Has the look of a hipster dive bar when you walk in, but we were desperately hungry and had no decision making capacity so we stopped. Oh my goodness, what a delightful surprise this place is. The bartender/server was so excited to bring us dealer's choice food and drink pairings, and it was SO GOOD. The shrimp and grits was amazing, and the mushroom pappardelle was garlicky and the pasta was perfect, the staff was genuinely excited to feed us and pair wine. Such an unexpected fancy dining experience in an approachable setting at such reasonable prices. We would absolutely come back. Wholeheartedly recommend. read more

I've walked by Solo for years and never ventured inside....Something about their artistic and creative reputation made me feel there might be someone checking my credentials at the door ("Have you written a poem lately? Do any live performance? Can you reinterpret Medea as an interactive five-minute modern dance piece?"). Yet while there were artistic types discussing their latest installations, and another group just back from a lengthy vacation loudly comparing the merits of various Caribbean islands as destinations, I ended up not caring because of how phenomenal Solo's $4 happy hour sangria turned out to be. Sangria is my go-to red velvet cake and pork belly of mixed drinks: almost everywhere offers it, almost nowhere does it beautifully. The quote about pizza and sex applies ("when it's bad, it's still pretty good")...but you still want it good. When sangria is done exquisitely, it's a gorgeously lush and refreshingly chilly sip-ful of full-bodied and bold red wine, a hint of viscosity from the brandy, and lovely high notes of fruit acidity and just-sweet sugars. When it's good, it's really good. Solo's worth a visit for the food too: we sampled the braised chicken tacos and the steak tacos, plus an order of patatas bravas for extra fortification. My steak tacos were lovely: they had the fresh, unadulterated taste of street tacos with slightly more upscale additions like a smoky pimenton-like aioli and crumbly cotija. At $8 for two soft tacos, they do fall into the Mexpensive category, but oh-how-tasty, and with a generous serving of juicy, spicy steak (Painted Hills, since Solo emphasizes local sourcing when they can). The patatas bravas could have been a bit crispier and better cooked, but the twin aiolis (plain and harissa) that topped their flanks were superb. As others have noted, there's also a nice mix of seating (high tables and stools, couches and chairs, regular-height tables good for larger groups by the windows), and it's a bright, airy space with extremely friendly and professional folks working the bar inside. Delish and what a great happy hour! I came with some friends that seemed a bit put off by the juxtaposition of what seemed like a casual neighborhood bar but featured a 'gastropub' menu but I was happy as can be. I ordered the charcuterie plate and the duck fat roasted potato wedges and both were outstanding. I'd order both again in a heartbeat, they were a perfect twist on 'meat and potatoes' both filling and well made, I was feeling like I'd been out to dinner intsead of just had a snack. I had a drink not on special- I like my drinks as I want them and rarely choose the happy hour options- and it was priced for the gastropub, not the neighborhood bar but it was really delicious. I looked it up- it's been a while since I was in- and Happy Hour no longer seems to include food specials: sadness. I'd still go back, but I'll pout. read more

Around the time Solo opened I met this boy who I was on the fence about dating because I was also 'hanging out' with someone else at the time. What would have been our 'third' date he suggested meeting at Solo for drinks, than he added it's just three blocks from his place. Being the prudish analytical betch that I am I decided to pass on meeting him for drinks, I knew what his plan was he was hoping for it on our second date and unfortunately I respect myself too much to get drunk and screw on the third date... Anyways after that experience I never had the desire to go check it out until a few weeks ago. I was in the area with time to kill before seeing a show at the Rep. And than I thought maybe I was completely wrong about the guy because this bar appears to be a bar where the gay men go to pretend they are straight it was so odd and crazy and the more sangria I drank the funnier everything got. (I was with one of my GBFs and they confirmed this analysis of the situation with me.) But when you look at the decor you kind of get a gay trying to be straight vibe, they have funky lamps and a disco ball and some cool couches along with some stiff uptight high tables and chair. Oh and the one thing I noticed is they have happy hour all night Sunday and Monday so if you need happy hour Sunday or Monday night while in Queen Anne Solo is your place. read more

