I'm so happy that this restaurant is just a 2 min walk from my apartment. The food here is amazing and the ambiance is nice and peaceful. Food and alcohol is fairly priced and food is flavorful/well seasoned which is hard to find in a Japanese restaurant. The service is quick and food didn't take a while to come out. We ordered shishito peppers, corn ribs, beef sukiyaki, pork belly wrapped enoki mushrooms, and Miyazaki a5 Wagyu hot stone grill. * Shishito peppers 5/5 My favorite out of everything we ordered. It's a MUST TRY! The sauce it's in has yuzu so it's nice, savory, a lil sweet, a lil sour, and a little citrusy - it's perfect for my tastebuds. Literally could not get over how good the sauce was. It also tasted good to dip the corn ribs in that sauce!! * Corn ribs 5/5 Grilled corn ribs with seasoning and cheese, super simple but super tasty. Can never go wrong with corn ribs! * Beef Sukiyaki 5/5 Nice and flavorful broth, the meat is tender, there's also a knot of clear noodles at the bottom of the bowl. * Pork Belly Wrapped enoki 5/5 GOOD. Who doesn't love pork belly AND mushrooms (only crazy people) ?! I'm going to give Tora some extra points because it's SO hard to find good asian food in this area of Brooklyn. Tora I think is a true jack of all trades, while many restaurants try to excel in one area I think Tora does amazing at multiple. It's good for sushi, ramen, noodles, etc. Just an overall really well-rounded japanese spot. I think their serving sizes are also very good. Though I'll say I don't think Tora particularly excels in one thing it's not going to be the best ramen or sushi you've had in your life but, for something that's close? Affordable? Has no line? It's been open for a few years, so clearly it has a good enough formula to keep the neighborhood happy. I have been here once before, but returned last week after dining several meals at Tomoni in Jackson Heights. Apparently, the owners are friends. Nonetheless, I needed to make the comparison. After my first few bites of their Tora Don and Chirashi Don, it was clear that this restaurant has the better quality seafood. Each slice of sashimi had vibrant colors, clean taste, and the proper texture. Tomoni is not bad, but fall slightly short of this caliber. With that said, there is an even farther gap between their rice quality. Though Tora is very good, Tomoni produces nearly perfect texture and acidity for my taste buds. Other than the best omakase restaurants in NYC, Tomoni shines as one of the best versions of sushi rice in the five boroughs. Service is good and space is cute. I booked a reservation for two at noon for the same night and it was really easy to do on the Resy app or by calling in when they were open. When we got there our table was ready and the waitress was quick to take our order. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time too. We really loved everything we ate and the drinks were great too. I got the sparkling basil lemonade and I was so glad that it wasn't overly sugary. It was perfect to pair with the food we were eating. I would highly recommend ordering the pasta, the Japanese tacos, and the tuna crispy rice! My friend brought my boyfriend and I here one weeknight, as we've all been trying to go out to eat in our neighborhoods more and we had such a great time. The restaurant is small yet very aesthetic. We were seated at a back table upon arrival and ordered our drinks. My friend got an absolutely delicious yuzu sake, and I got the Bushwick Bay and a Diet Coke. My drink was a lot fruitier than I had hoped but was still so so good, and his sake was probably some of the best sake I've had in a while. To start we shared Japanese tacos. I'm fairly critical of fusion based dishes, as I feel like oftentimes they're more hype than anything, but these were fantastically crunchy and savory. We also all shared the Tri Set, giving us all the opportunity to try 3-4 types of their sushi - all were great. I then had the Miyazaki A5 Hot Stone wagyu steak. I haven't cooked my own Wagyu in a while so I forgot how quickly the process is but it was delicious. Be careful though, the stone is HOT. This was soo good and very melt in your mouth. My friend had the Tonkotsu ramen which she enjoyed and left enough for a to-go container for herself. My partner had the Chashudon, which included super tender pork belly and left satisfied with his choice as well. He also had a beer with this. Had a lovely date night at Tora recently, which had been on our radar for a while. We were able to walk in at about 7pm, most of the tables were bust outside of 1-2. We took the meal slowly, ordering in multiple rounds, and were pleased to find that we weren't being rushed at all!! Some of our favorite dishes from the evening were the Mentaiko pasta which had great flavor and texture, along with the Kani Salad which was a good portion for the price. The skewers were perfectly cooked as well! Not sure we would repeat the surf and turf roll or crispy rice- would probably opt to try something different next time we come back! Lovedd the salmon zaab and the fly by day cocktail, would definitely come here again for those. Salmon zaab sauce has a noticeable but not overwhelming wasabi spice kick and complements the salmon very well. Fish itself was fresh and decently sized. Fly by day is basically a lychee martini, which I really enjoyed however the volume amount is so little, especially considering it comes with a giant ice cube. Tried some of my friends spicy miso ramen which was also quite good, satisfying comfort esp in the winter cold. Mentaiko pasta was very flavorful, a bit too strongly fishy forward for my preference but the noodles were a nice texture and appreciated how properly sauced they were. Bacon was also nicely crisped which was a nice complement. Corn ribs were pretty disappointing. I think in the description there was something about teriyaki flavor but it tasted literally of just Parmesan sprinkled on bland corn. Jasmine espresso martini had a really pleasant jasmine aroma as you held the glass to your mouth to take a sip but didn't get any jasmine flavor in the actual taste. It tasted like a regular espresso martini. The passionfruit cocktail was decently good, again very small serving with the giant ice cube. Even though I love passionfruit, I'd recommend the fly by day over this one. Our server was really sweet, friendly, and attentive. When my friend expressed concern about the spice level of the spicy miso because she can't handle really spicy, he assured her if it's too spicy for her she could get something else instead. After she got her ramen, he checked in on her to ask how she was doing with the spice level. Street parking was easy to find at least when went cuz it's not on the main street. Would come here again to try more menu items cuz there's a lot more things I am curious to try. read more

