It's a smallish place, seats less than 40 I think, unless there a hidden room I didn't see. The decor feels like you stepped back to the late 80s. The food was excellent, I was not expecting it. We ordered soup and a couple of different dim sum from their menu. I was kinda expecting some microwaved stuff. To my surprised, it was freshly steamed. Food was great and I learned the owner was a chef in a dim sum restaurant in the south bay before and makes it all himself. I can't rate any of the other things on the menu, haven't tried it. Hmm.. unfortunately the food is no longer what it used to be. We tried the daily express lunch special expecting it to be cooked fresh to order, but it was clearly pre-cooked and simply reheated (or sat under a hot lamp) when served. The food arrived lukewarm and lacked freshness (I could've just went to a fast food joint), which was very disappointing. Whether you're in town for jury duty, work, or play, here is a good lunch spot. I walked into Aberdeen Café during the lunch hour. Booths lined the wall on one side, and the bar was on the other. Korean pop music played softly while other customers ate lunch. I was seated at the booth and was served a glass of water to start. I got the #2015 Salt and Pepper Fish Filet lunch special with hot and sour soup of the day, egg roll, and substituted-in fried rice. I was served the hot and sour soup first. It was a wonderful appetizer. The classic spicy pepper and sour vinegar were balanced. The bits of crunchy mushroom and soft tofu added interest and texture to the thick broth. This was comfort in a bowl. The entree was delicious. The fried fish was hot off the wok when it arrived, steaming on the plate along with fried rice, broccoli, an egg roll, and some sweet and sour sauce. I enjoyed the fish; the heat of the jalapeno slices and the salt elevated the light crispiness and mild sweetness of the fish. The fried rice was light and fluffy with bits of egg. The sauteed broccoli had a solid crunch, and the vegetable egg roll was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This was a good, satisfying lunch at Aberdeen Café. This is my 2nd time here, both times was because I got called for jury duty. I have an Asian stomach so I will much prefer Chinese food and I found this place. Ordered their lunch special, my favorite, sweet and sour pork with fried rice and their dessert from dim sum menu, coconut pudding. They are really good on picking the meat because the meat is tender and juicy, unlike most other places use lean meat only that will make it very dry. Coconut pudding is just ok. Unfortunately their dim sum menu doesn't have much selection, otherwise I would have order dim sum instead. Overall price is very reasonable comparing to the rest of the Bay Area. For a quick dose of Chinese cravings, I'd go here. You will get the basics here especially during jury duty which can be stressful at times. What I like is you can taste it is freshly cooked. Due to the lack of great dim sum options in the Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill/Concord area, I had my eye for a while on this little "café" in Martinez that serves dim sum. But before getting to the food, let's talk about parking. Since the restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Martinez, parking can be a bit tricky. However, if you don't mind walking a few extra blocks, you can usually find free street parking in the nearby residential area. When we walked in, my first impression was that the restaurant felt quite dark and could benefit from a bit more lighting. The ladies who served us were friendly, though, so service-wise I have no complaints. Their dim sum selection was fairly limited--maybe around just 20 items or so. We ordered 7 dishes for variety. Overall, the dim sum was okay. The standouts were the pork siu mai and the custard buns. Normally, shrimp dumplings are my favorite, but I didn't quite love them here. The dumpling skin/wrapper tore apart so easily when we picked it up with our chopsticks--maybe they were steamed too long? I'm not sure. That said, I actually enjoyed the flavor of the shrimp and scallop dumplings, but they had the same wrapper issue, which left me feeling conflicted. Given that there aren't many dim sum options in the area, I was still surprised to see their prices, which were comparable to high-end dim sum places like Koi. So, I think the overall price point felt a bit high for what we got. While there were some areas for improvement during our dim sum brunch, I would still like to give this place at least another try. One item I'm especially curious about is the Peking duck--I've seen photos of it on Yelp, and it looks great. Maybe next time. read more

I've been here on multiple occasions for both dine-in and take-out and the food is always solid! We pretty much only order their dim sum, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but I'm hoping to try more in upcoming visits! They even have a lunch menu on the weekdays that seem like a good deal, is it comes with an entree, soup, egg roll, and rice. Any of their dim sums that include shrimp are great! I especially love the shrimp/scallop, the hargow, and the shrimp/cilantro! The protein inside is big and juicy. The pork bun and sticky rice are decent! Long overdue review for Aberdeen Cafe. We first went to Aberdeen last year and have been there half a dozen times now. Aberdeen's menu is a combination of dim sum and Cantonese food. We've probably tried about a third of the menu and everything we have had was solid. This last time, we visited for Saturday lunch and the restaurant was at capacity. It took a long time to get through lunch, so a word of warning if you're in a rush. A few things we like to get: Peking Duck - this is a very good version of this dish and it is the best one we've found at this price in the Bay Area. Skin is extra crispy but meat is bone on so you need to work a little. Instead of thin wrappers, they serve a half duck portion with 6 small steamed buns as default. For dim sum, we've been happy with everything, including Shrimp Dumpling, Bean Curd Skin Roll with Pork and Shrimp, Pan Fried Shrimp and Chive Dumpling, Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf, and Steamed Egg Custard Bun. One thing I am always a sucker for is Scallion Pancakes. Unfortunately, I'm usually disappointed, but they make a good one here. read more

