Sitting alongside Clayton Riad in Concord is a slightly battered box of a restaurant that looks like it dropped there right out of 1960. This unpretentious little place is simply called "Hunan", and the interior is as time worn as the outside. Please don't misunderstand, the place is clean, and the table meticulous. The staff are extremely friendly, and service is accurate and fast. But it's the food, folks. Like the restaurant, the food also looks and like the Americanized Chinese food that was ubiquitous in the 1960s, but it is WONDERFUL. We ordered "Deluxe Family Dinner D". We got Sizzling Rice Soup, Pot Stickers, String Bean Beef, Honey Walnut Prawns and Chow Mein. And were instantly transported to 1965. The fresh food was pure Chinese comfort food. We wanted some American Chinese food, so we decided to go back to this place and give it a second try (we tried it long time ago and we weren't that impressed). Here's what we ordered this second time around: Kung pao shrimp: pretty good, but we got more vegetables than the shrimp, so I'm not sure if the value of this dish was good compared to the price. Also in general, I don't like sweet-and-sour flavor profile, and the sauce they used on this dish reminded me a lot of that, so personally, this dish was just not my favorite. Eggplant with hot spiced garlic sauce: first of all, the portion was great, and the eggplant was cooked to perfection. The eggplant was juicy, thickly sliced, and tender. The sauce was pretty good too. I also like the addition of slivered wood ear mushroom. But what felt weird to me was the inclusion of water chestnut into this dish, which to me generally is not something that I would find in an eggplant dish like this. It was not necessarily bad, it was just a strange. Three deluxe vegetables: I'm glad to know that we could choose between brown sauce and white sauce when ordering this dish, and we decided to go with the white sauce. The white sauce was tasty but it was too thick (too much starch?). Also they were super heavy-handed with the water chestnut and it was kinda overwhelming. Vegetable chow mein: just like my previous review, the chow mein was delicious. I like the noodles which were cooked perfectly and still bouncy and al dente. The flavor was really spot on as well. No complaints. I would get this again. Hunan general tsao's chicken: pretty much this dish had the same flavor profile as the Kung pao shrimp. And the amount of cubed water chestnut in this dish was incredibly overwhelming. I think the water chestnut completely took over this dish, and I don't even think that water chestnut would be normally found in general tsao's chicken. Again, the water chestnut was not necessarily bad, it was just highly unusual. Two things that are appealing to me about this place though are the price, which is relatively low compared to other local Chinese restaurants, and the portion, which is really generous. read more

I do not recommend it. I've gone twice and the food hasn't been warmed up all the way. My friend's food was also not warmed up all the way. I went right when they opened. There were no customers. Really nice customer service I felt bad and didn't bring up the food not being warm enough. It came quickly! We have been coming to Hunan for probably 35 years. Am guessing it has changed owners or management in all that time. But we have seen familar faces for the last several years. While Hunan has a steady takeout business, DH and I prefer to dine in. Nothing fancy, but good friendly service, generous portions, and overall good food. We especially like their Hot and Sour Soup, but skipped it on our last visit. A hot day ... too hot for soup. A complimentary plate of egg rolls was a good way to start the meal while waiting for the entrees. We ordered Sesame Chicken and Mongolian Beef, also steamed rice. (We typically pass on fried rice.) DH really wanted chow mein noodles, one of his favorite dishes here. But with calories in mind he skipped it this time. Even without the soup and noodles, we had leftovers to take home. Find it hard to believe, I have never reviewed Hunan on Yelp. An oversight ... or maybe deleted? At any rate, I am happy to leave a four star review! read more

This is my favorite food place! We typically go during the lunch specials ! I always get the sweet and sour pork and my husband always gets the orange chicken. His family has been coming here for years. And now we started going there with our family. Our one year-old loves their chow mein.! Their hot and sour soup is so delicious. Today we came back for lunch and had three dishes. We had prawns with string beans, prawns with broccoli, and fried salt/pepper pork chop. The two prawn dishes had too much sauce this time (sauce has starch) and starch is bad for blood sugar. We especially loved the salt/pepper fried pork chops. I normally stay away from fried foods but have to admit this pork was better than fried chicken. It wasn't greasy, had a wonderful crunch, and had no bone or grisly pieces. Just wonderful pieces of pork chop meat that were tender inside yet crunchy outside. We shared a bowl of rice and they were so generous with the rice that it was really a couple of servings instead of one single serving. We always spend 50-60 here for three dishes for lunch and always have enough to last another meal or two. I think this is currently our favorite Chinese restaurant in the