No frills atmosphere but creative selection of food and drinks. The inside is quite diner-like and makes you feel like you're really in a roadhouse. Seating is made up of booths along the window perimeter, tables thru the middle area and a large bar area with more tables and stools along the counter. The menu selection is surprisingly diverse. I was happy to see halibut as the fish for their fish & chips, as it is often cod or other white fish. I find halibut to be the best. They also have a few dishes with nods to Korean and Thai flavors. There are pizzas and dinner salads too. I went with their bacon jam burger for dinner. It is cooked to your liking and has a grilled apple, cambozola, bacon jam, arugula & house mayo. This is the best burger I've had in a long time. The flavors complement each other so well. If you are a fan of bleu cheese you will really love the cambozola. It is creamy and oozy and is amazing on a burger. My spouse tried their Cuban sandwich and didn't like that the pickles were mediocre and didn't add to the overall flavors, and that the bread wasn't crisped or toasted in any way -- the way Cubans traditionally are. He also took a chance with a appetizer off the specials menu which he imaged was Brussels sprouts however it was shaved sautéed Brussels sprout leaves, over warm couscous with lots of fresh herbs, jalapeños, and heavily spiced with bold spices like fennel. It was bizarre and not like anything we've ever tried. We liked some of the flavors but all together didn't make sense to us so we sent it back, unfortunately. Our child tried the Mac and cheese that came with purple grapes and sorbet. The Mac and cheese was good although I'd advise SRH to try a larger noodle than a small shell so kids can stab it better and get it in their little mouths. The sorbet must be seasonal/rotating bc it was cinnamon honey pear and it was crazy delicious. I'd come back for just the sorbet tbh. Other than that our red-haired bespectacled server was fairly attentive and quite friendly, even on a very busy Friday dinner rush. Parking lot just outside seems easy enough as long as you can grab a spot at busy times. Will be back in the future for the fried halibut (and sorbet!). read more

The food was 3 stars, I got the Cobb salad and honestly it was subpar, not sure whaat kind of lettuce they used but it was bitter, and it was lightly done, more like a 1/2 Cobb elsewhere but this was the full dinner version - not great. But the 2 stars come from the fact that I knew my sister in-law was paying the bill, and I wanted another beer but I didn't want her to pay for it, so I went to the bathroom and tried to get a drink at the bar which I was going to pay cash for and tip the bartender, and I was told that if I was at a table I had to order there. Really? You lost my business in the future, and lost your money from this sale, and honestly, are you my mommy telling me I can't buy a beer and go sit at the table? I'm going to leave it here, otherwise I'm going to talk myself into giving you 1 star. Please, you can do better! How about, sure what can I get you? I think the service has become more consistently good again, which is nice to see. I like that you pay on their tablet that the servers carry around so they don't take your card away. This spread pictured below coast me $50, the sliders were shareable and we all ordered them, I thought they were 3, but they had 4 and were $17. Everything was delicious though. Loved it!! Much more lowkey than some of the other brewhouses in Anchorage. Has amazing beer, huge portions of food (especially for the price), and very friendly staff and spacious interior. I can't think how I have failed to add a review for somewhere we've been coming to for years. I know, I did have a certain disdain for tater tots for many years, so maybe it's that. But Spenard Roadhouse is iconic Alaskan, you HAVE to come here. The decor is fairly busy, but it's not in a jarring way - it fits with this building. There's a full bar (I don't drink alcohol, so that's irrelevant to me) and lots of indoor, and outdoor seating. There's outdoor seating, is super pretty as you're in amongst the hanging baskets, and I really couldn't make my mind up where to sit last night, as the temperature outside was perfect. I had been ordering the same thing here for ages, but it's not on the menu anymore. (Wild mushrooms ravioli in a cream sauce, and it was chef's kiss superb) so I opted for the avocado melt, and super tots (because I have only recently started to enjoy tater tots) he got a burger with regular tater tots. I got a Strawberry Boba drink. Service was prompt, and food came out pretty quickly, despite the busy dining room. I was surprised that my super tots were made with sweet potato, which I hadn't noticed on the menu when I ordered. I'm not a sweet potato fan, and when our server came to check on us, I inquired if super tots were normally made with sweet potatoes, and she said that no, they were not. That they were a mistake, and she ordered me a new plate. They came out quite promptly, even so, I had nearly finished my avocado melt. I enjoyed the avocado melt, though I feel it's lacking somewhat, and needs a bit more flavour. Seasoning? Maybe a bit of bacon perhaps? The super tots were very good, and the strawberry boba drink was delicious. Anyway, I'll definitely return. read more

