The food is eclectic Mexican some of it Mexican fusion like one of my favorites their Birra egg rolls! Wanted to come here as I'd seen that they had Parmesan cilantro fries on the appetizer menu, and this was a new-to-me restaurant, and I love fries that are *extra* so I thought we'd give it a whirl. I would describe the interior as "spartan" and not really cosy. It didn't have that eclectic colourful look common to many Mexican restaurants, and nor were they playing the Mexican kind of music either. Tables and chairs were plain wood. Their large parking lot was full, however when we got inside, only one other table was occupied, so I'm not sure who was using their parking lot, but it wasn't diners. It was brightly lit though, and we got a table near the window so I could look outside. Considering only two tables were occupied, it took an inordinately long time for someone to come and take our order. I ordered the Southwest Tacos (crispy) and asked for ground beef, these were $5, I wasn't really sure how many would be served, and assumed possibly two? I also order the Parmesan cilantro fries to be my side. Husband got the Serrano's Burrito with carnitas, this came with rice and beans. We also ordered chips and salsa which was served immediately. There were lots of chips, 3 salsas and pico de gallo. The food came out very quickly, and our server was very nice. I got 1 taco (had I known I was only getting 1, I'd have paid extra to get 2) Ok, the positive - the fries were plentiful, and nice and crispy, but I was disappointed that the Parmesan was the kind out of a jar, that you shake on. I had built myself up to melted grated Parmesan, and I didn't find much cilantro either, and I love cilantro. Fortunately there was plenty in the salsa, and so I just dipped my fries in that. My taco was disappointing. The ground beef was bland, lacked seasonings, and the taco was just not very filled with things. He loved his Burrito, pronounced it delicious. I tried his rice and beans. The rice was decent, but the beans were too smooth and homogenous for my taste - I like them to have some lumpy bits of bean in. Another plus - they were playing really good music. Totally my taste (but not my husbands) as I like more modern music. Current tunes, stuff I'd have on my playlist in my car, to torture my husband with, so i liked that. Good. Had dinner with my bonus child to celebrate her 29th birthday and the only food we wanted were the shining star of Serrano's - pork belly tacos. Paired them with a margarita and ooo la la how delightful the flavors were on the palette. We sat at the bar so the service was bar-ish. It's pretty easy to find a seat on Friday night. We have been going every Tuesday for years now, but today was the worst experience ever. No water offered, silverware tossed on our table, and they refused to cook the quesadillas a bit more for one person in our party claiming that they were too busy because it is Cinco de Mayo. True, they were busy, but we are very patient and had plenty of time. Finally being forced to pay 20% tip for absolute shit service when we have to go to the bathroom to get "napkins" is completely unacceptable. Most of the servers are adorable but Mr. Manager's behavior today was unacceptable. Mr Manager, I'm the kind of customer that picks up paper from the bathroom floor in your restaurant to make it a better place for everyone, but you messed up tonight, big time. read more

Came here on a whim while picking up some camping supplies. They have what seems to be a drive through or maybe just a pickup window but that would be very convenient! The inside is beautifully decorated with separate areas for family dining and a "bar scene" I could absolutely see great family gatherings here along with a night out with the girls! My husband and I ordered the taco salad and the Serranos burrito. The taco salad was IMPECCABLE! So many flavors mixed together with the perfect crisp of the taco bowl UGH! The burrito was fantastic as well! Super cheesy and plenty big enough not to need an appetizer. The staff is incredibly friendly and easy going. We loved the relaxed earthy vibes. Off the mark for a sit down text Max's place. For starters chips and salsa will cost you eight bucks so I upgraded it and it went with the queso and chips for $20. I have no idea what's in the queso. It was like very little cheese and something else it was awful. The meat in my dish did taste good but everything else was just plain. The vibe of the place has no direction at all. There are TVs hanging everywhere like a sports bar but then dance club music plan and hard flat square wooden seating like at a barbecue place. I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. read more

