This was a stop organized by our tour. The buffet has seasoned chicken, cubed, and pulled pork for make it yourself tacos. Also, seasoned rice, refried beans and pieces of deep fried halibut for the local "touch". The topping were shredded cheese, red and green salsas, cilantro, chopped white onions and nacho chips. Just went to the new Serrano's Downtown, located in the old Haute Quarter Grill, and WOW. They absolutely crushed the renovation, modern, upscale, and totally made the space their own. Serrano's has always been solid (their midtown location is a staple), but this downtown spot? Next level. The vibe alone puts it above Tequila 61--sorry, not sorry. My husband and I ordered the Jicama Tuna Tacos and the Rib-Eye Tacos. I should have taken photos... but we were starving and they were way too tempting. Plates were devoured immediately. No regrets. Amazing food, great atmosphere, and a huge win for downtown Anchorage. Great job, Serrano's, we'll definitely be back. read more

I like Serranos but I had mixed feeling when I heard about yet another location. Isn't Tequila 61, a few blocks away, kind the same thing? What happened to Haute Quarter grill? I had a great time at this location though. Maybe it's because of it's no full-on tourist season yet but, I was able to pony up to the bar and get served right away. The selection of taps is above average, and cocktails are the perfect mix of Mexican classics and new school takes. Be careful about that specials menu though! That's all the hell expensive stuff! I got a few street tacos from the main menu instead for $15. The icing on the cake is that they are open late, REAL late! This is, sadly, a rarity in Anchorage '25. read more

Note: When we visited the hours on YELP were wrong. They're open until 830 on Sundays, not midnight. Yelp still says midnight, so you might want to confirm with the restaurant. Trivia: A concentration of 10,000 to 25,000 units of capsaicin places this item a little less than halfway up the Scoville scale. The menu is different from their other two locations. At this point I think the queso is best at the Tudor location and it's sort of weird to me that one must go to different locations for different things. This menu seemed the shortest of the three. But this location is certainly convenient when one is downtown. I'm just not sure downtown needs another Mexican restaurant. How about a Nepalese place? Korean? Italian? But I digress. The place wasn't busy, so we had our pick seating. For those familiar with Haute Quarter, you'll not see a ton of differences with the arrangement. Gone is the table viewing the kitchen. This is the fouth location the Serrano's has opened in Anchorage's since the closing of their original tiny location on 36th almost 15 years ago. Wow, what a distinctly different location is. It is absolutely beautiful inside. Of the 3 locations currently open in Anchorage it is the most intimate and upscale. Definitely not a location to being the kids. Service was prompt and friendly. Received great service from owner (I assume) of the restaurant and had one of the best Birria tacos I've ever had :) I suggest to get jalapeños salsa if you like spicy. It's spicy but very good! I liked eating my tacos with mix of regular salsas. Amazing consome with grilled crunchy taco. Will come back on my next business trip here!! I visited around 1pm bright outside but it's not safe area so be careful when you walk in. Someone in the street followed me into the restaurant and owner almost called a police. Be safe! read more

Service was impossible! Every item ordered was painstakingly entered into a digital pad by a server who clearly had very little keypad experience. Ordered a mezcal beverage that had no mezcal and asked the bartender to adjust, which he took as a personal insult and threw the drink out in frustration. This review is for Serrano's third location in downtown Anchorage. Serrano's replaced Haute Quarter Grill. Recently opened and beige, (clean girl aesthetic as the kids say). There are a mix of tables, booths, and a long farm table for seating. They have folding doors that completely open up their space on sunny days. We quite enjoyed viewing their liquor case but a "Serranos mural," was definitely missed. The menu for this location is small and seems more expensive than their other two locations. We visited on a Sunday and there was no brunch menu. Darn, should've went to Tequila61 down the street. We ordered a taco bowl and egg rolls. Both were delicious. We had 2 specialty drinks. We highly recommend the Black Magic Woman, my dining partner and I weren't fans of the Chupacabras. We settled on a few Michelada's, except we didn't receive Michelada's, we got Mangonadas that tasted different each time (2x). Trying to pay our check was a nightmare. We had to ask for the check more than once. We paid on one tab, with both cash + card and let's just say the server made it more complicated than was necessary. She should've asked for help, instead of coming over to us 20x, over what should've been a simple transaction. She was apologetic and said it was her first time. All in all, if you're a local, I'd stick to Serrano's Tudor or Northern Lights locations. Everything about this location is touristy. read more