Have been here a handful of times now and think it's pretty solid for the area! Have never been for dinner so can only speak for the lunch vibe, but I have found the service to be great and the lighting is nice because there are floor to ceiling windows. The menu is pretty diverse with various appetizers, sushi, and also ramen/curry so your standard izakaya fare. One of my favorite dishes here has been the chirashi. The fish was very fresh and it's pretty affordable. I've only ever been here in groups of two and I probably would recommend it for smaller groups because the space itself is small and most of the tables are two-seaters if I recall correctly. read more

Tora is a cute place for japanese food in bushwick! My friends and I enjoyed the food and the portions are quite generous considering the price. You honestly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The only reason I docked a star was because its really hard to hear each other talk, the music was loud and the sound doesn't travel well with all the concrete in the restaurant. You basically have to shout to hear each other. I'd recommend consulting a sound engineer or looking into better sound proofing materials and/or lowering the music. read more

We went to Tora on 12/30 and had the most beautiful time. We were a group of 7 and we ordered a ton of dishes. Everyone had the best time and it was the best dinner out before the end of the year! My boyfriend and I had to try as much as we could so we came hungry and shared 2 chicken thigh yakitori, the sake don, the truffle wagyu ramen, the unagi roll, and we had some takoyaki! Other people at the table also ordered the truffle wagyu ramen and the spicy hotate roll. Some of our friends ordered cocktails and loved them too. Everyone couldn't stop talking about the food, the service was perfect, perfect, perfect too! Having traveled to Japan previously in my life, this is the closest I've had to ramen of that perfection and everything else was just as delicious. We can't wait to go back next time we are in NYC. Okay came here around when they were still very new and I want to say I was expecting a larger space, not sure why - but yeah, this place is pretty small. Travel lightly if you come. Service was good, but food wise not so memorable. A got the sashimi salad, but can't remember what A said about it. I remember something was off. Maybe the dressing? Gyoza wasn't good from what I recall. The sake Don didn't satiate my craving. They were quick to get things off the table : used napkins , unneeded plates , came around constantly to top off water and made sure nothing was out of place .The dinner is romantically lit but I saw many friends sitting and having a great time . It's very a modern classy feel. The katsu curry was breaded thin chicken was tender and juicy and curry was well seasoned. The grilled sticks were cooked perfectly to my taste gizzards chewy mmm squid tender and enoki with pork belly rendered to perfection. What stole the show for me was the mentiko pasta it has the umami of the cod roe blended seamlessly with the mayo and cream on perfectly cooked udon noodles with the accent of crispy bacon for texture and to give your taste buds a break from the richness of the noodles . I started with the appetizers, and the tuna crispy rice was a standout--perfectly crispy and topped with fresh jalapeños. This place only has good reviews because there are not many good Japanese options in this neighborhood. I'm Japanese, grew up eating/cooking Japanese food with my family, and spent part of my upbringing in Tokyo so I feel confident in these perspectives. I asked a question about whether the sukiyaki came with rice because I was excited to see it on an izakaya menu. The waiter gave me a condescending tone in explaining that the dish isn't served with rice as it's a 'noodle soup' type dish. Sukiyaki is a hot pot-type dish, I don't understand why he had to give me an attitude on the question and act like it's the same type of thing as ramen. I ended up still getting it and the broth tasted bottled and it did come served like a noodle soup. The sushi was just OK - the menu kind of feels all over the place with izakaya foods, pasta, yakitori, sushi/sashimi. I respect and love fusion but maybe a focus would be a little helpful. Come here if you're down to drink beer & eat yakitori (grilled meats) for happy hour, but don't come if you want dishes done well. read more

The marinate was just right with a bit of sweetness and great with the bowl of rice. Came on a weekend around the time it opens so was seated right away and there was no one besides my friend and I. Staff was very attentive and gave us time to look over the menu and kept coming by to check if things were ok. Always came to refill our water a couple of times. Lots of seating and very spacious. Bushwick definitely needs more Japanese food options, and this place was a good find. With a great variety of options it was a bit of a challenge to pick my order, multiple options sounded great. I went with the salmon don, my friend the pork katsu curry, and we snagged melon high balls and karaage chicken off the happy hour menu which runs until 7pm. Overall the food was great at satisfying, definitely hit the spot. My only complain is that the portions are a bit small for the price, in my opinion. While I was content, I left here hungry still a bit hungry and considered ordering more. Overall I would give this spot an 8/10 and definitely with a go. One of my new favorite spots! I've been telling everyone that Bushwick needs an izakaya so I'm glad that Tora opened. Such a great addition to the neighborhood. My family and I tried a bunch of things off the menu: takowasa, yakitori, sashimi, wagyu etc. Dishes were fresh, flavorful, and presented nicely. A bit pricier than regular izakaya fare but it's a more upscale place so that was expected. Also! They have one of the best crispy rices I've had.
