I used to come here all the time from Elk Grove and was always excited to stop by on the way to the Bay Area or for special occasions. Unfortunately, my recent visit was incredibly disappointing. The food quality has gone downhill, the prices have become excessive, and what bothered me most was feeling misled by the billing. A cucumber special was advertised at $5.95, but when the bill arrived, the charge was $14.90. On top of that, an automatic gratuity was added to a table of only three people with one of them being 4 year old. She barely even ate with tea price per person. I don't mind paying premium prices for great food and service, but I do expect transparency. Many of the dim sum items also felt extremely overpriced, $9 for two egg tarts is hard to justify and sadly they weren't worth that. Felt like it was not fresh. It's unfortunate because this used to be a place I genuinely looked forward to visiting. Sadly, I don't see myself returning anytime soon. read more

Both service and food quality have gone down in recent years. We went for dinner on a Friday night. The place was only about 1/3 full (should've left with that obvious clue). We ordered oolong tea, which was just a tea bag in a pot. That alone is OK. However, we suspect that the tea bag was reused, as there was no flavor in the tea and the color was way too light. I informed our waiter. They said it was because the pot didn't have enough hot water, so they filled up the pot with hot water. I said wouldn't that further dilute the tea? They said no, just give it some time. There were 3 of us. We ordered 6 dishes. By the time we're almost done, the tea was still of a light yellowish color. I finally asked the manager. He apologized and replaced the tea bag with 2 new ones. The tea finally had some flavor, but we were done with dinner by then. But that's not the most disappointing thing. One of the dishes we ordered was a pepper-n-salt fish. This is a common dish. It wasn't on the menu but based on previous dining experience at this very restaurant, we knew they could make it. It came with 6 bite-sized fillet, reasonably tasty. The surprise came when we got the bill. They charged us $42 for the dish. Most dishes are $28 or less unless it's fresh seafood (i.e., taken from their live seafood tanks). I probably should've said something but decided it wasn't worth it. Oh, they charged an 18% gratuity and asked for "additional tips" on the bill. I've eaten here plenty of times and they never charged upfront gratuity for a 3-person table. Must be a recent change. That by itself is OK IMO, as long as it is clearly stated in the menu. But it's not. I normally give 20%. But this time I put a line through the "additional tips" line. read more

IMO, the dim sum here is much better than the entrees. The beef chow fun was just okay and it was a bit overpriced at $24. Also note, the tea here is delicious, but they charge $2/person. It has been many years since I have been back here. Came here recently with my boyfriend and his relatives. It was a Sunday evening and they were not packed. We ordered 9 dishes. Food came out fast. Presentations of each dish were plated nicely. The quality and taste were good. Service was excellent. They were super attentive. I think they are known more for their dim sum. We were craving dim sum on a Sunday morning and decided to come here. On the way, I checked the app "Dinfo" to make a reservation or join the waitlist. Luckily, it's not that busy around 11:30 a.m. We were a party of 2, and when we arrived, the staff advised us to go to Suite 219 to check in. Once we reached the door, we were seated quickly. We ordered serveral dishes, including BBQ pork rice rolls, crispy fried tofu skin wraps with shrimp, deep-fried sesame balls, and the Rainbow Sampler Shanghai Dumplings (turmeric skin with crab roe, squid ink skin with black truffle, spinach skin with kale, paprika skin with chicken, beet skin with minced beef, and juicy pork). We also had shrimp dumplings, steamed pork ribs, and chicken feet duo, shu mai, and pork ribs in black bean sauce, along with Anxi Tieguanyin tea. Everything tasted great. This was a pre-set menu for Lunar New Year meant for larger parties. There were 10 courses total priced at $988 for everything. The courses ranged from some more common dishes such as the roasted Peking duck to more delicacy items such as the lobster over egg white which was topped with Bird Nest (a luxury item made from the saliva of Swiftlets). While it did take a bit for the service to begin, once it did it was like clockwork coming out regularly. Some dishes were quite good while others met expectations but that was about it. The price is certainly set for the sheer amount of food presented as opposed to the experience or caliber. Other than dishes being delivered, service was inconsistent and at times hard to get a hold of, we had to as for water and never got a refill on that (however the tea was refilled many times through out the dinner) Their desserts were definitely the stand out as they were quite delicious, I'd definitely recommend the golden egg custard bun. read more

