    Pineapple cocktail

One of my favorite things about the bar culture in Japan, particularly at Golden Gai in Tokyo, was that the bars were so small the entire bar would inevitably have to have one conversation together. All the little bars made up all these compartments of conversations, such that you could leave one conversation and enter another just by walking a few steps left or right. Industry City reminds me of this in many ways since you can walk from business to business, building to building, and find yourself in a sake distillery, an avocado cafe, or this wonderful Japanese cocktail bar from the team behind the amazing Angel's Share. Getting into Oldies is a more casual affair than getting into Angel's Share, which is appropriate for Brooklyn. Slide into one of just 10 or so velvet green seats lining the bar and chat with the bartender. They have quite the selection of sake and Japanese whiskies, and I definitely recommend Akashi white oak if you aren't sure which Japanese whiskey to try. It's as smooth as the clever retorts you think of long after a heated conversation is over. There's also beer and cider and a whole list of spirit-free drinks like coffee with bitters and matcha soda with lavender syrup, but I had my heart set on the fresh fruit cocktails. I tried the pineapple and persimmon versions, both of which had just the right amount of sweetness and kick. A sprig of thyme garnished my drink and gave it a little aromatic I couldn't get enough of. I also got a little side of edamame with a tasty salt + pepper seasoning as the perfect complement to my drinks. The friendly service, delicious drinks, and plush seating urge you to stay awhile and maybe strike up a conversation with some friendly neighbors. Something about the cozy space makes you leave the cold interactions so common to New York bar culture at the door and willing to smile and make eye contact with the people around you.

I was excited at the opening of a new cocktail bar in my neighborhood - so long, I thought, would be the days of trudging to Park Slope or the city for good libations. Having experienced it, I realise I am not yet so lucky. Oldies came to my attention when a fellow teacher posted up photos from Sunday HH. They proclaimed that the persimmon cocktail was good and that the Japanese snacks were a delight. I decided to come here the next weekend with my partner, after filling our bellies at Japan Village next door. The vibes and set up are super cool - very minimal, but with that, limited seating. They proclaim themselves to be a reverse speak-easy of sorts - you have to get to the eatery they're connected to via the entrance to the bar. I was interested in their signature cocktails, and they said it would be the fruit infusions. After hearing the types of cocktails associated, I decided to order the grapefruit since it would have mezcal and campari. My partner went with a sake glass, since they had an impressive list of them. He got to choose his 2 oz sake cup, while I received my blow-torched, egg-white drink shortly after. We also ordered the raw oysters and fluke crudo to try. The oysters, while not to my liking, were incredibly fresh and flavourful. The sake was also excellent and aromatic. However, the grapefruit cocktail and fluke crudo were disappointing. The cocktail lacked nuance and fell flat - it didn't register as anything in particular, and while my partner argued bitterness, it didn't have enough campari to do so, not would that have helped. It was incredible "meh", and needed that extra something to even it out - bitters, probably. Fluke also tends to be on the milder side of flavour, and texturally was interesting. The yuzu peel and pink peppercorn were delightful, but there was too much shiso leaf shaved atop (not indicated in the description) which overpowered the experience of the texture and muted the other flavours. I really wanted to like it the dish, so I tried skimming some shiso off, which helped a bit, but only made it permissible. Because we're big on cocktails, we probably will not be returning, but if you're in the mood for sake or Japanese snacks, this may be your place. Also be warned that seating is EXTREMELY limited (about 10), so you should plan strategically.

Located in the up and coming Industry City, Oldies is a gem and was one of my favorite spots I visited during my NYC trip. My dad has been an avid Japanese whiskey collector since before I could remember and as of a few years ago, I started getting into them myself. So a bar dedicated to Japanese whiskeys, was completely up my alley. Echoing Morlene C, Yelp Brooklyn CM here... if you don't know where to start, I'd also recommend the Akashi white oak for it's smooth finish. The space is small and fills up quickly, with only about ten bar stools available. However, despite the size, it never felt too crowded. It reminded me of bars in Vancouver or even in Toronto where you could cozy up at the bar, chat with the bartender, and befriend your neighbors... basically Oldies gave me Canadian hospitality vibes. I stuck to old fashioneds the entire time, but I did have a few sips of two of the fresh fruit cocktails, which were extremely refreshing. Props to the bartender for making a mean old fashioned, as well. 3 or 4 of these later and I was a happy camper. I paired my old fashioneds with a bowl of edamame, which was a perfectly seasoned. Given the friendly service, dark, cozy vibes, and delicious drinks, this is a bar I'd hang out frequently in if I lived in Brooklyn. I'd highly recommend popping in for a delicious beverage (or three).

