Solo is one of my favorite bars in Seattle. It has an artsy vibe without being overly hipster, amazing sangria (made with brandy! Yowza!), great use of the space. The food is fantastic, I recommend the hummus plate and the gazpacho whole-heartedly. All in all, a very cool place to chill out and listen to some good tunes on Friday night when they usually have a cool DJ spinning. Rock on, Solo. UPDATE 7/27/08: My co-worker who DJs there regularly told me that Solo isn't doing the DJ nights anymore because of noise complaints. Wtf, lower QA? It's a bar, you prudes. I swear, Michael make THE BEST French '75 I have ever had....Val, well he makes the best Caphirinia. Nice, warm staff. Very casual. Val's wife comes down often, and she's just lovely and adds to the family, warm-fuzzy feel. Michael is just a generally nice guy. Interesting visuals (-the sound, no not a TV) in front of the couch. The food is hit or miss, usually hit though for me. Good tunes, usually Brit-pop/rock...sometimes a DJ. read more

Wanting to try somewhere new (but in the neighborhood) for an informal birthday celebration, we decided to give Solo a try. All night happy hour on Sunday and Monday with several cocktails for $4 and other drink specials as well. Some people in our group ordered food, which looked great and seemed to be decently priced. We really liked the varied seating areas available all around the restaurant/bar -- and the amount of open space too, would be great for an event where people wanted to have room to walk around and mingle. We definitely plan to visit Solo again! One small warning for those of you that may have allergies: this is apparently a dog-friendly place (at least for certain four-footed friends). read more

I went to solo for an event on a monday evening. Something about the layout of the place was very wrong, and I can't place my finger on it. Perhaps it was the unfortunate placement of a structural column that kind of blocked the view of the bar when you walk in the door, or the placement of the stage next to the door, or the high tables or something. I don't know. But it just seemed odd to me. Service was GREAT. The bartenders were fast and friendly. One bathroom made for an uncomfortable, foot shuffling wait in line, but on the other hand gave me an excuse to talk to the girl from Louisiana about saying "ya'll" and Boudin sausage. Mmmm. Stopped in last night to grab food and drinks before a performance at the Intiman. The place was pretty packed. All of the bigger low tables were filled and the high tables were taken, except one, which we grabbed. I love being loungey on couches and stuff, but not when I am going to be eating. It was quite busy for a Wednesday night and I guessed correctly...people were in there grabbing drinks and nibbles before the show at the Intiman (as I saw many of the same people once we arrived at the theater). The bartender was slammed since she was also providing table service which was a bit of a let down when trying to order a second round of drinks. JP ordered a Dale's Pale Ale and I had a glass of rose. For food JP ordered the soup (which was a Tuscan vegetable) and chicken tacos. I went with the tarragon chicken salad (was later told by the chef it was his grandmother's recipe). The chicken salad itself was tasty but it could be a standout with better bread. Overall I thought the food was great and our experience was good. I would give this place one more star if the service hadn't been so slow, but I know she was doing what she could! read more

Finally made it to Solo after having dinner at McMennamins on a blustery Saturday evening (12/22). The decor inside is fairly stylish. It was a fiarly dead night everywhere (holidays?). Bro ordered a whiskey and coke & I ordered a caiparinha. Drinks were decent. Decided to order a couple of tapas: Pinchito Moruno (pork on a stick) & Masa Fritos (looked like small pancakes). they were decent. The movie projected on the wall for the evening was one of the Grindhouse movies (the gory one). Decent place to kill time. read more

I am visiting from San Francisco and Solo happened to be close to my hotel so I decided to try it out. I am sooooo glad I did! Firstly the ambiance is perfect... great lighting, super casual, and the best part of it all was the music selection! Music from the 90's (Elliot Smith) I haven't listened to in forever. The food was top notch. I ordered an amazing salad, stuffed dates and the lamb meatballs and everything was perfect! The next time I come back to Seattle I will return! I think this place is definitely underrated by most, one of the chillest spots in all of lower queen anne. Its literally like having a drink in someones living room/basement (in a good way). There are plenty of comfy couches to sit on and cool to art look at (and even buy if you are in the market). We come to Solo quite a bit for happy hour, since I work a few blocks away. It's so chill and nice. You don't have to worry about a huge crowd and it doesn't feel like a meat market. It's just relaxing and the drinks are fabulous! Seriously, they make a mean amaretto ginger ale and apparently my friend loves the martini there. Although, make sure you specify what martini...as we had a bit of a mix up on whether it was a happy hour "solo martini" or not. My only complaint about this place? 1 bathroom and there's no more salumi plate. read more

I love Solo bar! I love that it's usually pretty chill (especially compared to the craziness that is lower QA on the weekend)... and that it's really never too crowded. It's pretty overpriced, in my opinion... but I suppose most of the bars around there are. The food is pricy and portions are small - so I wouldn't recommend eating here if you're on a budget or have an appetite... but for what it was, it was tasty. It's cool to see the performers from Teatro Zinzanni come in after the show... and as others have mentioned, it's very convenient if you've been to or are going to a show yourself in the area. Overall, I just really love the vibe in here - it's light inside so you can actually see the face of the people you're drinking with - and relaxed. Definitely not a place I'd hang out for more than a few drinks (unless I came in solo and wanted to sip on wine and read a book) but it's a great place to stop in for a bit. read more

