I realized there are not too many reviews online about this party, so I thought I would write this…read morereview to give everyone a better idea of what to expect when they book the Supernova Balldrop Party. This party is hosted by the Novotel hotel. I was there for New Year's eve 2018 party. First, I'll tell you about my expectations for this party and then I'll talk about what I experienced after actually attending it. After watching and reading this party's promotional material, I was expecting this event to be spectacular. From what I read, I expected that I would be "guaranteed" a "direct" view of the balldrop in Times Square. I was also expecting the viewing area to be heated because the tickets said that if I select option 4, I would be in a "heated" east side patio. Second, let me tell you about what actually happened. The management and security were not very friendly. The view, for me and my friend who came with me was non existent and definitely not "direct". There were too many people crammed into a very tight space and it was almost impossible to see over them to view the actual ball drop in Time Square. As a result, I missed the ball drop (pictures attached to this review). Also, it was freezing cold in the patio. Even though, there were two small heaters in the East Patio, they were along the edges far away and definitely not enough to heat the entire patio. I am not saying everything was bad at this party. People were definitely dressed up spectacularly. Most people were there to be seen. Almost everyone was classy (except the couple of people who threw up all over the dance floor towards the end of the night, and this one drunk girl who had to be carried out of there passed out on this one guy's shoulder). However, all the stuff about people getting a "guaranteed", "direct" view, "heated patios" and "spectacular views" is false advertising on the organizer's part. In conclusion, the advertisements for this party are a big scam. It's a bait and switch. They just want to cram as many people as possible into a very tight space. This party was way overpriced, and even though I have not yet mentioned how bad the food was above, it needs to be said here--the food was horrible. This party is all hype, and empty promises, but no actual delivery. It definitely is not worth the $599, $699 or the $899 they charge per person for Option 4. Please people, be smart and do not waste your time and money going to this party.

There were two sets with a 30 minute pause in between. Pros: - Sound system was so good. For EDM, the audio was great in that former factory space. - Visuals and lights. I was mesmerized by the overhanging light thing (I don't know the technical terminology, but you'll know immediately what I mean when you see it flashing above you) - Security was actually really cool - they were super professional and did good crowd control, but kept the vibe positive. - I kept it light with any extra things on my person, but it was good to see there is a locker system that you could utilize if you needed Cons: - Perhaps it was a one-off that night (this was around the time when there was a semi-heatwave), but the ventilation. People were so excited about Underworld that I think many people just powered through, but Dear God! I was waiting for people to pass out from heat exhaustion or someone to shout "MEDIC!" I didn't hit up the merch room, but saw it from afar. Also, I didn't get anything from the bar. So I can't speak to those aspects of the venue. This is where my eyes opened to the world of poetry+ spoken word- and come here in the early 90s to be the spectator and listen to poets. Founded by a Puerto Rican, it attracted fearless activists: poets such as Sonia Sanchez- who read here, (and mesmerizing in person), so did Amiri Baraka, Allen Ginsburg- who all, lay everything on the line. With that being said, those black, brown, white poet leaders, paved the way to a new generation. In honor of their 10th Annual Block Party, Nuyorican Poets C. blasted an open-mic email and hubs wanted all in. Quite honestly, my husband is a closeted poet. He knows that. Even Nuyorican Poets Cafe know there are folks exactly like him. Hubs has always had a wonderful and creative knack for words that jive, words that don't necessarily rhyme but just 'go'- plus hubs does not have stage fright. Nuyorican P. C.'s Saturday event gave hubs as well as other newbies the energy to get up on stage and rock. And my husband did it with conviction and ease. Nuyorican P. C. is a 2 (3?)-fl building with black walls, it's low-lit, has a small bar area that sell water and maybe some snacks on their main floor and a balcony area on the 2nd. The feel seems discreet- but it isn't. Prior to this block party event, it's been ages I've been here on regular nights- but I can sure tell you, it's always full force. Take advantage while Nuyorican P. C. is still open before they shut down for renovations. If you're a closeted poet, this place highly speaks to people who are otherwise unheard or who don't know where they can read their poetry. Just take the stage and do it.

Williamsburg was still in the early innings of its transformation, with places like SEA already hinting at what was coming. At the same time, Calvin Harris was equally early in his journey, years before becoming a global, arena-filling superstar. In a venue that intimate, the sound was mind-boggling, the party was incredible, and there was a feeling that something much bigger was beginning even if none of us fully understood it yet. I was young, dumb, reckless, and wonderfully carefree, living through a refreshingly simple chapter before New York darkened my heart. That night remains legendary and, quite simply, absolutely incredible.
