The bartenders are all very nice and if you want to try a beer you can just ask and they'll give you a little sample cup. First Impressions: super cozy and fun little spot to meet up friends. They have food to order options as well as a pantry/refrigerator where you can buy all the items needed for a decent charcuterie board to enjoy at your table. Tons of beer on tap, I don't know Judy about beers but I know about a good time with friends and I liked it here The Noms: we bought bread, cheeses, and pâté to share. I never met a charcuterie board I didn't love and this wasn't an exception. We also ordered the pretzel (good but too much salt... I shook some off and it was perfect)... the fig jam and arugula grilled cheese was fuckin amazing. Excuse the cursing but it was damn good. I could eat two more if I wasn't so stuffed! In Conclusion: 10/10 would recommend this spot. I moved to Crown Heights in December so was on the lookout for a new local bar. And I'm so glad I found Covenhoven. First the beers are great and at a good price. Second all of the staff are wonderful. Very welcoming and fun to interact with. Third they have a GREAT backyard that is chill and a lot of fun. And fourth - they are incredibly kid friendly and are happy to put up with my rambunctious four year old from time to time. :) And finally - it's actually a great place to work from during the week between 2-5. WiFi is strong and nothing wrong with having a pint while getting some work done! read more

I always love the huge variety in beer selection at Covenhoven and this evening was no different. Sours, ciders, and meads you likely won't find many other places. Their havarti, fig jam, and arugula grilled cheese is an absolute favorite every time. Super cozy and warm with a wood stove in the winter. The backyard is delightful on warmer nights and there's a small selection of games. Was a favorite when I lived here and I always make a point to come back when I visit. Cute little spot for drinks - loved the ambiance of the place and the wide selection of craft beers and small snacks available to purchase. One thing I noticed was the upsell of the prices to drink a can of beer from the fridge at the place - around $3-4 more just to have a glass. I checked out Covenhoven with some friends on a Friday afternoon/evening while visiting Brooklyn. This is a happening little spot with a wide selection of beers on tap and in a large refrigerator for purchase. So many options to choose from and I enjoyed looking through the fridge section for the wild and quirky beers I've never heard of before. It was fun sitting out on their outdoor courtyard. There's some basic pub fare food as well if you get hungry. I would definitely stop back in again. read more

Great neighborhood spot to try and buy new beers. They have beers on tap and also a refrigerator full of a large variety of beers. You can buy the beer from the fridge and drink it there as well. The prices are great! It is cheaper than normal bars, especially if you buy beers from the fridge and drink there. The draft beers range from $6-$9 and the refrigerator beers range from $5-$9. They also have grilled cheeses, cheese plates and other small eats. We came around the holiday times and it was decorated in a festive way with Christmas trees, lights and pine cones. It is a great place for a date or to get together with friends. There's also an outdoor space that would be lovely in the summer. The CUTEST little backyard patio bar situation! One of my favorites in the Prospect Heights area and a quick walk from any of the subway stops, it's definitely somewhere I've taken numerous friends for casual hangouts. It would definitely work as a COVID-safe, casual date spot as well. Lots of beers on tap here, with an even larger selection of craft canned beers as well. I finally got to remove Covenhoven from my bookmarks tonight. Covenhoven is a beer shop, beer garden, and cafe all in one. When you walk in, the first thing that catches your eye is the illuminated refrigerator of endless beer across from the bar. On the last door, they have a selection of meats and cheeses that allow you to create your own board with an optional baguette for an extra cost. The bar has an extensive chalk board that lists all the taps they offer in the various sizes. They had about 15 different choices with mainly local brews. The bartenders were eager to help and very friendly. They also have a limited food menu of bratwursts, grilled cheese, and hot pretzels. I got the cheddar and truffle hot pretzel which honestly was the perfect munchie. It came out piping hot and with a good amount of flavor. Then I got the cheddar and jack grilled cheese with bacon. It came with the two fluffiest slices of bread. A little on the burnt side but still gooey and comforting. Next time I stop in I'll try the bratwurst and knackwurst. Covenhoven bares a close parallel to Banter in Williamsburg, with the exception of a large stock of craft cans and bottles that can be ordered to stay or to go. I thought the vibe was very warm and welcoming and the prices were just as well. It was a bit out of the way from the Queens but I would love to return soon! read more

