No snickering. This is largely because of the sweet customer service. A three star review for more like two star quality. It is not saying much for a city that really lacks in Mexican cuisine. To say I did not give this restaurant a fair shake is like saying I only went to an ice cream shop and only ordered the cone. I went all out there, which is maybe why I received the service I received, or maybe it is because I sat next to what appeared to be my server's children. Whatever the case, I was treated well here. Onto the food. The Sopa Azteca (their tortilla soup) is a nice change from what I had at a previous Mexican restaurant. I would like the portion to be bigger and more meat in it, but I like the Mexican spices and the variety here. It is quite enjoyable. The Queso Fundido should be called a Queso No Divertido. It was awful to eat, with lousy flavor and texture. This is the second time I have struck out with this appetizer. It is safe to say I am done ordering it in this city. Nobody does it right. The Paella is nice, but at its core has the essence of a nice dish. Some parts are full of tremendous flavor, and some parts are dry and bland. I ate this all out of necessity, and also because once I mixed the bland with the good it actually turned into something quite pleasant. The chicken enchiladas I ordered because it would not be fair to come here and pass up something Tex-Mex as an entree. The chicken is inconsistent, well cooked in some spots, dry in others. The salsa verde has a lot of kick here, but the side salad and charro beans nearly ruin the whole thing. At least the Mexican rice is fluffy and has great flavor. Speaking Spanish to the staff helped curry points in the service department. I like family owned businesses. Everybody was busy and on point. So what if the food does not wow, I have given more, for less. Hence why this is a three star review and not a two star review. read more

The service and decor are spot on on for a cute night out. I tried the menudo soup and it was really tasty and flavorful, but this was a good realization that I personally do not enjoy tripe(lol). On my first visit, time and phone battery issues meant there was no chance for Yelp research, and when I asked for ordering advice, there was an emphatic recommendation for pastel Azteca, described as Mexican lasagna. This was a great item and we also shared it on the second visit. Fish ceviche also earned a second order thanks to the delightful blast of citrus. If you value Instagrammable colors in your seafood apps, try the aguachile, a fruitier/sweeter variety than usual. When prickly pear, strawberry and habanero combine forces you know it's going to be a good time. And the chile relleno was a knockout with a superb sauce. To quote Eric Bogosian, the ambiance and fine service are the "icing on the gravy." Everyone's been great on both visits; tonight, Johnny provided excellent service. The food here is decent. I tried the queso fundido with rajas and chile relleno with cheese. The queso fundido with a flour tortilla was pretty good - melted cheese with some spice. As the dish cooled, the cheese got a bit stringy, and the tortillas dried out pretty fast just wrapped in wax paper. The chile relleno was also nice. There was a bit of a mix up with my order and they accidentally gave me one with chicken instead, but they swapped it out when I notified the staff. The broth was savory, though the chile itself was pretty mild. It was a bit hard to cut into as it absorbed the broth. The sides of rice, beans, and salad were nice accompaniments. If anything, I could've used a bigger plate/bowl to make the food easier to cut and prevent the salad from spilling out of the plate. The prices were similar to what you'd find in Manhattan, at around $50 total with tax and tip, which was a bit unexpected. Though it was definitely a bit too much food for one, so I'd stick with just an entree next time. read more

The Ceviche alone makes this place a 10/10.... sometimes me and my girl will come in just for happy hour and split some shrimp ceviche it is literally so good i DREAM ABOUT IT! But beyond that the service has always been great, staff are friendly and attentive. The space itself is nice too. Well, that's a little background for my review of Coszcal de Allende. I patronized Coszcal at their original location on 68th and 3rd Avenue. I took a chance one night, many, many years ago in a galaxy far, far away...and went to their happy hour. The HH consisted of $5 margaritas and $3 street tacos. All delicious! They also had a beautiful courtyard that my friends and I gathered time and time again. I even took my mom there for Mother's Day. Thus, fast forward to post pandemic and my favorite Mexican restaurant was in a bit of trouble.. rising rent almost forced them to close.. like forever!!! Luckily, I believe my City Councilman stepped in and saved the day as Coszcal moved to 75th and 3rd and hooray!! Today, I met my Yelpie friend Sharon for an early dinner. I asked to sit outside in the courtyard but it was closed for maintenance. No stress.. we sat inside and decided to order plain nachos for appetizer and yummmy glad we did. You can get them with meat or guacamole. The nachos were fresh with just the right amount of cheese, diced greens, jalapeños and two delicious side sauces to dip. We devoured it! I was glad I ordered the Coca Cola jarrito to quash the Fuego ( fire) in my throat. Whew! Spicy! I ordered the cheese enchiladas with beans, rice, greens in a green sauce. This is the dish I always order because I LOVE it. And you will too! Sharon ordered a cheese quesadilla with the same sides that accompanied my entree. She enjoyed it as well. The portions are generous, the music was great ( Blondie, Tears for Fears) and the service was very courteous. The interior is really soothing, check out the cool bar! I stumbled on this cute spot today and I couldn't be happier. The walls had a Southwestern style- mud texture, light pastel colors and colorful skull/clown sculptures throughout. You can definitely tell that it had a feminine touch. If you arrive at this spot before 4pm, get the lunch special. It's after dinner and I'm still full because the chicken fajitas came with a salad, rice, beans, and tortilla on the side. It also had a nice sauce, but I still had to add the green & red pepper sauce to spice it up. I shared my food and still felt more than content & the presentation was beautiful. The other two in my party got the steak tacos w/ rice & beans and shrimp tacos off the regular menu. Everyone gushed at the flavor, portions, and price. Their new location has such an artist vibe. It's like being whisked away to a small town in Mexico. The yard has peaceful vibes and the interior is so beautifully decorated. Vibes aside, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Bay Ridge. Hands down the best guacamole I've tried (it's flavors are bright and fresh, with real chunks of avocado and no filler). The food quality is top notch, always fresh and delicious and in season. The bartender makes a mean drink, no matter what you order, and their aguas frescas are great if you abstain from alcohol. On a final note, the service is so friendly and attentive. I cant say enough good things about them.
