Paint night was fun. We were served soft tacos with a couple of choices of meat, cilantro, pickled and fresh onions...everything was good. My drink was the strawberry jalapeño margarita. I've had better and probably won't ever get that here again. I am not a fan of Mexican food but this place had a warm and cozy ambience and I would come back again for a Christina Wilson paint night. read more

My friend and I absolutely adore Taco Tuesday! Always a lovely spot spot to eat. If you have the chance sit at the bar- we had the pleasure of being served by Steven. He was so kind and professional. He made the BEST Paloma I've ever had and was quite obviously a pro at his craft. (Give the man a raise.) 10/10 love this place!! read more

A little over a week ago, I made a reservation for my birthday dinner this evening. I selected this restaurant as they were able to accommodate a larger party, while I also remembered them having good food from a prior dining experience. They allowed me to bring a custom cake to be served following dinner, which was a plus. Come the night of the dinner; it seemed a relatively empty restaurant, seeing only three other tables occupied by patrons, no larger than a party of four at each table. There appeared to be only one waitress, who was seemingly overwhelmed by the amount of tables she was tending to. The hostess subsequently would have to step in to deliver drinks, appetizers and refill the water carafes. In regard to the service: the hostess seemed nice, but again, was seemingly overwhelmed and barely paid us any mind. Multiple times myself or other members from my table would try to get her attention, she would look at me/them, and proceed to walk away, never to actually return to address us. It took about 25 minutes from the time we sat down (the whole party arrived at the same time) before she even came to our table to take drink orders. Following drink orders, it took another ~15 minutes before returning for an appetizer order. It was almost half an hour from the time we ordered appetizers to order the entrees. Many of us actually asked eachother if we had already placed the entree order as it had been so long. Despite it being an hour from the time the entrees were even ordered, and the rest of the patrons had left, our table was still neglected from any drink orders, refills, or quality checks. In regard to timeliness: it took about 10 minutes from the time drinks were ordered to be brought to the table. Appetizers about 20 minutes, one was seemingly forgotten about (not like the waitress would acknowledge us to bring that to her attention), which later got brought out the same time as the entrees - nearly an hour from the time it was ordered. Again, once the entrees has arrived, no attention was given in any aspects until the completion of dinner. The quality of the food was quite good, as were the cocktails once they were received - but the service is what really diminished the entire dining experience. Once we had finished dinner, we basically had to track the waitress down to remind her of the cake, which was also seemingly forgotten about. Following the arrival of the cake, we were promptly met with the bill. Given the fact that we had been at the restaurant for well over two hours at this point, we quickly paid and left. Again, the food was good - but the quality of service was greatly lacking, subsequently making the dining experience quite unpleasant, as the talk of the table was continuously questions regarding how long it had been since an order was placed, or we had been acknowledged. I do not intend on coming here again with a larger party, or smaller party for that matter. read more

Oh my gosh it's a great Taco Tuesday! I regret not checking in before because this wasn't my first good experience here. I should have taken pictures. . . each time. The only thing I wish is different, is my water refills. I may be more demanding than the usual customer when it comes to water, but I'm fine with tap and I like my glass full. This visit I had the carne asada and baja tacos after some guacamole and chips. The guac is great! I liked the carne asada, but I've never been a fan of carne asada from the start. The baja tacos were epic, I'd squeeze the lime and order again. Next time for me, baja tacos and a new taco selection. read more

Good ambiance, spacious. Jalapeños poppers were amazing. Taco presentation was excellent. The shrimp tacos were unique and tasty. The duck taco was also tasty- flavorful with a spicy kick. As far as drinks... the margaritas were pretty bad. Unfortunately the spicy margarita was so spicy it was hard to drink. Went with an original margarita after and it was really bitter. It has a lot of potential but I probably wouldn't go back. read more

The tacos were good. I got this alcohol drink that was suggested by the waitress and it was not for me. Very minty and vodka was a bit over much. read more

