I made to feel very uncomfortable last night by the server. I frequently visit this spot because I live in the area and when I do come I usually spend a couple hundred there. Last night I was accused of not paying my tab the last time I was there. I even opened up my credit card app just to show them that I did paid last time. Well.... This place was a major disappointment. Maybe I'm spoiled with the variety of shabu in the 626. Came in around 1:30-2ish the other day. The restaurant was half full, so we got a seat at the bar immediately. I was trying to catch up with my friend and to my surprise, there's a waiter here that loves to eavesdrop and butt in to your conversation uninvitedly! I know waiters eavesdrop (who wouldn't?), but it's extremely rude to just butt into the conversation and as we leave, make a snarky comment about conversing with the server. Moving on to the actual food; I ordered a regular angus ribeye with spicy miso and steamed rice. Our waitress didn't get my rice order right the first time around, she switched it... and still came back with the wrong order. By that time, I was too annoyed with the eavesdropping waiter and how nothing was really going right, so I didn't even bother correcting her again. The portions are pretty small, but the meat was fresh. The veggies on the other hand seemed to be days old. I was scared that I was going to get sick from it. The thing that bummed me out about this place the most was the rice. I don't normally eat much rice, but when I do, I'd like to scoop the rice out. The rice here was ROCK HARD. Literally molded to the shape of the bowl even when it's still hot. Poured some soup in and it was still rock hard. Major disappointment. Sakura is below mediocre. I've been to Sakura Shabu-Shabu in Anaheim and Huntington Beach and since I was in the area I decided to stop by this one. First things first, unless you're used to the downtown area and know the ways of finding parking, it can be difficult even getting there. Going in they offer you high top or low top, which doesnt really matter unless you don't like your legs dangling. The vibe and environment were very modern with a mix of EDM and pop music. The only complaint I have of the set up is how far the pot is from your seat. I had to get up a few times in order to scoop some soup or fish out a veggie. I got the spicy miso with large toro which was 12 pieces. I'm not too good with spice so the soup alone was a good spicy level for me but they do offer spicy drops. The broth was pretty good, however the meat quality compared to Anahiem wasn't as good but definitely better than Huntington's. And they give you extra spinach and cabbage for free which is a bonus! Overall I definitely think Anaheim is my favorite go to for this chain. But if I'm ever in Fullerton I wouldn't mind stopping by to get my Shabu fix here. read more

This is my go-to shabu spot anywhere in Orange County. The flavors of the broth, the quality of the meats, and the proper portions make this place the best, IMO. My go-to is the 8oz pork belly, spicy miso broth, with goma/ponzu dips --- since I love it spicy, throw 11 hot drops in my soup 4&4 in the sauces. I dress my broth with plenty of green onion, 3 scoops of garlic, and 3 scoops of daikon --- plenty of chili oil and ground sesame as well. Make sure to dress your dips as well --- I dress the raw meats with some chili oil and ground sesame for good measure. The service is on point and dining experience great. We ordered using their NEW app so you can order and pay on the app. They just started using it. When I was closing out the check I noticed an overcharge of over $20 and it did not look correct. The guy said that option was for another store so they had to charge us the "normal " way, not using the app to pay. It was labeled as Service charge which I don't understand why that would be even used at another restaurant or location as he said. Wow if we paid through the app we would have been overcharged by almost $22. I wonder if other people catch the overpriced amount. For those of you who plan on going here and use the app to order and pay on the app, it would be wise to scrutinize the receipt before tapping to pay. Since restaurants are going high tech nowadays, it's probably a good idea to always check to see if the charges are legit. If you're planning to eat here, I highly recommend a reservation. We came here on a Saturday night and had to wait 30 minutes for a spot. The waiting area is tiny and you practically hover over the guests that are eating. All seating is at the bar and there are not many seats available. Each seat has its on stovetop. The menu features several beef options, chicken, tofu, and shrimp as the main protein. The proteins are available in 4, 6, 8, and 12 oz servings. I had the chicken and it was served in thin slices to minimize the cooking time. Chicken isn't the best option for shabu because it is a bit tough to monitor the right point between uncooked and over cooked chicken while you're enjoying meals with others. My husband had the Korean short rib and it was fine. The meats are finely sliced, which makes it a bit hard to grade quality. Each protein order is served with your choice of soup base, veggies, white or brown rice, and ramen or udon noodles. The udon noodles were good and not overly thick. This place used to be ok pre-covid, but everything has worsened after social distancing. My date and I visited around 2-3pm on a Sunday and had to wait over 30min for a table even though half the restaurant was open after a bunch of people left, likely because the place is understaffed. Seems like they're trying to save money at the expense of their customers, because the portions are smaller, and meat quality worse, than what it used to be. And they were already way overpriced before. I spent almost $100, and neither me nor my date were full. We ended up going to mcdonald's after lol. I would let everything else slide, but the service