While the food tasted great, it usually takes 20mins + for me to be able to pick up my food even after the Fantuan app shows that my food is ready to pick up. They should definitely look into it. UGH. So disappointed in my experience here. I been here numerous times before and I used to love it but it really fell off. The quality was so bad and the service was even worse. I pointed out an item that was wrong and the server literally told me to "eat it anyways" when I brought it up. I was so confused to the point where I didn't even know what to say. Prices are slightly higher compared to other dim sum restaurants but worth the cost and worth the long wait time if you happen to come at a busy time. We've visited on weekdays and weekends. Food is outstanding no matter the day. They are organized and get you seated efficiently. The ambiance is warm and comfortable. I've only had good service and great overall experiences. Since they're located in a strip mall, there are plenty of parking spaces despite the numerous stores and other restaurants. Koi Palace is a place to go for Chinese fine dining, especially seafood. Prices will be on the expensive side, of course, but you will get authentic elevated Chinese dishes not seen in your average Chinese American restaurants. We were here on a family gathering. There were 13 of us occupying a large banquet table. They have preset banquet menus which will run you $60pp all the way up to $300pp. We opted to order à la carte, with suggestions on their specialty dishes from the staff. We had a lot of incredible dishes. One of the most memorable was a plate of fresh boiled big prawns. The flesh was so succulent and tender that just a mild soy-based dipping sauce was enough to savor the flavor. Another great dish was the fried dungeoness crab with some of the crab meat used to make an incredible soufflé. They have good meat dishes and vegetarian as well. In my family, if you don't eat fast then you don't eat at all. So I had to take pics of our dim sum fast! Our favorite place was Willow Tree in Dublin, which closed years ago when the owners retired. Koi Palace then became our go-to. We even recognize some of the wait staff from Willow Tree there. Overall the dim sum is really good! Standouts were the har gow where the shrimp was very plump and the fried taro that had a lot of umami flavor. It's a large space that's split in two sections. It can get noisy, which is expected. There's two spaces, and it seems the back space has tables for larger groups. This place can get very popular during peak hours. We were there around an hour and a half before closing and were seated right away. But we've waited at least 40mins in the past. One thing I'd like to note is their service charge. I know that's a controversial topic. I'm of the opinion that restaurants should have service charge, like many countries do already, in order for employees to have living wage. I don't think it's right that someone should have to rely on tips in order to survive. But here they have an 18% service charge that doesn't include the tip. There are signs about it up front, but we didn't read them since we were seated right away. So just a heads up when you get your check. read more

Almost two decades since my last review, dim sum continues to impress at Koi Palace. KP still holds its own in a competitive shootout with Mayflower and new comer Pearl Bay Manor. The food is still great, and the advantage is the service. The seasoned staff at Koi Palace are quick to bus dishes and provided 4 plate changes, refilled hot water in tea kettles twice in a single lunch. This is the advantage of being the vetran pros of the dim sum game. The dining room of KP has a classy cozy vibe and for over 20 years Koi Palace has anchored the Ulferts Center with great food. This time, the fish was cooked to a liquid pulp and despite asking specifically if there was any ice cream in the dessert -- for the stated purpose of separate packaging to avoid getting ice cream soup -- there was ice cream, contrary to what they said, packaged right on top of the hot food in a cardboard container. Really disappointed with a recent visit. Koi Palace used to be a go-to, but the food quality has noticeably dropped. Ordered some of our usual dim sum staples and they just felt rushed and lacking in flavor. A bunch of them taste like they were premade and now heated up. This place used to have lines out the door shortly after the opening time but now it still has plenty of seating on a Saturday around lunch time. Usually, I go to the Koi Palace in Daly city but I happen to be in East Bay and went with a group of seven for weekend dim sum. Was surprised that it wasn't busy with a line out of the door as I have seen for Koi Palace in general so we were actually seated right away, even with our larger size group. Presented with the menu where you use a pencil to write down how many orders of every item you would like. We of course, went with a lot of the classics that you would expect from typical dim sum. My favorites were the lo mai gai, which featured sticky rice with meat and veggies wrapped within a lotus leaf, as well as the cheung fu rice noodle rolls. Had the barbecue pork and the shrimp, but I prefer the shrimp. Their steamed dumpling items were very solid and I don't think there was one that I disliked. I think the only dish I was a bit underwhelmed by was the baked barbecue pork bun with a sugar crust. It seemed a little smaller than other places I've had it, and I wish that the crust was a bit more textural and crunchy. Service was efficient and the food rolled out quickly upon arrival. Koi Palace continues to be one of my go to dim sum spots across multiple locations. read more

