    a pint of beer
    Andrea R.

Cue Barry Manilow: Her name was "Dulce," she was a Brew Cat. It's no secret I love a good brewery, and it's no secret I'm a cat-holic. I purposefully seek out opportunities for the two worlds to collide, so I bopped up to Brooklyn for a self-guided brewery cat tour. When my first three stops yielded no cat sightings, I didn't have much hope for Five Boroughs. Luckily enough, when I name dropped "Dulce," the bartender offered me the opportunity to meet the Queen herself. Precious, baby, box-sitting Dulce, as sweet as her name alludes. Cat aside, Five Boroughs is a real gem. It's open, spacious, and inconspicuously located among neighboring warehouses and quiet streets. The beer is plentiful, and tasty, and on a Sunday night, they had football on their TV. There's lot of seating and board game options. One could easily spend copious amounts of time hanging out. To top it off - the bathrooms were clean and the bartender was incredibly friendly. It was quiet on a rainy Sunday afternoon, and I really enjoyed sitting at the bar, sipping a brew, and flipping through the local magazines (and meeting Dulce). I wish it was easier to get to - it's kinda in a spooky, unassuming part of town (at least in the rainy darkness), and the closest subway isn't super close. No food, which is par for most breweries in NY. Some of the best beers of our NY visit were at Five Boroughs. We'll definitely be back, if not only to see Cat Queen, Dulce.

This brewing co is hidden amongst industrial buildings. It was a surprise when we pulled up because it's the only bar in the area. Totally modern beer garden. They serve popcorn (bags) but otherwise they welcome take-out. The bartenders are incredibly kind and always remember us when we visit. The beer is great too! AND great prices. Flights are $15 each.

I've sort of kicked my beer habit in recent years, opting for lighter, hard seltzers, which is very in line with the tastes of my generation, but the beer at Five Boroughs makes me feel no regrets. Every beer that I tried at the taproom had a very smooth, crisp taste that I don't always connote with beer and reminded me why I used to love beer in the first place. I enjoy the buzz I get from beer more so than from any spirit, and I didn't feel heavy and full after a couple of the lighter drinks they had on tap. Their taproom is quite spacious, with a big open room and high ceilings. Since drinking inside is verboten in NYC right now, I perched myself on one of their outdoor seats they have set up under tents. With outdoor drinking though we are at the mercy of Mother Nature, and while it didn't rain, this is a particularly windy street, and gusts of wind sent their plastic chairs moving and their tents shaking, but their employees came out to help make everything more secure, which was really nice of them! My favorites include the really refreshing "Just Add Lime," the seasonal pumpkin ale, and the citrusy summer ale. I appreciate that their menu includes a wide range of ABVs, from lighter ~4% ABV to stronger 11% ABV drinks, so you can decide what kind of adventure you want to go on. The folks who work here are super friendly and they allow you to bring food to drink alongside their beer. The vibe is great and I could easily spend a whole afternoon here playing cards with friends, getting some food delivered, and sipping on their very delicious beer, pandemic times or not.

Five Boroughs Brewing Co. Sometimes I get lazy when writing reviews. I really don't mean to, but ya know, life gets in the way and occasionally I just experience way too many new places all at once. I mean it's not like I visited Five Boroughs Brewing Co. months ago. It was only a few weeks back, at the beginning of December, but if my experience (good or bad) isn't anything that makes me want to start those fingers typing, then I'd say it tells you something. Hmm... Well the first thing that my brain tells me is that I don't often find myself in such a deep part of Brooklyn. It was due to my buddy and his girlfriend that had us traveling so far west, but due to some Yelping and our opportunistic location, we ended up at FBBC. I'm glad we did as I've known of them for a few years now, having only sampled a handful of their beers. Of memorableness, only Tiny Juicy (their hazy-ish session IPA) stood out in my mind for flavor. They did brew a beer for the broadway show Come From Away which is...cool, but not something I'd have again. Regardless of what's in cans, you'll get more straight from the source anyway and I was excited for that. Walking into Five Boroughs I got a feel which reminded me of a few other tap rooms (KCBC for one) though this shouldn't necessarily be a strong negative. Their lax style and semi-low lit vibe set a chill mood for the hour or so we were there. The staff, on the other hand, was mixed on their welcoming, perhaps having a little too much of the "Brooklyn hipster vibe" going on. Needless to say, it didn't stop us from ordering up a flight and a couple of pints. Being the driver, I sampled some sips of that flight, sharing with my buddy. The menu was a variety of IPAs and a few lager-style brews so we tried to mix together a little of everything. Looking back, I suppose I would've loved to see a stout or brown ale (something for the cold weather perhaps?), but maybe I'm jumping the gun (I mean it was only early December). And c,mon, Josh, you have to give credit where credit is due. Five Boroughs did have WinterPenn on tap, their winter warmer beer, which we totally tried amidst our flight. Unfortunately, it wasn't anything memorable as the spices it mentions didn't really come forward. This could've also been due to having just tried Circa's out of this world winter warmer beer only hours prior, but even so... I will give "mad props" to Tic Tac Toe, a session IPA (different from Tiny Juicy) that really hit the palate nicely and was more of a shining memory of the place. I'm also totally not going to forgo mentioning the Industry Ale which was brewed in association with nearby Industry City (a spot I still need to check out). So it's not like Five Boroughs is doing anything wrong here, but perhaps they're just getting a little, just a smidge, too meshed together with any other ol' brewery. In the ever-growing beer scene, some originality is needed. Just sayin'. Overall, I like Five Boroughs, don't get me wrong. They have a few great beers and several of them are canned and available near distributors by me, giving further opportunity to try more of their stuff. Though when it comes to the tap room and the entire experience of the place, I find myself at around 3.5 stars, heading south. This strongly goes against their Yelp review star total, though maybe it's just me and feeling like my history with their beers and what I've tried doesn't stand out or constitute the four star salute. If/when I find myself in the area again (perhaps for Industry City?) I'll consider another trip here in hopes that there's a little more to be loved. Only time will tell in the land of the Boroughs.

