88 Bao Bao has taught me to not be so judgmental without trying it first. So glad we decided to try it because it has become one of our top spots for quick-n-easy Chinese food. With so many different types of dim sum to choose from, they also have an impressive variety of main courses, such as stir-fries or ramens. All so delicious! The establishment is small, but very accommodating. To dine in, you can automatically order/pay at your table, and within a few minutes, a friendly waitperson will promptly deliver your order. You can even watch your order being prepared through their large viewing glass. 88 Bao Bao reminds me of Din Tao Fun in Las Vegas, but on a much more subtle scale. However, when it comes to food comparison, I think I prefer low-key subtle over high-end foo-foo. But that's just me. Try it! read more

Came here on a weekend for late lunch and ordered the steamed vegetables and meat dumplings and a pan fried pork bun. The meat in the pork bun was so little that I was chewing on dough the first few bites. The bun was pan fried to really crispy though. I expected a bit juice from the meat but it was just a dry bun. We also ordered the steamed vegetable and meat dumpling-they were mediocre and again the filling was tiny. I didn't taste much vegetables in them. I really liked the garlicky sauce on the table. I was a bit disappointed with the food and I remembered the soup dumplings that my friends ordered for take out were good, so I guess maybe I ordered the wrong dish. The pork xiao long bao was very bland in my opinion; I had to rely on the vinegar for some flavoring. The skin is very thick, and there is just simply not enough broth in the xiao long bao. I expected more from this, as xiao long baos are their signature dish. The beef rolls were mediocre; the beef rolls I've eaten are usually dripping with hoisin sauce or oil. This one is very dry. It's really crunchy though, so that's a pro! The Shanghai shrimp chowmein was the best dish out of all. Each bite was a rush of flavor, I can taste the wok air!! As I am a thick noodles person, these noodles were perfect for me. 88 bao bao, you gotta slide me the recipe for this chow mein, hahah! The pan fried pork buns were good. Loved the broth for this one, and they were pan fried perfectly. However, the meat was more dense and compressed than the traditional ones. The chocolate xiao long baos was far from what I expected. I know this new trendy chocolate xiao long baos roots from din tai fung's menu, and there have been countless recipes of them online, the most popular being the Lindt chocolate wrapped in the xl bao skin. I'll stop beating around the bush. A bite into 88 bao bao's chocolate xiao long bao, it was Lindt. I don't know if I'll ever pay 9 bucks for something that is so simply made. We had chicken chowmein , black garlic ramen and the chocolate dumplings and a taro boba drink. The chowmein is delicious tasted fresh , the ramen was also good but the broth/soup it came with could be warmer /hotter . Not as good as expected. I came here on a Saturday and this place was busy. It is in the same plaza as Trader Joe's and has plenty of parking around. To order, you do it at the register. It can be a bit overwhelming if there is a long line and you don't know what to get. It is best to step aside to look at the menu. The line moves fast. We ordered various dishes: - Egg Fried Rice with Chicken was our favorite! It looks simple but it tastes good. -Wonton in Chill Oil: I usually love this dish at other places, but I was disappointed. Something about the taste of the dumplings did not appeal to me. They were bland and very basic. -The Fried Shrimp had a lot of batter and very little meat. It was good, but it was dense because of the thick batter. -Cucumber Salad: The cucumbers were big and garlicky. It tasted fresh, but it was also okay. -Popcorn Chicken: The chicken pieces were very fried. I've come here a couple of times and I like the chocolate bar and their garlic green beans... With chicken, shrimp... They're very delicious. Other than that, though I haven't really enjoyed the dumplings so much but today I think really frustrated because what I ordered and what I got were two different looking items. In general, it looks like a crispy dumpling that was golden brown and I got a very light colored something that just didn't have the right texture. I think I'll probably just stick to the green beans if I come back, but I think I'm done because of the food. I will say other things to enjoy the Ramen and I've had other items that I also thought were pretty decent servicing to be OK. There were no complaints. This is the second time I've came to this location for takeout. The food at 88 BaoBao is good. Services are relatively quick. The restaurant is not huge but does have a couple of outdoor tables. I love their stirred fried rice noodles with shrimp. Just a nice simple dish. And of course all their dumplings are great. My daughter loves their spicy wonton. I found 88 Bao Bao as family live nearby a few years back. They're located in a plaza with a Trader Joe's and other restaurants and shops. Parking is super easy as the lot is large. For the restaurant itself, they're a decent size inside and have tables for 2 and 4. Once you walk through the front door, the cashier and menu is right in front. I typically have ordered dishes to go but have also eaten in a few times. The staff is friendly and helpful when I couldn't decide. After trying what seems like half of their menu, I have decided their Shrimp Dumplings are my favorite dish by far. I have in the past just ordered two orders of this to go. Their XLB and Pan Fried Dumplings are pretty good as well. Overall, this is a good option for authentic Chinese cuisine in this area which traditionally has not had many options. read more

