, like they hadn't fully washed out the glass. For 16 bucks, I was not pleased. It also wasn't very good overall regardless. The 2nd Sandia margarita was rancid and I had to send it back. They tried to convince me maybe it was just underripe watermelon. No, I know the difference. I usually love their margaritas, but this was gross. They did refund my money, but it ruined my meal. And the special I got was overcooked, EXTREMELY greasy and the dipping sauce was a bowl of literal unflavored melted lard. Absolutely disgusting. And they forgot my salsa. My rice was also cold. My husband loved his special, which is the reason for the 2 stars. I'm sure I'll be back because this is not typical for them. I am usually happy with their offerings. Walked in at 10:15 PM for a quick to-go order (a burrito), knowing they close at 11 PM. The place was still semi-packed, yet I was immediately told by a BIG KID: "we're closed." No explanation, no courtesy .. just turned away. If you're going to stop serving customers well before your posted closing time, that needs to be clearly stated. The food is usually good and staff are wonderful so I was disappointed when the fajita burrito yesterday had hardly any meat and the little that it had was all chewy grisly. This is Serrano's second location (with a third location in the works, downtown). This location is a relaxed vibe in comparison. It's smaller than I imagined inside, and while the bar is captivating, the Frida mural is the definite highlight of this space. This Tudor location is noticeably male run while their midtown location is run mostly by females. Thankfully service was still attentive. Our orders came out fast and we were very happy with everything. We ordered their appetizer egg rolls, rib eye tacos, and their rice bowl. Lots of leftovers. My husband missed the mason jars we've grown to associate with Serrano's. We understand it was Cinco, and the plastic cups probably help with the large volume of drinks being purchased. Serrano's Horchata was A1 and both their cucumber and mango margaritas were perfection. They had a decent crowd but nothing like the madness their midtown location experiences on this holiday. I normally frequent the Serranos on Northern Lights, but moved to a different part of town so I thought the Tudor location would be the same quality. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the carnaza tacos, it was supposed to be brisket and all I got was huge chunks of fat. i ate the first taco, with confusion, the 2nd I picked out the fat and gave it to my husband, but by the 3rd taco, I was like what is wrong with this? it too was all fat. Huge disappointment for $25. What a waste. The tacos were tiny and there was no rice or beans. I will not be returning. read more

Been busy these days so drive thru from serranos sounded delicious. Ordered a salad and was delicious until I had to pull out a long hair and in result out came my few bites. When I had tried to call they were already closed. Working 12-24 hour shifts I couldn't come back the next day- I brought photos and the hair & receipt to show the meals I ordered was not consumed due to the hair. The manager stated I was lying and it was my hair and no matter what direction he was making every word argumentative and difficult to converse. After many minutes of being blamed I asked for a refund of just half, so I can leave and not hold up the line. He kept scoffing and shaking his head saying I am only now allowed a salad to be remade. I was kind of surprised of how this situation turned and was handled; I gave the salad to a homeless person on my way back home. This is a local take on "fast casual" (Qdoba/Chipotle/etc) Mexican fare, it's largely pretty good. My main beef(groan) is the lack of almost anything green (veggies) with this food. Just beans and rice. Where's the guac? The roasted chiles? Salsa fresca? Cabbage? The interior in here is bright and clean, almost too so. I gives it kind of a sterile appearance. The best thing about the Serrano's locations is their sauces. There are lots to choose from, and the hot sauces are actually hot. Too many Mexican places have two sauces: a chunky red salsa out of a can and a chunky red salsa out of can that has red pepper flakes added to it. (the "hot" one) Here, there are lots of sauces too chose from, of various colors and heat levels. Personally, I think these places are far superior than the local "King" chain. This was my first time here. Considering the menu options.. it's "Higher" end mexican cuisine with smaller portions compared to other mexican restos and the alcoholic cocktails on the menu are sooo small and pricey! The customer service was not great, my table of 5 seemed constantly rushed to pay or wanting to take our plates when we weren't finished, still nibbling and sipping our drinks trying to enjoy our dinner. Was also told the kitchen is closing and if we wanted to order anything else already.. 2 hours early?? Thus made us look at the time and even around us. Serrano's on Tudor is AMAZEBALLS!! Holy smokes man. See those refried beans? Yeah. They aren't your typical bullshit side of beans. These bad babies SLAP!! I dunno if they accidentally dropped a vat of bacon grease up in there or what but that flavor was incredible!! And the Serrano burrito was stupid good too. Did I mention they have a freaking drive thru??? Well they do. Not only was the lady at the window super nice, every single person in the kitchen was masked up properly and I watched them wash their hands multiple times. This is a low key fast casual restaurant. The menu is pretty extensive with a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, tacos, burritos and more. You order at the counter, get a number and your drink or cup, then get salsas and find a place to sit I was here on a Friday night around 6pm and four of the booths were full. Gave me time to look over the menu, as they were busy cleaning. Took my order quickly once I got their attention. I got the southwest eggrolls plus the avocado and tomato salad with carne asada. Took a good 10 minutes to come out, which surprised me for a salad and app at a quiet time, but the eggrolls ate freshly fried so that takes some time. Salsa bar needed cleaning. They had seven different salsas and jalapeños. The verde was standard with medium heat, the chipotle had a nice smoky flavor with medium heat, the hot had some strong heat. They were all good, better than usual food service salsas. Hibiscus lemonade was a nice choice on a warm day in the evening when you don't want caffeine, not too sweet but not super dry like some hibiscus drinks. Eggrolls has a great creamy filling of chicken, beans and corn. The wrappping is too thick though, felt like eating a bread roll. Salad had good fresh lettuce and avocado. Surprisingly good tomatoes for Alaska, and a generous amount of carne asada. The steak was cold, it would be more tasty if it was warm. While the food is not four star, the service added a star since they were so helpful. They gave me a box (not styrofoam!) and a bag and utensils for my leftovers, plus I was able to get some salsas in to go containers. Great service. They have renovated the interior dining area from the last time I visited. A bar was added, big screen TVs, large air work, etc. The staff was friendly but lacked service towards the end. My dish was difficult to finish, too salty and hard to digest. The menu price was too much averaging around $15+. Once we were done, we waited too long for our ticket. Employees didn't recognize that we have been waiting and so I had to go up to pay. While paying the employee seemed bothered by me coming up to pay. Let me start by saying I live in Texas and commute to AK for work. I have high standards for Mexican fare. I'm very impressed with this place! I love that this is very much a scratch kitchen. I used to visit Toluca often and the tacos here remind me so much of the street tacos I would get there. Please never get rid of the quesabirria and al pastor! Also, please find a way to get your glass bottle Topo Chicos back for ranch waters! Highly recommend! read more

