Yesterday, October 1st, I got a catered lunch box to-go from Chilban, the catering company that delivers to our company. I had tried them before on Tuesday, August 11th, and I remember the food being delicious. However, yesterday was a bit different. The sides included rolled eggs omelet, beef bulgogi, kimchi, stuffed cucumber kimchi, and seaweed soup. All the other side dishes were tasty, but the beef bulgogi was quite tough, so I stopped eating it halfway through. Also, the rice seemed like it was old--it was cold and hard, which was disappointing. I still like that their side dish selection is clean and tasty, but I hope they can improve on the tough bulgogi and the hard, cold rice in the future. Recently, someone in the singles group chat room that I run as a leader ; she asked for a good catering company recommendation in the OC area, and I recommended Chilban based on my good past experience. Food was very good, don't get me wrong. I would come back for the food. It's like getting KBBQ on the go. I appreciated getting lots of sides, but my boyfriend would fill it all with meat if he could. The service was what ruined the experience for us. We tried to be understanding as the customers in front of us were being difficult. It was very rushed and not welcoming at all. I felt embarrassed not knowing what I wanted in 0.2 seconds even though it was our first time. The sides change weekly so we didn't get time to look at anything before being pushed to order with no customers behind us. Really enjoyed Chilban and I can definitely see myself coming back for a quick and affordable Korean lunch! The concept is kind of like a Korean version of Chipotle, where you build your own meal. The bowl is $10.99 and the plate is $15.99. I personally think the plate is a great value because you get your choice of base, proteins, and FIVE sides, plus soup and seaweed. The sides are actually one of my favorite things about this place. There are a lot of choices, and they change some of them every week. They post the week's side dishes every Monday on their Instagram, which is really helpful if you want to see what's available before going. If they have the fish cake and glass noodles/japchae, I would definitely get those! They're classic Korean sides and seem to be available pretty regularly. I also really enjoyed the rolled egg omelet and some of their pancakes. For the proteins, my favorites were the pork belly and bulgogi. I love being able to get a little bit of everything in one meal instead of having to order several full-sized Korean dishes, especially when I'm eating by myself or just want a quick lunch. Overall, the portions are good, the prices are reasonable, and there are so many possible combinations that you could come back multiple times and order something different. One of my new favorite places for quick and yummy Korean food! This place is located pretty close off the freeway so it's super easy to get to. There's a large parking lot in a plaza with other restaurants and small businesses. Inside the restaurant are some tables if you choose to eat there. The workers are extremely friendly and were super patient with me the first time I went. My indecisiveness caused me to take a long time with all the choices available. You start off with your base (white rice, purple rice, salad), then your protein, and then 5 different sides. I believe the sides change weekly which gives you an excuse to keep coming back to try new things! I had the bulgogi and spicy pork, dumplings, japchae, fish cake, meat cake, and eggs. Everything was super delicious and the spicy pork had a good moderate kick to it (but my spice tolerance isn't very high). We got: kimchi jeon pancake (highly recommend), sausage (reminds me of the one in Korean army stew, so good!), squash salad (similar to a potato salad; they let me sample it and it's good!), fish cake, kimchi, japchae, bean sprout (all good and standard), and omelet (would skip next time). There are so many delicious options to choose from, and I love that the banchan changes regularly so there's always some variety. It honestly feels like such a great value for what you get. The chive jeon i got with my plate was cold, and I wish it wasn't. I know it's because of the chiller to keep all the other sides fresh! The odeng/fishcake tastes a little fishier than I prefer, but I enjoyed it. Their kimchi is really fresh, and has great flavor, including their cucumber kimchi. I came for the soft opening here as I was happy to hear that there was a Korean dosirak (Korean bento) place that feels close to home cooking. You build your own dosirak box, which will come with rice, soup, several side dishes and 1-2 protein options - total of 7 options to eat with rice (meaning behind their name) There are tables available for customers to dine in, otherwise, food is served in packed in to-go dosirak box. For the price, you are getting a lot of food. I did come here near closing time so some of the options were sold out for the day. I love that they plan on having different side dishes each week. That will definitely get customers to want to come back to try different combos of dosirak. Food overall was nice, felt closer to home cooking like I've mentioned, however there are some notes to take here to improve for the grand opening: *Their fried dishes were dry and hard. I am keeping in mind that I am eating food that probably has been sitting for a while and they weren't going to be frying fresh food at the end of the day. The flavor is nice but as someone who has TMJ, I could not finish the bacon rice cake and the spicy fried chicken - it was too hard for me to chew. I would avoid eating fried items when coming in close to closing hour. *Having the sauce option was nice, but it felt unnecessary to use it for the most part since almost all of my dishes were seasoned. The sauce is nice to have if you get grilled salmon and/or tofu steak, but you don't really need it for the rest. Everything else was solid, I would like to still come back for another try, perhaps for lunch next time to see if the quality would be a lot better during prime hours. I'd rather come here if I want dosirak though because I'm tired of the same dosiraks from Korean markets that are also mediocre in taste.
