We ordered Bombay Sapphire martinis with olives, but the bar made them dirty martinis, so we had to send them back and so we waited a long time to ever get our first drink. The burrata starter was okay, but probably not something I'd order again. That said, the ahi dinner was fantastic and definitely the highlight of the meal. Stopped by Alder & Ash and had a mixed experience overall. I ordered the Impossible Burger (basically their regular burger but with an Impossible patty). Unfortunately, the patty came out way too charred, to the point where the burnt flavor really overpowered everything else. It was a bit disappointing, especially since that was the main thing I was looking forward to. One thing they did well was the service speed. The food and drinks came out pretty quickly, which I appreciated. The drinks themselves were also quite good and probably the highlight of the visit. That said, the place is definitely on the expensive side, which makes the overcooked burger a bit harder to overlook. For the price point, I was hoping for something a little more polished. I want to give 5 stars to the staff -- they were wonderful. The place itself is very nice, almost like an elegant fast-food restaurant. Unfortunately, the food just didn't meet my expectations. The burger meat didn't taste like good quality, and I could only eat about a quarter of it. Interestingly, the waiter took the plate without asking if I wanted it to go, almost as if she knew it wasn't great. The salad was also a bit overwhelming with the amount of dressing. Had cocktails in the bar prior to dinner (Alder Wood), and while they were very expensive at $20 each, they were actually quite tasty. The dinner though was way overpriced for what it was. There were very few dishes to choose from (5 or so) so I went with the burger. It was astronomically expensive at $26 and I was asked if I wanted guacamole and bacon also; I said yes, not knowing it was $6 extra to have anything on the bare burger. The burger came and I'm not sure there even was any guacamole or bacon on it, and it was small and nothing special at all. It may be the worst meal I've ever paid $32 for. The space was lively but not overly loud and the interior is well maintained and very clean. The mint julep was fantastic with mint Bourbon and left a great minty aftertaste. The Apple a Day was perfectly balanced with notes of Apple. The Alder Smoke was a great drink to end on as the bourbon and smoke was a great balance to the end of the meal. For the food, the popcorn cauliflower was the best I've had. It had a crispy light batter and paired well with the basil and chili aioli. The burger was cooked perfectly to a medium with crunchy and flavorful toppings. The burger paired well with a Caesar salad substitute instead of fries as the salad was fresh and lemony with the anchovy vinaigrette. The shrimp linguini was not too heavy and had a nice lemony aftertaste. The perfectly cooked shrimp were great (though would have liked the tails not on them for pasta) and the smoked paprika breadcrumb topping balanced the dish out. Very impressed by this restaurant! We had a reservation for 2:45pm. The host informed us that we were able to quickly order off the lunch menu until 3pm. While we hadn't planned to do this and solely came for happy hour, I'm so glad that we ordered a lunch dish because it was DELICIOUS. We had the Fried Fish Sandwich which came with the herb & sea salt fries. The sandwich was super hearty. The fries were AMAZING and were my favorite type of fries (battered fries). They were salted perfectly, were just the right texture (not too soggy or crispy), and weren't too oily. Overall might be the best fries I've had in a long time! The $10 happy hour cocktails were yummy, specifically the Blush & Bashful and Rosemary Lemon Drop drinks. They weren't too sweet and all the flavors complemented each other well. I was surprised at how big the happy hour food portions were! I recommend getting the baby gem caesar. It was tossed with a light coating of dressing and served with shredded parmesan and a few croutons. This was also probably my favorite caesar salad I've had from a restaurant! One thing I probably wouldn't order again is the grilled chicken thigh happy hour item. The chicken was juicy but bland. The sauce on top added to the flavor, but the underseasoned chicken was hard to ignore. We were sat in the lounge area, which was open and cozy. The rest of the restaurant was very large and had a clean bathroom. The staff was very attentive. :) Definitely recommend coming to Alder & Ash for a great happy hour experience. Came here twice during our conference--once for lunch and again for dinner--mainly because of the convenience (it's connected to the host hotel and steps from the convention center), but also because the food delivered. For lunch, I had the clam chowder--and