Food - All the food was delicious. The guacamole was fresh with chucks of avocado. A little salty, but I don't like any salt so most wouldn't probably notice. Ambiance - the wood on metal look is very crisp. The decor has very interesting fixtures worthy of mention. There are huge bouquets of bright flowers, mermaids (u think) behind the bar. The music is also very tasteful. A classic, Spanish mix. Notables - all their drinks are done without a blender. If you like those frozen drinks, you're out of luck. The drinks are delicious looking and the bartender seems very capable. Cleanliness - very clean. The booths we sat in were free of crumbs. Service - our server was nice but kind of slow. After our food was cleared we waited quite a while for our check. She was standing at the bar waiting for drinks to be finished. She could have made a couple rounds before the drinks were done. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Downtown Anchorage! The service is always excellent, the food is phenomenal, and the restaurant itself has an ambiance unlike anywhere else in Anchorage. Even if you're looking to grab a few drinks I would highly recommend Tequila 61. The cocktails are delicious and very unique. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Our waitress was very nice and relatively attentive, however, the food was nowhere near Mexican. I'm not sure if the owner has ever had ceviche but what I got was not even close to any ceviche I've ever had. The tacos I had were bland, the tomatoes from the salsa were canned, and the only thing even close to authentic were the beans served next to over done, plain rice with chunks of corn in it. read more

Went in on a whim and was not disappointed. Classy place. High quality menu. Don't come in here looking for basic Mexican. Extremely thoughtful menu. I went with the duck tacos which were absolutely outstanding. The chips and salsa were surprisingly top notch. Just don't normally expect chips and salsa to jump out as amazing like that. I'll definitely be back. read more

We just had dinner here and it was the best! The goat cheese ball appetizer was one of the best things I've ever eaten! The flavors in that dish were so good. The strawberry jalapeño margarita was unusual but delicious. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere of restaurant was great, we will come back at the end of our travels before flying home. Great place to eat in downtown Anchorage! read more

This is not your typical Mexican restaurant. You should not come here if you expect to order a bean burrito and a cheese enchilada. So you are not going to be served chips and salsa when you walk in the door, who cares! This place has a modern hipster atmosphere with a metropolitan approach to Mexican cuisine. The wine choices were exceptional and the drink choices were even better. There are so many choices that you will lose your mind!! We tried several of the small plates with ambitious flavors and natural ingredients. The Thai Rolls were a genius pairing of flavors that at first glace wouldn't seem to work, but do! The Chicharron Mignon was another winning dish that you will not regret ordering. The Jicama Shrimp Tacos, however...one word AMAZING! You must not leave this establishment without ordering these!! Yes, this place is pricy, but what do you expect from an upscale anchorage establishment? I say it's worth the splurge! read more

I absolutely love this place. I have been here a couple times now. They have live music some nights and he's pretty decent. The hostesses are usually really grumpy, not sure what that's all about. But their tacos and drinks are absolutely delicious. So far we've had the chicken fajitas, al pastor tacos, carne asada tacos, duck tacos, horchata corn bread, stuffed empanadas, chicken enchiladas, and beans and rice there and a couple drinks. We never left a piece of food on our plate, everything was super delicious and the ambiance is rustic chic which is awesome. It doesn't feel like you're in Alaska, it kind of reminds me of some hip place in California or something. Would definitely recommend getting your taco fix here. Tacos are half priced on Tuesdays except for the duck tacos. Tuesday's are my favorite day of the week!!!! read more

Amazing Mexican food, and delicious drinks. This ended up being one of my favorite restaurant in Anchorage, even though I didn't have any fish, and I'm a big seafood fan. Every dish here was beautifully prepared and tasted just as good. Even the chips and guacamole were executed well, as I've been to many places where just the chips are off. Staff was very attentive and friendly. Wish we had a similar restaurant in California, as this place was fantastic! Edit came back for dinner, ordered the Sushi Mignon, OMG, amazing!!! Also tried the chicharron mignon, which was delicious but not at the 10 out if 10 stars of the Sushi Mignon, but close. We came for valentines day and they only had a fixed menu, but it was delicious. I had the steak with chimichurri sauce and my hubby had the shrimp and scallop poblano pasta. First course was a mushroom and anchino soup. Everything was delicious and cooked just right. Our server was Joanna who was very attentive and personable. The decor inside is really classic and modern. Super clean and the acoustics still allowed for a private conversation. Dessert was red velvet cheesecake with edible flowers and a chocolate covered strawberry. I will definitely try this again when they have an open menu. Awesome. A place to visit if you go to Anchorage downtown. Food quality , presentation and service is very good

