My friend and I went to Polonica around 2pm on a Saturday. I was getting my nails done across the street, and the restaurant had decent reviews, so we decided to check it out. We were the only people in the restaurant the entire time, though there were a few delivery orders. The restaurant has a homey interior, with callouts to their historic presence in Bay Ridge. We ordered the chicken klopsiki ($15.65) and the Hungarian pancakes ($20). Each dish comes with a house salad, which consists of red cabbage, sauerkraut, cole slaw, beets, shredded carrots, and lettuce. The salad had nice flavors and tasted fresh! I really enjoyed the chicken klopsiki, which is a chicken meatball. The meatball was moist, and the sauce had a nice flavor, like chicken soup. The only downside was that the mashed potatoes had no flavor and tasted like powdered mashed potatoes. I liked the flavor of the Hungarian pancakes, but the ratio of pancake to filling was heavily skewed toward the pancake, which was just fried potato with minimal flavor. Therefore, I would pass on the pancakes and just get the goulash if I decided to return. Service was okay. When I asked the server for recommendations, she wasn't enthusiastic, but I was asking generally, and I could have been more specific. She left during our meal, and we had to call someone to give us the check. So after giving us the food, service was nonexistent. This review is solely for the food as I had take-out. I never had Polish food ever before so my partner recommended this place. I have to say at first I wasn't too fond on getting something but I'm glad I did. The food was very tasty and delicious. I was surprised to come into the restaurant on a Friday night and see it empty! I am glad I came here because the food is absolutely delicious. I will definitely be coming again and will tell my friends to try! We got the potato pancakes, polish combination (kielbasa, pierogies, stuffed cabbage), and meat pierogies for apps. Pierogis get 5 stars! Best I've ever had. We had the mixed serving - potato-cheese, potato-mushroom and potato-spinach. One order friend and the other boiled (SERVED W/ FRIED ONIONS & SOUR CREAM OR APPLE SAUCE) we chose the sour cream. We also ordered the house salad which came served as an array of different colorful and tasty choices. EVERYTHING was absolutely delicious. We had fried potato/cheese pierogies, potato pancakes and the house salad. All the salad items - cabbage, carrots, beets - were super fresh and delicious. The fried dishes were hot and crispy, served with sour cream and apple sauce. Our server was really hustling and though we had to wait for some items, he spaced things out brilliantly so that we always had something in front of us. The place must have been renovated, as it is different from the older photos. It has a bright, modern, somewhat minimalist vibe that I liked a lot. Polonica is the perfect spot for comfort food. My friend and I ordered delivery from here after passing by the restaurant a few times. We both like Polish food but hadn't really thought of it as one of our Bay Ridge go-to's until Polonica. The portions are HUGE. I ordered the Kielbasa dinner with Polish sausage (served boiled or fried), topped with onions and mustard on the side. I swapped the side salad for an order of mashed potatoes. My friend ordered the Meat Pyzy, potato dumplings stuffed with meat (unclear what type of meat, but still delicious, nonetheless). We both had plenty left over and were STUFFED at the end of our meal. In reality, we could have ordered one entree to split, but wanted to have 2 different dishes to sample from. We're looking forward to dining in the actual restaurant soon, and will keep Polonica on our list of top spots in Bay Ridge. read more

I seriously don't understand how this place has a high score. It was awful. I don't mean mediocre or not great- I mean awful. The food, the service (a waiter basically told me to shut up), and the atmosphere (they were blasting a soccer game from the back) were all terrible. If you want fantastic pierogis, go to Veselka in the east village. It's not the exact same cuisine (Ukrainian rather than Polish) but many similar dishes and about 1000 times better. I spent most of my adult life living in the East Village where there is (there used to be much more) lots of Ukrainian restaurants. I love Veselka (though now it's expensive & fancied up), Kiev (no longer there), B & H Dairy, etc. That's what I was looking for. This place wasn't those, but it was special on its own. I missed the yummy Challah bread that comes with soft butter when you order a bowl or cup of soup. This place served plain bread with hard cold butter. Now to the good part...it's yummy & vegetarian friendly. Ok, no entries were vegetarian, but that didn't matter. I was there for the pirogies (lots of veg choices)& the soup (lots of veg choices). I was too full to try the crepes. At Veselka & B & H I always loved their cup of Mushroom Barley. They only had the choice to order a bowl and they had Barley or Mushroom. I ordered the Barley and it was delicious, filled with carrots & onions and top with fresh herbs. Pierogis were soft (order them boiled) & fresh. The onions they were served with could have been cooked a little more but were delicious. Until back in my old hood this is a decent Veselka / B & H Dairy alternative for me. My food that makes sweet, sweet love to my digestive organ, is blissful to me. Polonica, you remind me of being in my Aunt Danuta's house. The smells taunt me; The Polish singing comforts me; My bowl is empty - I need more! Polonica goes to show you that size doesn't count for anything! Yes, there is only five tables but seriously, suck it up and wait. Wait patiently or babcha will come out and slap some sense into you! From pierogies to stuffed cabbage, everything here provides you all the right ingredients to have a typical "what if" day as a Pole. Don't order a soup, an appetizer and two entrees like me and my beau did; portions are as big as Poland itself! Leave room for dessert! Why come? 1) because it's healthier than Burger Bistro right across the street; maybe.... 2) you can't afford to go to Poland 3) you want an intimate setting to watch your beau greedily slurp your borscht since he didn't know how amazing it really was. I will come back to Polonica because I love Polish food and it is the closest place to me for it. Their food is phenomenal. But g*ddamn, the waiter last time raised my BP. It was my birthday, so maybe the confounding factor was advancing age, but I don't think so... He screeched at us "no outside drinks" within seconds of sitting down and seeing we had a closed soda (I don't use bags and hold stuff in my hands/pockets). I saw him shouting something at kitchen staff in Spanish/Polish. Then I saw him banging on the door for Carlito (I think another staff member) to come out.. When he didn't come out, he himself BARGED IN. You know. I also get Type A sometimes and need to work, work, work. I get it- the pierogis need to come out hot. Customers can't pronounce "Zywiec". So despite the high cortisol levels running this place, I will definitely come back because they are so delicious. And it was all pretty funny, too. read more