We ordered the beef chow fun and it was one of the best I've had. It is a little pricey but worth the price. The noodles were softer and lighter than I've had at other restaurants. The beef was very tender and there was a lot of bean sprouts which I liked. We also ordered the Deep fried salt and pepper capelin. My husband liked it but I didn't but that's personal preference. As always, Koi Palace never disappoints. Everything here is delicious, especially my favorite - the supreme soy sauce noodles! Taste is authentically Chinese, service is great, and the interior is just really nice. So many good options to choose from. Another great dish is the salt and pepper tofu - it's this super soft tofu coated in this golden shell with amazing flavor. The Dublin location is definitely the most authentically cantonese. This has been our family's regular place for dimsum and dinner since they opened. Dinner for 4 on a Friday night, overall good flavors (light on seasoning), superb service, comfortable dining experience. +Our favorite- fried egg tofu medallions on pea sprouts. The wok hey was amazing. Not too oily and covered in a light gravy +Runner up- wagyu beef cubes in lime sauce. Beautiful presentation, tender beef with slightly crispy exterior. The sauce was slightly sweet and very appetizing +Honorable mention: concubine chicken (kwai fei chicken). Refreshing and flavorful. +Meets all expectations- seafood crispy noodles, lotus root stir fry with pig neck meat -Needs help- goose feet, fish maw, sea cucumber braised in abalone sauce. The sauce is amazing, but the ingredients did not soak in the sauce long enough to carry the flavor in. The sea cucumber was pretty flavorless and still pale white on the inside. The goose feet also a bit light on the flavor and pale looking. Portions were reasonably sized and we had a lot to take home. The wait staff were extra tentative. read more

I honestly don't know how this place only has 3.5 stars--because for us, it's a go-to spot for delicious, classic dim sum, and the fact that it gives Rakuten points on top? That's just icing on the dumpling. It's located upstairs with a pretty spacious layout, and while it's not super flashy, it does the job with room to spare. My wife usually handles all the ordering (in Cantonese, shoutout to her!), so I can't name every item we devoured--but trust me, we got down. My one gripe is more of a nostalgic one: I miss the old-school dim sum carts rolling around the dining floor, letting you pick what looks good right on the spot. Now, like most places post-COVID, it's a menu-and-order system. It's efficient, but just doesn't hit the same vibe-wise. That said, dim sum is dim sum, and here--it's legit. All the favorites are here, everything comes out hot and fast, and the staff is always on top of service: clearing plates, topping off water, and making sure the table stays clean. I highly recommend their Roast Pork belly plate, with crispy crust and fatty pork. They also feature of multi color 198. Six Guys XLB, which is a distinct flavor variation for each of the colors. Their standard items are all top tier: har gow, siu mai, lotus rice, pork ribs with black beans. One delicious, inexpensive items is their soy sauce noodles for under $10. Haven't been back to this Koi Palace for years and it was surprisingly good. The atmosphere is nice and peaceful, with tables spaced out at a comfortable distance. Service was very attentive and friendly. There were five of us and we ordered a wide variety of dim sum: shrimp dumplings, pan fried daikon cake with XO sauce, crispy fried tofu skin wrap with shrimp, steamed pork and veggie in tofu skin wrap and oyster sauce, chicken claws in black bean sauce, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, ginkgo nuts and pea vines with tofu skin in premium broth, sticky rice in lotus leaves, crispy fried taro puffs, freshly roasted BBQ pork royale, stewed beef gizzards, etc. Everything tasted good and authentic. The standout was the BBQ pork, really tender, juicy, and tasty. Prices are on the high side, but at least quality was good. I spent over $175 on lunch for three people, and it was deeply disappointing. The oxtail in kabocha ($42) was half the size it used to be -- nowhere near enough for three people. I've ordered it at least five times since my first visit, and each time the portion has gotten smaller. The roast piglet ($32) was even more shocking: just six thin slices, each roughly ¼" × 1". I'm not exaggerating -- they were that small. I didn't have my phone on me, so I couldn't photograph it, but when I asked the waiter about the portion sizes, he was unhelpful and dismissive -- hardly worth the automatic 18% gratuity added to the bill. I don't mind paying for quality food, but shrinking portions and poor service are unacceptable, especially at these prices. I had planned to bring my group back next week, but I'll be recommending we dine elsewhere. read more

I more so order from the budget friendly Koi Palace Express; which is also why this is a 3-star rating. Koi Palace is on the pricier side for what it is (ie: good quality, average taste, mixed feelings on portion size). They always package well tho and have cool containers that can vent the food that needs to stay crispy, and they're really good about remembering all the sauces and dips. Today I placed a takeout order through the Koi Palace website for six dim sum items. After I got home, I realized the BBQ pork bun was missing from the order. I called the restaurant to request either a refund or an adjustment, but they refused because the online ordering system is outsourced to DoorDash. They told me I would need to contact DoorDash myself to resolve the issue. I found this very frustrating and irresponsible. The mistake was made by the restaurant, yet they did not take ownership of the problem or offer a direct solution. At the end of the call, they said they would write down my phone number and give me the missing BBQ bun the next time I order, and asked me to place the order directly with the restaurant. Honestly, I am not confident they will remember this the next time I order, whether that is in two months or six months. I am leaving this review as a record in case I need to follow up in the future. read more

This review is mostly towards manager Mr. Sean Lin. We were originally going to host a party here and gave a large deposit, but with last minute circumstances we had to cancel the party. Instead of keeping the deposit and not letting us use it for credit, Sean let us use the credit towards a dinner. We decided to invite 20 of family and friends for dinner, they all said the food was delicious and service was great.