Outstanding place to get a drink and a bite to eat in LQA. Service is always spot on and since they switched chefs and menu's a while back the food has become a strong suit as well. Oh, Solo, let me count the ways I love thee... Where to start? The food is superb, simple fare. I regret that it took over a year of coming here to order anything beyond drinks. I've never had a dish here that I didn't absolutely love, but the ones I come back to time after time are the pork belly sliders, the Mac and cheese and the grilled caprese sandwich. Soups change frequently and are stellar every time. The portions are just right and, with most under $10, doable on any budget. The cocktails are absurdly affordable for Queen Anne (especially during happy hour), and the beer selection is good. I adore the all day happy hour on Sunday. Solo is a must try regardless of where you're currently at in Seattle Finally, this review wouldn't be complete without mentioning Elizabeth, the hardworking bartender. This is one of my favorite bars. I live within walking distance and was tired of the frat-boy-filled bars (Ozzie's, I'm talking about you!). My boyfriend and I come here a lot when we're feeling low key and just want to get a beverage after work. The prices are REALLY good (something around $3-$4 for a gin and tonic, and they DO NOT skimp on the gin). They have a small menu of food but everything I have tried has been mouth-wateringly-delicious. Sometimes standing outside, smoking, we have run into the employees and they have all been super nice and friendly. We ran into one of the cooks once and talked about the meal he was preparing for us. Val, the owner, is a great guy and always down to chat. I love it here and try to come as often as possible. The vibe is very mellow and the people seem really nice. No douche-bags in sight (hooray!). I love how they have the seating set up. Some tables, a bar (obviously), and scattered couches and leather chairs. Damn.. now that I'm writing this I'm craving to go there after work tonight. read more

Service and drinks were fine - the last time I had been there, a projector showed a movie on the wall in the background which added a nice ambiance - there was art on the projector wall and not much of an ambiance. Solo offered the perfect sea of calm when we needed a mid-afternoon break from Bumbershoot before going back for the evening shows. We sank into the comfy couch for some R&R. Ah, peaceful! The bartender is hip without ever being unfriendly, and she makes an excellent cocktail or two. We enjoyed the Manhattan Meets Prague (strong! but the first Manhattan I've really liked) and the Emperor (one of several rye whiskey cocktails on the menu, very cool). Needed a nightcap after the meat and cheese festival at McCaw Hall and wanted somewhere with a loungy feel to it, not too loud, but not dead either and this fit the bill. I'm totally blown away by the treatment we received today. After a friend's recommendation, we stopped in at about 6:00PM after a SIFF film. No tables were occupied. A young guy was cleaning up two tables. We asked him if there was a food menu and he plopped a couple on a table and walked off. He was mixing drinks at a fairly quiet bar and NEVER returned to our table for drink or food orders. We left after about 10-15 minutes and I'm sorry we waited so long to leave. The menu looked good and we had decided to have some dinner and beer and sangria. I don't know why we were so rudely treated but suspect that we did not meet their customer age criteria (We're 68 and 72). It was absolutely not busy; we were the only guests seated at a table and since the guy gave us menus, it was definitely dinner time. Will never try that place again. read more

The rotating local art is always fun to see and the bartenders are fabulous! The food is amazing and the menu changes seasonally, so there is always an excuse to go back. They have monthly live performance art and have the occasional pop up dinner. The pop up dinners are lovely on every level, with beautiful atmosphere and delicious food and cocktail pairings. I felt like I had moved back to my parents' basement." That's maybe what makes it so charming. Cons: Two-seater tables were too small to fit our apps (1 each) and main dishes (1 each). Floor was kind of dirty. [Read: No real cons] The cocktails seemed to be about average quality, but I was pleasantly surprised at how eclectic some of the food options were, esp the appetizer-sized bar snacks, which I think stole the show. Bacon wrapped cornichons hit the spot. Goat cheese dates had a great texture. For a main course, I ordered the flavorful well-seasoned Harissa chicken wings with mint yogurt, and boyfriend got short rib chili, of which he says, "Not only did I feel like I moved into my parents' basement, but I also felt like they had cooked for me." read more

This place is a great little accidental gem! It's obviously a "neighborhood " gathering place, that on Opera night, with several other nearbys closed for good, stepped up and said "come on in!" The menu and drink list are familiar with a twist. But definitely not your typical bar food fare! Service was friendly and as fast as possible given the sudden volume of visitors! I recommend the Brie plate, and the shrimp & grits was truly flavor smacking good. The DH had a pork belly Ruben was sinfully delicious as well. Truly looking forward to coming back when in the city just to hang out and explore the mule options (fair to midlands seems right in my wheel house) and the Black Mirror was a Hit with the DH! read more