I was craving chicken noodle soup, but felt too under the weather to make some myself, so I decided to order some along with some sauerkraut and boiled mushroom pierogies. Both were incredibly delicious. The chicken noodle soup didn't come with any chicken meat, which is fine by me. I'm not sure it normally comes with some or not since it was the first time I ordered it. But I still highly recommend it if you're okay with little to no meat because it tasted so fresh and homemade. The noodles are a thinner noodle instead of your traditional wide egg noodles. Normally, the pierogies comes with fried onions. But they were missing from my order. I didn't mind the missing fried onions, but thought it was still helpful to call and let the restaurant know. They were extremely apologetic and even offered to deliver them for me since I lived in the neighborhood. Small mishaps happens from time to time, but it's more important in how a business responds and treats their customers. Overall, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for both their food and customer service! read more

Finally had a chance to check this place out. Glad I did. I'm no expert on Polish cuisine, beyond having a few favorites in Greenpoint and the East Village over the years, I think this place is doing things right. Commenting on what I had specifically: - House salad was good, and the variety of cabbage on the plate was a nice touch. They include a good mixture of styles, although the portion was extremely tiny, not what you'd expect from one of the cheapest vegetables. I was really hoping for more to balance out the amount of meat, because you get a lot of it. - My sausage was huge (that's what she said!) but jokes aside, the Kielbasa was a large portion of meat, and that's great. It was cooked well, crisp on the outside, and juicy on the inside. Very nicely prepared, not burned or undercooked, flavors were great. Overall: Between the salad and kielbasa, I really enjoyed my meal. My only real complaint is that it was missing something, maybe it just needed more salad because it ended up being extremely one-sided. Just a big portion of meat with mustard after a few forkful's of cabbage. Maybe some potatoes would have completed the Polish Kielbasa Dinner. At $14, I think it needs something else for the price, which to be honest is kind of pricey for a single sausage (as large as it was) and a tiny portion of cabbage. But that aside, the food was good and will hopefully be back in the future to try more from the menu. read more

I admit that I came to Polonica with ridiculous expectations - "best Polish restaurant in NYC" sounded like it'd be really solid to me. Maybe it's because I've never had Polish food, and my palate is a little bit more sophisticated than meat & potatoes :x I got the fried pierogies with mushrooms and cheese (which everyone recommended). They were good enough that I forgot that they were vegetarian, but I did expect them to be less ... limp and oily. The sauces were good additions, but I would not recommend the applesauce. I'm not sure what it's supposed to add to the pierogies, but it was really just applesauce, and I did not think that the two went together particularly well. My friends got meat dishes with mashed potatoes, which were good but simple hearty food. Overall, I would recommend Polonica if you're interested in reminiscing over Polish roots or have a craving for meaty things, but it's not somewhere to go for a special occasion. This is the BEST restaurant ever !! The food is amazing, everything that we have ever ordered was excellent and super delicious. The delivery is always fast. I'm Russian and my husband is Polish, and I gotta say even he was surprised that our favorite tripe (Flaki) soup is exactly the way his mother makes. The white borscht (Zurek) is delicious as well. The pork chop is super tender and juicy, the meatballs with gravy melt in your mouth, and love the salads that come with everything. And we always get the cheese and fruit blintzes for dessert. We've never been more happy with ordering in. Everything on the menu is delicious and homemade. Complements to the Chef. We order almost everyday sometimes even twice. it's definitely worth every penny !! Cant wait to try their Bigos (hunters stew), it's made with sauerkraut, my mother in-law makes it every winter.