Great beer selection including a ton of gluten free options. The charm of this place has to be the outdoor patio (and the fact you can serve yourself any beverage from the coolers). The red wine (can't remember the type) was actually pretty good, as well! Sometimes the queue lines up next to the backdoor; other times it's a free for all when you order. If you fall out of sync, they can get a bit testy, so imbiber beware! Haven't tried to food but heard the grilled cheese is banging. The folks working there are knowledgeable about the beer and if you ask them for recommendations, they'll let you know exactly what you should order! And now, the food... I ordered a grilled cheese because I was pretty hungry. I didn't realize there were different options/flavors that I could get. I ended up ordering the havarti cheese with fig spread and arugula. The bread they used was enormous. I don't even know how to explain it but the sandwich was bigger than my head haha- please, PLEASE order a grilled cheese to accompany your beverage. I really warmed up to this place over several visits here last year. The draft lists are always excellent, with a great assortment of styles and reasonable NYC -level prices. The inside is cool, though a bit cramped by the bar/fridge area, especially when someone is perusing the fridge for the bottle selection. The outdoor area is wonderful - if you can grab one of the in-house board games, you can happily Jenga or Connect Four away the drunken hours in a lovely setting. The sandwiches are mediocre (and you'll probably have to flag someone down and wait awhile to get one anyway), but they have a cheese fridge where you can put together your own cheese plate to go with your beer(s) of choice, which is a concept I love - I'm well qualified to curate my own cheese plate with beer pairings, thank you very much! The service is a bit hit-or-miss - some of the bartenders can be a bit aloof or downright rude if you have questions about the beer styles (even when the bar isn't crowded and it isn't an issue of time). I notice this trend in some craft beer bars, and I just don't get it. Shouldn't you enjoy evangelizing about your passion? And, more importantly, should beer be anything but joyous and fun? This place is our favorite new haunt, though we only just encountered it. The bartender was open and friendly, the draft selection exquisite, the wafting aromas of bacon, hot pretzels, and grilled cheese enticing, the playlist on point (think Chet Faker's Gold), the assorted cheeses in the cheese display enticing and seemingly well-vetted, and the row upon row of bottles and cans in the long wall of a fridge astoundingly impressive for the size of the shop. We looked out onto the garden in the back, which was made friendly and delicate by the numerous bright flowering plants back there, but a friend of a friend wasn't quite dressed for the cool weather, so we stayed inside as we played Cards Against Humanity, one of the many games they have to borrow inside. I live nowhere near Brooklyn but for a few of my friends this is their local. As a result, I've been here several times. It is a small and cozy craft beer place that has a wide draft selection as well as multiple fridges full of bottles. Their food offering is grilled cheese-centric, with bratwursts, pretzels and chili as well. The bar is long and narrow with seats that fit approximately 6 people and a patio out the back. The bathrooms could be cleaner but they're passable. There are a bunch of games for you to play while you're drinking e.g. jenga, trouble, connect 4 etc etc. The staff are pretty decent, helpful and knowledgeable in that low-key 'I'm a cool beer guy who works in a cool craft beer bar in Brooklyn' kind of way. They will let you try samples and they're fairly quick at getting your drinks and food out. I come here for the IPA and double-IPA selection and the harvati grilled cheese with thick buttered bread, arugula and fig jam. It's seriously to die. I hardly eat dairy but I need to order this sandwich whenever I come here, it would be rude not too. Getting quite fond of this place as a group hangout in the area - they're very reliable. It's getting pretty popular these days (read: Friday and Saturday nights) but we've been fortunate to wrangle a seat quickly for the most part. This should be your Sunday hang. For real. Super friendly staff knows beer and can match you with something you'll like. You'll know because they give you a taste until you find one you