All in all, this is a great place to try out. I didn't know about this Mexican restaurant until I visited for the first time this past week. The atmosphere was very nice and quiet, and the staff was great. The food, however, was overall decent. The queso was pretty good and had a nice presentation. The menu was surprising for a Mexican restaurant because it wasn't what you would typically expect. I got a Cubana sandwich, but I thought it was pretty boring--overall, just okay. From what I tried, I'd say the food was average, but I would still go back to see if there's something they cook really well. A couple weird things: they put cheese on top of the taco salad. Everyone knows that cheese goes over the rice, beans, n chicken right?! Cray cray. Egg rolls were delicious, it had juicy pork in it, dip your roll into both sauces, and make sure you have the pickled onion for each bite, yum! The chichrron ribeye OH EMMM, so good! I keep trying this place out, and keep thinking it's gross. At this point me going back is my own fault. Tonight's service was awful. We brought family member from out of state and her food showed up before ours.... So if you want a family meal, don't eat here. Mentioned it to the server, who then got sketch and basically ignored our table. We were done with our meal, and she was over chatting. Then once the entire table was cleaned, it took 20 mins to get check and leave. Food reminds us of fast food - but no fast food experience considering it took us almost an hour and a half to eat unimpressive food. Place was loud, music didn't help. I'm not sure why this place would not have a 5 rating. The ambience was very authentic and Mexi-vibe for sure with some class. The service was excelante. My regret is that I did not take pictures of the food, mostly because I was so famished. Chimichanga with carne asada was perhaps the best I've ever had. Crispy tacos turned out to be homemade and amazing as well. Avocado salad (my wife said) was good as well. First and probably last time in Anchorage, but this place is legit. Not a lot of salsa with the chips, small and annoying cups to dip in, and the salsa was mid. Not bad but could be better. Just stick to the old school free generic chips and salsa. Would not order this again. We got the asada fries. These were great but something in it was really cold, which messed with the warmth I really liked. All hot or all cold. Either way, would order this again. The chicken tortilla soup was bland as heck. Super brothy. Could have gotten better from an expensive can. Needs a lot more spices and consistency. Would not recommend this if you've had very good tortilla soup. Not sure why we had to pay more for chicken. Just serve chicken tortilla soup. Good food, good drinks, good service. While visiting family in Anchorage, they took me to all of their favorite food spots. This was our first stop, and I really enjoyed it. I chose a taco salad with grilled chicken. It was fresh with the perfect amount of toppings and meat. The salad was housed in a edible shell. My cousin got the shrimp salad and was very pleased. Plenty of shrimp and fresh veggies. She liked her drink as well. The restaurant is decorated in a rustic feel with wooden benches and tables. There are murals painted on the walls. There was a HUGE difference in comparison to the other location on Tudor Road. We visited this location on Cinco De Mayo. We started with a few margaritas: House, scratch, and mango. They were good! The queso dip came out watery, but the flavor was amazing and made for a great dipping sauce for the egg rolls! The Pastor Egg Rolls were so delicious that we ordered it again. The dipping sauce could have been better, but the pickled onions were a good pairing. The ambiance was inviting and fun. Salsa should dominate the show at a Mexican restaurant. Chips come in at a close second. On the salsa front, Serrano's is killing it. They have a variety of salsas to choose from and they are all delicious. Personally, I have greatly enjoyed the Verde, the mild, the hot, and the chipotle. The chips, however, are a slight disappointment. Maybe disappointment is too strong. Let down? They are not the light, flaky chips I have come to love at authentic Mexican locale. They are mix between a corn chip and a tortilla chip. It's hard to explain. And it is not my favorite. The biggest let down of all? There is no complimentary salsa and chips. It seems almost criminal to have so many tasty salsas. If you want that chips and salsa plate pre meal, you have to order the appetizer. On the bright side, it does come with a choice of three salsas. So if you like it hot and your partner likes it Verde, and you both want to try the raspberry habanero, go for it! It appears that they have some sort of deal with Midnight Sun