We stopped by Crimson for lunch, and unfortunately, I left feeling pretty disappointed. I ordered the Alaska Seafood Chowder. It was okay, but honestly, nothing special. I've had much better chowders elsewhere, especially when it comes to flavor and overall quality. The biggest disappointment, however, was the service. Our server wasn't very knowledgeable about the menu. During our meal, I asked three fairly basic questions: "What flavors of hot tea do you have?" "What is your soup of the day?" and another simple menu-related question. Unfortunately, he couldn't answer any of them. I have experience working in moderate- to high-end restaurants, so I understand that servers aren't going to know the answer to every single question. What bothered me was how the questions were handled. Rather than saying something like, "I'm not sure, but let me find out for you," our server simply responded, "I don't know," and left it at that. For me, good service isn't about knowing everything--it's about making the effort to find the answer and making the guest feel taken care of. That effort was missing during our visit. Overall, the food was just okay, but the lack of attentiveness and product knowledge from our server really took away from the experience. Unfortunately, the experience was so rude and disorganized that we ended up leaving before ever getting to eat. When we arrived, we were greeted by a man in a black shirt who was immediately rude and kept interrupting my mom while she was trying to ask about a table for five. We were told there would be a wait, which was fine, but from that point on the service only got worse. We sat waiting for about 20 to 30 minutes and were never given menus or any updates, while other parties around us who were also waiting were being helped, given drinks, given menus, and kept informed about their table times. While we were waiting, we overheard what I assume was a manager, a man in a maroon shirt with tattoos, updating another party about their reservation. He told them that their reservation had been messed up: instead of having one table for six as requested, the restaurant had them down for a table for four and a separate table for two. If they wanted to actually be seated together at a table for six, they would have to wait another hour, plus an additional 40 minutes for food. Hearing that made it pretty clear that the lack of organization and communication wasn't just happening to us. After we had already been waiting, the man in the black shirt finally came back over. Instead of seating us, he told us it would actually be another 45 minutes to an hour before we would even be seated and receive food. I asked if that included the time we had already spent waiting, and he responded to me in a very dismissive and demeaning way, saying that we would not even be seated for another 45 minutes. At that point, my mom and stepdad decided we should just go somewhere else. My mom asked if the drinks could be comped given the poor communication and how the situation had been handled. His response was basically, "You'll have to take it up with them," referring to the bar. When I asked if the bar was a separate business, he ignored the question and walked away. My stepdad then had to go up to the bar and pay for four drinks, which took another 10 minutes despite there being two bartenders and very few people waiting. I can't review the food because we never got the chance to try it. We came in hoping to have a nice dinner to celebrate a college graduation, and instead we got rude service, poor communication, and a complete waste of time. We would have gladly come back another day if the staff had simply been honest, respectful, and organized from the start, but after this experience, we won't be returning. read more

From the moment we arrived, we felt overlooked and uncomfortable. We ordered several social hour items, including the deviled eggs, Brussels sprouts, and chicken wings. The Brussels sprouts were overly crispy, and while the wings had good flavor, they were undercooked and gummy in texture. The service was equally frustrating. We had to ask for silverware and plates, waited a very long time for drinks and food, and our dirty dishes remained on the table throughout the visit. We watched other guests receive their meals, drinks, and checks before we were even served. The bartender, Greg, did not seem attentive to tables and appeared more focused on the bar crowd. We even placed a second order that never arrived and eventually had to cancel it. By the end of the night, we were one of the only couples still waiting while others who arrived after us had already finished and left. One of the best parts of the evening was the manager coming over to personally speak with us. We truly appreciated being acknowledged, heard, and treated like valued customers. I ate here a few times well staying at the hotel - two times for breakfast (which was included with my hotel status), and once for dinner. Breakfast was fine - fresh avocado toast with really delicious tomatoes, and a filling crab omelet. However, dinner was the real star! I got the seafood chowder, which was warm, hearty and had good portions of seafood in it. For my entree, I opted for the scallops - and they were so delicious. I've been trying to figure out how to recreate the dish, because the combination with the beans was truly just lovely. I did think it was a bit odd that I couldn't take a drink to my room without the bartender walking me to it - they mentioned it was some Alaska rule? However, since I was traveling alone and the hallways in the hotel were a loooooooong walk, I just opted not to get another drink and called it a night instead. Familiar enough with Wildbirch Hotel for work purposes, I'd been intrigued by Crimson's decor and ambience for months. It's warm, inviting, classy, and clean feel invites you in. Comfortable seating made the dining experience cozy. Service was