AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This place was cool when I first moved here. Ever since, it's been a slow but steady decline. First, the service started to suck. Which doesn't surprise me, service sucks everywhere around here. But this shortly reached a new level of suck. I'll get to that later though. While the waitstaff became more and more surly and eager to rush you out the door, I guess there was an ownership change or something, because the last time I went, the menu was totally different - first, we noticed the allergy warnings and cheerfully thought, oh, okay. They didn't raise their prices like we thought. WRONG. They changed their prices, most notably for the vegan / veggie rolls (and took away some options). Okay, fine. Overhead is increasing, we get it. Then, I ordered the Futo Maki roll. What I received was literally half the size of what I was expecting and had ordered in the past, but at the same price. Then, since I was still (unexpectedly) hungry, I ordered a yellowtail roll. Again, half the size of what I was expecting, which is fine because I don't expect sushi to be gigantic anyway, but I'm pretty sure what I got wasn't even yellowtail. It was chopped, and whatever it was tasted strange, like they took the fatty parts of some other white fish, mixed it with scallion and passed it off as yellowtail. YUCK. The icing on top of the whole shitcake - my friend and I tried to order another round of free sake (which we were 100% entitled to as that is their policy) and were told, LOUDLY and RUDELY, by one of the waitresses that people were "waiting for our table" and that she had been expecting us to leave. When I tried to explain to her we had been trying to get someone's attention pretty much the entire time we were there, she proceeded to yell at us that she was "in the back" and didn't notice - and when I say yell, I mean she literally got IRATE with us. When she realized we weren't going to give up our table, she stormed off to get more sake, then came back and SLAMMED it on to the table. On my way out the door, I shouted "I'm going to Sapporo next time" loud enough for everyone to hear, including that c*nt that got loud with us. I had such an awful experience with the person (Cashier?) that picked up the phone that I felt compelled to leave them this review! Called them during lunch time to place order for 3 lunches. After I hung up, I realized the prices were way higher than what I expected, and called them back to double check, and make sure my order was off the lunch special, and not the regular prices, and this is where the Cashier got extremely rude with me. I asked him if my order was off the lunch special, and he said "no! you didn't say lunch special so its the regular menu!" So I said, "oh.. okay, can you please switch it to the lunch menu?" and I got this response "NO! Its too late! The order is already done!" I, calmly said "Sir, there is no need to raise your voice and yell at me.." and he said "I am not yelling!! It's very busy here! Cannot change!!" Then I said, "Okay, then what if I want to cancel?" Him: "You want cancel?? Then I will cancel the order!!" Me: "So, I cannot change the order, but I can cancel the order? Then I'll just cancel, and make another another under the Lunch Special price" Him: "No! If you cancel, then NO ORDER!! SO?? CANCEL OR NOT??" Me: "Can I please speak to your manager?" Him: "NO! No manager here!! You want the noodles or not???" Me: "Okay, I'll keep the order. 45 minutes right?" Him: "Yes. Bye!!" The noodles arrived in an hour and 15 minutes. If he had been nicer, I wouldn't even had been as upset and would leave the order as-is. Besides, shouldn't it be his job to make sure whether or not any orders placed during lunch time is for the lunch special pricing? Side note, they did not put in the free California roll as advertised on the menu for orders over $35 (which they used to do). Our order came to over $45. We used to love ordering from this restaurant because the prices were fair and the employees were generally friendly. From time to time, we would place big orders for the company. I love this place! Vincent and his staff are the sweetest and most accommodating! Came here first time in December 2012 with a group of fifteen 22 year olds for a birthday because a neighbor mentioned they take reservations and were good about groups which were my only requirements this night. To say we were loud is an understatement. We have been back with large groups at least 6 other times and they are always the nicest and most accommodating, greeting us by name, letting us do sake bombs, and take up half the restaurant on Saturday nights. Free sake with meals is the best deal in town and the food is actually very good and reasonably priced. Vegetable gyoza, spicy fried rice, and oishi roll are my go tos. A neighborhood favorite. I love how Vincent will come around and chill drinking sake with us as well haha what a great guy. Can't wait to go back for our next big party. This had been my neighborhood go-to spot for over three years, over which I have witnessed their steady decline into a restaurant no longer worth visiting. Their yellowtail roll used to be one of my favorites, and is now chopped red snapper passed off as yellowtail. Their spicy tuna roll is so full of tempura crunch that you can taste only that. Even if you ask for "no crunch," the fish is so finely chopped that it is just spicy mayo mush with very little fish. I have hope that they may return to their former quality, as they used to be the best sushi restaurant in Greenpoint and now seem to be trying to cut costs. My husband and I ordered take out on #seamless, when the food arrived, I started unpacking and in doing so, I noticed tiny cockroaches in my seaweed salad. We were completely grossed out and disturbed. We immediately called the restaurant, the abrupt lady answering the phones was so rude to us. We wanted a full refund on our meal and offered for them to come and pick up everything. All she would do is send us a new seaweed salad and said "if we have a problem call seamless because that's where we ordered". She didn't apologize, showed absolutely no concern even when I said I have photos. I was shocked that a business representative could treat a loyal customer this way - we would order from Sakura 6 at least 4 times a month. Thank god for seamless, I called to explain the situation - within 20mins I got a full refund of $44.70 (after they spoke to the Sakura6) and because seamless felt so bad for us they gave us an additional $10 off our next meal. #seamlessisthebest read more

