The only small disappointment was the cold soba. The balance between the tsuyu and the noodles was very good, but some of the noodles were clumped together. They could have been loosened a little more thoroughly during preparation. I went back and forth between four and five stars, but there really isn't another place in the area serving tonkatsu at this level. We eat relatively quickly, but the ice still hadn't completely melted by the time we left. 100% started a soba kick for me -- I've had it 4 days in a row, twice homemade and once elsewhere, but 88's remains on top for me. Fullerton finally has a great katsu and udon place!!!! This is already my 6th time here and everyone I bring with loves it here. Their food taste, quality and presentation are all really great. The atmosphere is very clean and comforting as well. They serve their katsu with wasabi and salt and it really brings out the best flavor of the meat! I strongly recommend this place especially with kids. My kids are very picky eaters but I know they will eat so well here. Our server Jessie was really nice and accommodating as well. When I told her that my daughter has sesame seed allergies, she asked if her allergy was only to sesame seeds or oil as well (very rare for a server to care this much to ask). We came in with a party of 8 around noon on a Sunday and were seated pretty quickly after adding our name to the waitlist on the tablet up front. Each table also has a tablet for ordering, which made the process super easy. I tried the 88 Tonkatsu ($16.88), Spicy Tonkatsu ($18.88), and Fishcake Udon ($13.88). Portions were generous across the board, but the pork was unfortunately a bit dry. The spicy tonkatsu dipping sauce stood out as it had great flavor with a nice kick. The udon was just okay; the noodles were thick and chewy, but it only came with a couple pieces of fish cake. Each katsu set came nicely presented with sauce, cabbage salad, miso soup, white rice, pickled jalapeño, and kimchi radish. There's a decent amount of indoor seating with an open layout. With the new sauces and items, I had to try the curry katsu. I think the breading is better now than it was the first time. So definite 5 out of 5 for the curry katsu. The only thing I would do differently is to ask for the curry in the side. As it is served now, the katsu lays on a the curry sauce which soaks the katsu and doesn't allow it to remain crispy. Also the first time I visited the servers were really friendly. This time, not so much. The two girls were okay in terms of service but neither had smiles. It was all business for them. Ordered the Katsu with cheese, it was accompanied by lightly salted miso soup, two dipping sauces, two banchans, sesame cabbage salad, and rice. I enjoyed every bite of it. Katsu was crisp on the outside, kept all the juices on the inside, paired very well with the tomato based house cream sauce, and every complimenting sides made the experience that much better. So ya, when I'm in LA, and think Katsu, I'd probably default to this place 88 Katsu! Saw this place popping up on social media and I'm always down to try a new Katsu restaurant so was excited to give this place a try! They have a waitlist you can join from your phone. Thankfully the food came out pretty quick. I got the Tonkatsu with a side of curry and it was excellent 10/10! The skin was golden and crispy and the pork was extremely thick, juicy, and flavorful.