impeccable. Our server was friendly, engaging, and attentive without being too present or hovering. She explained menu items and specials; and didn't forget a thing! Who I assume was the manager, made sure to stop by and see how we were enjoying everything - I could tell he wants to make sure all patrons were having a good experience. The food was delicious! I had the roasted chicken special with mashed potatoes and asparagus. All prepared perfect. Chicken was moist, the sauce a unique savory flavor, and asparagus just right - not too stiff, not at all mushy. Combined with a lovely view, cheap and ample parking, I'd definitely recommend trying Crimson! I believe it's locally owned and operated- and can confirm personally they support local business. We came here for Mother's Day. Big mistake. Our server was nice enough, but she should have warned us the first few times she came to the table that they were out of what seemed like half the menu. We ordered drinks and even an appetizer before being told they were out of several entrees. I had my eye on the short ribs, but had to settle on the steak. By the time we put in our food order, we had been seated for about 30 minutes. I'm not sure why things were coming out of the kitchen so slowly. It was about 45 minutes before we got our entrees. So glad we got the fries for an appetizer. They were decent. It reminded me of jojo potatoes. They also brought out pretzel sticks on the house. These were also decent and probably the hottest temperature wise item we received. The steak wasn't hot enough for the herbed butter to melt. I wanted medium rare, but I got medium. It was the same for my brother's steak. His was over as well. The "risotto" it was served on was more like rice pilaf. It wasn't creamy at all like you would expect. It also wasn't seasoned. It was very bland along with the broccolini. I had to load up on the salt and pepper, which I don't do normally. My partner got the cauliflower steak. It didn't look appetizing enough for me to try, but he reported it being bland and the best thing on the plate was the cheese on top. No way were we going to stay for dessert. We finally got out of there at the 2 hour mark after waiting forever for boxes and the check. I don't mind slow service if the food makes up for it. Quick review update - Nothing has changed here. Mediocre food and service. I ordered a couple of eggs and smoked salmon. Eggs were cooked fine. The smoked salmon was old. It hadn't quite started to turn, but was very close. Almost didn't eat it, but decided I'd probably be OK. Server brought me two single serving jams for my toast. When I came in service was initially not good. The host and cashier stared and unsure what to do. No one acknowledged my presence. The regular bartender Jeff finally appeared. What a friendly guy! Excellent memory for names. He made up for the indifference of the hostess. I ordered the burger and fries and beer. Beer was very good, local beers on draft from Midnight Sun Brewing Company was very good. The burger itself didn't have a lot of flavor, but a little salt and pepper fixed it. Trivia: what brewery currently holds all their taps? This is going to be a hidden gem. At this point, it's obviously brand new. Everything looks pristine. The TVSs have prompts to put in the DirecTV setup. But the fries, the burger, the old fashioned --are above par. The service is great. The food arrives quickly. Lots of natural light and a decent view of the inlet. And, while often overlooked, the chairs and seats are very comfortable. The menu has a little bit of everything so no one should be disappointed. Everything I saw come out looked and smelled amazing. The seafood stew looked to have a healthy portion of mussels. Couple weird things: 1. Already mentioned the TVs 2. I was never asked or given water even though there was a bottle of water right in front of me. 3. The smashed fingerlings are deep fried potatoes. I expected something different. 4. Their speaker for music is a JBL under the liquor selection which means at the bar the music is loud and everywhere else, nearly nonexistent. 5. They don't give you a draft list when you sit down. Let it be known that this was my first time dining at Crimson for an anniversary dinner. To start on a positive note, our server -- a tall bald gentleman -- was extremely nice, professional, and knowledgeable about the menu. Great customer service definitely helped the experience. We began with the Brussels sprouts, which were actually delicious, until we unfortunately found a gray hair in the dish. That immediately took away from what started as a strong first impression. For the main course, I ordered the Crimson Burger with sweet potato fries. The burger itself lacked seasoning and tasted underwhelming. Letting the burger rest is one thing, but this felt like it sat too long, leaving the center cold. A simple combination of kosher salt, Tellicherry black pepper, and fine smoked garlic powder would have helped create a flavorful crust and elevated the burger significantly. The roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetable medley was the biggest disappointment of the evening. The chicken was extremely dry -- almost like chicken jerky -- and noticeably small for the price point. The mashed potatoes lacked butter, salt, and overall flavor, tasting more like boxed instant potatoes that had been slightly dressed up. The restaurant itself is beautiful, open, and has a nice atmosphere, but the bench seating was uncomfortable. I also noticed food debris under our table. The restaurant wasn't especially busy, and cleanliness is one of those details that should always be maintained throughout service. Honestly, the best part of the meal was the Espresso Martini and the Sprite. With restaurant prices being as high as they are today, the quality of the food should meet or exceed customer expectations. Food shouldn't just be pushed out for the sake