Attended a retirement party for a co-worker here and was genuinely impressed with the new Jalapeños location in Eagle River. The building is beautiful, with thoughtful interior décor and convenient elevator access to the second floor where our event was held. The food was good, and the service was solid even with a large group. Although the space felt a little tight for the number of people we had, the staff managed it well and stayed attentive. Overall, it's a great addition to Eagle River and a nice option for events or group gatherings. read more

For being in Alaska, this Mexican food is alright. We came during a lunch time on a week day so it wasn't too crowded. The restaurant was decorated nicely and it wasn't too loud inside. The enchiladas had good flavor and the queso dip was good but should be eaten quickly otherwise it will solidify and be difficult to put chips into. The Blue Skies is questionable though. I have had many alcoholic drinks in my time but I don't think I've had one that's tasted like a mix between pool water (chlorine) and cleaner...I'm not sure if it was a bad mix or what happened but that's not a drink I'd order again. I'm surprised to downgrade my feelings on Jalapeño's since they've opened their newly built location. I'm torn on 3 or 4 stars now, but due to the snark from a couple employees the last couple of times, I'm downgrading to three. While the new space is attractive, being seated in one of the giant rounded booths with another couple is very unfortunate. We had difficulty talking because we felt like we were seated with two strangers. Admittedly, going back another time, we were willing to wait a little while to avoid this again since trying to sit upstairs with sports on the tv was extremely loud and we wouldn't have been able to talk. While all the new dinnerware is beautiful, getting meals on two plates is a bit cumbersome, especially at a small table. Dinner for four and there sometimes being two plates in front of you, one of which is just beans and rice is odd... I'm good with it touching my tacos rather than having two giant plates and having to reach to eat. We always order queso... and since the move and new plating method, we have had to ask for chips every single time. While I know we get chips and salsa at seating, queso always takes long enough for the chips to be mostly gone. All of the servers have been great... expediters not as much. They did away with their coupon that has been on yelp for more than 6 years and admittedly, that makes it less intriguing to go. It truly did help make decisions on where to go. read more

The booth we were in made sense, however looking around I am grateful we didn't get seated in some of their other options as they just didn't have adequate room for food and were slightly illogical. The food is bland, almost no flavor whatsoever. My father-in-law got chicken tacos, my husband ordered birria tacos (our favorite anywhere we go), and I got steak fajitas. None of us were pleased with the flavor of the food. The salsa was quite flavorless as well, even the "hot" which was the similar heat level, just with a smokier flavor profile. Additionally, you are charged for extra chips and each soda refill. We had a very small handful of chips in the first basket. I understand businesses need to make profit, however it seemed quite excessive in my opinion. We will not be returning, nor will we be recommending it. read more

I've tried reaching out to the restaurant several times in reference to my dining experience on 3/28 and have not received a call back. Here is my review: I'm very disappointed by my experience here on March 28th. Before ordering, I clearly told the server multiple times that I have celiac disease and need my food handled as a gluten allergy. I specifically ordered corn tortillas because I believed they would be the safe option as instructed by the server. Unfortunately, the kitchen was not informed that the tortillas were for a gluten allergy/celiac-related medical restriction. I became very sick during the meal (turns out the sauce had flour aka gluten) and ended up going to the hospital afterward. Because my symptoms started so quickly, our friends had to leave early with us, which completely interrupted and ruined their dinner and drinks as well. I'm sharing this because I hope management takes it seriously. This is not about placing blame -- it's about making sure staff are properly trained on celiac disease, gluten allergies, and cross-contamination. When a customer clearly communicates a serious medical dietary restriction multiple times, that information must be passed to the kitchen and handled correctly. Beautiful rooftop and great summertime ambience -- Jalapeños in Eagle River really nails the vibe. Cocktails are well-made (just on the pricey side), and the rooftop is worth a visit for a drink. That said, the food has been a major disappointment. Chips and salsa are just OK -- the salsa could use more flavor -- and after several visits and trying different dishes, we haven't had a single entree we'd call good. The mains feel overpriced for the quality, so at this point we only come for drinks and the occasional appetizer (and even those have left us underwhelmed). If you're looking for a nice rooftop cocktail spot, this is a solid choice. If you want a reliably good meal, I'd keep looking unless the kitchen steps up its seasoning and portion/value. read more

