However they made sure we had seats and glasses of water right outside their front door while we waited for a spot, very kind of them. Once we eventually got in and snagged a table, we saw that there's a team of 2-3 professional sushi chefs behind a counter in the middle of the dining area, with a display of sashimi and other goodies behind the counter. A good sign for sure. They have a pretty extensive menu (I'd like to come back and try a few more things at some point, like their pineapple fried rice), but we came specifically for the sushi and ordered accordingly. Had some Edamame and Tempura Shrimp to start, and then ordered the "Lover's Plate" (or something along those lines) for two, to share among the 3 of us. Menu said it came with a good sampling of different kinds of sushi and sashimi, which is exactly what we were hoping for. And holy crow, do they not skimp on the portions. The Lover's Plate is like $50, but it's well worth it. We were utterly stuffed and could barely finish the food - would have brought home more if we didn't know that sashimi rarely stays as good after a day or so in the fridge, so we crammed down as much as we could while sitting there. The bottom line about the sushi and sashimi is that they were good - maybe not spectacular, but again quite good overall. Clearly they know what they're doing, behind the counter. Meanwhile their staff came over multiple times to check on us, see if we liked the food or wanted anything else - they seemed genuinely keen on making sure we were having a good time, despite having a packed restaurant of other customers to handle as well. The bill wasn't cheap, but it wasn't crazy expensive either - just the right amount, given the quality of the food. Would happily come again and try out other items from their sizable menu.

California rolls are California rolls. lol The tuna roll was a weird color. Maybe it was fatty tuna? I'm not sure. Usually when I order a Tuna roll the tuna is a nice bright, dark color. This tuna roll was very dull and grayish. I tried it and it tasted OK. But I just felt like it was sketchy so I wound up throwing it away. I think I would definitely come back and dine in. We were not disappointed!! This restaurant on the Upper East Side looks unassuming but the quality, service and prices were all excellent. We started with pan fried gyoza and fried shumai. Not every restaurant offers fried shumai and I prefer it to steamed shumai, which sometimes has a slimy texture on the outside. Both appetizers were some of the best I've ever had, crispy, fresh and delicious. I ordered the lunchbox special with beef teriyaki. I couldn't believe the portion for the price. A lot of places make you choose soup or salad. This came with both, along with a California roll, white rice, some veggies, steamed shumai and the protein -- a choice of teriyaki chicken, beef or salmon. You could also order a sushi or sashimi lunch box for a bit more. The ginger dressing tasted fresh and delicious, with just a little spice. My husband ordered California rolls and spicy tuna rolls, also a lunch special. He said it was the best spicy tuna he's ever had! Akura is a bit off the beaten path for places we normally visit in Manhattan but we may just have to come back! Downside? No alcohol but you could bring your own with no corkage fee if you wanted. They served water, soda and even hot tea in stainless steel tumblers. I liked them for cold beverages but it was a bit odd for green tea. Not a dealbreaker at all - but interesting enough that I noticed! I kinda want the same glasses for my house as they kept drinks nice and cold!