of service -- every dish should be tasted and checked, not only by the chef, but by the kitchen team as a whole, so everyone stays aligned on quality and consistency. We went to Crimson to celebrate our wedding anniversary and noted it in the reservation, but there was zero acknowledgment. Not even a simple "happy anniversary." That was the first disappointment of many. Right after seating us, our server handed us menus and started to walk away. We asked about specials, and she said there weren't any -- but then casually added, "Oh, we're out of a couple things... I know one of them is the short ribs." We had specifically come for the short ribs after hearing how good they were. She never told us what else they were out of, and the conversation just ended there. We waited 45 minutes for our food. During that time, she stopped by once to refill water. At the 40‑minute mark she told us our food would be up "shortly," and when we mentioned the long wait, she blamed it on their ticket system not printing orders correctly. Again -- not something diners need to hear. When the food finally arrived, both entrées were a complete miss. * The fish and chips were burned, almost black, and tasted like old oil. * The crab mac and cheese had no flavor and only a few tiny strings of crab. We almost never send food back, but we had to send both dishes back. They were truly inedible. The manager apologized but then launched into excuses: the sous chef had worked 30 days straight, he needed a day off, the kitchen was overrun, they were short‑staffed, etc. Instead of making us feel better, it just made the situation worse. What we needed was a sincere apology and an effort to make things right -- not a rundown of their internal problems. Saying we wouldn't be charged for food we couldn't eat isn't a gesture; it's expected. Telling us to "come back in a week and try again" was the final eye‑roll moment. Anchorage has too many great restaurants to waste another night here. For fairness: the mushroom risotto side was good, and the sidewinder fries were fine. But the main dishes -- the whole point of the meal -- were a disaster. This was supposed to be our anniversary dinner, and it ended up being one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had in Anchorage. We won't be returning. read more

Absolutely loved having lunch at this new restaurant located inside the Wildbirch Inn downtown. Ample parking, bright spacious dining area, great view, excellent service, delicious food, and reasonable prices. We shared sweet potato fries. The chicken salad was spicy and delicious with unique potato fries. Steak salad offered soft steak and tasty dressing. Even the ice tea was tastier than anywhere else I've had it in town. The hotel itself that this restaurant is attached to is going through some transition however, the restaurant is very good. I do recommend it. The ambience is kind of modern chic and the food is very delicious. Very flavorful and I take on some of the flavors combine together. I did also like the service as of right now it is "summer" season. They do have a lot of staff coming from other countries for the summertime which kind of gives the restaurant a very diverse ambience. The staff in the hotel, which is connected to it are all super extremely nice as well so I will definitely be back. Definitely pricey, but as you can tell the trend is everything in Anchorage Alaska is going to be pricey. read more

Crimson is inside Wild Birch hotel, with the summer months being very touristy. Our first visit was mid summer with dinner reservations, which we enjoyed. The interior vibe, comfy lounge chairs by windows, tables, bar booths & bar top. We then came on a sunny summer day for lunch & enjoyed the patio. We have tried Breakfast, & recently the Sunday brunch we didn't even know they had. With just learning about Sunday brunch, at $49 which includes mimosa or mocktail. We of course gave it a try. Every Sunday the brunch starts at 11am. With make it your way egg bar each time. With the rest changing weekly. Lots of fresh fruit, key lime pie excellent, muffins, carnitas tacos, sautéed vegetables, salad, smoked salmon Benedict, waffle potatoes good as well, waffle bar, charcuterie board. I want to encourage the Sunday brunch but I think to get the locals they will need to expand the selection a lot for the cost. Service for the most has been good thus far very friendly. read more

I saw a video short on Social Media a few months back and i was intrigued so i put it on the to try list. My wife and i have been just about everywhere in town and it was our anniversary so took a chance and decided to go here. We walked in and it was nearly empty as they had just opened for dinner, but by the time we left it was packed! What others have said is close to our experience they are short staffed but the staff is excellent and attentive as best they can. There were two servers with a few large parties and still managed to make it tolerable. I mean if I can give a brief synopsis, this place is waaaaaaay better than it has any business being, I think of some other local places that are flat terrible and still people go there. They have an extended bar menu and specials, they even have their own beer brewed just for them. I ordered what is more or less a Sazerac, all i can say is it was one of the best I've ever had, if i didn't have to drive id have had another. My wife had a toddy also amazing. I started with the chowder and let me say the best chowder in the world is in Sitka and Ketchikan, this was just as good. Fire. My wife had the filet and yeah on, totally on, like one of the best steaks she's had she said. Me i had the scallops, they had this nice citrus under tone to them and were cooked to perfection. The sides also all, just amazing her risotto had big chunks of mushroom for example. We got a free desert and also very creative and really good nice and small perfect to end the meal.