yes, I think I'm officially a chowder girl now. I finally managed to make that happen, this time with just my wife, and we were seated at a pleasant booth on what I took to be the back wall. I would imagine these booths, surrounded by stone wall, cut out in "U" shape, are more insulated from the clatter of sound generated in the restaurant. Unfortunately, the booth seat was really dirty when we sat down, and both my wife and I had to stand back up and clean off a considerable amount of crumbs and other debris. I ordered the house cheeseburger and my wife ordered a fish entree. Service was generally excellent. I asked for a cortado and it arrived with an apology about the lack of appropriate glassware - it came in a toddy glass. No problem, but the cortado itself was a latte, not a cortado. Located inside the Sheraton Grand, which is very convenient if you were staying there. We ate a late lunch around 1 PM. The restaurant was not that busy. We were seated very promptly. We first became familiar with Alder & Ash during a Yelp event last year, and decided that we needed to visit it again. We've now been twice and will definitely come again. Pros: it's centrally located, has parking just across the street (if you're arriving after 4 on a weekday, it's $7 for the night, which is literally unheard of in Seattle), has a happy hour from 4-6, has nice and comfortable digs and a friendly staff. Cons: it's a bit pricey, and if you're unlucky to be there when a private event is happening (which we were once), seating may be iffy or difficult. Don't give up! The staff will find a way to seat you (even if they seem a little harried about it). Also, the menu changes, so sometimes your favorite dish may disappear for a while before reappearing later in the year. (I'm not completely sure if this is a Con, but if you're particular, it could be.) This last time, we were downtown for another event, and decided to make Alder & Ash our go to before the event. It was a good choice. They got us seated promptly, and with 10 minutes to spare in the Happy Hour. We ordered Watermelon and Halloumi (so yummy!), Zucchili and Dill Fritters, and my girlfriend got the Goofy Footed Margarita (with watermelon; notice a theme?). She thought the margarita was a little spicy and a little sweet and really good! The previous time we were there there was a small group of us. We ordered grilled asparagus and hummus for the table, and the Orecchiette alla Norma pasta, and Avacado Toast. All was wonderful! I feel like I got ripped off because this place has such a high yelp rating yet the food that we tried was overall just fine. About six dishes two out of the six were good, the others passable. I'll start with the positive... I love a huge space. I feel like people could talk if they want to and a seat would be available. The downside to a huge space is because the restaurant was so large, because it was pretty empty. It seemed like a strange vibe, like a deserted amusement park. The two standouts were the crispy rice appetizer, which was very flavorful and had a great texture and I'm surprised to say it, but the burger was great. There was a sauce issue here. On the steak and the scallops there was a little bit of a heavier sauce and a little bit too much of it. Every time we see that I feel like it's covering up something. Our scallop orderer describe the scallops as the worst , good scallops he's had which fits for several categories of the establishment. The steak was also good but the sauce was heavy. My husband orders steaks at diners and at fine dining establishments, and he described the steak as fine, but he couldn't taste well it because of the heavy steak sauce. The burger was also very saucy, but I didn't mind that. I would appreciate it if Yelp had a label to specify if a restaurant is a hotel restaurant because I would've done some extra research had I known. Typically hotel restaurants are not my first choice. Our waiter was odd. A couple questions were asked, and the reaction he had was that the question was strange or hard to answer. I've never had the experience where I would felt judged on the way a question about the menu was phrased. Also service was a bit slow for a near empty place. Food was a three, experience was a one, rounding down to reset the overall rating of this place. We started with a plate of oysters which were so fresh and delicious. For our entrees we split a shrimp scampi and steak frites. I appreciate that they split the scampi into two small plates for us. The steak was tender and juicy. For dessert we had a salted caramel ice cream on a chocolate tart. The tart was hard to cut because it was so cold. But the flavors made up for it. It's actually a good sized bowl of sushi rice with seasoned tuna, avocado, edamame and other veggies. They had some jalapeno pepper in there to give the mixture some heat. I like it.