I have come to the realization that I am generally easily pleased when it comes to a bar. There seems to me a base formula when it comes to a place that will ensure if I like the joint or not, and it pleasantly never falls into a particular niche sort of market. For example, I love both Canon and the 5 Point and anyone with half a brain and eyeballs can tell they both are markedly different. Solo ~works~ for me. I really truly like them a lot, so let's look at that formula and see why this place makes me happy. Atmosphere: Im basing this off a quiet Monday evening, but from what I hear it is generally low key in here. Not bustling, dim lights, tons of awesome local art on the walls... I dug it immediately. Anywhere that makes me want to break out my paints gets another point or two for inspiring some creativity. There is a plethora of seating options, including squishy & comfy couches and chairs, stools, tables, etc. There is a fire place for getting cozy, ottomans to throw your feet upon, and the music levels are just right. Loud enough to recognize a song you like (which I heard plenty) but not loud enough to be a nuisance or drone out your conversation. Service: Our waitress was friendly and checked on us as often as needed. She could see our little group had a pretty heavy dialogue going on and checked up on us when she could see our drinks were low. Not obtrusive, no snooty attitude, helpful suggestions, and just an all around nice girl. I liked her too. Drinks: My migraine prone head cannot handle more than 2 of these, but their Sangria is absolutely lovely. They have the balance between wine, brandy, and fruit down just right in a large ice filled wine glass. Super delicious! I sipped on a sparkling wine cocktail that I will have to try next time for the edible flower included, and the tap list -- while small is good. Oskar Blues was on tap which is something I don't see all too often out here and I was happy to order a pint of Dale's Pale in a frosty pint glass here. Pricing: Cheap. Really -- super cheap, especially on a Sunday or Monday where you have all day happy hour prices. 3 drink totaled a measly $12 here. Even if you are not here during HH, the prices on drinks are really quite good. Company: Well, last night it was perfect. I admit I may partially like this place so much just because who I was with enjoys it as well -- but combine everything I have already mentioned with good friends and it is practically impossible for me not to have a a wonderful time here. read more

I have been to Solo a few times and I always received great table and bar service. This place is a tapas bar with a light dinner menu that is definitely for someone with acquired taste, such as the seared ahi tuna with ox-tail ragu. I decided to opt out of that and went with the house soup and salad. Soup was butternut squash, which was good, but extremely rich. Salad is tossed in a tasty light vinaigrette with walnuts and cheese. They do have this basil cheesecake with a light graham cracker crust that I find totally amusing and quite good. Who would have thought basil and cheesecake would vibe well together? I love that crazy little cheesecake, but my friend is not a fan. read more

Last week I was chatting with a coworker about how much I enjoy David Lynch and I developed the intense craving to watch Mulholland Drive after I got home that night. BUT then I ended going out for a drink with a friend after work instead. We wanted to go somewhere that wasn't too crowded and didn't have a dance floor (annoying! I hate dance floors, there I said it!) and she suggested Solo... I'd never been there... We walk in, and what is playing on the projector at Solo? Mulholland Drive. That's it! That's all it takes to earn my love! But I will also mention that the bottle of vihno verde we shared was delicious and reasonably priced, I enjoyed the atmosphere, the crowd was hip and good for people watching, the music fit the scene, there were all sorts of interesting seating options... and yes, NO dance floor! read more

I actually really liked this place! Headed here before the Pearl Jam concert and was delighted that it wasn't full of frat boys from Carly's sorority past. :) I had two sangrias, and they were a whopping 4 bucks each! :) The service was great and all the food coming out looked tasty. The tables are nicely spaced apart, and there are even couches to sit down at. I'll be back before heading to an event at the Seattle Center. Those sangrias and me were fast friends. :) read more

Solo is a great place to have a drink before or after seeing a show at one of the many theaters at Seattle Center. In fact, you're fairly likely to run into some of the performers after their shows are over... it's definitely a hang out for working artist and theater types. Solo has a nice menu with a variety of small plates and cocktails. Look for special drinks on the menu named for some well known Seattle actors; O'Connor, Hyland, Leggett and Dooly to name a few. The bartenders have great taste in music and always seem happy to accommodate requests for large groups and special events. The room is small, but it feels open and airy, and has lots of different seating options; tables, stools, couches, etc. I've been going here for years, and can't believe that they only have four reviews! I guess it's still Lower Queen Anne's best kept secret. read more