like! Beers on tap and in bottles are diverse and intriguing. Best parts: the noshie and games You can pull together your own cheese and meat platter from the selection in their big fridge. Easy peasy and you won't need a bank loan. The food compliments the beers so of course you want more. We happened upon this tiny (long and thin) bar on our walk to the Botanical Gardens. There is not much in the area (that we saw, at least) and it was a great little break on our long walk from the subway to the Gardens. They have a ton of different craft and other unique beers and ciders and the two bartenders were very friendly and welcoming of us as tourists. This was one of my favorite bars that I've visited in Brooklyn. First off, they have a great beer selection. All craft beers on tap with a handful of local options. Pricing was extremely reasonable too with a solid variety. Additionally, they have a huge glass panned cooler with plenty of bottled and canned options. Great options all around. The atmosphere is laid back. They play 90s hip hop and have a great selection of board games. We ended up spending a couple hours here drinking and learning cribbage. The perfect place for craft beer nerds. The hub is one, so we end up here quite often. So many draft options to choose from! Thankfully, they often have a couple ciders or fruit flavored gose/sour beers so that I have something to drink too. Food menu is limited, but solid if you need a snack. There are few things in this world I love more than a good beer. But here's the thing - when you're a beer snob like me, you find yourself on a hedonic treadmill. Even good beers end up seeming subpar when you compare all your experiences to the best you've ever had. Enter Covenhoven. I would consider it one of the best beer bars in Brooklyn, if not in all of NYC. Their tap list is a very respectable rotating list of 16. All styles, with a legend on their chalkboard. I was in a sour mood (not that I was angry, just that I wanted some sour beers), and they had the medicine. I was actually impressed that they had some local brews that I've had before, like Yazoo from Tennessee, or Kent Falls from Connecticut. Very rarely, if ever, see them on tap in NYC. And if the tap list isn't enough for you, they have a whole row of fridges. You can pay extra to drink them in store, or take them home at a discount. A really amazing selection all around, whether you want local crafts, large format domestics, or even some crazy imported brews (like a purple IPA). There's also an amazing backyard. Tons of seating and greenery. Zack the bartender is awesome and really knows his shit. Ask him about any brewery, and you'll learn something. Covenhoven is a delightful beer bar in Prospect Heights boasting both obscure brews and spacious back garden. Unfortunately, I came while it was still frosty out, so I had to make do with the still-charming front room. I came on a Saturday night for a birthday party and it was quite busy-- we had to mill around for about half an hour until we lucked into a big table. Cozy, low-lit space. The area at the back gets tight, as you're wedged between people waiting for tap service at the bar and perusing the fridges of to-go beer. On those taps are a good range of styles; you'll find your standard IPAs, stouts, and lagers, but I also spotted saisons, goses, sours, ciders, and Belgians (usually I'm lucky to find just one!), all from breweries you probably haven't heard of, often from New York. And in those fridges are one of the most ingenious ideas I've seen at a bar: meats and cheeses priced by weight so you can assemble your own cheeseboard. They also have a biergarten-y menu including bratwurst and pretzels; I had a perfect ham and gruyere grilled cheese. Service is solid-- they stay busy but were quick with recommendations. Drafts are $7 and up (note higher-alcohol styles come in smaller sizes). I believe there's only one bathroom, as I had to wait a while. Crowd felt like late 20s Brooklynites, non-pretentious. There are also card games available to extend your friend hangout. I would come here off-peak or on a weeknight if you can to make sure you can grab seats and enjoy the space to the fullest. read more

I was so happy to check this place out while in the area at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden recently. Cute little outdoor garden area, as well as many cozy tables inside and seating on the street out front - they really have seating which should make just about anyone happy. Great draft selection, and plenty of cans available for sale in the bottle shop. Was delighted to try a new-to-me sour, as well as an old favorite IPA. The sandwich I had for lunch was probably the real star of my day - a delicious grilled cheese on HUGE, soft amazing bread. I feel like this sandwich is the thing dreams are made of.