The Walnut Creek/Concord area has seen a recent boom of dumpling restaurants, with about half a dozen opened within the last 18 months. 88 Bao Bao joined the fray about six months ago by opening a new shop in the Oak Grove Plaza, right at the border of the two aforementioned cities. My family and I came here for dinner on 03/31/2024. It wasn't too busy when we walked in at around 6:45pm. The staff greeted us and told us to sit anywhere we please. We opted for a table towards the back. Menus and ordering sheet were brought to us by one of the staffers. Unlike full-service restaurants, ordering was done at the counter with the marked ordering sheet, and payment for the meal was required in advance. We ordered five items - Crab and Pork XLB, Steamed Shrimp Dumplings (har gow), Shaomai (shumai), Popcorn Chicken, and Cucumber Salad. The total, with T/T, was about $72. Here's a quick recap on what we got: 1) Crab and Pork XLB - Good. The XLB skin had the appropriate thickness and held the filling well. The filling was juicy and flavorful and the crab and roe mixture on top tasted fresh. Personally, I prefer the crabmeat and roe be mixed in with the pork filling. Also, no julienned ginger was offered. 2) Har Gow and Shu Mai - Both were tasty. They were made the traditional Cantonese way. Chopped fresh bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms were added to the har gow and shu mai fillings. These additions are a rarity nowadays, even in dim sum restaurants. The only negative was the har gow skin was a tad thick. 3) Popcorn Chicken - Okay but not great. More seasoning needed. 4) Cucumber Salad - Cool and refreshing. The taste of the marinade was more on the sweet side. Service we received was terrific. The staff was enthusiastic, welcoming, and helpful. Overall, 88 Bao Bao is a nice addition to the Walnut Creek/Concord dining scene. Their dumpling offerings are authentic and delicious, and the pricing is reasonable. I wish they had cheung fun, because I really love cheung fun. It's one of my must-haves when I check out a Chinese dumpling house. The service was really friendly and helpful. 88 Bao Bao had finally opened a location here in our area of the Bay. It's located off Treat and Oak Grove, on the same side of the shopping center as Trader Joe's. It's on a stretch where there's plenty of other eating spots abound too, so there's certainly no shortage of fooding to be done here. This location isn't huge, but had some seating outside too right in front of the store at least, so can sit double digits of people there if need be. They have their takeout freezer on the side for those who are interested in the takeout version of their offerings. The staff here are pretty friendly, and answered questions we had. The pricing of everything is alright, comparable to the other bao and noodle places we now have plenty of in our tri-city area, which really had none of this specifically years back. So you better know this place has to be good if it wants to stay towards the top of its game. Menu isn't too complicated, but most noodle and bao places don't have huge menus, a la Lanzhou and also Noodle House, so it's fine. The good: The grilled squid was quite delicious. Comparable to some of the other decent dried squid we have in the area, though, this one is pretty different because it's soaked in sweet chili sauce, which I could take it or leave it, may need to get it on the side next time. The baos here are pretty good, also known as soup dumpling. Good ratio between the wrapping, the meat, and of course plenty of soup inside. This is a solid bao for any bao fan. The meh: The beef slices appetizer was okay. This is not how it's traditionally supposed to look or taste like. The texture was all wrong, and in generally, just didn't really have much flavor to it at all even with the half efforted soysauce. Feels like they didn't really season it all that well during the cooking process. The other thing here that was rather disappointing was the noodles, which I was sort of excited for with a bao and noodle place, but the noodles were just so bland and tasteless because the soup was just not done well. The noodles themselves were, acceptable, but everything else in it was bland and not good. And as for the beef in the beef noodle soup, it was the same slices of disappointing appetizer beef, but just slapped into the noodle, and it wasn't even any better as a result. Not what I'd come here for. It's great to see another option available for noodles and dumplings in the area. The dumplings here are definitely the star, and I would come back for them. However, claiming to be a noodle place too, it was just not my jam whatsoever, so that part was not what I had hoped for. For the casual adventurous eater though, this will probably be a fine experience, but for the more traditional cuisine seekers, the noodles really are a bit of a let down. The pork XLB was good, but it didn't come with that red vinegar. The pork lumpia was probably my least favorite as it could have been crispier and there was a moment I had to double check that the inside was fully cooked. It's definitely a great place to get your dumpling fix. The first time we went to an 88 Bao Bao was the one in Dublin, and we remembered really liking the restaurant so we were super excited to find one opened in Concord too! So many things look good on the menu - we went with the pork xlb, pork pan fried buns, and boiled pork and cabbage dumplings. Everything was delicious but be aware that the flavors of their xlb do differ from places like din tai fung. The pork flavor in all the dumplings and buns was strong so you'll love it if you like pork. We would love to come back and try out the noodles in the future!
