Edna and I met for lunch with a friend who lives in Bay Ridge. Our friend always picks places we've never been to before... and I grew up in Brooklyn: Gravesend, Carroll Gardens and Brooklyn Heights, was there until I was at least 62. We entered this bright, cheery place on the corner of 3rd Ave and 86- it's called The Corner... go figure. Our friend was already seated so we were escorted to her table of choice. Our server came over and introduced herself to us. Did I hear right: Farrell? Yep. Like Irish I asked? Farrell started pouring water as we perused the menu. They were only serving Brunch. Oh well. We dove right in anyway. We started out with Oysters on the half shell and an interesting presentation of Tuna Carpaccio. I told Farrell the tuna was cut a little too thick to be a carpaccio and I made sure that she told the chef b/c I was going to put it in my review. Handhelds were the choice of the day: the ladies with Pork Belly (Cuban) Sandwiches and me, to be different, a BLT Crabcake. After ordering our first bottle of wine, the appetizers came out- originally destined for the wrong table. The timing of the courses were spot on. Then the entrees... huge entrees... very tasty entrees...with just the right amount of fries. I now know why Farrell asked the ladies if they were going to share. I've come to understand that the BLT Crabcake was their signature dish. Getting close to devouring our meals, we ordered a second bottle of wine. A French Shiraz (Syrah) blend that was perfect. I usually take a photo of the label but forgot. Timing again was spot on yet again. Dessert, Farrell asked, we obliged with orders of three espressos and a piece of olive oil cake with berries and cream. I didn't tell Farrell, but the cake was not as moist as I hoped for. Visited this spot for brunch. Food was mediocre but staff, ambiance, and space were amazing. The interior reminded my whole party and I of a beach resort we stayed at in DR, and the ceiling to floor windows allowed a lot of natural light to pour in. Staff were very patient and accommodating. Tiramisu pancakes - 4/5 I quite liked the flavor and texture of these pancakes. They were relatively flat and didn't exactly taste like tiramisu but I thought they were pretty solid pancakes overall. The flavor and texture are not what you would expect for eggs benedict. I struggled to finish this dish even after giving away the other half to my friends to try. Maybe the crab cake appetizer would've been a better choice. If they offer regular eggs bennies in the future, that also might be a better idea. I think it also didn't help that the presentation was really lacking. I think the other dishes looked great, it was just this one that missed the mark. My friend also ordered this and did not enjoy it either. Crispy chicken and waffle - 3/5 The waffle has scallions in it and I'm not sure if I like that or not. Glad we made reservations because it was packed by 7pm, and the waitress followed through on the instructions to put a lit candle on the birthday girl's dessert. On my first visit I had a really great trout special along with delicious crab cakes, and for dessert the tres leches cake was to die for. Max was a wonderful waiter, and the entire staff worked together seamlessly. Everyone checked on guests and made sure every table was taken care of. A special shout-out to Nicholas, who was constantly on the move all night. He was clearing tables, helping behind the bar, checking on guests, and even went out in the rain to bring in the outdoor cushions. His hard work did not go unnoticed. Felt excited when my girlfriend suggested to come for our night out. The atmosphere was intimate with a romantic feel. Our server Joe walked us through the menu and were able to accommodate mocktails for a couple of us. For starters, we shared Scallops (so soft and pillowy), onion soup (sweet), crab cake (mild), and samosas (savory). All were tasty. I had the porterhouse porkchop and I must say the apple was the highlight of the dish. The presentation was beautiful, the cooked apple was shaped as a rose. It was something about the sweetness that goes so well with everything on the plate. Oh, and did I mention the chop was moist? Came in shortly after 1pm on Saturday as a walk-in after we couldn't find how to reserve online and were seated right after. The decor is nice and fresh without being over the top. We ordered: a Cuban sandwich which I wouldn't go for in a non-traditional spot, but it was certainly on point, a burger which was yum and the egg was cooked to perfection and crème brûlée French toast. We were both very happy with the meal. The true star of the night, however, was the affogato dessert. Two scoops of the best vanilla ice cream I have ever had in my life -- with an espresso pour that was hand delivered by the pastry chef. The vanilla bean flavor was out of this world.
