To start, the service her was top-notch. From the friendly greeting to the water girl to the servers, everyone seemed to genuinely care that we have an enjoyable experience. The chips arrived hot, and the salsas (hot and mild) were the real deal. Ask for the green salsa, too, as it goes beyond the normal salsa verde, and it is really, really good. My husband and MIL ordered the Halibut Tacos ($26.50), and these were surprisingly just okay. The halibut itself was great, but there wasn't any sort of sauce with the tacos, which left the taco as a whole coming across as somewhat bland. My son ordered the Acapulco Dinner ($29.95), which contained shrimp, crab meat, chicken breast, cream sauce, tomatoes, avocado, and cheese, served with tortillas. He loved it. I ordered the Seafood Fundido ($28.50), which is a deep-fried specialty made up of shrimp and crabmeat, jalapeño cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and pico. Naughty, but so good!! I wish we would have been able to try their margaritas, as I'm sure they're amazing. However, we had a long drive ahead of us, so we settled with water, which was kept refilled I recommend this restaurant, and I'd happily return. read more

We came here for a third time and the chips didn't seem as fresh unfortunately. I also got a cucumber strawberry margarita on the rocks and it was good, although there were a lot of cucumber seeds in it and I wouldnt recommend. I just need to stick to the classic and maybe ended. There wasn't a lot of liquor or flavor. Again I got the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. Their sauce is very flavorful! Maybe my 4th to E around I'll actually try something different, but with a classic margarita blended with salt. Coming back from camping in Eklutna, we stopped in Eagle River for lunch. Chepo's is actually a very nice place on the inside, and has a conservatory to eat in, but there's also outdoor seating too. We sat inside, at a booth by a window. Our server was delightful, very happy. I like when they seem to enjoy their job. I ordered a Taco Salad with Ground Beef, he claims he ordered enchiladas, but i doubt his claim. The ubiquitous chips and salsa came out super fast. The spicy salsa burned my lips, so i went easy on it, and in fact i didn't eat many chips and salsa, because i hate when i ruin my appetite, and am presented with an enormous plate of food. It was in fact, an enormous Taco Salad, and his enchiladas (?) was a very large plate too. I certainly cannot find fault with portion sizes. My Taco Salad was topped with about 10oz of Daisy, a humongous dollop, i can never eat it all. The ground beef was savoury, and really good and the taco shell crisp and moreish. I always want to binge on it, but i tried my best to stick with the meat and greens, and occasionally break off some of the crispy shell and make a nacho with it. Really nice Taco Salad. I cannot find anything to complain about. Blake enjoyed his enchiladas (?) but neither of us could finish our entire meal. A Delightful Dining Experience...in the best Alaskan version of Mexico! This past Tuesday, members of my social group and I visited Chepo's for the first time in a few years. We were extraordinarily pleased with all of our experience. When we're not having picnic dinners at Eagle River's Park at the End of End Street...also known as Schroeder Park...during South Central Alaska's short summer, we're trying various restaurants every first, third, and fifth Monday (Tuesday this week only). We've been to several Mexican restaurants in the area over the years...and enjoy lots about them...but they've all pretty well become very noisy so that conversations don't stand a chance. Not so Chepo's! The first thing I noticed as I entered Chepo's was the quiet...like a friendly family dinner table. The place is lovely as well...check out their website at https://www.cheposak.com/ for photos. To our great pleasure, we were invited to proceed down three stairs...a little challenging for a couple of us with ambulation challenges, but worth it...into their solarium. The play of sunshine and cloud almost surrounding us through the glass wall and roof made the sky seem alive and provided a glorious backdrop to our evening. Then we met Moses, our waiter extraordinaire. Had the sun not been as bright as it was, I'm sure his smile would've lit the room for us. His service was impeccable. Two of us arrived before the others and found ourselves attentively checked on by Moses and others of his compadres. He answered several questions about various menu offerings...I didn't know what a Palermo pepper was. Moses was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive...exactly the right combo for a world class mesero. The menu was exciting...full of options including and beyond the usual American Mexican restaurant fare. One of our party was glad to find Chepo's had a good non-alcoholic beer...I forgot the brand...and especially happy to find mole...a rich dark chocolatey color with only a hint of chocolate flavor and a nice combination of other spices. The other two had nachos and chili rellenos and enjoyed them thoroughly. They both stayed with water to drink...Anchorage's water is often rated as some of the best tasting in the country, after all. I was the outlier. I arrived with an apetito grande...note my profile headline. Though I did look quickly through the regular menu, the specials menu had me from the start. I had a bowl of creamy Palermo pepper soup garnished with corn. I might have enjoyed just a bit more corn...but, then I'm a bit of a corn-a-holic. It was delectable...smooth and creamy with a very distinct Palermo flavor that I had never tasted before. My main dish was brisket enchiladas. The brisket was done to perfection...one might think covering brisket with other food items might hide its unique savorysmoky flavor, but this was not the case. What made the dish extraordinarily tasty for me was the grilled onions...perhaps there were peppers on it too? The concoction had been prepared to just the right amount of cooked before and then must have been cooked some on the enchiladas themselves, because it was truly sautéed...neither raw onion pieces nor mush...and the flavor permeated the enchiladas through and through. Lastly, one of my favorite contributions of Mexican cuisine...are drinks considered part of "cuisine?"...to the world is horchata. Several of the Mexican restaurants in the area serve it, much to my delight. But Chepo's horchata was the best I've ever had. It's characteristic vanilla flavor was strong...it tasted almost like vanilla ice cream...and it was creamy. It was served in one of the largest glasses I've ever had. Also...something I was warned by one of my dinner companions not to share with the restaurant...it was the cheapest of all horchata I've had in all local restaurants by two dollars, if I remember the others' prices correctly...$3.99 a serving. So, if you find yourself up here in the Greatland, craving a taste and experience from south of the border, you must head on over to Chepo's in Eagle River. Just went here for lunch and I have to say this place is AMAZING!! The service that Claudia provided was excellent, she had the best personality and was so friendly that coming from Anchorage to Eagle River to eat is so worth the trip for the service and the food. The food was wonderful and I think their prices are from 10 years ago, with saying that.. compared to other restaurants I really think their prices are cheap . The quality of the food is Excellent!! My only issue is I was on lunch so I wasn't able to to try a margarita so I will definitely be back to try one. read more

