Skinflints is difficult to describe--like many Bay Ridge institutions; it is filled with quirks; inconsistencies; all manner of "this is the way we've always done it, so that's how we keep doing it" - type of thinking.
Its a tired, wheezy old joint; its been around for a God-damned long time and thus really depends on a lot on people who love it for simply staying exactly the same. If it didn't have these loyalists, I'm not convinced it would survive.
Basically, it tries to be "all things to all people"--with the least amount of effort (again, like every place in Bay Ridge does). The result is that it does almost no "one thing" really well.
Clientele(for example): if you arrive early on a Friday the place is filled with blue-haired seniors; and then within an hour it is trying to be a singles hotspot; with chicks swanked out in their best midriff-baring tops. But then what cramps that scene will be groups of fat, sloppy, cap-wearing, jersey-wearing, "sports nuts" tramping in all sweaty, to 'watch the game' for happy hour.
Service: energetic and trying hard, *most of the time* --but frequently capable of complete breakdowns in courtesy and customer handling. There are many horror stories about the waitstaff suddenly becoming intractable and confrontational. Meanwhile, the barstaff (off-duty FDNY) are much better; pro bartenders who offer adequate buy-backs and reliable courtesy.
Another issue: the utter lack of good music. Seriously, they have a sound system programmed to cycle through every puke Top-40 song of the last 5 years. Until they do something about their music; no one will ever take this place seriously as a night-spot.
Decor: standard 'antique English pub' style rife throughout Bay Ridge but in this case it actually does have all original woodwork and tiled floor. However, this is perhaps what accounts for the faint smell of age-old vomit, stale beer, and musty urine which greets your nostrils as you enter the front door. It won't ruin your meal, but it is a definite 'signature smell of Skinflints'. YellowHook Grill has it too, FYI.
Finally, let's get at the food. SF's is renowned for several dishes more than others. For example, the much-touted burger. Yeah sure, it might somehow be an acceptable burger --for some people--its thick and juicy--but they insist on serving it on an ENGLISH MUFFIN. And that makes it a joke. It just doesn't work --not more than once, for the novelty. Why do people keep ordering it? Mystifying!
Next: the pork ribs. If you've never had authentic, genuine ribs from any other source then yes--you may think these are the most wonderful ribs you've ever tasted The meat literally does 'fall off the bone'. But proper ribs don't do that, and as soon as you try proper ribs --ones which aren't smothered in gobs of sauce--then you will understand that these ribs at SF are actually the corny old "1970s style ribs" that no one makes anymore. Get it? Skinflint's is in a 1970's time machine (and will they *ever* change the oil painting behind the espresso machine??)
I come now to a sincere and heartfelt 'prop' and 'kudo'--the very much neglected and unsung CHICKEN POT PIE. Folks, this is a bonafide TREAT and really the best item on the entire menu. It goes above and beyond the standard pub fare (which SF's offers in every other category). If they lose this dish they lose everything. Its wonderful on a cold or snowy night. So toasty and filling; a really gorgeous meal.
On that note, I'm ending my review. Skinflint's ought not be a #1 destination for an evening out in Bay Ridge; but as a #2 or #3 destination it is perfectly fine. I'd hate to see it ever close; but I know it will never be anything more than what it is now. read more
