Wanted to try this bar based on initial reviews. Walked in and it was very quiet on a Saturday. Asked for an old fashioned and the bartender said it was 15 minutes past her shift, her replacement was late and she had to leave and didn't know what to do. She then washed dishes for the next 5 minutes....in which time she could have made the drink easily. I Just got up and left, it looked like I wasn't missing much from what I saw. Never been to a bar where they greet you and then won't make you a drink and then proceed to ignore your group. Despite decent reviews I wouldn't waste your time making a trip here but that is up to you. read more

Amazing dive bar, if you're lucky hottie Alaskan Annie will be bartending. The popcorn is nice and salty and they have a good selection of local beers. No taps unfortunately is the only downfall of this lovely Alaskan dive. No food so eat before u come or you can bring food in! Found this place here on yelp was doing some barhopping with my wife over a glacier brewhouse. Ask the bartender about it and she couldn't recommend it more highly so we stopped by had a couple drinks and was an absolute blast. Mostly locals super welcoming would absolutely come again thank you so much for the amazing hospitality. read more

I came here on a Tuesday with my friend for a quick beer around 6pm. Cheryl was the bartender of the night. Very friendly woman she was. My friend and I were not sure of the beer Selection. Cheryl suggested some very unique beers for both of us and we both loved them. And a add-on was there is a little jukebox in the back. I'd say it's pretty cute. If your travels ever take you to downtown Anchorage, this is the spot you need to go. What an awesome, intimate, funky and local dive bar. You'll almost always find a hilarious cast of characters both behind and in front of the bar. The small U-shape of it is prime for conversations and jokes (and even some sports banter and jabs back and forth!) They serve a selection of local beers as well as a full bar. Can't speak for the food personally, but it did look good and reasonably priced. It doesn't seem to be a prime destination for cruisers (very populated by hundreds of people in the downtown area each day a boat is docked), which is a plus in my book! :) they can head to the knife and fur shops all they want and leave the local hang out to us! There's a really rude female bartender, she's a blonde middle aged woman... she refused to remake a shot for my friend, even after she said she would pay for the remake. I told her it was her job to remake it, she looked at me in disbelief. No customer service skills, rude and disrespectful. I don't know how she has a job there. I'm sure management has heard plenty of complaints about her. I will never go back. Very unfortunate. read more

Exceeded my dive bar expectations. Great vibe. Sat down was greeted with a bowl of popcorn and friendly bartender. There were two newspaper on the bar I'm guessing the locals read it and chat. First off, I must admit that I am a total sucker for a local's dive bar. This place is listed under Dive bar as the dictionary definition! I loved this place. My son and I had to stop in here and it was packed at 4:00 pm on a Tuesday...appears that it's almost all locals. We took last two seats in the place since two people had just got up and left. They have an old-school look and a homey feel. Prices are average for the area and no food but they have free popcorn. But, don't grab it yourself...it's not self serve. More hungry? You can order food next door and they will let you eat it in there. It's great for people watching and clearly a lot of the folks at the bar know each other: probably regulars. They have a cool jukebox in the back as well and some funny sayings! The one waitress was a bit squirrelly and it took us twice to ask her for popcorn but she asked right away to the couple that sat next to us. I won't drop a star down for that but almost. I hadn't been here in over a year, and I decided to go after Book of Mormon last Friday. My first thought was: what the hell is wrong with me?! This is the type of place where strangers will sit with you, chat you up, and buy you some shots. But not in a creepy way. Dudes buying dudes shots, ladies buying ladies shots, groups of dudes and ladies buying groups of dudes and...you get the idea! It's always cramped, and that's the point. If you don't want to go in because it "looks crowded", this probably isn't the place for you anyway. The staff have incredible quick service. As soon as you set one beer down, they are there ready to bring you another. How do they know my can of beer is empty?! Can they see through aluminum?! HOW DO THEY DO IT? Don't be afraid. Do you have all of your shots? Okay, good, we are going to Darwin's! For whatever reason, every time I mentioned Darwin's Theory to locals, they just rolled their eyes and said "oh wow", and mumbled something about a dive bar. Came here midafternoon when it was empty, and then again another date after 7pm when it was completely packed. First thing I saw during the second trip was a guy walk out, take off all his clothes, and then proceed to walk, naked, down the alley next to the building. Hmm. He must have lost a bet. Being careful not to touch anything, I enjoyed the atmosphere, the "take no crap" bartenders, and the locals socializing inside this bar. Yes, it's a dive bar. So what? They have popcorn. They have any option you'd have in a full bar, plus beer selections by the can or bottle and a bottle of wine which"I know it's here somewhere". Everyone at the bar and in the back areas was very very friendly - with my group, with me, with the bartenders, with each other. Just seemed like a happy friendly spot where you can get the same beers as elsewhere, at a lower price, and with a huge helping of comraderie. That's worth something.