Spenard Roadhouse has become one of my favorite restaurants in Anchorage over the years. They have a unique variety of food and drinks and service is always great. They have a lot of gluten-free and vegan options clearly labeled on the menu. I like that dishes with Alaska products are also labeled on the menu. Most recently I had the cajun reindeer scramble which was flavorful and filling. It included marionberry jam for the toast which I enjoyed. If you have room after your main course, their desserts are delicious. I've tried the banana cream pie and the flourless chocolate cake and loved both. The main downside is it can be hard to find parking when it's busy since the lot is small. However if you're able to go outside peak dinner hours then parking shouldn't be a problem. read more

Stopped in for brunch and stumbled upon this gem. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating--great atmosphere to relax and enjoy a meal. The coffee was excellent, and the pineapple frizz drink was well-balanced and refreshing. We started with the buffalo fried bacon, which was a fun twist, though the sauce was a bit overpowering. When I asked for hot coffee, I got attitude from the male 40-ish server, demonstrated by: fresh coffee cup harshly put on the table, old coffee not removed, no cream. Had to flag the server down even though he was attentive to the table next to us. Was not offered a refill (the table next to us was refilled). Another time I was there, the breakfast was not hot and did not seem to be fresh made. That time, the waiter did not come back for 15 dang minutes while I sat there NOT eating the cold food. Excellent food! Multiple visits here while in Anchorage and found it consistently excellent! I had a few complicated orders omitting and adding things to my order and server was wonderful! Food came out plated beautifully and perfect! Sauces, breads, and all the other homemade from scratch items were tasty. They also had house made sodas that were good as well. Atmosphere was lively and eclectic. Loved it! Hoping we have time on our vacation to go back for dinner. Highly recommend as it's been a consistent eatery throughout our visits throughout the years. I love that they cycle through top quality bacons! My personal favorite is the Eggs Benedict on French toast (instead of English muffin) with bacon instead of ham. I just wish the service had been more accurate. I didn't bother to return the sandwich because I didn't want to wait for another meal to be made. We returned to SR on the last night of stay in Alaska. So glad that we did. Sarah made the experience memorable. Five of us ordered Old Fashioneds. Sarah suggested we let the bartender go wild with various bitters, which was a taste treat. That allowed us to zero in on a favorite for a second round. The bartender even came to our table to meet the group who entrusted him with creating unique flavors. Of the five entrees, all were delicious. The halibut sandwich was superb. Shrimp and grits and the jambalaya are both true comfort food loaded with flavor. If you can find a little room for dessert, get the peanut butter pie. It's beyond decadent. Spenard Roadhouse is a classic in the Anchorage casual dining scene. I've always enjoyed my meals here and the one last weekend was no exception. To start, they always have fantastic cocktails; I had the Rhubarbra Streissand which was delicious and perfect for summer without being too sweet. For a main, I had the Alaskan Seafood Jumbalya, which so good I couldn't put my fork while eating it. The service was a bit slow during this visit, despite the restaurant not seeming packed, which is the only reason for 4 stars. Otherwise, can't recommend Spenard Roadhouse enough! read more

Had a great time at Spenard Roadhouse. The experience did live up to ratings. Fast and friendly service. The servers know the menu and are very happy to make suggestions. The ambiance is fun and they offer outdoor eating, which is great on a nice day. This restaurant is quite busy so expect a wait. The downside is the parking. There is just not enough for the crows it gathers. We parked in the adjacent parking lot. Since the businesses were closed during the weekend it seemed okay. Be warned that in the adjacent parking lot there are many homeless living there. :( The food was good portioned and delicious! Definite comfort food at its finest! The menu was a great size. This was, for a decade around the corner from my home, and it was my escape. I've eaten here more time that I can count. I often didn't check in or take pictures because it was my escape... Spenard Roadhouse is one of those places that has always been a genuine "hipster paradise" as someone called it WITHOUT TRYING. It just comes naturally. Back in the early days of YELP, when I, and people like me were looking for people that for those hidden gems in our community - THIS - this beautiful AUTHENTIC comfortable but hip neighborhood restaurant with excellent, unusual modern food is what we were hoping to unearth. Spenard Roadhouse will always be my first love in Anchorage. It's stepchild, Southside Bistro... it just... tries to hard. Great stop on our way out of Anchorage. We came at a slightly off time and were seated right away. Lots of light and Alaska inspired decor made the interior interesting and pleasant to spend time in. There was uncovered outdoor seating, but it was lightly raining so we chose to sit inside. Biscuit basket came out quickly and the honey butter was not too sweet. Coffee was great and the staff was quick on the refill. The menu is eclectic with plenty of options that include Alaskan ingredients...they highlight them so they are easy to find. My wife and I tried the avocado melt with tots and the seafood ravioli. Bathrooms were clean and staff were friendly. While we were on one check, they accommodated split checks and larger parties.