More like 2.5 The food was lackluster at best. Maybe we're spoiled with the freshness of table-side guacamole that we get in Portland. The guac we were served tasted like some premade stuff from kroger or Safeway packaged in bulk. The chips were flavorless and my margarita had no tequila flavors mostly just simple syrup. Part of our order was rib eye tacos and the meat was so tough to chew my kiddo decided to just opt for the rice and beans. I will say, the ambiance was stellar! I ordered the Asada fries, fajita burrito, and quesabirria tacos, I also ordered a Paloma with grenadine added and a churro cheesecake to go . First, the staff taking my order seemed to be flustered and having a hard time keeping up. So much so he didn't even put my taco order in when I originally ordered it. I waited 10 minutes after I got everything else to bring up that I don't have my tacos and they said I didn't order them. So I had to wait another 20 for them to come out. I gotta tell ya, the wait for the quesabirria tacos was not worth it. The meat was insanely dry and absent of flavor, I was also only given one little quarter of lime for the 3 tacos and a drop of consommé, as well as they were practically cheeseless. The rice and beans that came with the fajita burrito were amazing! The burrito itself was quite soggy and also lacking flavor. My Paloma drink I asked for with grenadine, was not brought to me with grenadine in it. I brought this to their attention and insisted they put some in but very obviously did not so I just asked them to "please put more." Lastly, the asada fries. These were honestly the star of the show!! I 100% will be going back just for these. They were crispy, hot, juicy steak bites, lovely ripe tomatoes, lots of queso, and the guacamole??? I'm not a guacamole fan let alone an avocado fan, but their guac is HEAVENLY! The last thing I got and brought home but did not end up taking a picture was the churro cheesecake. It wasn't churro at all. The crust tasked like an undercooked sugar cookie, there was caramel which wasn't on the description, and there was also a slice of banana. An upscale Mexican restaurant in downtown Anchorage directly across from the Federal Building. The food was perfectly acceptable if not truly memorable. The carnitas taco was overpowered by double corn tortillas that were too greasy and fell apart halfway through the bites. And the grilled chicken tacos were massively overwhelmed by a large handful of chopped red onions. But the biggest misstep of Serranos is their choice of a soundtrack. Redneck country music has no place being the soundtrack of a seemingly authentic Hispanic restaurant. It's offensive, off putting and actually ruins the ambiance as opposed to supporting it. Whoever is making that audio decision calls into question their choices of other aspects of running a restaurant. read more

The three basics of dining were all missing tonight: Food- al pastor should be a wonderful, bright flavored dish; this one tasted like aciote paste only- grainy and somewhat bitter. Service- it shouldn't take 20 minutes to bring "draft" beer that is flat and tastes stale. Orders should be complete the first time, and bills should be correct. Ambiance- if anyone's idea of good atmosphere includes the manager complaining to the kitchen staff at high volume for long stretches during your meal; COME ON DOWN, this is the place for you! I have never done a review I have driven through the drive-through from Seward Alaska over the last four years to get the tortilla soup which was wonderful I spent almost $100 yesterday and it was almost all disgusting I appreciate the packaging that I asked for But the taco shells smelled like they could've come out of a package from the grocery store the oil I don't know it was horrible I don't know why you would salsa that you couldn't even taste the peppers and tomatoes I ordered tortilla soup. He asked me how much or what meat I wanted in it I said I'd like some chicken, but not a lot. I got nothing. Floating avocado in a disgusting broth The queso was good and I think the hot sauce was good. It's the hot sauce, but if you order anything else, I can't begin to imagine what spice overtakes the product. I also want to mention that their credit card machine asked if I wanted 18%. I've dinned here a few times and have enjoyed my experience, mostly for the cool atmosphere and drink selection. I was surprised they have a different food and drink menu for this location; I missed having the option of ordering a selection of tacos or a Mucho Macho meal! I did not like that it's quite a bit pricier than the other two locations. In my eyes, why change it if it's already good? Then again... it is downtown Anchorage, I suppose that's to be expected. Visited Serranos while in Anchorage for a conference with my team. We went in on a Wednesday afternoon and walked in with no wait. The atmosphere was clean and welcoming, and the service was excellent. Everyone loved their meals. I ordered the carne asada fries off the appetizer menu and was impressed by the portion size. The flavor of the meat was more smoky than your typical Mexican restaurant, which gave it a unique flavor that we were surprised by. Would definitely visit again. read more

This is a nice Mexican bar and food establishment that I think is fairly new. You go in and find your own seat. The decor is really nice but did seem a bit dark for my taste but overall just fine. Service was good as our waitress was attentive once seated. We had a beer with our tacos. My mom had street tacos and thought the shrimp was the best. She has an aversion to cilantro and they did leave it out. I had the halibut tacos and they were delicious. The waitress sent out two types of salsa to try and both were delicious! One suggestion for the business would be the store front. If anyone is just walking by it's hard to really see what it is unless walking up to the window as a tourist. I'd highly recommend adding a menu board to welcome people to check it out. read more

The choriqueso was good! The entrees though were lacking in flavor and were very very bland. The meat was pretty dry too. Now - the drinks were phenomenal! Very tasty & crafty! One came out with flames and we weren't expecting it at all. Wasn't quite sure if we were suppose to tip it etc since the waiter walked off. On that note.. the service wasn't great. It took awhile to get waited on.. and no luck on asking for anything. They were watching the tv at the bar most of the time. I really enjoy the midtown location and I was excited for this one. However, it was disappointing. The service is a lot slower than the other location and the menu is very limited compared. Notably, the items are more expensive as well. The ambiance and atmosphere is nice, new and modern. They had a DJ which I thought was weird but not the worse thing. I think the establishment is having an identity crisis and should follow their midtown location. Also I'd recommend notating what is gluten free and what isn't. My group came in for dinner and drinks after a full night of First Friday events. We were seated and waited longer than expected for water and drink orders. Unfortunately for me they couldn't make the Viernes 13 cocktail, so beer it was. There were also no vegetarian dinners for this guy, so chips and salsa, and guacamole it was. A moment later, a server dropped catsup which splashed on my friend's and my coats and bags hanging on our chairs, which is a totally human goof. I was dismayed that my friend and I weren't offered any sort of compensation, but I wouldn't assume how I'd I have handled it is how everyone would. Surprisingly, the ambient techno music stopped and a band began to play a Tom Petty cover and subsequent cover songs, loudly enough that it stimied conversation.