Wanted to get some dim sum and my regular place was busy, looked up for another place that wasn't too far from me and found Aberdeen Cafe in Martinez. The place is pretty good size that has good seating, you can see the cooks make the food in certain part of the Restuarant. The servers were nice and friendly, looks like family owned. They have some dim sum items and a variety of dishes that are very good like garlic string bean, house chow mein, and the fried calamari. Service was delightful, as the whole staff was friendly, polite and courteous. My daughter said their potstickers were the biggest she has ever seen and they truly were gigantic. We also ordered the turnip cakes, shu mai, chicken feet, honey walnut shrimp, and sticky rice in lotus leaf (which they did not cheap out on and loaded it with Chinese sausage and salted egg, which most places leave out). I came here during lunch time for my jury duty. Very close to the court house, no need to drive. Shirley was very friendly towards me and other customers. I ordered the salt and pepper squid and cha siu fried noodle. Their food is serve hot, not just warm, which I like. The salt and pepper tasted very nice I even ate the green pepper in the tray. The cha siu fried noodle is not the typical kind of cha siu fried noodle in Chinese restaurant but is plenty flavorful. Overall the portion last me through the day and without need of dinner as well. The restaurant itself has normal dining tables as well as a bar. While some tables are smaller, there are tables large enough for a group of jury to eat together too. The open kitchen also let's you see the chief cook, and smell the food while it's being cook. I have seen this place pop up on my Yelp searches for a long time. Decided to drive over from Vallejo for lunch. When I walked in I was greeted immediately. Place is well organized and clean. Decided on the Mongolian Beef lunch. It was REALLY GOOD!! Good flavor, good sized serving. Hot/sour soup was good. Also ordered Sui Mui. Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back here again and visiting the quaint little town of Martinez, California (where the Martini was invented!). Not your traditional dim sum place (traditional for me being a large dining room with several round tables, and native Chinese folk pushing carts filled with a variety of dim sum offerings). Instead, this was more a-la-cart off the menu with a smaller variety; albeit, more popular varieties of dim sum - including pork bun, shrimp and pork siomai, spare ribs...to name a few. This had me a little concerned at first, but it all tasted legit! ....maybe even fresher since it seems it was made to order. Aside from the dim sum, we also ordered bbq pork fried rice, half Peking duck, and sizzling rice soup - all so yummy, and at a reasonable price! Note: we went here for lunch on the Saturday of MLK weekend and had a hard time finding parking. Restaurant itself didn't seem busy, but took a minute to find a parking spot about a block away from the resto. If we had more time and not in such a rush, I would've loved to explore the shops around. read more

This is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. The two people with me were also deeply disappointed. I searched Vallejo, Benicia and beyond on yelp for best-rated Chinese food. Yelp reviewers! Are you kidding me? Hot and sour soup was an unappetizing color, and tasted just okay. Peking duck was mostly bones with very little meat. Chicken salad was fried breaded chicken with a pile of iceberg lettuce with commercial wontons thrown on top. Dressing was sickly-sweet. The only thing that fell into the okay category were the potstickers. Just don't know what to say other than completely confounded by the good reviews. All three of us not-fussy eaters were really just disgusted. I really never give reviews this bad. I don't like to do that to businesses. But I feel really let down here by yelp reviewers who lead me astray. Just hugely embarrassed to have taken my guests here. I don't feel terrible about knocking this rating down a bit! read more

The location is great as we came on a Sunday during the Martinez farmer's market. Aberdeen Café is located right smack dab in the middle of the farmers market on Main Street! Hubby and I thought the food was pretty mediocre. We ordered shrimp and pea sprouts dumpling, scallops dumpling, chicken feet, and the pork filling one wrapped in tofu skins. They were pretty tasty, but all the skins were too thick in my opinion, and the dim sum with shrimp and with scallops were mediocre in quality. We also had the eggplant in garlic sauce and vegetables chow mein which we thought were better than the dim sum. The service was excellent, the server was friendly and very efficient. But I doubt I will come back just for the food since there are other dim sum places in the Bay Area that are better. Enjoyed dim sum at a quiet booth-like setup last saturday. Started off with spring rolls (from the appetizer menu). This was crispy but lackluster due to the thick skin and very ordinary fillings. Things improved with the bbq pork bun with nice authentic dough enveloping bbq pork. The taste of the pork was slightly strange, quite mild and lacked intensity but the overall dish was okay. Siu Mai had excellent pork/shrimp portion and tasted fresh and well-made. The bean curd skin roll stole the show with its abundance of wood ear mushroom, generous shrimp bits and pork. The outsized roll had good flavors and was really well made and above average. Tea is not complimentary. Service was friendly and rest room very clean. read more

We decided to try this place out and came in an hour before they closed (honestly we had no Dora!). But our server was sweet as she greeted and seated us immediately and got our drinks while we perused the menu. They offer a lot of Chinese food and some dim sum selections which we wanted to try out. We got some fried wontons, shu mai, lunch plates of lemon chicken for me and honey walnut shrimp for hubby. Both came with hot n sour soup which I really liked. Everything came out hot, fresh and quickly too. The portions were generous as we had a lot to take home for later but everything was so delicious.
