The fiancé and I finished a long hike and decided to reward ourselves with Mexican food. We came to Xalos based on the excellent Yelp reviews (but really, the pics of birria tacos). I was expecting something more hole-in-the-wall (Mountain View has changed so much), but Xalos is an open space with lots of seating and a big menu. I couldn't decide on what to eat but went with the pork carnitas plate. Fiancé went with the birria tacos and we shared some guac and chips. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. The pork on mine was very tender and juicy and there was something about the flour tortilla that was different but very good. I seasoned it with their spiciest hot sauce (I could handle on its own, but accidentally ate a jalapeño right after...yikes). I honestly could have inhaled the whole plate but saved some for later. Fiancé is somewhat of a birria connoisseur, and while these weren't his favorite he enjoyed them. Xalos was a great find and good value for the price (a little over $50 for the two entrees and appetizer). I'd love to try their tacos on our next visit. read more

This is my go-to spot in town for posole. I've never dined in, only ordered take out. The portion is large with huge pieces of pork. It comes with limes, shredded cabbage, and diced onions and tomatoes on the side, plus tortilla chips. The staff are always friendly and the food is packaged well. I have never eaten anything else from their menu, but I highly recommend the posole. read more

I have been to Xalos a handful of times and they have been consistent in greatness each time I go. I am not a big guac fan (I know, I am a monster), but I really like Xalos guacamole. It has a lot of flavor and pairs well with their chips. I also had the quesa Birria taco plate for the first time and it was AMAZING. Where have these tacos been my entire life?!?! I can see that if you don't eat them right away, they may get a little soggy, so please enjoy them at the restaurant. The menu is HUGE and there are so many options. What I expected was a Qdoba or Chipotle style setup. What I received was a hybrid Mexican/Qdoba style setting. Let me explain, briefly. I was a little thrown off with ordering. You head straight to the cash register to order. They don't make your food as you order, which is a little confusing with the way the place is setup. Food: The carnitas plate. Obviously someone knows what they are doing. The carnitas were tender and juicy without being overly salted. There were some chunks of fat mixed in, but only a modicum. I've had other servings of carnitas with large, unruly chunks of fat. Not here. The black beans had just a tad more flavor making it also stand out a tad. The rice was pretty normal Spanish style rice. There was also a mini salad of sorts with lettuce, pico de gallo, and some guacamole. Service: Ordering behind the plastic screen is difficult. Between the kitchen noises, the music (which is authentic), and the screens, it's just hard. I totally get it, just be prepared to repeat yourself. Notables: No salsa bar was available. I'm not sure if they had cleaned it up early or if they are only doing little plastic containers. They have a sign with five types of salsa. They are included with your order. Stopped by for a late lunch. The restaurant sits in a complex so there is plenty of parking available. Also a large indoor and a couple of outdoor tables available. We first ordered and then sat down. You get a numbered placard that you place on the table to designate where you're sitting. The portions are huge, so a single dish can be shared between two individuals. Food was tasty and came out hot. We had ordered the vegetarian nachos, and the vegetarian burrito. It was a struggle to finish the food because there was so much. But overall, we left happy with stuffed stomachs. read more

The queso was disgusting, it tasted like mustard. I'm thinking they put jalapeño juice in the watered down cheese sauce. I tasted no cheese just a tart mustard taste. And the California Burrito has the same queso in it. So disappointed was hoping for a yummy bite after a long day of work. I ended up here purely by chance. I'm from California and love San Diego style Mexican food. The Carne Asada here is on par with some of the best places down there. I had a taco then had to go back and have nachos. Everything is fresh and extremely tasty. A very deep menu with lots of choices. Five different types of salsa and they were all great. If I ever make it back to Anchorage, I would honestly seek this place out. Extremely friendly and helpful staff and the restaurant is very clean. Food is very slow to serve. Also they asked if we wanted flower or corn tortillas. We said flower. I don't even know why they ask because they forgot tortillas on one order and provided corn for the other order. Customer service sucks just like every other place we have visited in Anchorage so I guess there is no need for improvement if everyone sucks. read more