Remotely located in an unassuming section of Sunset Park. Moderately sized interior with both bar and table seating throughout. Sixteen different beers on draft, with 10oz. and pint-sized options available. Started off with the Sticky Sticky IPA ($7), a collaboration alongside Twin Elephant Brewing, a creamy and citrus hop ale. Second round was the Oscura Lager ($7) - a caramel amber that would pair well with food. Speaking of, only some chip/popcorn options to snack on, though they do let you order around for delivery. Vibe for a Saturday evening was more mellow than expected. Service is solid as the one bartender was enough for the crowd. Good for a quick beer at a reasonable price.

Beer + board games = my kind of place. We came by on a Sunday afternoon in November and it wasn't packed at all. The brewery seems very kid friendly as there were many of the board games that were kid appropriate (sorry, connect 4, candyland.) and all the pieces were there! Our 4 year old had fun playing games with us as we tried out several of the beers there. We enjoyed the Tiny Juicy IPA, Guest beers from Endless Life Brewing include the coop beer Mat Overboard (very good). I was not a fan of the hard seltzer - Strawberry Mojito and will stick with the beers next time. Looking forward coming again with some friends for board game and beer fun.

I was so excited to visit Five Boroughs because who doesn't need a cold beer on a scorching summer day. Their taproom opens at 4pm on Friday. I arrived at around 5pm and was surprised to see that most of the tables are occupied. As other Yelper mentioned about the QR code ordering, you can now order at the bar which is supposed to be helpful to me as a first-timer. I always ask for recommendation when I am at a brewery but I didn't this time. I walked to the bar and told this guy that this is my first time here. People usually replied back with some recommendation but this guy gave me no smiles so I figured not to bother this time. I asked for sampling. He gave me what I requested. I then proceeded to order and he replied back with "um-hum" in an uncaring tone. He did his job but I just didn't feel welcome and left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Came here with a page out of the Brooklyn Pub Pass. I've always been intrigued by Five Boroughs since trying their hoppy lager awhile back. I walked in here today and was greeted by two dogs at the door. There's literally no better greeting in my opinion. As I made my way to the bar, I was warmly welcomed by two more adorable doggies with slobbery kisses. It's safe to say that Five Boroughs is super dog-friendly. This brewery is in a heavily industrial area, so if you walk here from the train you become very aware of your surroundings once you get past third avenue. Don't be discouraged by all the warehouses, you'll eventually reach the beacon of craft beer after a couple blocks of factories. Besides from all the loveable puppers, their beer selection was on point! They had a few interesting choices, which included their Dunkel and Honey lager. Both were delicious; their Dunkel was dark and malty with hints of chocolate and caramel, and their honey lager was refreshing and sweet. They also have a Czech Pilsner which is traditional and satisfying. They offer different sizes of beer if you want to sample the different styles they have and also have flights available too. Since they don't have their own kitchen, they have snacks available for purchase and allow you to bring in your food. They also have board games available in the back if your conversation is lacking or if you're just in the mood for some good old fashioned competition. The bartenders were very attentive. They were ready to refill my glass at every last sip. I am very eager to return to rekindle/initiate new friendships with adorable doggos and also sip on kick-ass beer! I hope Five Boroughs is here to stay.

I'm not much of a beer drinker but this brewery is pretty awesome. I came here on a Friday night with my husband and brother and it was not packed, which was great for me because I hate crowds. It's pretty easy to get to, if you are by the R train. Otherwise, it might be a nuisance. I first heard of this brewery from my brother and we got to sample their beer at OctFest a week ago. Five Boroughs is clean and the staff is very friendly. I had the mango saison and it was pretty good. They also have a few snack options. The best part of this brewery, for me at least, is their selection of board games! Call me a nerd, but I love board games. They have Connect Four, Battleship, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Epidemic, Cards of Humanity, etc. They encourage you to buy food from local businesses and eat at the brewery which is pretty cool. We ordered some food on GrubHub from a nearby sushi place (food was not that good, but that's for another review). All in all, I recommend Five Boroughs for a fun day.