because three of the beers they have on tap are brewed exclusively for Serrano's. Ask the bartender for a sample. The hatch chili IPA complimented my meal very nicely. The entrees have always been delightful. I dig their enchiladas, their tacos (especially the specials, when they have them) and the carnitas on the torta. The queso was very appetizing and a great portion. I'm not sure when they renovated it's been like a couple of years since I been back but I LOVE the ambiance of the new spot. Everything is different now. Before we would order and thn take a seat and they'd bring our food but now it's a sit down and dine. I don't like that there wasn't anyone to greet us when we first came in but our server was amazing and she was so sweet & patient. The food to be honest was mediocre Mexican for me. Very Tex-Mex & that's okay if that's what you prefer. I tried carne asada, ground beef, and chicken street tacos. If I were to go again I'd try the shrimp one and stick with the chicken. Carne Asada was dry. The fried ice cream looked pretty but there was too much batter for my taste and doughy. I did appreciate the taco rack they had. My niece and sister ordered street tacos too but didn't have a rack lol. Let me tell you if you like dressing your own tacos up like me this came in handy. Ordered the Menudo Soup. After taking several bites I noticed what looked like an eyelash in the soup. I pulled it out. On closer inspection, I pulled more and more hair out, then whole pieces of infested menudo. It became increasingly clear that the soup was riddled with hair. Absolutely foul. Server was informed there was hair in my soup. She stated she would speak with the manager. Soup was removed from the table before I thought of taking a photo and I was not charged for it. I called after leaving to follow up with a manager. I wanted to confirm that they would not serve the batch of soup I was given to others until a new batch was prepared. It should go without saying but I wanted to confirm. Manager stated they would NOT pull the soup and would continue to serve it. This has already been discussed with the kitchen manager and it was stated that it is perfectly safe and not uncommon to find hair in the soup.....??? No.. This is not normal at all but a complete failure in quality control. Per the manager, that is how they accept the menudo from the vendor, covered in hair, to be used for the soup they prepare in house... Pot full of hair. As they want to pass the blame off to the vendor, ultimately Serrano's still made the choice to move forward in using and serving this to customers while being fully aware this was a reoccurring issue. This goes beyond, I found a hair in my food. Riddled with animal hair, and no intention of correcting the problem at all. Begs the question what the rest of their sanitation and food safety standards are for the rest of the menu items. Bummer. read more

Best Mexican food I've found in Anchorage so far. Midtown location has more authentic options like menudo, birria tacos, lengua-especially on the weekends. Margaritas tasted home made, rice and beans seasoned well. Able to accommodate a large group at lunch and left us alone just enough so we could really take our time and chat. The restaurant is decorated tastefully and modern with bar seating and outdoor seating as well. My only negative feedback is that while food came out super fast (which is great for lunch service) my food was actually a bit cold. Best Mexican Resturant in Anchorage. The food is so flavorful and exquisite. Our first time, we were served by Nicholas who went over and beyond to make sure we were taken care of with extra care. The Ambiance is modern, hipster-ish ( which is a major reason I love this place), also offering an outdoor setting and a firepit. Pleasantly surprised to see a good Mexican restaurant in Anchorage! I really liked the interior- spacious, well lighted and clean, plenty of indoor plants and wall art! Great indoor option for large groups. We were 6 and had lunch there. We got the house margaritas ($10), which were nice but slightly inconsistent- the second round tasted little different. Tacos were good. Priced at $4.75 each (we tried chicken and shrimp), there was plenty of meat. I would have loved some salsa on them though. You can get a side of beans and rice for ~$4. Other people in our group had the chicken enchilada, taco salad with fajita veggies and the chicken rice bowl. I think the rice bowl was the clear winner in the main course and other items were also good overall. I tried the flan for dessert and it was exceptional! It was served with delicious chocolatey caramel sauce and whipped cream. The only real disappointment was the guacamole and chips, guac seemed old and chips were meh.