I love this place. They are fast and fresh and delicious. I usually go around 6-7pm and it's not too busy after the dinner rush. I went for lunch the other day and it was slammed, every table full. There seemed to be a lot of business from JBER. I couldn't believe how fast they busted through the line of customers and your food came flying to your table soon after. The manager even came out to help with the massive amounts of orders pouring in. They are always super friendly. The salsa bar is fun and full of a nice combo of additional sauce/salsa you can add or take with you. I've had several different items from the menu and all have been delicious. Pick a type of meat (or not) your style of beans, and they make it immediately. The breakfast burritos are faaaaabulous and the Cinco de Mayo is the best burrito there. Tasty home made guacamole and they aren't shy with the portions. The steak, machaca beef, chicken, sausage, and chorizo are all lovely. Xalos Mexican Grill is a delicious fast-casual restaurant. It's my boyfriend's favorite place to go, being from California and from a big Mexican family, he is very particular with his flavors. I love big flavor, and fresh simple ingredients. This captures exactly this. I am gluten, dairy, and egg free and being authentic and family run allows for frontline knowledge of ingredients. I was able to order the Vegetarian burrito, Vegan, but with carna asada. Sounds so confusing I know - but it was perfect. Nutritious, full of flavor, so many veggies, with plenty of meat. My BF's dreamy looking burrito was drool worthy. I always imagine what it would be like to take a bite out of it. But my bowl more than made up for it. Shrimp cocktail was really good. Plump and juicy shrimp with chunky avocado, chopped tomatoes and onions. Just right amount of citrus flavors from the lime and chopped cilantro. My sis ordered the shredded beef supreme taco salad and was happy with her selection too. I was really pigging out as after I ate my shrimp cocktail I also had my mom's shrimp taco. It was ok, nothing exciting about the shrimp. But the corn tortillas were divine. House made corn tortillas. I would've been happy with just a stack of those to dunk in melted butter. Yummy. In Anchorage you won't find better, more authentic Mexican food. Finally, a Mexican owned restaurant in Anchorage that hasn't sold out! For some weird reason people have drawn parallels to places like Qdoba and Burrito/Taco King simply because you place your order at the counter and then it is delivered to your table. The similarities end there. Although I'm not crazy about the whole ordering at the counter aspect, its easy to overlook because Xalos food is high quality and delicious. 50 minutes before closing, we arrived to find the restaurant packed. We placed our order at the counter, and in less than 10 minutes our food arrived. In the interim we grabbed our beverages, utensils and perused the salsa bar. The salsa bar is AH-MAZING! Each item on the salsa bar is made in-house and utterly unique. I've noticed that here in Anchorage, all the salsas taste pretty much the same. But at Xalos the salsas are a symphony of color and flavor! There's a really interesting escabeche that's super spicy. My favorite was the green salsa (not tomatillo)... I've never had anything like it. It was soooo delicious whatever it was was. I think I'd like to take a bath in it though. No. That wouldn't work because then I would have to lick myself and that would be weird. Well, I'll figure out something. Another aspect I loved is Xalos has tons of visual interest inside and out. The colors, the art, the vibe are all very appealing. Diners inside may chose from standard seating or high tops. If the weather is nice, I recomment the lovely cafe tables on the patio surrounded by a sea of flowers. Obviously the food is right on. Tender delicious meats bedecked with lovely cilantro, onions, and tomatoes atop autentic corn tortillas. Oh yes. Nom nom nom. I was tempted to lick my plate. I hate guacamole (I know, I'm weird.) So I'll just lick around the weird green mush that everyone seems to love. I've also always kind of been ambivalent about refried beans, but I must admit they were quite tasty as well. Suprisingly, my favorite part of the meal besides the salsas was the rice, which was absolute perfection. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other items. Overall solid Mexican joint in a town filled with polarizing Mexican joints. I got a burrito here: it was wet and big. I enjoyed the range of salsas available; I just wish they had hotter options. Oddly Anchorage just doesn't seem to be into heat. I like the bright sunny ambiance in here and the big windows. Like most Anchorage eateries: it is located in a strip mall. The steak burrito was really good. I paid $11.95 for a regular size steak burrito, chips, and a drink. The order process is a little different from Qdoba/chipotle. Your option is the size of the burrito, type of rice, and beans. I didn't see the regular burrito ingredients on display like queso, pico de gallo, chopped jalapeno, etc. However, the homemade (avocado, chipotle, habanero) salsa was delicious. The habanero was not that spicy, maybe it's to accommodate the average patron. My co-worker ordered nacho cheese served on a medium size flat pizza pan. It looked delicious I almost ordered one for myself but had to return to work and didn't want the -itis. I would recommend this place to family and friends. read more

The service was disgusting. The young lady making the food was so rude to me. We are from out of state and we were looking at the menu lost trying to figure out what to order. She was in a horrible mood and it took an amazing customer who saw we were 1st timers So he recommended things to order. She was slamming food around and making it obvious she was not happy. When I got my chips I had no salsa lol I don't know who eats chips without salsa. When I asked for salsa the girl looked surprised and proceeded to tell me I didn't ask for salsa.