After spending 15 hours travelling to Seattle due to various flight delays, all I wanted was a nice stiff drink after checking into my hotel. I headed to Solo because it was right next door. There was a crowd outside smoking and kind of packed inside, so I was a little intimidated. It definitely gave off the neighborhood, everyone here knows each other, hipster kind of bar vibe, so I left! But then, after walking around and finding everything else too loud and busy for my tastes (I just wanted a nice, quiet drink), I came back into Solo and it was the best decision I ever made. I found a seat at the bar and perused their drink menu, which had a lot of fun, eclectic drinks. I ordered a Diablo - and then another, and another, and wound up making friends and taking shots and staying until the lights came on. I loved it so much I came back again on Saturday night and once again stayed til close, chatting and drinking. (Michael, the bartender, makes an amazing French 75, so clearly I had to have 4 of them.) The vibe is just so fun and laid back. They play great music. They have movies and art and drink specials. It's just so nice to be able to come to a place and not have to deal with bullshit or bros or pushy people or snobbery or $14 drinks. This place literally made me want to pack up and move to Seattle right then and there. I've never felt more welcomed by a bar before. NB: They also serve dinner which I didn't get to try because I came in late but I hear their chef, Joe, will make you a meal guaranteed to curl your toes and give you a gastronomic orgasm. read more

Solo Bar is also said to be an art gallery and with two Yelp entries for the place I thought the art and the bar garnered individual reputations. But it is about" all in one" as you can get. The place is really a bar more than anything with art up for sale along the columns and walls. I thought the amount of art and the presentation of it was more like how some restaurants sell art on their walls and it just didn't seem gallery like at all. In fact no one else there was looking at art at all, just drinking. I looked for a short time but there was so little there I sat down relatively fast. The atmosphere here wants to be promising but the furniture, dark curtains, white walls, red lamps and so on makes the place an unintentional mismatch, further diminishing the sophistication most art galleries have. The combination of bar and gallery here just doesn't work...but it could. Ok, enough of my interior decorating and presentation critique. I do have to say on the positive side the seating is relaxing and you can get a pretty decent assortment of beers, mixed drinks and snacks. The prices here are more reasonable than at the bars up on Capitol Hill but I don't know how good the mixed drinks actually are. I got a pear beer here which was good and also reasonable. The bartender also was very sweet. Out of all honesty I am not sure if I will swing back in here or not. The" gallery" concept was a big let down for me and the rest was just so so. Before seeing Willy Wonka at SIFF, The Wife and I met up with The Kids for a little libation and food at Solo. Although they had no Everlasting Gobstoppers, they did have some great plates for those of us with no golden ticket. All of the dishes we had were very successful. Kid #2 raved about the Mac & Cheese. Kid #1 loves their Pot Roast with a puree of parsnips. Kid #3 devoured a large plate of Tagliatelle tossed with Braised Short Rib. The Wife had a spicy PB&J made with house ground peanut butter served with an amazing Potato Salad Verde that tasted like Thanksgiving dressing. Me? Two glorious Pork Belly Sliders served Banh Mi style on sweet rolls. It was rich, spicy and amazingly delish!! These guys also have an incredible happy hour with $4 cocktails and HH is all day Sunday and Monday! Oh yeah. read more

From the outside, it looks like this place is just called "BAR" because that's what the banner says. You have to be super up close to realize it's real name- Solo. My BF and I came here after an uneventful night at McMennamins, just sort of stumbled across it on our journey home. We walked in and I automatically felt this weird energy... literally, it has a very uncomfortable vibe to it. Like you're not supposed to be there. It's all very white and clean and hospital-y, but like a hospital trying to be trendy and cool with art and drinks and a bar. So anyway, we sit down, and this dude comes and asks us what we want (no checking the ID which kind of angers me because that means if I had tried, I could have gotten into bars when I was under 21) so we ordered. Drinks came, we sat and looked at the cool art books and observed other awkward looking people around- especially the two people in front of us that looked like they were on a first date. WONDERFUL situation for people watching. When we were done with our second drink, we were ready to pay and peace the hell outta there. Only, Mr. Waiter dude stopped coming around to us. Puzzled, I went to the bar to pick up my check, and Mr. Waiter dude was leisurely enjoying a salad of some sort while chatting with the bartender. Even when I came up to the bar to get my check, they didn't come to me. I was literally like 3 feet away from both of them, I could have stuck my face in theirs, but I decided to be patient. I have walked past Solo on many occaisions when the place is downright packed. Typically on nights where there are concerts/events/etc in the Lower Queen Anne area. I'm not a big fan of the event crowds, so I have avoided the place until recently. Stopped in the other night ont eh way home with a small group and the place was literally empty. We figured...why not? We had a good time. The couches were super comfotable and there were several good spots to put your feet up. The bartender was a personalbe guy, had a great conversation on the music he was playing. The pours were generous and the mixed drinks spot on. Prices, a bit high, but it makes sense considering their main crowd doesn't appear to be people who live up the block. I'll stop in more often and check out the menu. Worth a look. read more