My order was processed very quickly. I will have to say the staff was friendly and going through the drive through made it easier for pickup. I ordered the Cubano Sandwich which needed a slight modofication. I have eaten Cubano sandwhiches all over the world and added some sweet relish to create a more sweet taste based on what my experiences. I also ordered the street tacos (2 x Carne asada, 1 x chorizo, 1 x shrimp, 1 x Carnita) which were decent however; I needed to add seasoning (tajin) to enhance the taste of the tacos. Could be that this restaurant wants to be health conscious with individuals with salt issues or high blood pressure. I'm not sure but, I believe with some small modifications their food could be really great. read more

Updating my review again because the consistency just doesn't seem to be there. I tried the steak mucho macho plate (I might be misstating the name, but you'll recognize it). The portion of steak was generous, but it was both tough and bland. This is the main focus and it really needs to be better. Another visit since my last review, I had the torta and I was disappointed. The consistency and flavors were homogeneous and lacking and interest for the palette. The meat quality was poor and fatty. The staff is always friendly and there are always tables available. It is often on my way, so I'll probably try it again at this location. Super scrumptious! I ordered the chicken enchiladas with poblano sauce. The enchiladas were stuffed with moist chicken. The sauce was flavorful and the beans were yummy. My husband got the Cubano. The bread was nicely toasted but soft and pillowy. The meat was so delicious! The chorizo was slightly spicy. The pork was really moist as well. The fries were crunchy. Yet another place I live within minutes of that I didn't try for years. I was truly shocked by how nice it is inside the restaurant, and I love that I can pick up drive through! It is a bit dangerous to have this utterly delicious food that easily accessible though. I get the mucho macho plate with carnitas and it lasts two meals, which makes it very affordable, more so than fast food. The service is the only part I'm not as fond of, as I always feel a bit like I'm imposing or don't belong when I'm there. I've gone here a couple of times now, and have gone through the drive everytime. And everytime the woman taking my order has no customer service whatsoever, and always seems to have a attitude . Even if I 'm making it a point to smile and be nice. They have also also given me the incorrect order, and I didn't know until I got all the way home. So it's not Tequila Kitchen (previous sister to Serrano's) anymore. Fine, I'm familiar with Serrano's from they're Northern Lights location so I was eager to check out #2 after the change in name and menu. I'm not impressed. The food was lacking some serious flavor and thought. We got two Mucho Macho Dinners, one with chicken and the other with steak. The steak was very tough. The chicken was decent. Both were not seasoned but desperately needed it given how unappetizing the whole plate was. The rice was greasy and the beans were, as expected, just a pile of mush. The pulled pork sandwich was ok, the fries were the best part. We also ordered some guac... Mistake! It was just a mushed up avocado with some onion in it. No cilantro, no lime, no spice. What kind of guacamole is that!? You tell me. Service at the counter was sort of rude and made it unpleasant from the get go. Salsa bar is good, lots of variety. I'll skip Serrano's and opt for something a little more (Alaska) Mexican. 1 star for menu selection and good salsa 1 star for cleanliness read more

Great people, great service, great food (so far) and great salsa. My first time here and ordered a chimichanga. I was hoping to find pico de Gallo in the salsa bar but no such luck. What I did find tho is some great salsa that made up for it. I think I've found my Taco King replacement. The food taste fresher here and about the same price. Serrano's Mexican Grill is not authentic and is really quite gross. I got the rice bowl with steak and I was really confused on if I was eating Mexican or bbq. My boyfriend (who grew up in Cali and is Mexican) told me not to go here, and I should have listened. The sauce on the bowl was like a spicy bbq, and the beans left me wondering if they were more Smokey baked vs basic Mexican recipe. The rice was fluffy. Staff were friendly and service was fast. The restaurant was very clean. It didn't meet my expectation for Mexican, but I will say that this is my friend's favorite place and she really enjoys this joint. However this is low on my list. It gets 2 stars for not being great Mexican food. I probably won't go back. read more

Hands down the best mexican food in anchorage. They give great portions for reasonable prices and is also one of the few places I know that serves Horchata. On top of that their service is always spot-on and friendly. You can definitely tell that the people who run the place cook with love and dedication. It does take a little while for the food to come out but I promise you it's worth the wait. The shrimp burrito is an all time fav & their flan really hits the spot.