I've never been let down here! I must confess that I really only come for the spicy beef udon/soba noodle soup on cold winter nights combined with hot sake, but I have on occasion had other things, all good. The service is pretty much the same every time, just right. The mood set with John Teshian zither and flute music coupled with the moving delicate laser light show on stone with a faint sound of babbling brook is unparalleled in the neighborhood, and all its own. Definitely the best sushi/Japanese in the Greenpoint area by far. Their delivery is prompt and friendly, as in takeout. But unlike most such restaurants, I actually enjoying eating IN there. Well done. An incredibly reliable Sushi spot that made me forget Wasabi ever existed. I've never had a bad meal here and their sake and beer selection is thorough. The staff is attentive without being annoying. The chefs are dedicated and intelligent. The music is wonderful and inspires deep contemplative discussion. My one suggestion would be to dampen the racket that starts to swell when more than four tables are active. It's nearly impossible to have dinner here when it's packed - which is often. The establishment might lose in daily sales numbers by taking out six or seven tables and installing booths or private booths on the right side - but I think they would gain in creating a much more enjoyable dining experience. When it's packed at night, everyone is screaming and it sounds and feels like a high school cafeteria. I suppose that's where the bottomless sake comes in. Though, i would not recommend the free sake - it's bound to give you heartburn as the quality seems very low. I'm always suspicious of sake that 'they' refuse to serve cold. read more

This place is great. It's not the best Japanese food I've ever had, but it is good, pretty affordable, and very convenient. For the record, as a strict vegetarian I've only had the veggie dishes, never any meat (including fish). According to many people I've gone there with who do eat meat, though, it's very good, and I can definitely attest to the quality of the vegetable dishes. The atmosphere is also really nice. I have always ordered from Sakura for lunch, and I would usually order their Lunch Bento Box special - Chicken Teriyaki. During most times, their chicken teriyaki is delicious! But there are also times when the chicken is very dry and the taste of soy sauce is overwhelming. Today I ordered Dunbori Chicken. It was gross. The taste is mostly that of soy sauce. It tasted the same as what I would usually get at those crappy chinese restaurant. Awful, awful place! I decided to order for pick-up despite all those bad reviews that came up recently. Oyakodon is a really simple dish that is hard to mess up, since it's basically some chicken with eggs over rice. I had it hundreds of times while living in Japan and even at the cheapest places it was quite good. What I got was far away from what I expected. Most of the chicken was so raw that I could not eat it and it smelled horribly fishy. It was just disgusting. Believe me, I'm not picky with food and this is the first review I write but the experience was just SO bad!! Got some Gyoza as well which were burned though okay. And it's not a legit Japanese place since it's run by Chinese people, at least the grumpy lady at the counter was. But then, that's the case for most of the cheaper Japanese restaurants. read more

This has easily become my favorite restaurant in Greenpoint. I come here entirely too often (at least once a week - for the past two years..) and I don't have a single complaint. The tofu teriyaki is super good, as is the tiffany roll (never had it, everyone I've ever taken here approves though). And it's really a great value for the quality and service.
