It's not the best Mexican in town but the fajitas do the trick. Don't bother with the nachos, it's just some melted cheese on tortilla chips with some jalapeños. You can do that at home with your microwave. Service was very friendly and the place is beautiful inside and out. read more

Got our food to go. It didn't appear they had proper to-go containers as our food was packaged on a paper plate lined with foil, covered with another paper plate. We got chips and salsa (a LOT of Salsa) which the salsa was packaged in a 16 ounce drink cup with a lid. They filled it to the TOP! The food was okay, the carne asada appeared to be a bit on the overcooked side and was VERY salty. I had the fajitas, and the vegetables were onions and green bell peppers (no red bell peppers?) and it was mostly onions. The tortillas were flour, I wasn't given an option for corn, or else I would've chosen corn. The food may have been better had we eaten there, but they were having a private party that evening. Staff was very nice though, and to be fair, my bar for Mexican food is pretty high. They had a cute little vignette at the front where you could take a pic for the 'gram, so that was fun. read more

Worst night out in Anchorage we have ever had. Food was 3/10. Margaritas were 4/10. Service seemed so nice, until they kicked us out in the rudest way because they close at 9, even though their sign on the front window says 10, as well as the internet. We were never told this until we were being escorted to pay and leave. Also as we were being kicked out (before the official closing hour), the owner and his wife told us "we make the rules", and "we don't need your business." Never been treated so poorly in a restaurant. Our table of 4 had 3 meals and 5 drinks for roughly $150 in revenue. To top it all off, my wife who has celiacs disease was told her food was safe, yet suffered a severe reaction on our car ride home. Worst night out in Anchorage we have ever had. Good communication goes a long ways. And 2/4 of us speak fluent Spanish, so no excuses. Horrible experience. read more

I wish the chips were thinner and the salsa was warm when served. Many restaurants served a mild green salsa with chips. That would be a nice addition as well. read more

El Dorado is terrific! Every dish was fabulous. They make a mean margarita! Marcus was wonderful as was Carmen. They accommodated a party of eight as easily as a part of four. I'm still working on the difference between 2 orders of Grilled Fajitas and the Fajitas For Two option. Maybe it just the savings of a couple bucks. So that's good. PRO TIP: Pay the extra three bucks and get the Fajitas Monarca. It's seafood fajitas with shrimp, scallops and halibut. My buddy Dale ordered off the American menu. He went big and had the N.Y. Strip steak, fries and a salad. He was mildly surprised as to how great the meal was. They have large portions and fast service. The atmosphere is very relaxed and authentic. Not too busy, so we had a chance to chat with her. She was from Guadalajara originally, and the food is very much authentic Mexican, as I have eaten in many "Mom & Pop" restaurants throughout Mexico. 10/10. I don't know why it took me 3 years of living here to find el dorado. I felt at home, the staff is so kind! You feel like you're eating at a close family member's house. My boyfriend got el jefe- NY steak was large and perfectly cooked mixed with an enchilada topped with mushrooms and onions. I got the chicken fajita salad and everything was so fresh and amazingly seasoned to perfection. Chips, salsa, and spinach dip was on point. I chose this place due to decent reviews for my birthday dinner with my wife and friends. From the time I sat down the server rushed my group to order. When we ordered I finished my drink and was not offered a refill until I was finished with my food. Anything we asked was met with passive aggressive responses. My friend paid for my family's food, and naturally we did not tip well for service that was not good. The server took the ticket and put it in my face and said, "He paid, you're tipping right?!?" When I said no she walked off and said "Unbelievable". Okay, so if you actually do your job well, give my group refills and cut the passive aggressive attitude, you can expect a good tip. Shoving a ticket in my face after my friends paid is not okay. Do better. On the other hand, the food was very good. Compliments to the cooks and the cooks only. read more

This was my second visit for lunch the this excellent authentic Mexican restaurant. It is located in a strip mall complex and difficult to see from street. It is located at the corner of Old Seward Hwy and Lake Otis Parkway. It is definitely worth braving the traffic to find an entrance to the mall and the restaurant. The have a large outdoor sign right next to the restaurant. It has some of the best Mexican decor I have found in a restaurant outside of Mexico. It has a large serving area with both tables and booths. The menu features many authentic Mexican specialties at reasonable prices for AK. They serve fresh corn chips and house made fresh salsa both mild and spicy portions. I would not characterize the spicy salsa as hot but taste it carefully for your personal tolerance. These salsa's were excellent with taste of tomato , onion and cilantro. If they don't already they should consider marketing their salsas in house or stores it was that good. We both ordered the "Enchiladas Acapulco", Two Shrimp, halibut and scallops, enchilada, topped with sauce, swiss cheese and sour cream for $22.95 from the dinner portion of the menu. They were flavorful and filled with an abundance of the seafood, perfectly cooked, hot and covered in a well seasoned creamy white sauce. I believe they were prepared individually by the Chef and not pre-made and just heated. A portion of fried rice, refried beans, salad with Avocado accompanied the main dish. The fried rice was well seasoned and contained small bits of tomato, onion, carrot, peas, and whole kernel corn. The rice and vegetables were cooked just right so as to retain their shape and flavor and not over cooked and mushy. The refried beans were covered with a thin layer of melted cheese . The Avocado was freshly sliced and flavorful. The service was friendly, efficient, attentive and very welcoming. The prices are reasonable for Anchorage and the restaurant is suitable for families and groups. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning to try more of their menu options. I have provided photos of their menu. I would rate this restaurant as one of the best Mexican restaurants in Anchorage and an excellent replacement for the passing of "La Med" downtown. read more