Came here on their grand opening around 7pm where there was a decent crowd with no seating left. I was surprised to see people with babies and kids.. especially in a brewery but I guess it's suppose to be family friendly. Good selection of mostly IPA's but absolutely no dark beers so my friends and I weren't entire impressed. I got both the Double IPA and Mango Saison both of which I liked but it was half the quantity they offered for the same price as the Wheat Pilsner. For $7, the Double IPA and Mango Saison came in half pour while for the same price, the Wheat Pilsner came in full pour. Not a huge deal I guess but I wonder what the reason for the pricing is. There was a photo booth in the back so we had some fun before we left and got two pictures with props they had available. I'm sure they'll only continue to improve as it is their grand opening but come give this place a try for a chill night. There's even a strip club next door. ;)

My boyfriend runs around the neighborhood and had accidentally stumbled upon this place two months ago before they opened. When we came back at night to check it out, all we saw was the stripper club next door - WOOPS! (Fun Fact: 50 cent owns it). Per chance, we went to a craft beer festival in the city and met the owners who said they'd be opening up the Five Boroughs taproom in a few weeks. When we came back from our trip, we were really excited to check it out. I've grown up in this neighborhood all my life, and while i detest gentrification, I really appreciate the ability to have a quality taproom nearby - makes me feel like I'm upstate in a big microbrewery place like Burlington. The space is large and the furnishing is really cool - lots of wood with a metallic finish atop, which will leave a noticeable ferric smell to your hands. It's both child and dog-friendly, which is a huge plus. They also have board games, so it feels like a nice local place where they care about their patrons. Onto the beer now! We tried all of them via two flights {$12/5 beers, your choice}. To be honest, none of the beers really impressed me, but the Pilsner and the Tiny IPA were solid. The Tiny IPA definitely tastes like it has more hop in it than the 3.5% advertised, and it actually had more punch than the IPA, in my opinion. The Double IPA was a huge let down. We also had the Kentucky Beer Cheese which is a spreadable cheese with Ritz crackers that is a Kentucky local thing. While it's unmarked and difficult to find for those who aren't actively looking for it, I'd say it is worth the trip if you're in the area and are looking for a chill place to chill with friends. The staff is friendly and it's just overall a nice space that Sunset Park has desperately needed for a while.

Another cool brewery on the City Brew tours. This place is pretty far from me so I most likely would not have made it here if not for this tour. Theres a small sitting area but I doubt it gets so crazy busy since it's in a remote area. They have a huge brewing in the back that was cool to see. We tried 4 beers- Tiny Juicy IPA, Grapefruit Gridlock, the Winter Penn, and the Gose. The gose was pretty sour and we were told is very close to the original German- style gose. They don't have food but you can order and have it delivered to the brewery. Pretty cool selection of board games too.

This place was pretty awesome for the beer lovers! I dropped by on a Saturday night and it was definitely more calm than I expected. So if you're looking for a quick beer with friends and don't want the crazy scene, this is it. Pointers: -doggy friendly even indoors! -TONS of table games available -tables are air yourself and first come first served -at least 8 beers on draft -flights available and CHEAP! Important: No FOOD! BUT you can bring your own or order! They have a stack of local food menus that deliver Not sure if it was a one time thing but the bartender wasn't as welcoming. We asked a question about a particular beer and his response was a bit passive aggressive. He and another employee seemed to be having a disagreement which clearly put him in a bad mood but I don't think it was directed towards the guests so I wasn't offended. Overall, dope spot! And very open space. I believe you can plan events here as well.

I sat at the bar and after looking at their cocktail menu, I ordered a French 75. You can imagine my surprise when I was served a drink in a single rocks glass which is basically what you'd serve an old fashion or other cocktail in. A French 75 needs to be in a flute. And at first, I thought maybe they don't have any flutes. Which still perplexed me because why have a French 75 on the menu if you don't have the right glassware. But I looked behind the bar and lo and behold, saw a flute. So not sure what that was about. The drink itself was ok. The other weird thing is that when I ordered, she rang it up and handed me the handheld device to pay. Since I was sitting at the bar, I'd expect to at least be asked if I wanted to open a tab or to just wait. Payment before the drink was made just rubbed me different. And of course, gratuity was tacked on, also rubbed me wrong. Because while I planned to tip, adding your own tip automatically to 1 drink is icky.

Flavors of jalapeño, honey, orange, vanilla and chocolate. They have a HUGE beer list. Most of the menu is Japanese inspired. The bartender was kind, attentive, and very laid back. Other than a couple patrons here and there, I was the only person in there on a Wednesday afternoon. They say it gets busier on weekends. They also have a DJ on weekends, usually playing R&B and hiphop. They played mostly jazz when I was in, and it was very relaxing. I came in for the vibes, but this would be great for a workspace as well.
