From the moment I walked in, I was captivated by the southwestern colors and decorations, the smell of generic Mexican/American cuisine, and the gently lilting tones of a middle-aged Latin-x crooner wowing the laid back Friday night crowd with a passable rendition of "Oye Como Va", a Santana classic. Were it not for the fact that Santana is one of my late father's most favorite musical acts didn't have rotating tap.M, I might have enjoyed the raucous bassline that was motivating exactly nobody to dance, as the keyboard playing and vocals were mediocre at best. The mediocrity continued. Let's start with the fact that the restaurant has very large windows and no shades whatsoever. This fact made it necessary for me to switch places with the couple I was dining with, as they were not equipped with either baseball hats or sunglasses (I had to wear both to be comfortable) Now to the menu! I swear, if you have had the somewhat dubious pleasure of dining in nearly any of the mid-range Mexican restaurants in this town, you could probably recite this menu blind. The only thing that might have been a surprise would have been the rotating tap beer that they didn't have. Next came the service: perfunctory, with an accent, and a distinct lack of attention to the very basic detail that the female member of the couple I was dining with only ordered a single shrimp taco and beans and rice a la carte. The server then politely informed her of the option to not consume the other taco. Brilliant, she wished she had thought of that, oh wait, she did when she order a single shrimp taco. The server then proceeded to mistake limes for lemons (ordered to accompany the tea). She did smile graciously at my pronunciation of Sopapillos, so there is that. Guess 5 years of Spanish paid off when she politely informed me that they had none. I mean, I guess it was exactly as expected?

Ok, Mexican restaurants seem very "much of a muchness" and I've yet to find one I hate, or yet again, one that I absolutely rave about. Having read the reviews prior to coming, I was dubious. But I've rarely had bad Mexican food, so we decided to give it a whirl. The interior is quite nice, we got a very nice corner booth, which is appreciated on date night. Chips and dip were instantly served, and drinks order taken, I ordered a Chile relleno, a tamale, and french fries. He got a cheese enchilada dinner The fries were good and crispy, tamale was good comfort food, and the Chile relleno was also ok, but i found the egg batter, very eggy, and overwhelmed the flavour of the whole relleno, and not the best I've had. If it's any indication, I didn't leave any, so it couldn't have been that bad. The service was outstanding though.

I needed to fuel up after a long night. So the table next to me and my friend said get their Chicken and Rice Soup. I did and and it was a big portion and very tasty. Hit the spot. Loaded and I mean loaded with chicken! While we were waiting we snacked on a cheesy chicken quesadilla and of course the gratuitous chips and salsa we replenished multiple times - oooh spicy Salsa!

I have yet to have a bad experience here. Every time I come the food is consistent. It's a nice size restaurant with simple Mexican decor. The booths are pretty big and spacious. There is two sides the the restaurant, but I've only ever been seated on one side. The other side has TVs. I'm assuming it's a party room, but it's really crazy that they're only one one side instead of throughout the restaurant. The service has never been bad based on every visit I've made here. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. They don't even correct your pronunciation here. I have ok Spanish, but my husbands is a disaster. I always laugh, but they never do. Just smile and listen. The food is always fresh. There's only been one time I felt like my food had been sitting and that's when I ordered the children's (which should be listed as an adults because it's huge) cheeseburger plate. I know, a cheeseburger at a Mexican restaurant, but my son had it twice and he was raving about how good it was. And it was good. My fries were cold though. Punishment received. Other than that, it's always hot and tastes fresh. My only gripes about this place are the tv situation and that you only get one refill when you buy a soft drink. Like, what?! All these fresh chips and hot salsa, then your food comes and you're expected to only have two cups of soft drink before paying for another?! That's crazy to me. I'm a rare drinker so I haven't had a drink there, but the tiajuana Taco is amazing!!

I decided to give this place another chance after being away for almost two years after the terribly long wait a friend and I had to endure along with the lackluster food. Fortunately, things were a lot better for us this time around when we came in for lunch earlier today. We arrived at the restaurant around 12:30PM. When we walked in, the place was mostly empty. However, we were acknowledged quickly at the door by a host who directed us to a booth by the window and took our drink orders right away. A minute later, a friendly waitress greeted us and gave us menus to look over until we were ready. My friend decided to order the Chile Rellenos combo while I decided to try something a little more unusual with the Pollo Fundido (a large burrito deep-fried filled with cream cheese, shredded chicken, and topped with a dollop of sour cream and a slice of melted cheese). By that time, other diners started pouring in and the lunch rush was well under way. Unlike our last visit, our orders arrived within a very reasonable time frame of 10-15min. My friend enjoyed her Chile Relleno which had plenty of melted cheese sprinkled on top as well as the refried beans. The Pollo Fundido was delicious. The cream cheese and the shredded chicken made for a unique flavor combination to go with the burrito's crispy texture. I ordered a side of fresh guacamole that enhanced the flavor of the chicken and was also a good addition to the complimentary chips and salsa that came to our table earlier after we arrived. The service this time around was a lot more efficient and sincere. I was happy to give this place a second chance knowing that this location has been around for many years since 1990 and has its share of devoted customers.