Of the big four Mexican restaurants in Eagle River, Chepo's is our hands down favourite, thus far (We only have one more to try). The staff here are always terrific, especially Nicki. They have all the classic dishes, in a charming atmosphere that's not terribly loud or complicated. We like to sit in the sunroom. All glass windows and ceiling, it's like being in a solarium with people not plants. There's plenty of parking and the eatery is always clean, including the restrooms. My fish tacos came out in fish chunks (so interesting) with no flavor, no cheese & just wasn't what I was hoping for at all. My bf's food was ordered medium and it came out almost raw in the middle. It was a lot so I was happy that I got to take some home and have it the next day multiple times. wife got cheese enchiladas they were great. Let me start by saying that Chepos has been my fav for over 25 years. Sadly we went for lunch today (Eagle River), and neither of us finished half our food even. The chips were cold, the mild salsa had no flavor, the green sauce tasted off, and our server seemed pretty indifferent to us. My food had more of a chilli/ Tex-Mex taste to it which I do t eat as it upsets my stomach. So, here I sit, stomach has been sour for hours now. Really disappointed in this place. It was my "go to" Mexican place for a few years. I would drive from anchorage to eagle river just for the food here. The last two visits have been very disappointing. Today we came here as a "last attempt" try. And I regret it. Service- it took us 43 minutes to get our appetizer. Our appetizer was chips and queso. And then an additional 30 minutes for our food: mini tacos and a chimichanga. The ground beef in the tacos was cold to touch and the chimichanga was ordered as chicken and brought to the table as shredded beef. The bartender was also the server... of SEVEN tables 3 of them with over 6 people each. I'm pretty easily satisfied if you refill my drink, but even that took over 10 minutes to do. Our previous experience we very similar. Cold food, wrong food and little to no service. The bartender/ server is very friendly, but management needs to figure out their staffing. One person at a weekend lunch rush isn't okay. Surprisingly they don't have a "now hiring" sign which makes me think they believe they have all the staffing needed. read more

DON'T EAT HERE!!!!The behavior of the owner's friends made me so nauseous that when I went to eat my dry and salty burrito I could not find the appetite to take more than a single bite. The owner Lucia did not take any accountability for allowing this CHILD to be harassed and assaulted while she sat right across the table from the perpetrator. She did not step in to deescalate the situation, but instead she egged on her friend's behavior and joked about her employee quitting/suing after the interaction. Comments that were made to the young man were the following: * "I can do whatever I want to you, I'm the customer" * "I'm a 61 year old man in the trades and I make a lot of money and if you worked harder you would too" * "Do you have a girlfriend, you need to take good care of her."(a 16 year old minor) * "My water needs to be filled and my drink is empty"( he was a bus boy) * "If you don't do what I ask of you, you'll be left out on the streets with no job." We called and confronted the owner about this behavior. She first told us that she was sitting right next to us and then said she was working downstairs once we told her how disgusting the table's behavior was. Lucia's inability to take accountability speaks to her poor management and leadership. I hope that as a human being she can reflect and choose to be better for her staff's sake. read more

