a cup of coffee and a bag of noodles

The Chinese Kitchen is right off of Clayton Rd, in a stretch of shopping centers that are fairly older, and many people would probably just drive right by if they're not familiar with the area. There's actually a couple of places here that I would visit from time to time, but for some reason, I just never been down to The Chinese Kitchen even though they've been here for some time now. From the outside, it really doesn't look like much, but once you get inside, well, it probably actually looks even worse, so be warned, lol. It's definitely a family run style restaurant, and it doesn't appear they offer dine-in currently and just focused on takeout, so in that sense I guess the decor doesn't really matter. The staff here are pretty friendly though. The lady at the front was helpful. The menu here is a pretty typical Chinese restaurant menu. The prices are okay. A bit pricier than I had expected for a place like this, but at least the portions here are good so it makes up for it. It's comparable to at least New Lim's just down the street off Clayton Rd as well. I ordered a couple of things today, the combination chow mein, and a hot and sour soup. The hot and sour soup was pretty good actually. Just enough flavor of both the hot and the sour, and the stuff inside the soup was plentiful. If you're someone who likes tofu, they put quite a bit of it in here. They also put in a couple of shrimps, and the other usual ingredients that would come in this soup. It won't blow you away by any means, but it's a solid hot and sour soup. And as someone who has had a lot of hot and sour soup, this one is definitely on the better of the spectrum. The combination chow mein was not bad. The ingredients were plentiful inside there. Plenty of meats and such to accompany the noodles itself. Makes for a tasty dish, and there was a lot more of it than I expected, so the pricing aspect was at least reasonable in the end. I do feel that the noodles themselves felt a bit overcooked, as it came out a bit mushier than I would prefer and doesn't have that same kind of doughiness you would like from the thick noodles. Either that or the noodles they're using were not fresh. I mean, it wasn't bad, just could've been better. The ingredients other than the noodles were good though. Certainly one of those situations where you don't judge a book by its cover. While the decor is very runned down, and probably not a place you would walk into casually, the food they offer does leave something to be desired. I haven't tried some of their other dishes yet, but flavor wise, they are there. I would want to come back and try some of their other dishes in the future.

This little place is the quintessential Mom and Pop Chinese restaurant. I really don't like reviewing food to go, but it looks like to-go food is their primary market. I went with some chow fun and some chow mein. The chow fun had the best actual noodles I have had in some time - multiple layers and more noodles than meat and vegetable. The flavor was a little bland and the dish was missing that wok hei flavoring. The chow mein was similar - a little bland and I actually prefer thinner noodles. Still, the cost was right (just around $20 for two dishes) and it does look like they are really trying. I'll probably be back to see what other dishes are like. This was the third time trying to get food (they were closed previously), so be aware that they appear to keep inconsistent hours.

I was craving Chinese food and so happy to have found this restaurant! I ordered chicken chow mean, sweet and sour chicken, beef broccoli, and pork fried rice. They crammed those little boxes filled with steamy food goodness. Everything was hot and fresh! They do party trays but you have to call a day ahead for notice. The food is perfect for a party so I'm planning to go back! I sat and waited for my food and could hear the sizzling sounds in the kitchen. Inside there are about 5-6 small tables to sit. The manager's name is Waylin and he was very nice!

For anyone coming, the parking can be really bad as it shares probably 20 or so spots with several other restaurants. It's near impossible to park nearby with the alternative of parking near the Panera's or even the target. There's plenty of tables and seats inside, and it was pretty slow when we dined in. Convenient televisions on two different sides where all the workers were casually watching, and quite the chatter in the kitchen where they're all watching the World Cup. That doesn't really affect service however as they're quite attentive when called for. We ordered the salted fish and chicken fried rice, and the medium bbq platter with char sound soy sauce chicken. All very delicious! The only thing is that they can bit on the pricier side with $20 for the fried rice and $30 for the bbq plate. Overall, I thought grand cafe definitely scratched our itch for Cantonese style dining experience. It typically comes with great food, good service, and a bit of nostalgia from being from the Bay Area.

The interior was clean. A couple TVs on the walls were showing different sporting and news programs. Their menu featured a wide array of non-Americanized Cantonese fare. We decided to do family style and got half a dozen dishes to share. They were: Beef Filet with Mixed Mushrooms, 1lb of BBQ Pork, Fujian Fried Rice, Beef Chow Fun with Gravy, House Pan Fried Noodles, and Salted Pork Bone and Peanut Porridge. Our food arrived in about 15 minutes. Overall, I was impressed by quality and authenticity. Despite the slightly higher price point comparing to other similar restaurants, they didn't skimp on anything. The rice and noodle dishes were loaded with delicious toppings, and the taste was on point. The BBQ pork and the beef filet dish were both fantastic. The meat/fat ratio of the BBQ pork was just right, and the beef filet cubes were tender and flavorful. The porridge was just okay. My mom's version still reigns supreme. Service we received was very good. Our server was very friendly and gave us helpful suggestions. She did forget our iced water, but I am willing to overlook that. I got a chance the chat with staff before we left, they were all very genuine and friendly people. Overall, I was very pleased with my experience here. The food was authentic and tasty, and the staff were friendly and helpful. If you want authentic Cantonese food but don't want to pay the super premium price, this is definitely a good option for you. I will return. 4 solid stars.

