A solid option for when you're craving mongolian BBQ. Compared to the previous restaurant, Great Khan's this is a bit of a downgrade. They removed many of the toppings and sauces from the buffet. A word to the wise, don't pay up for the larger size as they still give you the same amount of noodles. If you are a vegetarian they can clean the stovetop for you, however when it's crowded it can really put back the line. They top all of the noodles with teriyaki sauce at the end so regardless of what you put on it, they all kind of come out tasting the same. read more

This place is at the mall we've came here a few times. We like it because you make your own. You buy the size of bowl. Then you put any meat and veggies raw in your bowl. The meat is frozen when you get it. Then you walk around and you give it to the chef and they cook it right in front of you on a large grill. I like that you can get tofu in case you're vegetarian. It really can't be a bad dish since you make it yourself and add whatever you want. read more

Not sure if they are the same people who had the Gengis Khan BBQ downstairs at the mall, but it's basically the same stuff, same setup, same look, more seating but now it's call Sun Gate BBQ. They moved in at the same exact except on the second floor of the mall. We went in for dinner in a Wednesday night, so not super busy, but I guess busy enough. They didn't have anything. If you have been to one of these Mongolian BBQ spots, you pay, they give you an empty bowl and you fill it with whatever you want, meat, veggies, sauce and they stir fry it with noodles for you. Well, they were out of steam rice?!?!?!? WHAT???? Out of steam rice? Ok, whatever, they were out of chicken, and the guy is slowly bringing it out, they were out of beef, no tofu, spinach, pineapple, mushrooms. Arghhhhh..... I know they just opened, it's a new business and it takes a min to get it running smoothly, but I with u didn't pay first so I could just walk away and go somewhere else. Tears of joy are running down my face knowing that my beloved Mongolian BBQ is BACK! And with a new name! The layout flows much better, there's plenty of available seating, and the restrooms are super close. The food is just as awesome and yummy as I remembered but I felt like there were less toppings available. Maybe it's just me. I also didn't like this new thing they do, where they add the noodles at the top of my food mountain that I worked so hard to build and balance. At least they did a good job at not toppling anything over! However, when they start cooking your toppings, they toss all the noodles back into your bowl again, leaving almost no reason to add them to the bowl in the first place. You also have to be a bit vocal to the guys cooking your food, like if you wanted more sauce or if they completely ignore to cook the extra noodles you have on your tray. The other problem we had was that our cashier had issues with basic math when it came to giving change - and was also being stubborn about it but hey, being a mathematics genius isn't required with money. Husband and I used to frequent this place before the pandemic so we were excited to hear it was open! We discovered some changes that aren't are favorite but understand. You obviously no longer can make tour own plates of veggies and meats as it is prepackaged for you. Also you cant mix meats i.e. chicken and beef so just can pick one entree meat with preset veggies. All the veggies you can cram in that bowl will be cooked on a huge high temp grill. They add Terriaque sauce at the end but I asked them to hold it and added soy sauce instead. We love Mongolian BBQ! This place... Not so much. :( All of the Mongolian BBQ places I've been to in SoCal and the Central Valley have been all-you-can eat. This is the first one I've been to that isn't. The customer service here was seriously lacking. Like none at all. No thank you from the cashier and the dude refilling the meat rudely grumbled at me to stop getting some so he could refill it. You can say please, thank you very much. The selection of toppings and sauces was skimpy. We waited about 20 minutes in line to get our food cooked before we sat down. The food itself was pretty good but I got parts of someone's tofu and mushrooms in mine. I don't eat that stuff! Customer service is make it or break it for us. We go out to dinner almost every night and there are plenty of other places we'd rather spend our $. We'll get our Mongolian BBQ fixes when we're down South! read more

There were chicken, pork, beef, and lamb for you to choose. Next comes the veggies - around 5 varieties. Then 4 sauces - don't go overboard because they add an additional spoon of soy when cooking it too. You take your bowl to the chef, who will cook your food on those traditional Mongolian circular grills. They add the noodles at that time, so you don't have to try to pile your noodles on top of the overflowed bowl. Service was fast and friendly. Regular bowl - I got beef and lamb, both really good. Come here all the time and the manager hassles me about my mall discount asking me to bring something from my store to prove I work here when clearly I have my store keys around my arm, only too tell me I can get a fountain drink and I wanted a bottle of water I already pay for my food -still didn't get my mall discount and I don't drink sodas, they always give me a bottle of water what made this time any different !! I'm pretty sure Sun Gate is the reincarnation of Great Khan's, which used to be on the first floor of Sunvalley Mall before they renovated that space into a food court. Given that it's Mongolian BBQ in a shopping mall, it's almost unfair to compare this against better and more expensive Mongolian barbecue options. So if you set your bar appropriately low, you'll probably enjoy Sun Gate BBQ. My main criticism is that you can REALLY feel the cost-cutting measures at every step. They make a BIG DEAL about not pressing down the food to fit more into the tiny bowl and I have a hard time believing they're main concern is health code violations; no other restaurant is so zealous about this. Clearly, they rely on keeping people from taking more than a few ounces of food. The thing is, everybody who eats there seems to know that if you don't overfill the bowl, you're going to get an anemic micro-meal, so the result is a perpetual heap of spilled vegetables and tofu blocking your path toward the grills. Yuck. Also: no napkins beyond one per bowl unless you ask for them, and (not kidding) they won't give an extra napkin up front ... you have to go through the line first, and then pester the busy cashier for one afterwards. Same story with water, unless you want to spend $2 on bottled. But the fact is, their food is really pretty good compared to the other options, so they must know they can save a few bucks in ways which make you feel like a schlep who dines in a shopping mall. For this I'm pleased to bump up their average a bit with a three-star review. read more

