Open concept with high ceiling, visible beams and piping, several types of industrial lighting, dramatic "bad ass" art and bar built in white hutch adorned on each side by a scantily clad dressed "goddess". Menu is eclectic with signature cocktails, margaritas, zero-proof drinks, tequilas and more. The food options are just as diversified with Shareables, Entrees & Soups and Salads with seafood, meats and vegetable dishes. Bravo!! The Vegetable Fajita Molcajete came to the table piping hot and the aroma was mouthwatering. Beans and rice on the side with corn tortillas. All delicious and filling. We ran in to this place in the hour we had between bus stops and they were fantastic. Such good service and they accommodated our party of fifteen very well and had us in and out! PROS: Great service. Food was tasty. All the tacos I had were delicious (duck, carne asada), guacamole was fresh and tasty, the tortilla soup was the best tortilla soup I have ever had. CONS: none really Was such a nice break from all the fried food we had been eating in Seward, customer care was top notch, server nailed our orders without delay and we were on our way on the bus again with full bellies. Jicama taco shells? Yes, you heard it right. At tequila 61, they take the best of Latin foods to create a dining experience worth making an Open Table reservation for. Having dinner with friends, we arrived in the early dinner hours on a Saturday night and were seated immediately, passing by those that did not make a reservation. As we were seated the atmosphere was club meets finer dining, with a glassed in open kitchen. As we settled in, we were excited for a good meal and good times with our friends. Being on an Anchorage taco crawl, we went right to the taco menu and ordered the infamous Jicama Shrimp taco and by suggestion of our server, the Carnitas A La Mexicana. Before the server left, I added an order of Calamari Frita as an appetiser and I am glad I did. The Calamari is "tossed in New Mexico red chile flour and served with creamy chipotle and tomato fondue sauces". The calamari was juicy, the batter was just the right amount of spice to add the Latin flare and I was smiling... until I got past the top layer. The inside was all clumped together with uncooked batter, if only they would have shook the fryer basket one more time. The issue was resolved quickly and the manager brought empanados on the house that oozed with cheese as an apology. We enjoyed the textures and flavors of both tacos, with a "Strawberry with A Kick" Margarita, They were sweet, spicy, layered and the Jicama was a great shell for the Coconut Shrimp. If there were anything that would have made the experience better, it would be the tortilla on the Carnitas. We both felt the tortillas added nothing to the Carnitas and won't make our best of list in Anchorage. We are definitely looking forward to coming back and having a full menu adventure. If you want a good meal, good atmosphere, good service and don't mind the parking on 4th street, give it a try. Just a foodies thoughts... I've heard good things about this spot and decided it was time to find out for myself. I did a drop in but they do accept reservations. One of the more unique restaurants in Anchorage with the decor, really nice look and warm feel, they have ample seating for large and small groups. I settled on the Al Pastor street tacos with rice and beans and she has jicama shrimp tacos. We also indulged in some guacamole and chips before our meal came out. Everything had good taste and appeal. The food came out super fast and the server was really good too. They have a large menu for drinks but a little shirt on the beer side of things, as expected for a tequila focused spot. All in all a cool place and good food. Crab legs were so good but we were quoted at MP being $80/pound but then I was charged $50 for half pound. Bartender was nice and wanted me to enjoy the drink I ordered however when I asked to add a juice he then threw my drink away and said he'd make me another one but then CHARGED FOR BOTH when I never stayed I wanted it thrown out in the first place. Ciao! The concept behind this restaurant is great. The fusion of flavors are great. The restaurant offers a great atmosphere and top service. I started my dinning experience with fried calamari. They were very tasty, fresh and crispy. The spicy margarita was a good pairing. Tuesdays are half price Tacos. Take advantage of this if able. The Tacos are wonderful! My favorite were the Baja Tacos. Crispy battered fish on a tangy cold slaw combination. The Blacken Salmon tacos and Carne Asada are both good choices. Tacos come in a set of three. The cocktail choices are top notch and excellent crafted. The restaurant is family friendly, they have vegetarian choices and is centrally located. Glad I visit this restaurant. Haven't been here in over a year with all the Covid shut downs. Stopped in around 8pm for taco Tuesday. In the past they offered half off tacos on Tuesday - this is no longer the case, they now have a separate Taco Tuesday menu - some of the tacos are still half price, but others are not. Our server was beyond friendly and attentive. Why 3 stars? Well why eating at one of the booths/tables near the bar we saw a mouse run by under people sitting at the bar, right to the mat behind in the bar, and then back under the chairs with people sitting. We let one of the servers who was in the area know that we saw a mouse, he just walked around and then shrugged his shoulders. The carnitas tacos were super delicious and the fish tacos were really good also. read more