I went with a friend, and we ordered queso to start; it tasted like velveeta. The service was incredibly slow for how few customers. Our server missed many obvious hints, such as an empty glass at the edge of the table or a wave. With as few customers as there were, it should have been easy to keep a water and soda. Servers did not greet us until we had been standing in the entry way with the cold air blowing on us from the door along with another couple that came in after us, and once they did say hello it was very passive and only because she had to. Also the server took approx 15 mins to come greet us just to say she would bring chips instead of taking our drink order (even tho we We're there long enough to have our order ready), once she returns with the chips she gets our order then it takes about 45 mins for me and 1 other persons orders to come and wow so gross all of it the enchilada was very very cold and when we nicely informed the waitress all she had to say was we could get 1 to go but it'll probably be cold by the time we get home so we probably don't want it and next time she would " hook us up". It's difficult to rate this higher than 3 stars when you have had Mexican food outside of Alaska. It just doesn't hold a candle AT ALL. With that in mind, I would say it's better than average for "Alaskan" Mexican food..make sense? There are a few great dishes here and everything else is just mediocre. The fajitas are seasoned and grilled well. The Pork Carnitas (If asked for extra crispy) are really good. Not all Mexican restaurants offer them because they are time intensive if done right. The Asada Burrito is pretty good, a staple for my husband when we go. The chips and salsa aren't fantastic but they aren't horrible either. The service is hit or miss. We have been going there for 7 years and they still never seem to recognize us as regulars/locals. Oh well, I mean it's a nice touch for customer service, but doesn't keep me from going there if I want Mexican food. Overall, it's middle of the road and the best in Eagle River comparatively. THE OWNER OF CHEPOS ALLOWS COMPANY TO VERBALLY ASSULT THE STAFF!!!!! The owner of Chepos in Eagle River is DISGUSTING!!!! I was there a few minutes ago with my husband, brother, and my brothers girlfriend. Her company/friends sat in the booth behind us and an older man (61) verbally harassed, bullied and chastised a 16 year old busser for 20 minutes. Telling him that as a customer he can verbally and physically assault him and he has to give them good service. They degraded his clothing and told him he has to work harder or he will be on the streets. They demanded that he serve them better as if he was thier server. He was a BUSSER who was doing is his job perfectly. They also said "why doesn't the white boy speak Spanish". Once I spoke to the manager and brought it to his attention that his employee was being harassed. He told the owner and they continued to poke fun that a customer complained about how they were acting and continued to poke fun at the poor kid who is just trying to do his job and said "why doesn't the white boy speak Spanish." The older man continued to boast about his job as a heavy equipment operator in the trades and the amount of money he makes and degraded the boy on how he should be more like the man. THE OWNER DID NOTHING TO DEFEND HER EMPLOYEE. As we were leaving they were also joking about the boy quitting. The man also continued to grab the busser by the shirt and pull him in and grab him and not let him leave the table. Other comments made were: "When my glass is empty you take it" his glass was full "You should listen to me, I'm a man you don't wanna mess with" "I'm a lawyer and when I see the papers for people who have been fired or quit I have to give them to someone else cause I'll automatically side with you" - a lady at the table to the owner read more

Smelled ok. i loaded a few photos, my plate, my hubby's plate and the pinatas hanging from the ceiling. ok... the food was mediocre. it was a little expensive. two meals, and one margarita.. 40+ dollars.. So not that good for the price. The salsa wasn't very good the "hot" wasn't hot and the mild tasted like tomato sauce with a garlic flavor. Seriously? A buddy of mine said he knows the owner so I had to give this place another chance. I have in and did so! I repeated my last order tacos, burrito, enchiladas and flan. While the flan wasn't burnt this time it did have little flavor, the tacos were ok, slightly dry, but the burrito was over cooked and the meat in the enchilada was burnt, and the guac was brown. While the food here is good quality, and the service is very well, as they are always attentive and respectful, I find myself reluctant to go there for food due to the lack of attention to detail I often find, especially with take out orders. It's become almost a regular occurrence for them to leave at least one item that we ordered out, and oftentimes even more. In addition to this, we once found a wire in one of our beans and rice dishes that we ordered as take-out, which quite obviously left us feeling extremely apprehensive over ordering food from here. For that reason, I would recommend the nearby Jalapeños over this restaurant. read more