Sadly very disappointed overall. When I think of Mexican flavors there should be bold spices along with some heat. (We are not burn my tongue with heat people.) I look for a layering of flavors that will tantalize each area of my pallet. I'm sorry to say, this was a one note flavor of bland experience! The first flavor of the salsa was water, which describes the flavors..,watered down! The cheese dip was bland at best! And! When the dip was brought to our table. I had to ask for chips to go with it! The most enticing flavor of the fajitas was the char on the skillet. I asked for the steak to be cooked, medium and got it as jerky....way overcooked as was the chicken as well! I find it ironic that in trying to get more flavor we had to ask for diced jalapeños twice...this in a Mexican restaurant named "Jalapeños" As far as the service went... Well, we felt like we saw the bust-boy pass our table more than we saw our waitress Needless to say. I would not recommend this restaurant and will not be going back. read more

A little wait when we showed up but not too long, less than 10 minutes. The restaurant is very clean as well as the bathroom Pom's! Food was really good but $20+ for three tacos seemed pricey. Margaritas were absolutely delicious but again expensive. The Paloma was not great at all but looked very pretty. Kudos to the servers and wait staff though who took the drink away and off our bill for us. Very professional and understanding. They also checked in frequently which I like because I never had an empty glass! Great experience, but was it worth the price? I would return for date night drinks. read more

Wow! Their new location is a dramatic improvement in every way. I'm not sure if they updated the menu, but at the new location it seemed more polished and refined. Our actual food reflected this, with improvements in quality in our dishes from past visits at the old location. Even our drinks seemed better and more craft like. The ambiance is very nice and pleasantly upscale & classy but still with a casual flair. Staff were top notch from the minute we were greeted at the door. Our server, Robin, was friendly and so attentive. She took great care of us and was the icing on the cake. Overall a vast improvement all around. Hope they keep it up! read more

Tonight I experienced really great customer service by mads. She was checking in often, made sure our food and drinks were appetizing and fresh. She was constantly asking if there was anything else we needed. My girl and I eat around town all the time. This was our first time here and it was the best experience I had in Alaska in my 25 years. I try to take time out when we experience great customer service, because the bad service seems so common now a days by other places. This is the best spot and I'll be back 100 times over. They were small and we were asked if we'd like refills... We all got one not knowing each pour is 3.75. got the bill and $30.00 in soda. No mention that refills aren't free. We used a gift card we purchased to support the restaurant during the pandemic and the rest of the bill in cash. Visited the new restaurant this week so I thought I would update my review as it is different experience now. The dining room is beautifully decorated, lively, comfortable. Bar area 10/10, wish it was larger. The menu seems more focused which in my opinion is great-could be even smaller. Drink prices have gone up but my beer was ice cold, margaritas tasted like a craft cocktail I would expect, much different than before. Overall the food was good. I noticed a few people ordering American comfort foods-burgers, fries, chicken fingers...adults not kids. To each their own but I wouldn't go to a Mexican restaurant and get a burger. Chips and salsa were excellent, rice was tasty, service was excellent. Glad to have a more upscale option for Tex-mex restaurant in Eagle River. read more

I made a review 10 days ago. It was a 1 star. My wife and I haven't been back but my daughter is home from college until December and she went to the new location with her friends last night. I wish she would have told me she was going there ahead of time but unfortunately she did not and she had an awful experience for a very high price tag. She was with a group of 3 young ladies. My daughter had an adult drink and an entree. She shared a fried ice cream with her friends and her bill was $60. She complained her service was slow, food was cold, and they charged the girls for the extra servings of chips they ate while waiting an hour for their food. They asked for a manager to remove the up charge on the extra chips and tell her about the long wait as well as the cold food. She refused and sounds like she was condescending to my daughter. The description my daughter gave me matches the same gargantuan woman who refused to move my wife and I to a less crowded and cleaner area. Heather is her name. I will be back one more time and it won't be to eat the mediocre overpriced food. I will be back to have some words with Heather who accused my daughter who's currently enrolled in law school at Stanford she couldn't read the menu properly and doesn't understand math. Heather made mentioned she's a full time employee at "Anchorage Schools" and per my daughter's report made her feel like she was giving her a lesson. My daughter took the $4 extra she was charged for chips off the top. That's the real math lesson here. Plus that's 3 more people who won't be back.