I'm in Alaska for some fun and adventure for the month of May. My few days dedicated to Anchorage overlapped with a very important date to me. Each year, I commemorate this particular day with a margarita. When planning my good assault on Anchorage and considering the need for a delicious margarita, Tequila 61 came up time and again. I hadn't yet booked my stay accommodations but with as many positive reccos as this place had I decided I'd drive as far as needed to make it happen, so I booked a rezzie through Open Table for right when they open, 5pm. Easy and done! Margarita and Mexican- here I come! When I arrived at Tequila 61, I was a little early and there was already a few groups waiting in the entryway. One was an adult family of four, and the other was a family with 4 young boys. While it caters to more of the adult crowd, the mix of these groups immediately told me this place is for everyone. When the hostess greeted me and was leading me in, I noticed the decor and design was exactly as I'd hoped. Reminded me of my favorite restaurants from home. It was rustic, tasteful and had a lot of natural light. The bar was beautiful and well-placed. I opted to sit there instead of a table. I was riding solo on this one- no need to take up a table. Unfortunately, this is where most of my positive experience ended. I was seated at the bar at the same time a solo guy saddled himself up in the middle. It took no time to put together that this guy was an alcohol rep and that he and the bartender had known each other and worked together for a while. Easy to piece together, as the bartender (didn't get his name because he never introduced himself) ignored me sitting there for, mmmm maybe 5-7 minutes, while he chatted with the alcohol rep, went through the drink list, gave him a food menu, made his drink, and spent more time catching up. It was here, when I was given a glass of water. The bartender then went back to chatting with the rep and walking through the new tequila and rum options available to order. Then, the sampling began. Not me, no no. I was still enjoying my water with no menu, not even a hello yet or an ask about my drink order. 5 more minutes later- we had a menu!! And, we are ordering a drink. The drink menu was not up to date. The liquor list was extremely outdated. I asked for 2 tequilas listed and the bartender said they were out of both. I settled for another one and surveyed the menu as he made my drink. Gave me the drink and then went back to sampling the new line-up and chatting with the rep.... for another 10 minutes. (I feel I must mention that it was only me, this rep and one other person at the bar who was being served by the other bartender who was also busy working in the restaurant.) So... I spent the first 20 or so minutes of my time here, on an evening that was supposed to be a special celebration, being ignored. Because this review is long enough now, and I think we've painted the picture, I'll start to wrap this up. I finally got to order but decided to order my app and meal at the same time, and had it served at the same time. Not ideal or what I wanted but felt I needed to in fear I'd never get food if I didn't. But wait! The bartender took my order and then didn't even put it in!! He went back to the rep and chatted for another 4 minutes before I FINALLY interrupted to ask him to put my order in. This was incredibly ridiculous!! I finally got my food. The jalapeño poppers- delicious. Not overly breaded and the sauce was so good. The jicama coconut shrimp tacos were okay. Love that they have the jicama shell offering. I'm low glycemic and corn doesn't usually fit that. And, I love coconut shrimp. But... for this one, the jicama shell was good, it was the shrimp that was burned. But- because I was not ever asked how my food was until it was almost gone, I said nothing. All in all, I would venture to say by the food I saw on other tables, the time that other tables received their order from when they arrived, and how everyone seems to be enjoying it- that this place is pretty awesome! That just didn't happen to be my experience. And, sadly on a day that I really wish it was. I may try again. But will for sure be avoiding this bartender. read more

By far the best drinks in the city of Anchorage, potentially the whole state. They are true mixologists. They work with the tastes of their clients to develop custom cocktails. They have wood smoke infused drinks that not only looks awesome, but it imparts a subtle smoke flavor to the drink. I would pass on the calamari, because it had a strange array of spices for me. But the quality of the calamari itself and the preparation was there. The tacos were great! I can't wait to take my husband back to this for a date night. read more