I met up with a group of friends here to have a quick drink and bite before heading over to a SIFF film. The space was comfy and welcoming, and artsy in fun way (I really loved the tile on the bathroom floor). It felt a bit like hanging out in someone's basement they had converted into a lounge. The food was all very intriguing, but the waitress was unable to answer any of my questions...there were a number of things I had no clue about. Caul? You can eat that? Trophie? Malawi? I am curious, but more information would have been most appreciated. I went with a safe choice of Braised Duck Leg with Roasted Root Vegetable Hash. Tricky to eat gracefully, but tasty. Next time I want to try the roasted bone marrow. And maybe some of that other cryptic stuff. read more

All the happy hour drinks are YUM! The meat/bread/onions/eggs/nuts/spreads/olives platter, sliders, mac/cheese are great, too. Be forewarned, it is way too fun and easy to drop $35 if you go wild and order 3 cocktails and various foods (hey, I was there during the presidential debates, to my defense). The portion sizes are on the small-size, though, and I recommend not coming here if you are starving. Worth it definitely for the HH drinks, and the food isn't so expensive if you share. The $13 platter, for instance, is great when paired with the drinks and we shared between the 3 of us. read more

Needed to find a bar to go to before a show at the key arena. The first two we peeked in where overcrowded and standing room only. Solo had enough people in it, but still a few places to sit. We were able to snag a seat at the bar where we received excellent service. Shots were served in larger glasses than tends to be typical. Beer selection on tap was small, but there was an interesting selection of cans and bottles. I enjoyed the art on the walls and the couch areas looked pretty comfy. Perused the menu, but didn't try any food although it did look appetizing and I appreciate the labeling of the vegetarian options and the posting of the menu on the outside window. My only complaint is that one bathroom for a bar is not the greatest. read more

A few friends and I met up at Solo after a movie this past weekend, and frankly, I was disappointed by our bar experience. We were a group of six, and rather than allowing us to snag a couple seats from one of the numerous empty tables, the host insisted on setting up two of our members with wooden folding chairs. We really aren't that picky about our seating, but it was an odd welcome to the establishment. My beverage of choice was the "Seasonal Lemonade" ($6) that supposedly was plum-flavored, but just tasted like plain ol' lemonade to me. Perhaps some of the other flavors pack more of a flavor punch. My friend tried to order the Fat Tire ale that was listed on the chalkboard above the bar, but was told Solo is "phasing it out". We were checked on once following our initial drink order, and that was it. Perhaps we would have ordered more, but the lull in service translated to a decrease in our momentum, and we cashed out after one round. Stopped here when in town and staying at the Maxwell Hotel. We kept walking past and thinking, "Wow, that place is packed" so we finally put on our game faces and went inside. I was pleased to see that the interior was tastefully decorated and the art on display is also for sale, so it was almost like a private art show, if you wanted to peruse all the artist's work. It was a laid back atmosphere, but most of all I liked the craft cocktail selection. We've been to a few "speakeasy" type bars where we are from, and enjoy creative mixing and twists on the old standard Manhattan, for example. At solo, the Manhattan to Prague was probably my favorite drink. Just changed a few things and gave it a whole new taste. We came back every night thereafter, and had some of our Seattle-ite friends meet up with us there too. It was good times. read more

I'd read another review which said that the cocktails were $4 during all day happy hour on Sunday and Monday, so I came by on a Monday to check it out for the first time. Cocktails were actually $2 off, so they were $6 instead of $8. I'm okay with that. The bartender was cool and my drink was tasty enough (dark rum & ginger beer). Well drinks are $4 during happy hour. We didn't try the food. I liked the atmosphere. There are lots of long couches arranged next to each other so that a group of 6-8 can sit together and still hear each other talk. Local art on the walls. It was neither crowded nor empty and felt neighborhood-y. Order at the bar - there's no sign indicating that. read more

Music was weirdly loud for the relative emptyness the night I was there. But the bartender was dancing and sweating up a storm! Yeehawwwwwwwww-- no. They're pretty zany on food choices; definitely NOT your average bar food. And the location is sweet if you don't live on Queen Anne and you have an event at Key or something. I'm having a hard time deciding how many stars to give Solo. When I first walked in, I immediately was reminded of my grandma's basement, and I'm not sure that's a good thing. It's almost charming. I think if my drink had been better, I would have said it was charming. But the drink... Oh god the drink. Hands down the worst cocktail I have ever had in my 37 years of existence. I couldn't even finish it, which is pretty bad as I am known amongst my friends as the person that will eat or drink anything gross. About three sips and I just decided to count it as a sunk cost and that I'd enjoy my life more if I didn't drink it. For your reference it was the Pear Collins, and if you want a drink that tastes like cough syrup I do recommend it. Now that said, the service was quite good if a little slow. And I was surprised at how tasty my ham & Gruyere sandwich was, though my friend got the Käse spätzle (she grew up in Germany so maybe a hard sell?) and was disappointed both with the dish and the portion size. I think for happy hour this place might be worth it, but I literally could not stomach paying $8 for the drink I couldn't drink again. For $8 I can go to Percy's and get a truly delightful beverage made with decent liquor and fresh herbs. I might go back to Solo and give it another shot, but I won't be hurrying to do so. read more