This was a lunch meal for me and my wife. It far exceeded our expectations for food quality and service. The ambiance was good too. We got shrimp ceviche, tortilla soup, and carne asada corn tacos for sharing. We could not quite finish it all despite marveling at the originality and quality of each preparation. If you like interesting, flavorful, home style Latin food, try this restaurant. I'm serious. read more

Finally a trendy-decor inspired place in Anchorage--it's just a shame that the service was so extremely behind and slow that it was slightly tainted. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for 4th of July weekend, and our entire experience (for a slow restaurant) took almost an hour and half. Food was the best Mexican inspired cuisine I've had in the city, but after the hostess seated us, we never had a server come, and she ended up taking our order before disappearing. read more

You have a lot of choices in Anchorage. This one seemed good. Price is hard to gauge here as most places charge a lot more than the lower 48. We were able to get a table rather quickly as we were there for a short stay in between a cruise and a train ride to Denali. We both got the 3 tacos. Mine was with chicken and my wife's was carne asada. Surprisingly very dry and not as much flavor as I would have hoped. Other menu items may have been better but we really wanted to keep the bill low. read more

Really like their salsa and guac side. The salsa was spicy and had a hint of Serrano pepper. They really know how to make salsa. The guac was very satisfying and it was served very cold which worked for me. The guacamole came with some type of sweet potato chips instead of corn chips -- turned out to be a great healthy option. Tried the El Diablo and their house margarita, both were a terrific drinks I will be coming back in the near future. *side note - the tacos seems really yummy read more

Tequila 61 - El Diablo is a satisfying concoction - Mexican Near Me - Anchorage, Alaska

Raw chicken in my wife's sandwich! Cold beans for a side dish! I haven't been this disappointed with a restaurant in a LONG time!

They're new, so here's to hoping they work out the kinks! We showed up around 6:30 on a Friday and though they were busy, were able to be seated immediately. Between the three of us, we ordered a spicy margarita ($14), a smoked Manhattan ($16), and a draft Mexican beer ($6). Both cocktails were good, though definitely overpriced. The beer was not served with a lime, and when asked, one was brought to the table in a paper napkin. It took forever to put our order in, and yet another age to get the appetizers. Hopefully their service staff will step up their game, because there was very little checking in on us throughout the night, and service was definitely S-L-O-W, SLOW. Rosa tartare- definitely the highlight of the night! Tuna, fresh and ripe avocado, mango - delicious! Probably needs a few extra pieces of bread, but we managed. Tortilla soup - tastes like straight enchilada sauce with some tortilla strips thrown in. I think I noticed some cubed avocado in there, but this was definitely a miss. We didn't even finish a cup of soup between three of us. Tacos - my dining partners both ordered the carnitas, and I ordered the duck. Their tacos both arrived visibly different. One had red onion + cilantro whereas the other had diced white onion and very little greenery at all. When my duck tacos arrived, they also had red onion + cilantro to match one set of pork tacos. We all agreed that our meat was correct, but the toppings were obviously not. The "fill level" of the three tacos on my plate were very disparate. The accompanying salsa also tasted suspiciously like the enchilada sauce / tortilla soup, but without the tortilla strips and avocado. Salad - I ordered the berry salad and had the wrong one delivered to the table. Despite the fact that there was not a single berry on the plate, the server tried to convince me that it was, in fact, the berry salad. When the correct salad arrived, it was super tasty, though the wait meant it arrived after my entree. I'll be back after at least a month, to give them another chance. I want to like you, Tequila 61! Please, please, please improve the soup and salsa before then. read more

Service was not up to par. It was about 10-15 min before the waitress noticed us at the table. Maybe she was having a bad day, as I've had those days when I was a waitress when I was younger, but it felt like we were an inconvenience more than guests. We ordered the guacamole and chips, rosemary potatoes, and the coconut shrimp tacos with the taco shells being a type of turnip. We ordered the Morena which deceivingly advertises infused grapefruit, sparkling champagne flavors, but the tequila is a smoke flavored tequila which overpowered the other flavors. Unless you know your tequila you don't know the drink you're getting. We suggested they put a tequila description for the different tequila they offer. The food was flavored with an overpowering of spiciness. The atmosphere was comforting as far as scenery though the music was loud which required people to talk loud, which is fine but it felt like the ambiance did not match the atmosphere. Overall the experience was ok. I do feel like the effort to be different causes the restaurant to unintentionally neglect the client base they serve. It could be due to the restaurants infancy in the downtown scene that caused this awkward experience, but i definitely wasn't left with an exceptional experience. Maybe I will try again in a couple months or so to see if there is some improvement. As for now, I'm wouldn't recommend to friends. read more