Decided to give the highest rated Mexican food restaurant in Anchorage a try. I have to caveat this review by saying I was born and raised in El Paso, Tx. I can make everything on the menu and then some, BUT the husband and I still like to visit one occasionally and rate them fairly. So first the chips and salsa would get this place a 3 star easily. The chips are thick and stale, cold and in one word blah. The salsa was okay. The mild sauce was flavorful, the spicy one had a strange sour rag kind of taste to it. Not sure if it was the tomatoes or cilantro but the taste was off. If you ask however they have a habanero salsa in the back. Being from Texas I'm not huge into the sweetness of habaneros but this was definitely the freshest salsa and the heat was a slow creeper. When ordering here I try to be impartial and like I said, fair. The best way to get the best Mexican food at any restaurant is asking the waiter/tress what they'd order. Our waiter excitedly recommend the chicken chipotle or carnitas. Loving carnitas home made I decided, why not!? NO regrets! The carnitas were amazing 5/5. The flavors were intense the pork was tender, the home made tortillas they were served with were so good. The guacamole was fresh and limey. The beans were very flavorful and not the usual super bland watered downs variety usually served at restaurants, also not overly spiced with cumin (I hate when they do that) these beans were fantastic 5/5 easy. The rice was not good though. The flavors were there, but whoever cooked it definitely over worked it. When you add the flavors to the rice after frying it, you let it sit and plump up. The cook must've mixed and stirred it to death. It was mushy and that really messes with the good rice texture you want with beans. The rice was a 2-3 of 5. Rice is a big deal (I think at least lol) Surprises!! The tamale they served was so good! I don't order tamales at restaurants because they're always a fail (except in California and Texas hole in the wall places) BUT they actually have moist tamales with flavorful masa and wonderfully seasoned pork. 10/5 because I totally wasn't expecting that! We also ordered jalapeño poppers, just because. We figured they'd be frozen and fried but we were hungry. The surprise is that they were house made, flavorful and hot. The breading was very good. Overall- we'd go back. We left full and happy. The service was fantastic, everyone was friendly And the food was so hot we had to blow on it and wait a bit. (After doing the stupid blowing hot air out of your mouth because you didn't realize how hot it was move) If you want authentic, delicious, Mexican food, come by my place , but if you want Mexican food with flavor and a decent evening out while supporting a local restaurant, this is the place to go. read more

El Dorado is located in the strip mall cluster of Tudor and Old Seward. They have a lovely entrance with cultural decor spread throughout their space. We came for a late lunch and were seated right away. Our server was welcoming and accommodating. Food and drinks came out fast. The margaritas here were awful. Tried to get through them so we could order brew. I got the feeling El Dorado definitely caters to their American customer base. I ordered a dish with steak and it was very plain-Jane. I do not visit Mexican restaurants for salads. Especially salads with no dressing and with lots of avocado. No indication on the menu I'd be getting a handful of rice, no beans and this dry salad as a side. My spouse got a few tamales and although they had good texture and flavor, they poured enchilada sauce on top? Not bad but not the best. Besides the jalapeño poppers that had great breading, nothing else about our meals were memorable. Despite the hype, El Dorado is not at the top of my Best Mexican in Alaska list. read more

What a great place. We stopped in very hungry and had the owner greet us at the door and seat us right away. Her son took our orders and made sure we had all we needed throughout the evening. The burritos and fajitas were so good. The owner came back over and made sure we liked the food and asked if we had enough. She was very funny and had us all laughing. I hate to do this but El Dorado is not authentic. I really liked Carmen with her enthusiasm and friendly greeting "Hola" but it doesn't make up for the food that I found rather bland. The Torta fell apart in my hands immediately. Little meat and too much Mayo with no avocado. Served with French fries, seriously? The fajita "tacos" were just the veggies and meat already rolled up in a soft flour tortilla. In both instances the meat was dry, overcooked and lacked flavor. Best part was the delicious Horchata. I'd order that again but I'm not coming back. I'm sorry , Carmen, but a 3-star is the best I can give. read more
