Yummy yummy, Skinflints!! I've been here a few times when my aunt and I don't know what to eat, it's our go-to place especially since it's a few blocks away from her apartment. She finally took me there after raving about it over and over again. The first thing I noticed was the decor. It's got that old time saloon thing going on and looks like it hasn't been updated in a while, obviously to keep the whole vintage thing going on. The food is good, definitely not the best burgers in town, but its kept me coming back a few times more. I love how their burgers are served on english muffins! I've never had a burger served on a muffin so that was really a new experience for me. They're not cheap on the fries either. I can't stand when a burger joint gives 5 fries or less, not cool! But Skinflints definitely gives you a whopping portion adding the second "yummy" in my first sentence. I took a star away for the service. Jesus this place is SLOWWWWW. The staff is very nice and super talkative, but not in an annoying way. But every time I come here, it literally takes forever to get some food. And a drink I might add. I ordered a water once and it took the waitress 25 minutes to get it to me blahhh. Overall, Skinflints is a pretty chill place to eat and the burgers are very good...I don't know what everyone is talking about! Oh and also, the bar can get VERY loud....even on dead days. My go -to bar! I have had a lot of food off the menu and have yet to have anything I've disliked. Everything has been good. Shepard pie and burgers and the chicken pot pie are excellent. Interior that's been around since the place opened back in the day. I like that you can still find these old school places in bay ridge. The bar itself is nice and subdued. Music isn't deafening and is pretty much 102.7 FM. Drinks tend to be well mixed and not skimping on the alcohol. The crowd itself tends to be older and very Brooklyn, but I like that. Solid burger, massive at that. It's nothing out of this world, but it is an enjoyable burger that will leave you feeling full for the rest of the day/night. Service is solid here, as well. I have only tried there burgers, so I can't really speak on anything else on their menu. It's a neighborhood staple and it's got a classic feel in the bar portion of the restaurant. If I remember correctly, it's a converted ice cream shop that the owners changed to a bar/restaurant when they bought the property and kept the old-time charm it has in the bar area. Just had this place today for the first time and MANNNNN was I missing out. Passed by this place so much and never tried it. It's got a very nice vintage old look to it. Kinda like a bar you'd see out of the 80's (Cheers). It's quite nice. The burgers are fantastic. They're juicy, tasty, and isn't served on a soggy sesame bun, but an english muffin. They cooked the burger perfectly, which for me was medium rare. The fries are good but nothing crazy. They're definitely better than your standard frozen generic fries. My friend got her burger with the mash potatoes and gravy and it was pretty good. The service is also good. The waitress was very quick to come by to take our order but we never felt rushed. She was very nice as well. Overall, if you're looking for a great place to watch some games, grab a great bite, and relax, then this place is definitely the one. Skinflints is an icon of Bay-Ridge from the seventies. Well known for its hAMBURGERS, which are very good as well as their BABY BACK RIBS, which are suculent and fall off the bone. The atmosphere is also from the seventies. Unfortunately the owners haven't put any money into the place since 1970 other than buying 5 HDTVs. I"M NOT KIDDING!!!! Service is good but could be better. My boyfriend and I love Skinflints. He consistently orders the pot pie, which he loves so much he even gets it in the summer (I think eating pot pie in the summer is just wrong). I have had a HUGE, delicious chef's salad here, but my favorite are the burgers. They are AMAZING. Seriously, the best burger I have ever had, and it's served on an English muffin! The atmosphere here is definitely old school, and the pub is pretty dark, so if you are looking for a bright, vibrant, newer bar go elsewhere. We also have had consistently good, if not amusing (if you're sitting at the bar) service here. This Irish pub restaurant/bar serves a very good burger. They know how to cook it perfectly medium rare with all the juices running down my mouth and fingers as I take a careful bite. The ribs and wings looked good, but we were only here for some lunch. Next time. My only problem is that the service is slow and kinda out there. Also great burger, but why the English Muffin? Started coming here in the 80's. My husband and I had our "rehearsal dinner" there 33 years ago. We moved from Bay Ridge to CT 25 years ago. When in Bay Ridge we look forward to coming back. The burgers are delicious! They're served on an english muffin bun with plenty of cheese. The american & cheddar is more akin to nacho cheese, which I love but some might not. The ribs are also amazing and fall right off the bone. If you're not a huge fan of ribs slathered in bbq sauce, make sure to ask for them dry (they're still cooked in it, but you won't get the extra helping). The chili is also pretty good with it's side of raw onions, and you can get a pretty tasty plate of chili cheese fries, though the fries themselves aren't anything to write home about. Skinflints is an iconic Bay Ridge spot. With its 1920's interior decor, it definitely brings you back. This spot is known for it's two stars; their hamburgers and their baby back ribs. If you go for the burgers, definitely get this medium or medium-rare. Large patties, The cheddar that goes on top of the burger is absolutely for lack of a better word, delicious. Definitely one of the top five burgers that you can get in New York City. Their baby back ribs just absolutely are succulent and falls off the bone. The crowd is family friendly. I love this place. It's like you're grandma's basement from 1987. The decor has no rhythm what so ever, low lit, stained glass light fixtures, off paintings on the wall, some random cases with sailboat models and statues, and furniture outdated by 15 years. Talk about reminiscent of my childhood. Some friends and I went for dinner the other night and sat in what would have been the smoking section back when you could smoke in a restaurant, and watched the game on an off color old tube TV. The food was top notch. 