First off, I'm not A HUGE fan of Mongolian BBQ, so I don't have such a high expectation to begin with. This place is not bad. The sauce is great, I got terriyaki sauce when I came here. This is one of those places, where you're supposed to stack as much as you can, but then you always feel like you're not stacking enough. So to make thing's better I feel like they should just stack for you and cook that way I'm not mentally feeling like I'm loosing out. They have plenty of frozen meat, which makes it hard to fit as they're not wet and flexible. Instead, you will really have to press down the meat to make the most out of it. I argue that the mushrooms are great, but hey its just mushrooms. This place makes it super saucey- like post cooking, it was so saucey- it was like noodle soup. Lol read more

I went back today for lunch and my opinion has changed. While they only have very limited options for toppings, you can use this as the perfect opportunity to load up on what they do have. Go for the large bowl with extra noodles! $13.59 is the price including tax and it was sooo worth it. Be sure to stack your bowl high and go a little overboard on the self-serve sauces. Also tell the cook you want extra teriyaki sauce. When it's done put some sriracha on top and enjoy some of your meal now and some later! I had enough for a large lunch and a decent sized dinner. I still agree that they'd be even better with more options, but here it is definitely all about how well you can build your bowl. read more

For being lunch time- you would expect the place to be busy. Not so- no one was eating here. I used to go to Great Khans ALL the time because there's just something about picking your ingredients & seeing it prepared in front of you. I've come here occasionally too whenever I crave for Mongolian BBQ, but sadly I'd have to say I won't be coming here anymore. Here's why: I was in line a couple days ago and there was a guy in front of me putting things in his bowl. Suddenly, I see in the corner of my eye a worker yelling at this guy saying he wasn't allowed to use his hands to push down the food. I get it, it's a health code violation. But can you be any less rude about it? He continues to yell "if you don't like it, go eat somewhere else!" The guy puts his hand up to signal that he'll stop, finishes loading his bowl and goes in line to get his food prepared. The worker at this point is still agitating him and they get into a nonverbal/gesture argument (middle fingers and such). Instead of putting food from his bowl on the grill, the worker dumps it and hastily goes to the counter to give him back his money. At this point, I'm disgusted with such unprofessional behavior and didn't even want to eat my food anymore. Yes, both parties were at fault (more the worker than customer), but it should've been handled completely differently. I've always ignored the service here because it's the type of establishment you only come to because of the food, BUT, please learn a thing or two about dealing with customers. The new location feels a bit more spacious and welcoming. The customer service is a tad strict. Everything is self serve. You pick your meat (more like frozen meat curls) and your won veggies. Discovered a piece of plastic in my food today at Sun Gate BBQ. I brought it to the attention of the manager and the person running the register. The manager told me it doesn't look like any of their containers, so she didn't know what she could do. Well, you could serve me food that doesn't have plastic in it! She then pointed out that my meal was almost all gone, so she could only give me a small bowl. I'd only gotten a small bowl in the first place, and there was still 2/3 of my original meal in the container. The manager accused me of placing plastic in my meal and insisted that she shouldn't have to give m a full replacement meal because I'd "already eaten most of it", wouldn't take responsibility for any of it. I told her that was not good enough, and I just won't come here again. She responded "ok" and walked away. Worst customer service ever. For the record, I wasn't looking for a refund or a replacement meal to begin with. I was just bringing it to their attention. But instead I was accused of contaminating my own meal and trying to work the system to get free food. read more

Initially I was okay with this place. I got my food and waited to get it cooked. A worker(who I later found out was the manager) was very rude and unprofessional. A few other customers and I witnessed him treating another customer so badly. When I complained to him later he told me that this one customer always comes in and doesn't follow the health regulation. Instead of mistreating and humiliating a customer, as a manager, he should've refused the service. Also, THERE WERE NO SIGN SAYING CUSTOMERS CANNOT USE NAPKINS TO PUSH DOWN THE FROZEN MEAT! Every Mongolian BBQ place I've been to allows customer to push down their frozen meat with NAPKINS to make more space. If you don't want people to do so then put up a freaking sign instead of giving customers attitude! Especially if it's someone's first time there they're not going to know! Anyways, I left my number with the manager and the owner actually called me. He apologized and said he will deal with the situation accordingly. I hope he does because we're all paying to eat at this place and no one should be treated as if they're asking for free food! If the workers don't like their job , then they should quit.