was also really bad. I had a negative experience with a waitress who was generally rude and inattentive. I understand that we are all going through relatively hard times, but the staff here lets it show, and it is very unprofessional. Overall the vibe sucked because the workers seem overworked and stressed out, so I definitely would not recommend this spot for a date. By far, the best service I have had at any shabu shabu restaurant! I took my 2 girlfriends here because they have never tried it before. I have been to the Huntington Beach location a bunch of times because it's closer to my house, but since we were in the area, we came here. I did not mind the slow service in the beginning because this was my first Shabu Shabu experience so I took extra time with the menu. I ordered the spicy edamame. Personally, I love this place. I love the sauces, menus options and vibe. Parking can be a pain sometimes but that's not their fault. Usually get the smiley server dude, he's on it! It's pretty straightforward in terms on what they offer all around. Originally the whole concept of cooking for yourself was wild to me but now I know that every time I'll get exactly what I want and how I want it. A hip new shabu place in Downtown Fullerton.. There were not too many parties before us, but the wait was LONG. We waited and waited and waited and finally got seated after I was so hAngry. Wagyu toro ($16.98 for large): it was very fatty. The taste was pretty good and the portion was generous though. I got wakame as my broth (as usual) and the shabu was served with typical ponzu and goma sauce. Ok..actually not typical because the goma sauce was DELICIOUS! Weak ponzu and excellent goma. It is one of the best goma sauces I've ever had and I've had my share of shabu. The shabu came with veggie, tofu, udon and rice. You have the option of either white or brown rice. The napa cabbage was too big. I wish it was sliced smaller, like normal shabu places. We also got the gyoza and it was kinda good. It was the first time I had gyoza at the shabu place. Gyoza is usually served at ramen joints. The gyoza was kinda good though. The tender filing was tasty and the sauce on top was kinda good. The manager and waiters were nice, but service was slow and non attentive. I am used to fast service at shabu restaurants. We had to ask for pretty much everything and we had to ask several times. 3.5 stars!! Pretty good shabu for the price, if you ask me. They offer spicy drops to supplement the broth if needed. 1 drop = spiciness of a habanero. Flavor wise, the broth itself was mediocre. You definitely need to add more stuff (hot drops, garlic, green onions, etc) to add more punch. For the amount of food you get, you're definitely not going overboard with portion sizes. Ponzu sauce is your friend to take this to flavor town! The set up for the electric stove was a bit awkward. Personally, I would've preferred if it was closer toward the middle of where you're seated rather than where the other person's plate would be if you had someone sitting right across from you. Ambiance: At 11:30am on a Saturday, it was deserted to the point that I thought they were still closed since there were no customers present. Music is more hip hop and even club like. This is my second time eating shabu-shabu and I guess it's just not my thing. I typically don't like eating at restaurants where I do the cooking myself (with the exception of Korean BBQs), so I'm not surprised about my reaction. That said, I had an okay time here, with good service, a clean and modern environment, and decent food. We ordered the angus beef plate each, with wakame broth for me and spicy miso for my friend. We also ordered popcorn chicken because we were starving; it actually arrived at the same time as the broth which started bubbling away. Servers were attentive but not obtrusive to our needs including managing the temperature of the broth. Two dipping sauces are included, a ponzu sauce and a goma sauce. Condiments to spice up your bowl and dipping sauces include chives, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic paste, chopped daikon, ground sesame seeds, and a red spice that I didn't try out. They also offer hot shots of habanero sauce, and I liked that you had the option of brown or white rice. My broth was a lot better after adding some soy and sesame oil, but all the condiments are a little confusing if you don't eat here often. The beef was finely sliced for fast cooking. I probably won't return to the area but if you're a Shabu Shabu fan you might appreciate this place more than I did. This new shabu place opened up to replace the only shabu shabu in the area. Though I found it to be pretty good since this is the case, it was rather expensive, with the Downtown Fullerton tax. Typically lunch specials are $10USD/pot, but this one landed us $16+ per pot, for just 5 pieces of meat in some cases. Pricey~ I would say the spicy miso broth most reminded me of Paper Pot Shabu in Diamond Bar, but definitely much more expensive. I enjoyed the intimate setting and bar seating throughout the restaurant, so someone can always be there to help you with your induction heat or give you more to drink. It was a trendy place to be, even for lunch, but definitely not worth the hefty price tag. I think this place will survive if they lower their prices. I know this won't be able to happen long term since they are in a high-rent area, but I would suggest maybe a "happy hour" or something like that. Week day lunch specials, even. Just something to bring down the price so other people with lower budgets can enjoy it. It's definitely not bad in terms of the food that you're getting here. Parking is as horrendous as can be in downtown Fullerton. We always look for the back streets. Sakura Shabu Shabu is a blessing in Fullerton. I have scoured for a Shabu Shabu place that offers Spicy Miso Base or any other flavor based options, other than starting from scratch with