3 appetizers and 3 mains with beers and under $70 which is outstanding. And the best wings I have had in years. A different twist, just breaded and deep fried to perfection, with different flavors of dipping sauces. But cooked to perfection. For the main, although I have heard nothing but good review on the burgers, I opted for one of the evening specials and got he chicken pot pie. Wasn't disappointed, that's for sure. Skintflints loses a point on cleanliness, it's an old Irish pub, and it's not the cleanest or newest of places. The kitchen is spot-free, though, and that is what ultimately matters. Just source slightly better meat, vegetables and ingredients. The neighborhood (Bay Ridge) is devoid of late night snacks that are at all healthy. The service staff is entitled, berating and generally unpleasant. It's as though none of them want to be there, including the bartenders who seemingly have NO interest in accumulating new regulars. I've wasted 5 or 6 meals here, and now every time I pass by, I think of how great it would be if they re designed the menu a little, if they stepped up their service. So close to my house yet so far from desirable. The tuna delight is pretty good although most certainly canned tuna. It is found only on the lunch menu; its available at dinner but the server needs to "check with the kitchen." The French Dip is enjoyable while you eat it, but later, ugh. This place is for those who seek to watch a game at a bar with salty banter between patrons and barkeeps. We came in about 11 on a Friday night, and it wasn't very crowded which was nice since we were able to get seated immediately. The waiter was great, always checked up on us, and made sure we had whatever we needed. We started off with potatoe skins, and chicken fingers. The potatoes skins were great, we had it with all the fixings including the chili and i must say the chili was really good. The chicken fingers were good, nothing to rave about. We then ordered a burger with fries, and a french dip with mashed potatoes. The burger was great and perfectly cooked and the fries were nice and crispy. The french dip was great as well, it was served on garlic bread. The mashed potatoes are awesome, i would defenitely suggest getting them! Like most places in Bay Ridge, if you didn't grow up going here or if you don't know the people behind the bar from high school, you will feel like an outsider. That being said, Skinflints has an OK/ decent beer selection, but a slightly better liquor selection. The bartender that served me was nice, but not very attentive. Being one of maybe 15 people in the bar area, you wouldn't think it would take 15-20 minutes to get a refill. The food did smell fantastic and I do want to go back and try a burger. ATMOSPHERE: Came here with my S.O and my parents, and it was the perfect spot for a family dinner. Cute bar in the front, woodsy feel inside with appropriately dimmed lighting that made for a warm ambiance. Restaurant seating in the back with 2 rooms, and white lights handing throughout the restaurant. Enough room among the tables for a private conversation without feeling cramped or overcrowded. FOOD: I had the avocado salad and it was SUPER fresh and delicious. Had a vinegarette dressing which was a little creamy, tangy,and tasty. The other guests had chicken piccata, marsala, and francaise, and they all loved their plates. The server even accommodated any changes we had to our dishes and they came out perfectly and timely. DRINKS: Beers were fresh and wine was a bit sweet for a cab, but still wasn't bad. OVERALL: Would definitely reco for a bar night, or a dinner with the family! If the decor is your biggest complaint about this place, then you shouldn't be leaving a 2 star review. I mean come on, this place is OLD, and I like that. There's comfort in a place that never changes. Anyway, when I'm reviewing a restaurant I go by taste, cleanliness, and service. Skin Flints is clean enough, I think it could be cleaner, but I also think a lot of the dirty looking parts are simply old and can't be helped. The service is the best, it gets busy and they have to run around like crazy but any staff member is willing to stop and help you, even if you aren't in their section, even if they aren't a waiter, that is what impresses me the most about coming here. Taste: The food here is on par! I love it! It's pub food to be sure, but it's pub food done RIGHT. The burgers are HUGE, tasty, and cooked to perfection. You want medium, you get medium, you want rare you get rare, you want well done burnt no pink, well you got it! I just hate that they are on English muffins, I hate English muffins. However, that just left me open to trying lots of other offerings on the menu. Chili - LOVE it. So good. I often come in and just pick up 2 orders of chili just because. Potato Skins - Probably Frozen, but big and filling. I think they stopped selling them though. Fries - Fresh cut, skin on fries. Cooked golden brown and SO good without anything else added. Roasted Chicken - AMAZING, roasted to perfection with a slight char on the outside. Steamed Veggies - I could eat these all day too, I never thought I would list some veggies as a must order, because they aren't anything special, but they are, because I eat them, and I hate vegetables. Sliced Steak Sandwich - Not what I expected when I ordered it, but oh WOW it was really good. It's a piece of steak that's not sliced all the way through, and placed on garlic bread - open face style. Chicken Francese - I knew better than to order this from here, and so for the longest time I never did, but as one of my favorite menu items I had to try it at SF too. Pass. It was ok, and edible (as in I didn't waste my money by ordering it) but not even close to what I expect Chicken Francese to be. French Onion Soup - I ordered this simply because it was all I saw at every other table around me. No regrets. It's pretty tasty. I came here at the recommendation of a friend who grew up in Bay Ridge, and I'm glad I listened to her. Now, I try to stop for lunch at least once when I'm in town. It's a nice cozy place, not too bright and not too dark, and the bartenders and servers are always friendly and eager to talk to me about plans while I'm visiting. Skinflints is know for their burgers, which are served on English muffins Their rep is well-deserved as they excellent. The fact that they're served on English muffins works out well for me because I like my beef still mooing when I eat it, and this can get messy on a regular bun. The nooks and crannies of the muffin work really well at holding the whole messy goodness together. I look forward to going back for my next burger on a muffin! read more