Tequila 61 - Presentation of the food was great, Taste and service, not so much. - Mexican Near Me - Anchorage, Alaska

When I first walked into the gastropub, I was immediately impressed with the ambience! Amazing! Even though the service was slow for a weeknight (and it really wasn't busy), I give 4 stars b/c the food not only presented artistically, it was deeeelicious! I didn't have a big appetite so I order from the small plate menu - and with friends ordering small plates too, we shared our food to explore the menu. I can't begin to describe flavor explosion our mouths experienced - just go! Look forward to ordering from the large plate menu - chicken mole I'm coming for you! read more

I think I should have known something was off about this restaurant when I ordered coffee and it was already pre-milked. That's right, the service staff delivers your coffee with milk already added. Now I'm not sure if this is just me, but I was under the impression that everyone has their own preference of milk to coffee ratio. Personally I prefer more of a shade like Tuscan leather, but I was delivered ash wood colored coffee, as if the waiter was someone who knew me well enough to understand the deep intricacies that come with how I like my coffee. Also the sugar caddie was stocked with 4 sugars and 2 splendas as if there had just been a rush. I ordered a margarita. Now this is the interactive part of the review. When the waiter returned with the margarita there was a hair he had noticed on the glass touching the salt rim. Did he: A. Comment on the hair, remove the margarita and then replace it with a new one? B. Ignore it and wait for me to notice and complain? C. Comment on the hair and remove it from the glass in front of the table as if it weren't a big deal that there was a hair on the salt rim where I could put my lips? You guessed it. C is the correct answer. Lastly I ordered rice and beans with my tacos (which were delicious) and they weren't delivered. No worries people make mistakes, so I told the food runner that I wanted rice and beans. I never received the rice and beans. Some say that the rice and beans are still in the kitchen waiting for me. I can't return to them though, as I will probably not step foot in this restaurant again. If I wanted bad service I would've gone to Taco Bell as while the food was good, it wasn't good enough to deal with the awful service. read more

Had a first good impression a couple months ago when my husband and I decided to come here for drinks one Friday night... we sat at the bar and all worked well: drinks, food and service. The atmosphere is just what I like in a place so I was very happy I went and tried on my own even with a few negative reviews on google and here on yelp. This second time it was a bigger shot. I chose this place to celebrate my birthday with my friends... once again: Didn't disappoint! I'm so glad I called and made reservations here. Everyone was satisfied with their foods and our cocktails OH MY! one better than another now... can't skip talking about the service, or should I say our very own awesome server! He was FANTASTIC! Tequila 61 - El Diablo! Best drink ever. - Mexican Near Me - Anchorage, Alaska