water, like the majority of Shabu Shabu places in the Orange County. We would often go to Jazzcat Shabu in City of Industry or Ichi Ichi for some fusion shabu. I am glad there is an alternative here. *Chicken Karage - I love Chicken Karage(karaage) in Japanese places like Mitsuwa and most of the ones i get are from drum or thigh, which are dark meat. This one was white meat and not my favorite side. haha i'm a Sith. That would have made it tons better. If you like white meat chicken nuggets, you wouldn't mind this appetizer. This also comes with a nice mayo aioli. That helped. Worth a try, but wouldn't get again. **Spicy Miso with Premium Beef - This is the standard. This is what I've been wanting in this Orange County area for a long time. This broth is lighter than most spicy miso broths that I have tried but it is still flavorful. The standard amenities come with the shabu like tofu, vegetables and udon. You can also add hot drops to make it much spicier. This almost made my cough my lung out for the spice. I suggest two drops. It also comes with side dish sauces to dip your meat. Great place to go, I plan to go here multiple times because of its location. It still doesn't fare the same as my favorite place Jazzcat. They have the wings that I like and the T-Rex option to get more meat. If you are familiar with Shabu, thin slices of meat can only go so far without wanting more. You want to get full through the soup. I want my meat, and this place gives a standard size. I came here after Mokkoji wouldn't seat us 2pm because it was past last call and they were about to closed. That's an anger-inducing story for another day and another page. Sakura came to our rescue. The main difference is that the portions are actually pretty expensive, yet small. 9 pieces is not a lot of meat, and an add-on plate is basically the same price as the main plate. The pricing is definitely weird in that regard. With that said, the quality of the meat was very good. I got the grass-fed prime and the 1855. Both were well-marbled and tasted delicious. There is a slight difference in quality between the two, and it's kind of noticeable, but still, good. Their spicy miso and sukiyaki broth were also decent. Interesting that they didn't offer egg though for the sukiyaki. I can definitely see myself coming here for a meal before a night out in DTF. I've passed by Sakura dozens of times, but was always hesitant to give them a try because of their trendy yet slightly unwelcoming appearance. I'd have to say I'm not a fan of their fluorescent/neon(?) lit floors (sorry not a lightbulb expert), and the fact that the walls are all glass, so it basically looks like the customers are in a brightly lit display case. Not exactly the ambience you would want when eating shabu shabu, definitely more of a bar/ish vibe. But once we got our food, all of that didn't matter anymore. We were told to order individually, so We ordered 2 combos, beef/salmon, beef/lamb. I believe it was slightly under $25 per combo, and it was more than enough food. I got spicy miso, the broth was really good. The fiancé added 3 spicy drops .. I wouldn't add more than 2, it's a creeps up on you kind of spicy. Overall, the meats and veggies were great quality, fresh, and delicious. The price is reasonable compared to the average shabu place, and our server was friendly and attentive. You can go to a nice sit down restaurant and get a nice steak for that price. You can go to a AYCE kbbq for that price. Prices here are really high, portions are very small. Meat is charged by oz. 6 oz will cost you anywhere between 24-29. 8 oz which is really a small amount starts at around 25 to 32. With these prices you'd think you're buying some valuable illicit street drugs. Nope. Just beef. If you plan to actually feel full, don't come here. The dishes come with around 3 oz of various veggies, 2 cubes of tofu, a sauce of your choice, and cabbage. Again; all the sides in here cannot possibly cost more than $1-2. These are bottom barrel simple veggies. You're given rice cooker rice and frozen noodles of your choice. Again nothing special. I'd rather have meat and veggies than two different carbs. It felt like I was eating prisoner food. my main gripe is the broth, the one thing you should get right if you have a shabu restaurant is that. Broths will cost you $1-$3. I ordered the miso. I found it completely lacking in flavor. Honestly I just tasted water the entire time, even after I had boiled down my broth and put many ingredients in it, desperately trying to bring some life into this tasteless water broth. I had to fish for the non existent thin little pieces of protein the entire time, but by that time the flavorless broth had taken out all the beef flavors from the slice. I found this experience really disappointing, as always yelp hypes up any place they come across without regard. The tray you're given is disproportionate to the distance of the shabu pot. As a result, if you're a small girl you'll struggle with getting stuff from plate into pot. Slice gives cheap me rice and noodles, skimps on meat and veggies. I'd rather see a place give more veggies, cut down rice and only serve noodles, or serve actual real portions of meat. In all, there was nothing memorable or remarkable about the food, the broth, the veggies, the meat, or the execution. Went here for the first time with friends. We were greeted upon arrival by the staff and were seated right away. Our server Marie went over the menu with us and answered all our questions. She also made a stellar recommendation for the tonkatsu broth, which I requested spicy and it went so well with the meats and veggies. Our server was very prompt to refill our drinks and clear unneeded dishes. The food was great, and the restaurant itself is well-kept. The ambience makes for a nice, casual dinner and the glass windows give it an open feel. The counter-top set up makes your table area seem less crowded. Will be back! read more