    Fresh Orangina

I got to know oldies while noshing from Wakuwaku outside- their menus and waiter service are combined right now for the outdoor seating. My drinks for the evening were the lemon sour special with soju and sore, and a lemon you squeezed in yourself. I loved the interactive part of the drink, and the fact that I could make it MY level of (very) sour! It was a super refreshing drink too! Then I got their homemade orangina. I was super excited for this, because due to some meds I take, I can't have grapefruit/grapefruit juice anymore- which, you guessed it, is in the bottled stuff. This didn't have any! And it tasted wayyy better than the bottled kind- fresh juice for the win! I'll be back for this! And I don't know whose cotton candy machine this is, theirs or Wakuwaku, but man I hope that thing sticks around! I'll be back!!

Excited to try more from this cocktail bar! They recently opened in Industry City and are one of the few places in the area that have a bit more of a relaxed and loungey feel. The items that really caught my eye are the fresh fruit cocktails, which are commonly found in Japan and less so here. They also have a bunch of food items that I didn't get to try, but will be back for for sure! Be sure to check the hours before you go, since they're not open everyday. But it's a beautiful space with a great ambiance that's worth checking out.

What a fantastic experience at this Japanese restaurant. The staff was great and everything was delicious. Me and two other friends had a variety of things from yakitori to katsu. Also had a cocktail as well. Everything was magnificent! Definitely recommend!

Real talk. I could tell you the bar snacks are amazing here (don't sleep on the corn tempura). I could tell you the drinks here are like drinking a symphony of complex flavors & aesthetics (Ukiyo and Kabocha Spice are standouts). But the real reason to come here is the team behind the sticks- Tiara, John and Isias are masters of the craft! Watching them mix a cocktail or entertain the customers so you feel like it's your home bar on your first trip? THAT'S the reason to hit Oldies!

    Etsu Dragon

Had some drinks at Oldies on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. I felt like they prioritized look over taste when it came to their cocktails, but it is a more relaxed space for a drink than the other bustling bars across the complex. Quality: Ended up at Oldies after bouncing around the Industry City for a bit. Ordered two rounds of drinks, which included the Etsu Dragon, a Lemon Sour, a Sake Sangria, and a Pickle Cocktail. They absolutely nailed the stylistic elements of each of the cocktails, as they all looked amazing and fun. I was a little less enthusiastic about the actual flavor. The first drink I tried was the Etsu Dragon, which was the prettiest of all the drinks we ordered. With gin, dragonfruit syrup, and egg white, it sounded like it would be pretty tasty. However, past the initial awe, you realize the challenge of even getting to the drink under the foam. And even when you get to it, it is a syrupy mess. The Lemon Sour was simple, but solid. Essentially just a vodka soda replacing vodka with shochu, but it also came with half a lemon to add to your preference. The Sake Sangria drink was good, just a little too sweet for my taste. While the Pickle Cocktail was cool looking, and exactly as advertised, sweet and sour. Quantity: No issues with the size or strength of the drinks. Value: $8-$17 for the assorted Cocktails. Ambiance: Oldies is located within the massive warehouse complex in Industry City. We entered from the outside of the building, it was unclear if there is another way in from the restaurant. We saw a ton of people lost looking for the restaurant and directed to the back. The bar is large, but has pretty limited seating. Only four high-top tables, which are squeezed against the walls to make room for a walkway. It is a stylish bar, though I think it would look better in the evening when it can set the mood with lighting. They also had an odd southern rock playlist going, which was not expected at an Asian themed cocktail bar. Crowd: We watched a fair amount of people head to the restaurant behind the bar, but only one other couple ended up sitting in the bar area. Service: The bartender let us know we could either order directly from the online menu or with him. It was clear he preferred the direct orders and I think we got a drinks faster because of it. Parking: Street parking can be found in the nearby area.

Cozy, old-school Italian vibes, staff speaking Italian like they're judging you lovingly, and Negronis that'll make you rethink every bad decision you've ever made at a bar. It's not a huge restaurant (so I would make a reservation): a few 2- and 4-seat high tops, maybe 6 or 7 tables, and a bar with about 10 seats. But the environment is warm and cozy, with low lighting and music loud enough to enjoy, soft enough to have conversations with your party, the bartender, or whoever else. The servers are all excellent. Very charming and friendly. They check in often, but not in an intrusive way. I've also seen the owner walking around, greeting customers, and talking with his staff. He's always around, and he's a friendly presence. There's such a great neighborhood vibe here - there are definitely some regulars here, and it helps create a homey atmosphere. The food here is outstanding. I have not had a bad dish here. The Caesar salad is actually made with several long stalks of romaine, so it stays crisp. The meatballs come with polenta around the plate, and it is fantastic. I've also had the hangover spaghetti (excellent) and the lasagna (amazing). Their calamari also has a few shrimp and (I think) some bay scallops, so that's a great addition. And their cocktails are outstanding - potent but flavorful. I don't get a chance to go to Red Hook much, but when I do, I definitely want to stop here. It's on the "main road" of Red Hook, and there are definitely some cute shops and coffee places around, and of course, there's Ikea not too far. This restaurant, though, deserves your business.
