a cup of coffee and a bag of noodles

The Chinese Kitchen is right off of Clayton Rd, in a stretch of shopping centers that are fairly older, and many people would probably just drive right by if they're not familiar with the area. There's actually a couple of places here that I would visit from time to time, but for some reason, I just never been down to The Chinese Kitchen even though they've been here for some time now. From the outside, it really doesn't look like much, but once you get inside, well, it probably actually looks even worse, so be warned, lol. It's definitely a family run style restaurant, and it doesn't appear they offer dine-in currently and just focused on takeout, so in that sense I guess the decor doesn't really matter. The staff here are pretty friendly though. The lady at the front was helpful. The menu here is a pretty typical Chinese restaurant menu. The prices are okay. A bit pricier than I had expected for a place like this, but at least the portions here are good so it makes up for it. It's comparable to at least New Lim's just down the street off Clayton Rd as well. I ordered a couple of things today, the combination chow mein, and a hot and sour soup. The hot and sour soup was pretty good actually. Just enough flavor of both the hot and the sour, and the stuff inside the soup was plentiful. If you're someone who likes tofu, they put quite a bit of it in here. They also put in a couple of shrimps, and the other usual ingredients that would come in this soup. It won't blow you away by any means, but it's a solid hot and sour soup. And as someone who has had a lot of hot and sour soup, this one is definitely on the better of the spectrum. The combination chow mein was not bad. The ingredients were plentiful inside there. Plenty of meats and such to accompany the noodles itself. Makes for a tasty dish, and there was a lot more of it than I expected, so the pricing aspect was at least reasonable in the end. I do feel that the noodles themselves felt a bit overcooked, as it came out a bit mushier than I would prefer and doesn't have that same kind of doughiness you would like from the thick noodles. Either that or the noodles they're using were not fresh. I mean, it wasn't bad, just could've been better. The ingredients other than the noodles were good though. Certainly one of those situations where you don't judge a book by its cover. While the decor is very runned down, and probably not a place you would walk into casually, the food they offer does leave something to be desired. I haven't tried some of their other dishes yet, but flavor wise, they are there. I would want to come back and try some of their other dishes in the future.

This little place is the quintessential Mom and Pop Chinese restaurant. I really don't like reviewing food to go, but it looks like to-go food is their primary market. I went with some chow fun and some chow mein. The chow fun had the best actual noodles I have had in some time - multiple layers and more noodles than meat and vegetable. The flavor was a little bland and the dish was missing that wok hei flavoring. The chow mein was similar - a little bland and I actually prefer thinner noodles. Still, the cost was right (just around $20 for two dishes) and it does look like they are really trying. I'll probably be back to see what other dishes are like. This was the third time trying to get food (they were closed previously), so be aware that they appear to keep inconsistent hours.

Inside view waiting for takeout. I could hear my food sizzling!

I was craving Chinese food and so happy to have found this restaurant! I ordered chicken chow mean, sweet and sour chicken, beef broccoli, and pork fried rice. They crammed those little boxes filled with steamy food goodness. Everything was hot and fresh! They do party trays but you have to call a day ahead for notice. The food is perfect for a party so I'm planning to go back! I sat and waited for my food and could hear the sizzling sounds in the kitchen. Inside there are about 5-6 small tables to sit. The manager's name is Waylin and he was very nice!

This congee is more savory as seems they use quite a salted congee. Had the preserved egg and pork, as well as pork kidney congee. Enjoyed it thoroughly as it came nice and hot. Also had the rice roll with fried dough, which was nice, but didn't come with sesame sauce or sweet sauce (which you would find with HK Style rice rolls. Service was quick and efficient. I've heard of Yi Ji Chang Fen but only tried it today. I've eaten so much dim sum in my lifetime, so my standard for dim sum may be higher. We came around 5PM on a Saturday and there wasn't anyone really there. It could be because dim sum feels more like a morning or lunch thing, or it could just be because we were there for a very early dinner. Between our party, we shared: - Marinated Chicken and Mushroom Rice Roll - Stuffed Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf - Steamed Chicken Feet w/ Black Bean Sauce - Black Gold Egg Custard Buns - Chicken Feet with Herbs - Dry Style Beef Chow Fun And one Honey Lemon Tea for me. The honey lemon tea was a comfort for the cold day. Maybe a bit too much honey, but still good for the throat during the dry season. The chow fun came first and surprisingly it was not bad. There was a bit of 'wok hey' there and it stands out as one of the better dishes we had. As for the rice roll - I wanted to try something less conventional and I've never seen chicken in rice rolls, so I thought it would be interesting to try. It was quite disappointing though. Their rice roll was bigger than normal in width so with rice rolls being a struggle to pick up already, the bigger size made it an even bigger struggle. Everything just slipped out of the rice roll and it wasn't evenly wrapped. There were some bunched up layers on the edges. I think the chicken just didn't pair that well either and it was lacking in ingredients. Maybe the more conventional rice rolls would be better. For the two types of chicken feet, I normally like the one in herbal soup. If made well, the chicken feet has a nice flavor to it. For Yi Fen's herbal chicken feet, their portion was pretty good, but flavor was less prominent. I enjoyed the chicken feet in black bean sauce more because the flavor was better. Lastly, for the stuffed sticky rice and black gold egg custard buns, I suspect that these are not made in-house, but rather store-bought. The sticky rice lacked ingredients and the rice was a little harder than if made fresh. And the perfectly shaped black buns with a golden brush stroke on top (which I've seen all over the internet) seemed too elevated-looking compared to everything else. I'm not the biggest fan of molten lava buns, but they came out nicely. I didn't have any, but the molten lava custard was pretty runny. All in all, an okay experience. Service was a bit lacking. I don't recommend the dim sum dishes, but if I happen to want congee, I may give this place another go. Apart from the dim sum and rice rolls, the noodles I glimpsed from other customers looked not bad. I wonder if other locations are better.

As I was serving the soup, I noticed something unusual. When I picked it out and placed it on the counter, it was clearly a yellow worm. Completely shocked, I contacted Uber Eats customer service. They only offered a refund for the soup, not the chow fun, because the issue wasn't visible in that item. But honestly, how am I supposed to feel comfortable eating anything else from the same order after finding a worm in one dish? I then called the restaurant to report what happened, and instead of addressing the seriousness of the issue, the manager asked what we wanted them to do and even offered free food. That response was disappointing and didn't feel appropriate given the situation. It's unfortunate because we've ordered from here before and the food was good, but after this experience, we couldn't bring ourselves to eat the rest of the meal. Dinner and our appetite was completely ruined and it came with a price.

I prefer my rice rolls to not have lettuce in them though. Dough Stick Rice Noodle Roll ($7.95): I thought that the dough stick could have been fresher, it was a bit stale by the time we ate it. Pork and Gold Preserved Egg Congee ($7.50): Really well flavored, and good amount of pork and egg. The consistency is thicker than I'm used to but it's still good. Shrimp Wonton Soup ($11.75): Nice clean broth, and the wontons were nicely seasoned. I do wish there was more soup.
