I opted for the kuro lunch set - which comes with tonkotsu ramen and I chose a fried rice for my side. The ramen was oh so good - it's not too garlicky but rich pork flavor. I love What's Up Men! A group of friends and I came in not too long ago and the service was super fast! My only grievance is the takoyaki is overly sweet. I love takoyaki and get it whenever i see it on a menu, so i was excited to share it with my friends who had never tried it before. When we tried it, however, it literally tasted like an octopus donut hole, and my friends were looking at me funny for even ordering it. I was so disappointed since I was super excited to even see it on the menu as I hadn't had it since being in the bay area for school. Aside from that, the ramen is great and comes out really fast, and the servers are all super on top of it every time i've come in. This is a staple for CSUF students as I've heard and when my friends went there, this place was recommended and hyped by them. Ages ago, during Titan-con, the anime/nerd convention run by the college, my friends and I decided to grab some ramen here. I could barely fit in the car since I couldn't take the Oda Nobunaga hat off of my head without taking off the wig, so that was a very hilarious memory. We came slightly before the weekend lunch rush so we didn't have to wait, but I can see this place getting super busy and fisted. There's bar counter seating (which we got) that surrounds the entire kitchen area and a decent amount of tables, but knowing people's love for ramen, and how a lot of the OC is a hellscape, it can get quite fisted. Service was friendly and welcoming, being in such a busy area and near a college, I'm sure staff have seen and experienced much more and polite people in cosplay weren't too much of a shock. I got their Aka Ramen which is made from kara (spicy) miso. Comes with 2 pieces of chashu and a seasoned soft boiled egg. I'm not a fan of beansprouts, so I made sure to donate this to a friend. Nice rich miso broth, and like many Japanese restaurant places (that don't have the ability to super build and customize), it has a slight heat, but not super spicy in the slightest. Totally impressed with this place! I came here for a late lunch on a weekday and there was no wait (around 1pm). The restaurant is pretty small inside and I almost got lost finding the storefront! I got the chuka soba (chicken broth) with a lunch special size california roll (4pc). The ramen tasted really authentic. Came here on a Sat at 12:30pm and was able to sit down right away. It was busy, but thankfully there wasn't a waitlist. Service, by Angel, was very fast. Took order immediately and offered water. Food came out quick within 5 mins and finished meal within 20 mins. AKA which is Pork Broth Tonkatsu is good, and hot, but spicy. For ramen, I think Chuka Soba is one of those noodle dishes that you can eat everyday, whereas Tonkotsu or Miso might be too heavy for every day consumption. Their Chuka Soba here has the perfect balance of umami, saltiness, and toppings. The toppings include bamboo, spinach, half egg, Naruto, two slices of chashu and seaweed. My favorite is the flavor oil that is so fragrant in such a clean soup base, it gives a huge amount of flavor. I usually come for lunch and order their combination with comes with a side and ramen. In short, great hole in the wall spot for authentic ramen. IiRC, I tried to take my +1 here years ago but the place was so busy w we couldn't even get our names in. Tonight, the place was packed but we were able to get a table for 3 in short order. We were hungry, so we ordered a few things off the appetizer menu and a large hot saki to share. The teriyaki chicken was a perfect meal for my "little." It was tender and not too sweet. We also ordered a spicy tuna and a California roll. They were great additions to our bowls of ramen to fill us up. I ordered the tonkatsu and it was delicious. The broth was rich and the pork was tender. Walked in at around 10:30pm (I love a late night dinner) and were immediately sat. The ambiance is super casual with tons of young people enjoying themselves. One thing about me, I am super duper picky about my ramen. I really only enjoy a handful of places and I was pleasantly surprised with my meal at Whats up men! I opted for the spicy miso and gyoza. This spot closes at 1am which is a winner. Not only does it close late but the bowl of ramen was sooo good. . Love the ramen noodles it's like cooked perfectly, not hard or soft. The noodle wasn't too thick or thin either. The soup base was umami and flavorful. The egg was perfect. The portion was great for a midnight snack. . Service was quick and food came out quick like less than 10 minutes. Quick dinner and go back to the hotel to sleep and take off for flight.