The fiancé and I had been wanting to try Tequila 61 for a while! We actually stopped by during lunch a few weeks back, per Google they were open but when we arrived we were disappointed to find out they didn't open until dinner. Fast forward to now and we decided to go out to dinner at this new Anchorage establishment. Me, personally - I am a Mexican food aficionado. My fiancée, he could take it or leave it because his biggest complaint is that there are never QUALITY Mexican restaurants; just the usual bean and cheese drowned, American-Mexicali overload. We were hopeful that Tequila 61 would fill this void, and I suppose for many - it may. For us however, we were not sold. We walked right in on a sunny summer evening, their door was wide open. We were greeted at the front by a pretty Latina girl. We asked if we could get a table and she asked if we had reservations. We told her no, and she seemed worried and said: "Ooooh, well, let me see what I can do for you.." My fiancé and I stared at each other, confused: the restaurant was bare and almost every table was open. Finally she seemed to find an open table for us (hehe) and brought us to our table - complimenting me the whole way. (Brownie points - more about brownies below.) After a glance at their menu - we were SHOCKED at the prices, especially for the drinks. This place lives up to its name and surely has many high quality tequilas, but my god. We paid $15 for a margarita! The margarita was good, great in fact. One of the best we'd ever had we decided. We shared it and promptly ordered another. After the second margarita was finished, neither of us had the slightest buzz - and I am a lightweight! I will say this, at any of the other Mexican joints in town one margarita will have us both ready to "paaaarttty" - so the fact that neither of us had even the slightest buzz, and for $15 no less - makes you think. For dinner, the menu is small ish and it doesn't offer your usual chips and salsa fare. Fiancé got some bacon wrapped shrimp that was served with a cheesy mushroom risotto. Nice presentation and certainly tasted good, not really reminiscent of Mexican food, or even Mexican fusion...but savory enough. Not something I would find myself craving, though. I got the pork carnitas. No rice and beans here, no side at all, in fact - which was disappointing. The slow cooked pork was tasty, the tacos overall were good but not great. I didn't care for them being doused in pickled onions and seemed to have some softened orange peel or something that I picked out of them. After we were served our food, we didn't see our waitress again for almost 45 minutes. She walked through the room several times as we waited for her to clear our plates, but seemed to look right through us. Eventually she came back and apologized, stating she did forget about us. She said she worked a double that day. Forgivable, fiancé and I both work customer service and we were relaxing and talking anyways - anxious for a dessert menu though. We decided on a brownie, a mutual love of ours. Hate to say it though - this brownie wasn't our fave. It was suuuuuuuper soft and moist, almost fudge-like in consistency. We prefer a chewy cake texture for our brownies. It also had an ice cream of sorts on top? Not very flavorful, and partially melted by the time our waitress brought it. It also had a cinnamon flavor, a common Mexican delight (chocolate and cinnamon) but we didn't love that either. It was topped with "cotton candy" which was interesting and unique. All in all I do not think we will go back. This place is clean, which is hugely important...it's nice, but to us seems jumbled and un-focused. It seems to be Mexican fusion but sort of misses the mark. The decor was nice, part of it seems super fancy and part is super casual - the prices make it seem fancy, the service and food are semi causal at best. I realize we are in the minority here because most of the reviews are wonderful for the most part. That's ok though. Different strokes for different folks! read more

I can't say enough great things about this restaurant. I was in AK for a marketing event and the owner noted a comment that I made about tacos (LOVE them) and another speaker made about tequila Ana quickly invited us to the place. The atmosphere was very trendy and cool and we were seated quickly and well taken care of (6 people) The drink menu was overwhelming (in a good way) only because the flavors were so unique and the waiter steered me away from a drink I probably wouldn't have liked, which was appreciated. Ultimately we all got different drinks, took sips and passed them to the right so we could try them all Recommend: smoked scallop experience Any of the 3 desserts are a hit The tacos are small but flavorful read more

Don't waste your money. Went here for dinner on our 1st night in Anchorage. The first table they sat us at had the sun blaring in our eyes so we asked for a different table, which they allowed (this was right after we sat down) but the second table wasn't much better. One server appeared to have all the tables. The guacamole was delicious, though they did charge us an extra $1.50 for some additional chips so we could finish the quac. That was the end of the deliciousness. The salmon tacos (which two of us ordered and then we were told they only had "one more"), had zero flavor. The much more expensive Blue Cheese Salmon that my mom ordered (after she could not get the salmon tacos) didn't have any blue cheese or any flavor either. My husband had the steak tacos and they lacked flavor too. Overall a waste of $120. read more

First time and definitely not the last. Lots of great things about this place. One is the ambience, classy and creative at the same time. I would come back here for drinks but not really so much for the food. I like their "diablo" drink. So good and refreshing! Food wise, i wasn't disappointed nor overjoyed about their food. We ordered a lot. We were in a big group and i would say the food was fairly priced even though the taste was just so-so. We had the chicken enchillada (big plate!), duck tacos, seared tuna, and the fried cheese( which was my favorite), the pork belly and so much more that I can't recall their names. But one good tip is to get the Diablo drink. Another tip, GO GET THE DIABLO DRINK! Lol! Ill come back for the drinks and maybe order less food. The price of the drinks are really high, some are worth it, some aren't. read more

The ambiance was really nice and I had very high hopes for this place, and the drink I had was very nice. However, the service was subpar at the very best, I saw our waiter about twice our entire time here and he wasn't that friendly. I got handed an appetizer plate with smeared blood on it and when I gave it back I wasn't even given a replacement. The food was ok, but the rice and beans were super bland and I found a hair in mine. I hope my experience was unique but when it was this bad I doubt it was.