This is my favorite local bar in Queen Anne. I love the cushy couches where you can gather with a small group of friends. I love the intimacy of the place and also the ever changing artwork keeps it simple. The place is never loud and obnoxious. The service is generally good too. They don't mind if you bring in outside food if their kitchen is closed. read more

I love Solo, and I'm not just being biased because I know the owner and manager... it's a great place to mingle with friends and have a good drink. Val is always friendly and entertaining to talk to, and Michael I've known for years and is equally as nice and accommodating. It's definitely better here on a weekday, or when there isn't a show at the Key Arena, a lot better when it's just the regulars, and we can actually get the couch. It was even better when one of my best friends lived right above it in the same building and we didn't have to drive anywhere after having one too many of Michael's or Val's delicious concoctions! read more

I'm down in Lower Queen Anne all the time going to shows at the Center, and Solo is my number one (almost exclusive) stop. The food is great for the price, and it's definitely got more culinary flair than you usually expect from bar food. The drinks are reasonably priced, with a good happy hour (all day on Sundays, I think). And as for the staff, they're wonderful. Everyone who works there is really cool and nice, and contributes to the chill atmosphere. Table service isn't always guaranteed, but reading a lot of these reviews, I have to ask: have you people never been to a bar before? You can just walk up and order. read more

AWK-ward... It's one of those moments when you walk into a place, pause, scan, and walk back out backwards. In my case I wish I could have walked out but I couldn't. I was invited to hang out with my cousins and one of my cousin's friends. This bar is for hipsters. The ambiance and people remind me of a CSI Miami episode. It's not a big place. Artwork covered the blue walls. The DJ was playing some techno mix with some type of South American instrument and a movie was displayed on a projection screen. Definitely not my type of bar. I am like the typical Pemco NW profile. My type of bars: Fado, Pike Brewing Company, Noc Noc...I'll even throw in Ozzie's since it's in Queen Anne. read more

WOW!! On vaca, staying at the Maxwell, I am so glad we stumbled in here. The food was awesome! We stuffed ourselves with goat cheese dates, the RANDIZZLER BOARD, and brussel sprout salad. Literal PERFECTION. My chicken tacos left a little to be desired, but I'm from Texas and we are born with the ability to concoct perfect tacos, so I forgave this. Our server was also the bartender, and she was very attentive and super friendly. My only complaint about the ambiance was that some of their obvious regulars were kinda drunk and cursing loudly at the bar. It really didn't take too much away from our dinner though. After my first visit, Solo is what I would politely call a "nice place." That is to say that it's clean, they served me drinks, and nothing went terribly awry. It was a Monday night and there were about a dozen people in the bar. It was quiet, good for conversation, while music played quietly in the background. The decor was modern and cute, and you could tell they wanted the room to be open and inviting. I imagine that they don't get especially packed in there as the arrangement of the furniture - couch and coffee table seating at one end, tall dining tables at the back, short dining tables at the front, and a standard bar at the other end - wouldn't suit a big crowd. But it was nice all the same. The server was initially attentive, but after 2 stops at our table, I had to walk to the bar to order the rest of the drinks. It probably had something to do with the fact that she was the only one working, but I'd prefer one or the other - I only went to the bar when it seemed clear that the server wasn't coming back to the table. It was happy hour and the prices were good: $2 off cocktails, $1 off wells. We tried a couple of specialty cocktails and they were both very good. It was late, so we didn't try the food. Around 9:30 they dimmed the lights and started playing Super Troopers on a screen at the front of the bar. It was a little strange since it was completely unexpected and a bit louder than the music had been, but the group at the bar were loving it and it didn't distract us too much from our conversation. Maybe playing movies is a regular thing and I was just unaware? I imagine I'll probably come back at some point. Maybe I'll be able to bump up the rating when there are more servers to go around. But for now it gets 3 stars for being a "nice place." read more