East Bay. Service is always friendly and fast. The restaurant smells greasy but it's a real authentic place with good vibes. To our surprise, Hunan Restaurant serves amazing food! They even include a free egg roll with dinner. We had the chicken chow mein and hot & dried chicken wings--both excellent. The noodles were chewy, nutty, and flavorful, and the wings stayed crispy despite the sauce. Friendly service, great prices, and generous portions. I so wanted to give this place a high rating, I really did, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Let me first start off with the fact that this was my first meal of the day as I'm currently on a fast so as you can imagine I was really looking forward to eat. The place is pretty clean, bright with lots of windows, very friendly staff with fast and great service, hence why I'm giving 2 stars for this overall Yelp review (I'd give 2.5 stars if I could but Yelp ain't havin' it). Service 5/5 For starters, they served a veggie egg roll per person which tasted pretty standard and as expected; served with sweet & sour sauce to dip in. 3/5 For an appetizer we ordered fried chicken wings (pictured) which arrived pretty quickly and sizzling hot. Though it had a perfect crunch, it lacked seasoning and some of the wings were even less seasoned than others. 3/5 Next up was the House Fried Rice which was lukewarm in temperature. They were a little stingy and didn't fill up the entire dish which is strange to me because at every Chinese spot I've ever been to it's literally the one thing they pile on (either that or noodles). Another thing I noticed was the meat was not chopped smaller (not necessarily good or bad), but at least there was a lot of it. Not much flavor either but when you do get a hint of it, it's not bad. 2.5/5 Sweet & sour pork was the absolute worst dish. Though doused in sweet & sour sauce, the meat retained its crispiness but that's where the positivity ended. How can I describe the flavor, you ask? Easy: THERE WAS NONE. Nada. How could that be, you ask? Wasn't there sauce all over? Listen, I dunno how it happened, but it did. 1/5 (maybe even a zero? I wouldn't give it to a homeless person begging me for food--THAT is how bad it was. Honey Walnut Prawns - the only saving grace. It has *some* barely there flavor, but was still palatable. Did wish it were a bit crunchier though but it's ok. 3/5 The host who greeted us and took our order was really nice, funny and friendly. We ate here once and were not huge fans. It does seem to be a popular place among the locals, but the service was a little lax, the food was unwhelming in taste and presentation and the ambiance was definitely not great. The restaurant always looks abandonded every time we drive by it, we even have to question if it's still in business. The sign for Hunan is almost not even legible or visible. I definitely think if they spiffied up the outside a bit and put some money into making it presentable, that would help bring in more customers. Maybe we'd give it another try. It's been a while since we've dined in at Hunan (thanks to the pandemic) so we stopped by today for lunch. Hunan is a neighborhood favorite. They do a brisk to-go business and have their die-hard fans. We are definite fans as well. It is a family run business and cater to the Chinese-American palate, and they do it well. Their beef continues to be the most tender beef we've tasted in any Chinese restaurant. Their hot and sour soup is tangy and loaded with tofu and eggs. We had their lunch specials today and their portions continue to impress. Everything came out hot and fresh. Still trying out Chinese restaurants in the Concord area and realize that this place is called Hunan but most of their food is Cantonese. We started with some basics like beef chow fun, cashew chicken, and Peking spare ribs. The chow fun noodles might be the thickest we have seen for a while and definitely fresh noodles. The Peking spare ribs had a nice garlic flavor. Also complimentary spring rolls! Service was efficient and we did not wait long. Lots of to go food orders. Bought 2 chow miens last week, tomato beef and house. Tomato beef had 3 times the usual beef! Up half the night with severe diarrhea. Guess the beef was going bad so they were giving extra. Ate the house chow mien after removing all the beef, and I was fine. Thought I was going to get a lot of work done, not cooking over the weekend, lol. I had high hopes ordering takeout from this place given the long history of positive reviews, but let me tell you it was BAD. I know American Chinese food is typically nothing special, but when I am craving that greasy, crispy, deliciousness, that's what I expect to receive Even for American Chinese food, this was the worst I have ever had. If you've been to Mann's before and are familiar with the poor quality of their food, imagine that but ten times worse! The "salad" I ordered was a ton of giant pieces of rubbery chicken on top of a thin layer of soggy lettuce that was just completely soaked in the pool of dressing at the bottom. The "crispy" chicken I ordered was wet, slimy and mushy. It also smelled really, really bad. The only positive thing I can say about my meal is that the steamed rice was made properly -__- I will happily go to Panda Express, or Asian Express in Pittsburg next time I want some actually fresh and tasty (American) Chinese food. read more