I barely give another city a chance to try their Chinese food. I feel spoiled the amount of dumpling places and dim sum places they are in SF. I saw in Downtown Berkeley where you can grab rice rolls along with dim sum. So I decided to give it a whirl. On a Summer stroll I landed in Downtown Berkeley. I usually grab rice rolls at a local business at San Francisco but I decided to try a business which has many locations throughout California and has been around since 1958 and it's called Yin Ji Chang Fen. Inside has many tables and I ordered their wonton soup. The broth was tasty and the noodles were tender almost reminded me of Angel hair in soup form and slurp able . I then had their rice rolls. Upon entering, you can tell this is the kind of restaurant where people host weddings, birthdays, and special events. They even have private rooms you can book with karaoke! They also showcase their crabs and lobsters in tanks at the front, which looked incredibly large and fresh. Similar to another reviewer's comment, there wasn't a hostess available when we walked in, but someone came by quickly and seated us after only a couple of minutes. We were so happy to be seated right by the window, though honestly, most perimeter seats seem to have a great view. We enjoyed our meal as the sun set, and I'd highly recommend arriving or making a reservation about an hour before sunset to fully enjoy the vibe. They have a massive menu with plenty of traditional Southern-style Chinese dishes and dim sum options, so it took us about 10 minutes to finally decide what to order. I'll start with the mentaiko seafood fried rice, which was something I hadn't tried before, but I love anything mentaiko. The fried rice came out as a generous family-style portion. It wasn't bad, but I do think it could have used more seasoning - like a lot more seasoning. More mentaiko, more seafood, and stronger salty-savory flavors would have done the dish justice. As is, it's probably a good option if you're sharing with a young child. The crab crystal dumplings were a nice step up from traditional har gow, which I enjoyed. The salt and pepper fried tofu was exactly what I was hoping for: crunchy and salty on the outside, light on the inside, and not too filling. The squid and green beans from the specials menu were a bit of a gamble, but they turned out delicious. I'd definitely order that dish again. We also noticed they have a weekly specials menu that changes every day, and we're already planning to come back--specifically on Thursday because that menu looks delicious. Overall, Hong Kong East Ocean exceeded my expectations. The ambience and view were breathtaking, the service was efficient, and the food was delicious. I know some people mentioned the pricing being high, but I actually thought it was very reasonable for what it is. Compared to Chinese restaurants in downtown Berkeley, you're paying about the same, but the food is better and the view is unmatched.

Susie lives in the Bay Area and chose this restaurant. I was skeptical about keeping the cost low as we were having dim sum. I was afraid it would be outrageously expensive and not filling enough. She proved me wrong. Excluding the tea and other drinks it came to $30 per person and that included tax and tip. This was cheaper then the last banquet we had and I actually enjoyed most of the dishes here. The only dish I didn't have was the scallop and shrimp dumplings as the order came out with only 3 and there was 11 us at the table. I'm not sure how that was supposed to feed the table. We arrived at 11:10am and to ensure we weren't late. The parking lot was packed when we arrived. Saying that we only had to go up and down two isles to find a parking space. I have to add that the parking spaces were tight. We had the Honda Pilot and it barely fit in a space and that isn't the biggest car out there. We were told that our table was on the 2nd floor and to go to the side door. We walked around the side and found a door. There was not signage indicating it was part of the restaurant. The right side was locked, but the left side was unlocked. When we entered we were warmed with a sigh that said the floor was wet and to beware of slipping. They had a staircase to the left and a elevator to the right. That was a blessing, I know some of our party wouldn't have made it to the banquet with out the elevator. When we exited the elevator we were met by a staff member with their cart waiting to do downstairs. So the elevator serves guests and staff alike. When we got out of the elevator the staff member pointed us down the hall. We stopped at the bathroom on the way down the hall. Once we found the restaurant we were pointed to the back where we joined our party. We had 3 tables in the back which was nice. It beats being out in the open and disturbing everyone as we stood around chit chatted prior to being served. I felt bad for the table of 2 that were posted right next to the wall near our party. They just had a bad table. All the other tables upstairs were farther away and didn't feel like they were in our space. I have to add that the service was great. They kept coming to refill the waters and tea pot with tea, not just hot water. And we never felt rushed. We had a nice table on the edge of our tables agains the wall that we were able to hang our family tree. We are all 1st, 2nd and 3rd cousins and some of us have never met the others before so we really needed a family tree that color coded what generation you were. My favorite dish was the steamed sticky rice in Lotus root, next was the BBQ Pork Buns, third was the shrimp and pork dumplings. Though I don't recall seeing any shrimp in those dumplings.Thought they were big and meaty. My least favorite was the green onion pancake. It just wasn't fluffy and flakey. It was too dense and lacked flavor. And a little greasy. We had 12 dishes and were filled with some chow fun left over. The chow fun wasn't that great. It was filled with beef which was good, but it lacked sauce and the noodles weren't all that.

Went there today and was again blown away by how good this place is. This place really takes pride in serving top quality Cantonese cuisine with reasonable prices. We got there at 10:15 on a Sunday and was seated right away. Ordered the usual dim sum fairs from the cart -- hargao (shrimp dumplings), siumai, bbq pork buns, braised tofu skin rolls (my fav!), braised chicken feet, rice roll with bbq pork, beef balls, lotus chicken wraps, and turnip cake. Each dish tasted better than the other!! My husband has gout but he's able to find plenty to eat without seafood. We ended the meal with mango pudding and it was the perfect finish to our glorious meal, sweet and slightly salty, with a fun note. My only complaint is when the bill came it showed an 18% service charge, so we thought that that's gratuity and didn't give much more. Later my husband saw a posted notice on the door that the service charge is for workers benefit and not tip, so we should have given more tip on top of that, but it was too late by the time I found out (husband didn't tell me until after we got home). After trying all the other dim sum places in the area, I still think this is my favorite. We will be back.
