One of my new favorite places for quick and yummy Korean food! This place is located pretty close off the freeway so it's super easy to get to. There's a large parking lot in a plaza with other restaurants and small businesses. Inside the restaurant are some tables if you choose to eat there. The workers are extremely friendly and were super patient with me the first time I went. My indecisiveness caused me to take a long time with all the choices available. You start off with your base (white rice, purple rice, salad), then your protein, and then 5 different sides. I believe the sides change weekly which gives you an excuse to keep coming back to try new things! I had the bulgogi and spicy pork, dumplings, japchae, fish cake, meat cake, and eggs. Everything was super delicious and the spicy pork had a good moderate kick to it (but my spice tolerance isn't very high). The box and presentation is so nice for a quick take-out type place and if you're one who likes your different food in separate compartments, this place is for you! I saw a cute reel of this place on my Instagram and I wanted to come try it because the bento box idea was so adorable and unique! I really liked the nice variety with your own choice of protein (like bulgogi, spicy pork, etc.) as well as different side dishes to suit your tastes. The service and greeting when we walked in was amazing, even as we were getting our food. I loved the bite-sized pieces of the spicy fried chicken and I think the japchae was my favorite of the side dishes. Cute mom and pop shop! Between me and my hubby, we got to try the bulgogi (standard), spicy pork (really good would recommend), and fried chicken soy (also would recommend). The protein portions looked small but was still a good amount of meat. The bento boxes were enough for 2 meals for us. The sides/banchans are what impressed me and seems like they rotate it. We got: kimchi jeon pancake (highly recommend), sausage (reminds me of the one in Korean army stew, so good!), squash salad (similar to a potato salad; they let me sample it and it's good!), fish cake, kimchi, japchae, bean sprout (all good and standard), and omelet (would skip next time). Really enjoyed the unique concept and yummy food at Chilban! The setup is like a korean chipotle where you build your own dosirak, which makes it really fun and customizable. I loaded mine up with bulgogi, purple rice, japchae, kimchi jeon, odeng bokkeum, korean rolled omelet, seasoned soybean sprouts, soybean paste stew, and a pack of seaweed - and the amount of food you get is genuinely impressive for the price. You could easily split it with someone or save half for another meal. The food tastes home cooked and you can tell the ingredients are good quality. The chive jeon i got with my plate was cold, and I wish it wasn't. I know it's because of the chiller to keep all the other sides fresh! The odeng/fishcake tastes a little fishier than I prefer, but I enjoyed it. Their kimchi is really fresh, and has great flavor, including their cucumber kimchi. I like their bulgogi more than the spicy pork. All plates come with a soup and a side of seaweed. The tteokbokki is a little spicy and sweet, but tastes amazing. I didn't order the kimbap because it looks a little old, maybe made early in the morning, or it looks dry. I came for the soft opening here as I was happy to hear that there was a Korean dosirak (Korean bento) place that feels close to home cooking. You build your own dosirak box, which will come with rice, soup, several side dishes and 1-2 protein options - total of 7 options to eat with rice (meaning behind their name) There are tables available for customers to dine in, otherwise, food is served in packed in to-go dosirak box. For the price, you are getting a lot of food. I did come here near closing time so some of the options were sold out for the day. I love that they plan on having different side dishes each week. That will definitely get customers to want to come back to try different combos of dosirak. Food overall was nice, felt closer to home cooking like I've mentioned, however there are some notes to take here to improve for the grand opening: *Their fried dishes were dry and hard. I am keeping in mind that I am eating food that probably has been sitting for a while and they weren't going to be frying fresh food at the end of the day. The flavor is nice but as someone who has TMJ, I could not finish the bacon rice cake and the spicy fried chicken - it was too hard for me to chew. I would avoid eating fried items when coming in close to closing hour. *Having the sauce option was nice, but it felt unnecessary to use it for the most part since almost all of my dishes were seasoned. The sauce is nice to have if you get grilled salmon and/or tofu steak, but you don't really need it for the rest. Everything else was solid, I would like to still come back for another try, perhaps for lunch next time to see if the quality would be a lot better during prime hours. I'd rather come here if I want dosirak though because I'm tired of the same dosiraks from Korean markets that are also mediocre in taste. The rolled egg and soybeans were good but the soy glazed chicken and spicy chicken balls were hard. Heating them up the next day, they became unflavorable. I also didn't like the Japchae and I felt the kimchi was old. Maybe it was just not my day to try it, so I'll go and try it again.