I would describe the interior as "spartan" and not really cosy. It didn't have that eclectic colourful look common to many Mexican restaurants, and nor were they playing the Mexican kind of music either. Tables and chairs were plain wood. Their large parking lot was full, however when we got inside, only one other table was occupied, so I'm not sure who was using their parking lot, but it wasn't diners. It was brightly lit though, and we got a table near the window so I could look outside. Considering only two tables were occupied, it took an inordinately long time for someone to come and take our order. I ordered the Southwest Tacos (crispy) and asked for ground beef, these were $5, I wasn't really sure how many would be served, and assumed possibly two? I also order the Parmesan cilantro fries to be my side. Husband got the Serrano's Burrito with carnitas, this came with rice and beans. We also ordered chips and salsa which was served immediately. There were lots of chips, 3 salsas and pico de gallo. The food came out very quickly, and our server was very nice. I got 1 taco (had I known I was only getting 1, I'd have paid extra to get 2) Ok, the positive - the fries were plentiful, and nice and crispy, but I was disappointed that the Parmesan was the kind out of a jar, that you shake on. I had built myself up to melted grated Parmesan, and I didn't find much cilantro either, and I love cilantro. Fortunately there was plenty in the salsa, and so I just dipped my fries in that. My taco was disappointing. The ground beef was bland, lacked seasonings, and the taco was just not very filled with things. He loved his Burrito, pronounced it delicious. I tried his rice and beans. The rice was decent, but the beans were too smooth and homogenous for my taste - I like them to have some lumpy bits of bean in. Another plus - they were playing really good music. Totally my taste (but not my husbands) as I like more modern music. Current tunes, stuff I'd have on my playlist in my car, to torture my husband with, so i liked that. Good. Service, after initially waiting a while, and food came out fast after we ordered + decent music. Food could be improved though.

We took it back to our Airbnb and we repurposed and used the leftover food into new dishes for breakfast the next day. Was this the best Mexican food ever.... well no, but it wasn't horrible. I got the Chile Verde Burrito and it was good. I think that the dishes were basic and there was nothing that took it over the top. Nothing special, no different seasoning. Even though we didn't finish the food, we ordered dessert and shared. The flan.....OMG! Yes, yes, yes! I would go back for the flan. It tasted like it had coconut, but when we asked they said that it didn't. Hmmm, not a bad thing that it tasted like coconut in my world, it just elevated the taste.

I usually wouldn't eat Mexican food in Alaska those two don't really go together in my brain being from California but I wanted to give it a try anyway lol I ordered the Cilantro Shrimp Molcajete and some chips and salsa on the side. First I will say I don't see why certain restaurants charge for chips and salsa it should be free in my opinion. The salsa lacked flavor and was more sweet than anything. (I asked for the spiciest salsa they have) and the order was $8.. I get it for the size I was surprised but that salsa wasn't good. Moving on to the main dish tho we have the Molcajete which was really good in my opinion. It came out SIZZLING! and the size of it wasn't what I was expecting. So if you're hungry I would def get one of those entrees ! The flavor of the fajita mix was good and the amount of shrimp you get was super filling. That dish was about $38 with the shrimp. The bartender was nice and asked me if I was doing okay a few times and also made sure my water was filled which was great he seemed really knowledgeable of all the good food recommendations and was pretty quick with service so employees were cool ! All in all I enjoyed my early dinner in a nice place that played good Latin music and I liked that it's walking distance from my hotel. I would eat here again one day and try some of their tacos next because I hear they are pretty good. I would say they need to just make the chips free because the are NOT worth $8 lol like at all but other then that decent place.

The decor works really well, but I found the branding a bit confusing. The menu leans heavily on Mexican flavors, but the restaurant doesn't really call itself a Mexican place, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. On my first visit, I had the duck confit tacos with an Eddie's Tropical drink. The tacos were amazing, tender and full of flavor, and the drink was perfectly balanced. On my second visit, I got the rockfish tacos. They were tasty but way too spicy for me, which took away from the flavor. We also tried guacamole and queso fundido on both visits. The guac was solid, nothing fancy but good. The queso fundido is super cheesy and greasy, and once it cools down, it's tricky to eat. I've learned my lesson there. Service was mixed. The first visit, our server was okay. The second time, the server was excellent, very friendly and attentive. Both visits we had reservations and were seated right away, even during tourist season, which was a nice surprise. Overall, Tequila 61 is a beautiful spot with some standout dishes. The duck confit tacos are a must-try. Some dishes could use a little work, but the atmosphere, drinks, and high-end feel make it worth a visit. Just watch out for the spice and maybe share the queso fundido with a few friends.