During my trip to Anchorage with some friends, we decided to have our first dinner here since it was so well-rated on Yelp. The 5 of us decided to order our own tacos, split 3 appetizers, and get drinks. It ended up being ~$45/person, which would be kind of reasonable if the food was good, but everything we ate was so meh. I got a 61 Margarita, which was delicious and was the only good part of my meal. Guacamole + Chips: This literally tasted like sour cream with the tiniest bit of avocado for coloring. They serve the tiniest amount of guacamole, and we ended up with too many chips and not enough guac at the end. Popcorn Shrimp: Too salty. The shrimp was kind of chewy and overcooked. Shrimp Ceviche: This was actually not that bad, but they also gave SO little ceviche. Jicama Shrimp Tacos: SO MESSY! I enjoyed the vibe of this place. Super trendy, really cool decor! We did not make reservations for a Friday night, but were able to secure a spot at the bar right away. It is an upscale Mexican restaurant, dare I say more of a Latin fusion place. There is no complimentary chips & salsa so be warned. It is not a typical run of the mill casual Mexican joint. They have a really nice tequila selection, and extensive, well put together cocktail list. Service was quick, and friendly so no complaints there. We started with an order of guacamole, and chorizo empanadas. The guac had really great flavor, and was a nice portion. The empanadas were ok, the dipping sauces were really good, but the empanadas were more dough than filling. Although the dough was pretty tasty! We decided to go with tacos as our entree. Taco Tuesday is a really good deal, and we will be back for that! I ordered the duck confit tacos, and my husband ordered the baja tacos. We both enjoyed our tacos, and thought they had good flavor. The duck confit tacos are on the pricier side for what they are, but I definitely wanted to try them because they were so different. I really liked the accompaniments for both tacos, and thought the flavors were well put together. Tequila 61 is a cool experience, and definitely a place to try at least once! We flew in from Fairbanks for some food and shopping. We were referred to this place BUT all four foodies were extremely disappointed. Everything lacked flavor- and I mean everything. The guac was obviously the us foods pre made mix which was super disappointing and lacked any flavor. We had a larger party 15 and there wasn't a dish that I would go back for. Everyone raves about Tequila 61, so I was excited to try it. It is directly across from the Hilton, which was super convenient for us. When you walk into the restaurant, you are immediately greeted by welcoming, beautiful decor. I am a huge fan of the ambience. There was also live, AMAZING music which made the experience even more enjoyable. We were seated by the host, who was not as warm and welcoming as the rest of the staff. We arrived at 9:40 and they stopped serving dinner at 10 but he did not give us a menu. He said that they had already stopped serving the full menu. Our server did bring it to us when she realized that we did not have it. We were grateful because we were really looking forward to the options! The drinks were AMAZING. I tried the tropical margarita and the others had the spicy margarita. We were impressed by the kick that the spicy margarita had. I loved that the tropical margarita was not overly sweet and had beautiful presentation. We had the queso fundido, carnitas tacos and duck confit tacos. All was great, but the duck was quite overdone and dry. The flavors were still spot on. We are only in the area for a few days, but will probably stop back in before we depart! read more

I am a sucker for ambiance when I dine out, and this place freakin HAS IT! Super cute decor and comfy booths! Service was perfect: kind and attentive, but not overbearing or overselling. Last night saw a good portion of Downtown Anchorage without power, so we found Tequila 61 (with power) and trekked over there to hang out. It was one of the busiest nights of the winter for any restaurants in Downtown Anchorage that had power, but the Tequila 61 was awesome, rising to the challenge. The decor was top notch--I felt like I was in any other modern metropolitan city--and the latin/Mexican food had amazing flavor. If I lived in Anchorage, I could easily imagine being a refular here, and taking folks from out of town here to show them around. Love this place! read more

We came here for lunch, it was not busy but service took a little longer. We didn't order much after being told that the Calamari was not available after we ordered and I was already getting impatient and decided I'll just grab a snack on the way home. Husband ordered fish tacos that I took one bite but it smelled too fishy. Husband seemed not to care and ate as he was hungry and needed to get back to work. Taco chips were stale and the salsa could use a little flavor. We are planning to come back to try their discounted taco day and give it another shot. Listening to him and drinking this margarita made me want to stay longer. The music added a certain class to this place. The decor is kind of glamorous but you dont feel under dresses with Jean's on. My Latin waitress was amazing a pleasant surprise compared to a lot of other places ice been this week. She was helpful with explaining the menu options and very warm and inviting.
